A Flower That Blooms Only For One Night

My wife has these two very large plants the bloom at night, for only one night. We put the plants on the deck in the back yard for the summer and they really do well out there. For the past few years I have been using my iPhone and iPad to take a time lapse video of the bloom. I mount my iDevices on a tripod and set up some LED lights so I can capture the action. This year, I have been using the iOS camera app, to make the time lapse video. In the past, I used a different app, Procam.

I’d thought I’d share the videos with you. These are not the best videos I made for this flower but the ones I have managed to get this year. The first bloom of the year had 30 flowers across two plants. But a rainstorm forced me to stop filming. I actually mount an umbrella over the iPhone and iPad, but my LED lights weren’t covered and I didn’t want to ruin them.

I still don’t know what type of plants these are. They could be Saussurea Obvallata, also known as Brahma Kamal. It also could be Epiphyllum Oxypetalum or Dutchman’s-Pipe Cactus. I originally thought maybe Brahma Kamal, but I and now thinking Epiphyllum Oxypetalum.
