Update Sept 22 2103

This guide is for iOS 6. I have a new guide for iOS 7. See How to Setup Straight Talk Wireless Data and MMS for your iPhone running iOS 7. Both guides should work for iOS 7, but try the new one, I have tried to improve the process and well as update the screen shots for iOS 7.

UPDATE: NOV 19 2013

Many readers are reporting problems that they are having trouble sending or receiving MMS over the last few days. If you are having a problem  please leave a comment here: I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4

This guide describes how to set up Straight Talk  Access Point Name or APN for Data, Internet, MMS, or picture messaging for your iPhone. I documented the steps I used to set up my iPhone 5 with Straight Talk Data and MMS.  This guide should help you with any iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, or iPhone 5 running iOS 6. The guide shows step by step how to setup the Access Point Name  or APN values needed to data and MMS picture messaging working.

If you have been using Straight Talk with your iPhone and your data or MMS has suddenly stopped working, try this post.

If you are using an Android phone or smartphone other than an iPhone, this guide is not for you. Please try my generic smartphone guide.

If you are looking to switch your iPhone to Straight Talk, see the article I wrote about my experience.

Thanks for posting this how to! Super helpful. I got my data working on my iPhone 4 running on iOS 6.1 and mms works with iMessage but I can’t send to non iPhones.
I tried the sim swap but the cellular data won’t show up even when restarting my phone. I got my iPhone through AT&T. Any ideas? Thanks!

  2. Bethany says:

I would first like to say THANK THE LORD FOR THIS!! I was so lost when I was setting up my iPhone for straight talk until I found this. I know you said that you would have to do the two different steps in order to have MMS messaging. I just did the first step and both my data and MMS both work. There was no need for the Sim Swap. I was so happy when I found out I did not have to do the swap.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Bethany,
Is you are running ios 7, you may not need to sim swap to get mms. Of you are running ios 6 make sure you are sending pictures with mms and not iMessage. iMessage only works to other iPhones.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Ethan says:

        Hey Bob,

I rang through everything you said to, but at the end I still was not able to send Picture messages to anyone. I own an iPhone 3GS running on the iOS 6.0.3, any ideas?

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Ethan,
It’s not clear to me which steps you tried. Did you look up your APN on the Straight Talk web site using the link it the guide? Did you SIM swap? can you receive MMS?
          Regards
          Bob

  3. Kevin says:

Yes I entered the message size but there was no ua prof URL on the straight talk data site and on your site it did not give anything for that. What do I need to enter?

  4. Adam says:

I went and bought a new T-Mobile SIM card to preform the sim swap on my 3gs. After removing my straight talk APN settings swapping cards and restarting many times, my phone will not show a Cellular Data Network option. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  5. Kevin says:

No, yesterday when I was trying to send mms and it didn’t work I ask my son to send me a picture. He sent two and I never got them, but this morning at 9:00 am they came through. So I tried to send that picture back to him and it would not send.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Kevin,
You can try a hard reset. Press and Hold the home and lock buttons until the phone restarts. Test sending MMS.
If that doesn’t work. Try resetting your network settings. (settings general reset). Then re set up the APN. Are you entering the message size and UA Prof URL as well?
      Regards
      Bob

  6. Rafa says:

I tried getting my mms working and had no luck I am using the “tfdata” and could only get the data to work. My mms send but the person that I send them too does not get them. I had some friends send me some and had no luck in receiving them either. Can someone please help me ??

  7. Melissa says:

My data or mms isn’t working for my iPhone 5. How do I fix it?

  8. Kevin says:

Tried it 5 times did airplane mode, still can’t receive or send mms. When I’m entering my apn setting. in the tethering apn box it says phone does that have to be changed? Thanks.

    • Bob Thompson says:

It’s been a long time since I did this on ios 6. I don’t remember seeing the tethering APN setting being present when the St att sim is back in the phone. Are you trying to enter the settings while the tmobile sim is still in the phone?

  9. Kevin says:

Yes I got the cellular data network to show up. I’m useing tfdata apn, that’s the one I’ve been useing since the last time this happen about a year ago.

  10. Kevin says:

I have a 3GS with straight talk. I just updated my iPhone to the 6.1.6 and now my mms is not working. I’m useing the apn setting tfdata like I was useing before. My data works find. I tried the SIM card swap but did not work .

  11. Alicia DeSart says:

    Hi Bob,
I did all the steps for the first APN settings, didn’t work, so I removed the profile to install the next one you provided. For some reason, the wifi wasn’t on and the internet was working again! Now is this suppose to happen? Currently, it doesn’t have a profile, yet the internet and other media work! So is there anything wrong to be suspected in the future? Thanks!

  12. clifford doles says:

i have an iphone 3gs with straight talk and ive tryed the sim card swap multiple times and have had no luck anyway you can help?

  13. David says:

    Bob,
As per so many comments before me, this site is a lifesaver!
I just signed up to StraightTalk on earlier this month and all their online & live chat help did nothing to fix my no data & no MMS issues. The parting comment from my last live-chat session was “wait 24 hours then get back to us.” What a joke!

My 4S needed the – “unlockit” manual APN set-up, and bang, data up & running!
By following all of your directions I got the MMS back shortly thereafter, AND got my google voice # usable as well!

Thank You for all your fantastic efforts here; Clear, Concise, Usable and…Patient direction for those of us that haven’t been down this particular road before!

  14. Gil says:

I got the data and SMS working but not MMS – only if I put the straight talk profile.
    I have iphone4 with iOS 6
When I put the T-Mobile SIM in it gets the APN of T-Mobile, I then delete them and put the info you mentioned here but it doesn’t work and I don’t get any data then

    • Bob Thompson says:

Its sounds like you do not understand the instructions. You need to remove the T-Mobile SIM and put the ATT one back in before you enter the values. Read the steps carefully.

      • Gil says:

        Bob,
I repeated the process. Not sure what I did, but it seems to do the trick, and I can get MMS. SO thank you thank you thank you so much !!!
The only thing which I was wondering it looks like the data (without WiFI) works kinda slow, did you notice that as well?

  15. Jorgie says:

im using IOS 7 on my iphone 4— im not understanding what to do? I reset my network settings and now my internet wont work ??? Whats going on?

  16. Jorgie says:

I have an iphone 4 I don’t know whats wrong, my wife has a iphone 4 and hers works perfectly fine please help me.

  17. Jorgie says:

I cant receive MMS and my data seems slow, please help me.

  18. Gil says:

    Hi,
I have iPhone4 iOS6 I went through the steps the problem is when I put the T-mobile SIM in it gets the APN info of T-Mobile, I’ve changed it and took the sim out, but then when I’m back with the straighttalk sim it won’t let me check the APN and say the data is not working. Any suggestions?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Gil,
It doesn’t sound like you are following the directions correctly.

      Put the tmobile sim in
      Go to cellular data network
      Don’t change any settings
      Remove the tmobile sim
      Insert the att sim
Go back into cellular data network quickly before it disspears
Wait until it recognizes the att sim
      Enter your settings
      Save them
You can’t go back and check them once you save them

      Regards
      Bob

  19. Patricia Hardemon says:

I have gone through all the procedures . I don’t have internet access. Nor mms picture text.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi,
So you have tried installing all three APN profiles and doing the sim swap without results? You did not mention which iphone you have and whether you are using the straight talk att network compatible SIM or the tmobile network compatible SIM. Which iphone model do you have? The model number is on the back of the phone.

      Regards,
      Bob

  32. John says:

    Hi,
I have a locked att iphone4 (ios6). I purchased a straight talk activation kit. I now have a new telephone number that works with the straighttalk service. My SMS, iMessaging, and data are all working. However the MMS is not. I’ve tried countless times to do Method 2 and always get stuck on step 9. I don’t see the CELLULAR DATA NETWORK. is this because my phone is still locked. I came across this Cherry Unlock program: http://e-iphoneunlock.com/unlock-iphone/
If I were to unlock my phone using this program would it allow me to see CELLULAR DATA NETWORK? and would that or could that disrupt my straight talk, iMessage, data service that I currently have?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi John,
I can’t say for certain that unlocking your phone will help. All my iPhones are unlocked. I get many reports of not seeing Cellular Data Network from both readers using locked phone and unlocked phones. Sometimes readers report seeing it after unlocking the phone.

When you are doing step 9, you do have a T-Mobile sim in the phone, right?
I have some tips here Net10 Data, Internet and MMS APN Frequently Asked Questions

I am not familiar with any of the third party unlocking services. I don’t think it would break anything. I unlocked one iPhone 4s through AT&T when I was an AT&T customer. If the contract on your iPhone 4 was completed, ask AT&T to unlock it for free. HAving the phone offically carrier unlocked is a good thing.

Read through the FAQ above, let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

      Regards
      Bob

      • John says:

Yes, I am using the tmobile sim card when doing step 9. I have tried the steps mentioned in the FAQS link you sent me. Still not working. The next step according to the link you sent me is to unlock. I have just submitted a request to at&t and will write back with my results once I get my iPhone unlocked. Thanks for the speedy response.

  33. Beverly Williams says:

I have an iphone 5. Yesterday I switched from AT&T to straight talk and could not receive messages from any of my friends who had iphones. I tried your guide from step 1 and now I’m getting messages both with and without imessage turned on. As soon as I completed the guide, I got a new voicemail notification, new email notification, and 10 new text messages that were actually sent last night when I first switched from AT&T. I do appreciate your help!

  34. John says:

I bought an iPhone 4 it is not updated to iOS 7. And I can not send or get picture message straight talk said its not there net work it’s my phone

  35. Stephanie wood says:

Does this work for the iOS 7? I went from having a t-mobile sim to an AT&T one and haven’t been able to send or receive pictures. I followed all the steps u had for the sim swap but couldn’t get it to work.

  36. John Yule says:

Thanks to you Bob I finally got it all working. We exchanged messages on Jan 17, just 2 days after I had moved my newly unlocked 3GS (iOS 6) to STW from ATT. After I had worked through methods 1 and 2 (SIM Swap), I was able to get data and some MMS functions (receive but not send group MMS and any pictures), but yesterday I went after it again and this time I won. In the meantime iMessages bailed me out at least with my iPhone friends and family. I don’t know what made the difference but I do know what I did yesterday: 1) removed the four provisioning profiles that we discussed earlier and 2) ran both method 1 and 2 again. Don’t know if I might have had a bad first run or if ST has changed something or if the bogus provisioning profiles sabotaged me or what, but I’m very pleased to have everything back in good working order again. I did notice one strange thing that may provide a clue; that is that when I turned iMessages on again after finishing method 2 this time, I was required to enter my Apple PW and it did not engage until several hours later—meanwhile displaying the message “awaiting activation”.

Thanks again, so much, for helping me through this difficult situation. You are the glue that makes STW work. They owe you big time!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi john,
Nice to hear from you. Thank you for taking the time to come back and let me know you got your phone working. It’s great, that you got it working. Sometimes it just takes a few tries to get it working. Sometimes it’s the phone, sometimes it’s straight talk, and sometimes people Mae small mistakes entering the values.

Whatever the case, it’s working now. I am glad the guide helped.

      Regards
      Bob

And all is well with iMessage – time cures all woes.

  37. Frasel Edwards says:

Your guide worked excellently for my iphone 4 except for the mms. I could not get it to work. I was also one that did could not get the cellular data network to show up in my settings. Cellular was not even under the “General” tab, It was a tab of its own. After trying the sim swap several times with no success, I restarted my phone and went to look at my carrier settings, and a pop-up that I kept ignoring to update my carrier settings came up again. I clicked ok, it changed my carrier from AT&T to TFW and I was able to send mms, so everything is now working on my locked AT&T phone4! Thank you so much!

  39. Jean says:

Actually i was about to try the MMS steps for iOS 7 since it updated this morning, but just in case i checked to see if it still wasn’t working & apparently the update straightened the rest out :) Thanks so much for the help!
    Jean

  40. Jean says:

I went through the set up with the data & was finally successful after trying the unlockit.co.nz option. I then tried the set up for the MMS but when I get to the part about having the other sim card in to see the Cellular Data Network it does show with either card. I’ve tried all the steps multiple times but it never showed. What can I do to fix this?
    Thank you,
    Jean

  41. Aurora Villalobos says:

I have an iPhone 4 and bought the straight talk kit and everything works besides the internet it’ll only work with wifi on and I’ve called the straight talk customer service all they tell me to do is to download the app so the internet can work I’ve tried doing that and it doesn’t let me do anything. Is there another way?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Aurora
When you turn off Wi-Fi and try to load a web page, what do you see in your status bar? Does it same HOME? Do you see a 3G or E?
How many bars do you have? Are you using the Straight AT&T or Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM.

      Try this
Go to Setting->General-Reset and Tap Reset All Settings.
Follow the guide again and try all three APN profiles
      Regards
      Bob

Please help me! I’m at the end of my rope if patience! I have been scrolling through this site to find the steps to update my data and mms for my iPhone 3GS currently ported over from AT&T. The port over was successful but the data and mms eludes me. Please in 1 response send me the step necessary to conclude this nightmare of a decision to churn my cell phone from AT&T from whom I was satisfied with except for the bill. 45. Brooke says:

    Hi Bob,
Your guide is incredibly helpful and detailed…The only thing I would ask is to have the steps on one window, I found it very difficult to follow the steps when I had to click through next pages and avoid all the comments…
    Thanks again :)

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Brooke,
The majority of readers go through my guides on a mobile phone. The guide is just too long for that. I had another reader tell me that some of the pages are too long yesterday. Go Figure :-)
      Regards
      Bob

    • Alton James says:

Bob, I just want to say thanks. I got Smart Talk to save on my monthly costs, but their phone tech support told me they could not offer support for iphones. I got no advice from the apple forms. I found your web site and walked through the steps by puttng in my old SIM card to get the cellular settings window to view. I put in the new codes, and….BAM!! Now I can send pics in my text messages. You are the best!! Thank you very much!! A James Miami FL

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Alton,
thanks for taking the time to comment. I am so glad to hear the guide helped you. It’s kind of a pian to have to do all this, but once you get it running it’s really nice to save $40-$50 a month!
        Regards
        Bob

  46. John Yule says:

I also meant to add to comments just sent that I recently updated my iOs 4.3.3 to 6.1.3 successfully.

  47. John Yule says:

I have completed method 1 successfully—tfdata is the profile that works for me. However, I can’t exchange pictures with my non-iOs friends and family, so I started into method 2 to try to fix that. I stopped at #5 when I realized my screen did not quite match your screenshots. When I tap more details in #3, I do get to view the APN name under advanced settings and I can remove it similarly, but my screen just calls it profile not profile installed. This doesn’t seem like a big problem because, again, I am allowed to remove the tfdata profile and move on, but I also noticed that I have four other Provisioning Profiles, all of which expired in 7-8/2011. Would you recommend that I remove these before I proceed because they might be unnecessary and an interference or had I better leave well enough alone? I am new to Straighttalk (2 days ago) after AT&T sent unlock code to Apple which I received on my no-contract 3GS iPhone when I backed up and restored from iTunes before activating my new ST ATT SIM online with ST. Thanks.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi John,
I don’t know why your screen is different than mine. Maybe it was different on the 3GS? It really doesn’t matter. That button is just go back.
I don’t know if you had some app or other reason for the provisioning profiles.

I would proceed with the SIM swap and see if you can get your phone to work. Afterwards, you can delete the profiles. If you try the SIM swap a few times and it doesn’t work. Delete those profiles and try again (shouldn’t be the cause of the problem). If you get the Swap to work, remove those profiles, and make sure data and MMS still work.If not, (which is unlikely), then just SIM swap again.

Come back if you need help. Leave a comment to let us know how it goes. Awesome job getting the 3GS to Straight Talk. You will save a boat load of money using your already paid for phone!

Hello bob, thank you for this website it made my iPhone 3 get Internet, I had to do the APN unlockit thing, but my picture messaging will still not work because my iPhone is locked. AT&T will not unlock because there was money owed on the bill that the phone was used on. Do you know if there is anything like this I can follow to be able to send and receive picture messaging? My IPhone is locked but I can do everything except send/receive picture messaging. I have straight talk with it, thank you hope you can help me out! Please! Thanks, Kate

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Kate,
Take a look at the second part of the guide. Read about the SIM swap. This method might work your phone. Youll need to spend a couple of dollars for a t-mobile SIM to try. what version of iOS are you using?
          Regards
          Bob

    • Deborah says:

I had to try it 3 times to get it to work…so with there being 3 different APNs have to try until you connect with the right one. Each time I had to delete the Profile then back to the website to install.

Thank you so much for this guide. My girlfriend got an iPhone 3GS 16gb white model, old I know but way better than what she had, running iOS 6.1.3. I did some research and actually found this before activating it so was prepared to MAKE it work for her. Sure enough when the service activated the MMS and Data didn’t work. I went through the guide step by step. The first URL I tried didn’t work but the second one which I think was http://iapnupdatetfdata.com fixed both the MMS and the Data and also iMessage. Thanks again.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Steven,
This is great news. I think it rocks that your girlfriend is using a 3GS. The phone works, it was THE phone to have several years ago and now she has one. Way better that some cheap feature phone. She can start to keep her eye out for a cheap iPhone 4 in the future and update if she finds a good deal.

  60. ML says:

Tried everything for iPhone 3GS running ios 6.1.3. The tfdata APN allows me to send mms messages, but i can not receive any. About to give up. My son can get mms with same iphone 3GS through t-mobile, so it must be a Straight Talk system or iphone setting limitation. Used both methods to set-up APN with an unlocked iphone and then jailbroke my phone so I would not need to swap sims. iMessage works fine for mms. Tried .31, .32, .33, .34 and .35 MMS Proxy Settings. Mixed and matched different setting from att, tf, and tracfone APNs. After three days of trying and searching web, out of options to test.

I have tried everything so that I can send and receive MMS (multi-media message, AKA pictures and videos) but cannot send or receive either one. I have a Iphone 3gs, I got my internet to work but my picture message still isn’t working. I even tried the sim swap and still nothing.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Madason,
What issue did you have when you SIM swapped? Were you able to get to the Cellular Data Network settings and enter the values or you just didn’t never saw that option?
      Regards
      Bob

I have successfully got my data to work but not my MMS. Can you help me please?

  65. scott says:

Hello and thanks for you help so far, one problem though that seems curious, I couldn’t find an exact fit in the faq’s: I have iPhone 3gs that used to be on ATT network. They graciously unlocked for me and I followed your guide precisely, I’m running iOS 6.1.3. The only apn codes that would work (after trying all) were the tracfone ones. After getting data to work I tried ‘method 2′ using a tMobile sim and was able to input all the info into the fields as shown below. I still have data but no MMS, everything else is working fine. Any suggestions? Tried a few times and deleted profiles before each attempt, also went through and deleted failed MMS tests, I read elsewhere that may help. Thanks for any help…if there is no fix then I can live with that, just curious.

    (14. If your data APN Name from Step 3 was wap.tracfone. Enter the values below. (these are the values that worked for other readers)

    APN: wap.tracfone
    APN: wap.tracfone
    MMSC: http://mms.tracfone.com
    MMS proxy: 216.155.165.40:8080

  67. Olivia rolph says:

So before I can start this process I have to buy a SIM card? Where do you buy those?

  68. RJ says:

Where can I get the sim card to do the sim swap configuration to get picture mail to work on my AT&T iPhone 4 w/ ST SIM. Does the sim need to be active? What kind of sim do I need for the configuration? I already installed the profile to get cellular data and text messaging working. Now I just need to get the pic mail to work. Thanks in advance

  69. Estella says:

I have no problem, I just can’t set my APN because my wi-Fi is grayed out and want turn on.

  70. Kylie says:

I recently switched to straight talk bringing my own ATT iphone 3Gs. I have data working by using the unlockit.co.nz site but when I try method 2 by putting the TMobile sim card in (so I can get picture messaging working)the option for cellular data still does not show up. I have tried taking it in and out several times and turning it on and off several times.

  71. Steve says:

So I just switched to StraightTalk with my old iPhone 3G… got phone and basic texting working, but no pictures with texts. I installed the APN via wifi onto my phone per StraightTalk’s instructions. Will picture messaging work on my version of the iPhone? Apologies if you’ve already answered this one… thanks!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Steve,
It’s possible to get MMS working on a 3G, I have not done it. The APN profile you installed only works for data, not MMS. Read the second half of my guide about the SIM swap. It may be possible to swap on the 3G if it is unlocked. I have a 3G lying around here that was locked and I was unable to SIM swap I think because the phone is locked.

If you are using the ST T-Mobile SIM? or the ATT SIM?
      Regards
      Bob

  72. Jason says:

I am trying to setup an iphone 4 running ios 7.0.4.

When I put the Tmobile card in, I do not get the option for Cellular Settings?

I used this exact method already on my phone 4 running ios 6 and it worked perfectly, so I get the process…but for some reason, I cannot get the option to show me Cellular Settings with ios 7

  73. Nikki says:

I tried all three apn settings and none of them are wirking

  74. Matthew says:

I got straight talk for my AT&T iPhone 4 and I put the SIM card from straight talk and I rebooted it and it shows up in my status bar that I have no service but I have wifi. I am not sure what to do but I had assumed that it would connect where I could make calls and text.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Matthew,
You need to activate the SIM by phone or online at the Straight Talk web site. Do you do that? Are you using the Straight Talk ATT or Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Matthew says:

Did active it and it is an AT&T SIM card but it started to work after a while. And then I followed you guild for my apn. Thank you Bob!

  76. Angela says:

I have an unlocked iphone 3gs. Have it through straight talk. I tried all the profiles on this blog and only the tfdata one works. I was able to send pictures. Now I can’t send pictures except to iphone users and only iphone users can send pictures to me. I am upgraded to 6.1.3 ios. HELP!! I want to be able to send pictures to everyone, not just iphone users!!!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Angela,
I don’t know who originally set up your phone or how they did it, but the APN profiles from Straight Talk only set up data not MMS. You will need to follow the second half of the guide and do the SIM swap to enter the Cellular Data Network settings.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Angela says:

I did the sim swap with a tmobile sim card and did the apn settings. I was then able to send pictures but couldn’t receive. now all of a sudden i can only send/receive to iphone users. if I use an at&t sim card, could I change the apn settings then?? or can i only use a tmobile card?

        • Angela says:

NM…an AT&T sim card won’t work. Guess I’ll have to either go to the Apple store or find a TMobile sim card to use to check the apn settings

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Angela,
Yes. You need a tmobile network SIM card. You can buy one on ebay or Amazon for a few dollars. I have never heard someone say they got help in the apple store with this.

            Regards
            Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Roseanne,
If you read this guide, the entire guide, the page you left the comment on, it shows you how to set up your mms. Did you read the entire guide? You need to get a tmobile sim and follow the step by step instructions. Take a look at the guide. It should be very clear what you need to do.
Let me know if you have ant questions after you have tried the guide.

      Regards
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi ,
Ok so I see you did the sim swap. You need follow the instructions carefully. Did you enter the cellular data networks after you put your att sim back in the phone.

You may need to try the sim swap several times before getting it to work. You can try turning airplane mode on for a minute after, you save the settings. The turn it off. Some people say it helped. Also did you remove the APN profile before doing the sim swap?

  83. Steve says:

Your guide worked great for my 4s to access the picture in mms, but when I used the Tmobile sim in a converter case for my fiance it will not work . My question is do I need a separate Tmobile card without the micro to 3G size converter case or do I need a separate sim for each of the other 2 phones I am trying to set up ? They are both 3GS . Thank you

  84. Brittany Berge says:

I’ve tried following your tutorial several times and can’t seem to make it happen. I have the Data no problem, but can’t get the MMS working. I have an iPhone 3gs running iOS 6.1.3. Everything goes fine until I try to find the ‘Cellular Data Network’. It just refuses to show up! I’ve tried closing all the apps, restarting with and without the Tmobile sim in and no such luck. What am I doing wrong?

  85. Betty says:

    Hi Bob,

I followed your instructions exactly as outlined in this tutorial and while data works fine and I can send MMS messages, I cannot receive them. I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.1.3. I recently purchased a new(er) Straight Talk sim. I mention this because my friend’s Straight Talk sim is more than a year old and both data and MMS stopped working on his phone (his phone specs are exactly the same as mine) until I changed his APN settings using the sim swap trick to reflect the tfdata APN update. Data and MMS once again work on his phone. Any suggestions as to what else I might try to get MMS messages on my phone?

    Many thanks!

    Betty

THIS PLUS THE AT&T DOWNLOAD WORKED FOR MY IPONE 3GS.

    • Beth Moyer says:

      Thanks Bob Bill!!

Bob – thank you for the well-written post…extremely easy to follow!

Bill – thank you for posting your updated settings!!

I have a 3GS and a 3G I transferred from ATT Service to Straight Talk, and your settings worked for me.

I believe Bill mentioned this before as well, but for everyone else out there with an older iPhone, make sure you have the latest OS installed for that model of iPhone, and when you insert the T-Mobile SIM, make sure that you Reset Settings in Settings=>General=>Cellular=>Cellular Data Network. Then put in your ATT SIM and enter the settings that Bill has recommended….I also added the 1048576 Max Message size settings…probably was implied when Bill posted:)
Thanks to both of you again.

I have a iPhone3g running 4.2.1. I am on straighttalk and have been using the unlockit to be able to access data while away from my home wireless network. It stopped working a few weeks ago. I’ve tried all the profile settings suggested and still have not been able to regain access to data when wireless is not available. Is there any solution?? Help is much appreciated!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Kat,
Your profile will likely be the tfdata one.
      Try this
      1. Press and hold both the lock and home buttons util the phone re starts
      2. go to Settings->General->Reset. Reset your network settings
      3. test data
      4. if it doesn’t work. Follow the guide. Try the tfdata profile first.

Let me know how it goes.

I have an unlocked iPhone 3gs running ios 6 on straight talk network. It was working perfectly using all of the instructions above to set up data and mms until the last week. I lost the data usage (ability to use safari). When I reset the data today using the tfdata profile, the data worked. Then I reinstalled mms ability using the SIM swap. The mms data then worked again but the data no longer worked. Any ideas? Thank you!

  101. iphone3gs straighttalk says:

    Hello To All,
1st and foremost thanks to all who help on here and for helping me in the past. I have a I phone 3gs with straight talk and as with many people the picture messaging stopped working when straight talk did update in (around) November 2013. My 3GS is on Straight talk AT & T network and it is not jail broken. I believe it is unlocked but not positive about that. So I have read many forums, topics, and Q & Answers about this subject. In the end it seems there is not a solution to fix/get the picture messaging to work on the IPhone 3gs. It seems the sim swap with T-Mobile would have worked before the update in November. So please help if you can as I am unwilling to give up that easy and not have picture messaging on my old phone. I know there has to be someone out there online somewhere who has the same problem. Please chime in if you can help me and others with this problem. It will be much appreciated as I know someone has to find/know a solution for such a simple problem of not being able to send picture messaging with the older I phone 3gs. Note I am also running the older IOS 5.1.1 (9b206). Thanks for your help in advance I am sure someone will chime in that knows and can help with this problem thanks.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi,
In November 2013 ST changed the APN that many customers were using to tfdata. Also in November, many ST customers started reporting issues with MMS, specifically receiving mms. The solution to the first problem is to install the correct APN profile for data, or SIM swap for data and MMS. You won’t know if you have the second problem until you try the first.

You face two issues with the sim swap, you don’t know if your phone is locked and you are running iOS 5.x. I have no direct experience with either sim swapping on 5.x or a locked phone. Readers have reported both success and problems with locked phones. You can always ask att to unlock your phone. Worst case, they say No. You also have the option to update to ios 6.

I am wondering how you got mms working in the past through, did you sim swap?

      Regards
      Bob

  103. Clare L says:

Thank you for a wonderful, well done website. I have an unlocked from the Apple store iphone 4s, not yet upgraded to ios 7. I used to have the unlockit.co.nz old apn for Straight Talk and it used to use att.mvno, but when Straight Talk recently updated, it wasn’t working. The new unlockit.co.nz for Straight Talk uses tfdata. So I have been using that for data. However, when I used the tmobile card for the swap, the settings won’t stick. It seems that after I put my Straight Talk card back in, the apn changes to “phone” Sometimes internet tethering shows up and it always says phone. I delete it, but it keeps reappearing. And it changes the other apn settings to “phone” I change it back, but it keeps changing it back.
    Any suggestions?

I have Straight Talk on iPhone 4, 6.1.3, tethered jailbreak.

I have been on Straight Talk for a while now and everything has worked fine (internet, data, and MMS) until this recent new change in APN. I used to be on the att.mvno APN for data and MMS. Now, the only APN that works for me out of att.mvno, wap.tracfone, and tfdata is the tfdata one. The problem is that I can send MMS but can’t receive them. I’ve edited the APNs, rebooted phone, and reset network connections but still no good.

Any suggestions on how to get it working?

Go to Settings General Reset. Reset your network settings.
      follow the guide.
in part one, look for the tfdata profile and try that first.
read part two to understand how to set up both data and mms

    • LW says:

I have 2 two 3GS phones that did the same. Kept at it and tried this and it still working ( never had mms n still don’t ) but everything else does. Deleted profile, then open Safari. Made sure yahoo was my search engine in Safari(in settings, go to safari n chech yahoo).Search for iapnupdatetfdata.net10.com. The site has goofy letters n symbols. Downloaded that profile and then closed everything, turned off wifi. Restarted and surfing again. Text, and phone ,apps working fine. I live near Texarkana , and so for ,so good.. I had tried several profiles before this, with no help from ST. Why net10.com works? You would have to ask the IT folks. Good luck!

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi LW,
I am glad to hear you got your phone working. Take a look at part two of the guide if you want to try and get MMS working. The APN profile you installed from the Net10 site works because it has the same value in it as the Straight Talk APN file. Net10 and Straight Talk are the owned by the same company. Most of the differences are just branding.

I do want to point out to other readers yo don’t need to search Yahoo, the link you need to install is documented in the guide with step by step instructions.

        Regards
        Bob

      I am using a 3gs “locked” iPhone…
I loaded the straightalk profile and have now can make calls and working 3g internet now…but I want MMS …is this possible with a locked 3GS?

Yousay above to continue to method 2 (Method 2 – Configuring Both Straight Talk Data and MMS for iOS 6) but there is no link or indication where your “Method 2″ instructions are…a little help…

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Tomco,
It may be possible. Many readers report it working for locked iPhones. It’s wort the effort to try if you want mms. Method 2 is in the guide, you just needed to click next page to continue reading to the second half of the guide. Go back and take a look.
Let me know how it goes.
        Regards,
        Bob

  111. Peter says:

Thanks! The 2nd link (tfdata) worked for me.
However, it says in my phones profile “straightTalk not verified”
Where before it was verified. Is that okay? What does that mean?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Peter,
It means the file wasn’t signed. It’s ok though. Was your previous APN profile from Straight Talk or from unlockit.co.nz? I don’t remember the straight talk profiles beening signed.
      Regards
      Bob

Brilliant. Have iPhone 4 w/ios6 but no mms, tried other sites, no mms worked, then lost data capacity, but THESE instructions worked perfectly. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Can I contribute something? I’ll look around the website. :)

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Dave,
Thanks for the comment. I am glad it helped. I don’t have a way to contribute right now. I was thinking of publishing an app or PDF version of the guides for a nominal fee at some point. I am glad your phone is working again.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi De Vera,
Are your data and MMS working? Straight Talk does not support Personal Hotspot. It’s against their terms of service. Has this worked for you in the past?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi jenny,

I tried the install and got the data working but I am unable to configure the MMS messaging. I dont have any other sim cards to swap the straight talk card with. On ething I did notice is if you look at the profiles ‘more details’ it says that it expired this morning at 3:45 AM, could this cause a problem with getting my phone to work??

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Stormcloud134,
Try going into settings and do a reset network settings. Then follow the guide. Try the APN profile for tfdata again. I’d have to look at the profiles expiring. Not sure it would make a difference.

Let me know how it goes.

I have an iphone 3GS on Straight Talk. I got an unsolicited message Sunday from 553-30 that said “Please power your phone off and on to receive latest updates!” I figured it had to be either Straight Talk or Apple, so I did it. After that I could no longer connect to cellular data or MMS. Phone worked as normal and text messages went through.
Much trouble to find answers and your website helped me get going again.

    This is what I changed.
Original APN settings (that quit working):
    APN–att.mvno
    MMS–att.mvno
    MMSC–http://mmsc.cingular.com
    MMS Proxy–66.209.11.33:80
    MMS Max Message Size 1048576

    New APN settings (that work):
    APN–tfdata
MMS–tfdate (Edit by Bob — I’m guessing he meant tfdata)
    MMSC–http://mms-tf.net
    MMS Proxy–66.209.11.33:80
    MMS Max Message Size 1048576

I have an I phone 3G with a straight talk SIM card that used to work fine except for the MMS. We’ll now nothing works except talk & text. I know very little about these phones. Where do you find APN my phone has a VPN. What to do?

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Lisa,
Remove any installed APN profiles. Go into settings general reset and reset network settings.
Read the rest of this guide to show you how to remove and install the APN profile. You need to click next page to read the rest of this guide. It shows you what to do. You screens will look a little different if you are running ios 4 or ios 5.

Everything was working fine for me up until yesterday and my MMS does not work any longer. I stayed on the phone with ST for over an hour to no avail. Anyway I followed your guide and everything works now but I can’t receive MMS messages. I can send them put I can’t get them. I did the sim swap but I still can not receive. Help Please :)

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Melissa,
Did you SIM swap? If so, what settings are you using? Are you still on iOS 6? Also you can try some of the recommendations here: Net10 Data, Internet and MMS APN Frequently Asked Questions.

Also be advised I am getting some other readers reporting the same problem. It may be a problem on the Straight Talk network.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Melissa says:

Yes I did try the sim swap. I am using ios 6 but that is what ST is telling me the problem is. They last rep I talked to said I had to update my phone to the newest update or it would not work any longer. I was trying your instructions first as I really don’t want to update.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Melissa,
I don’t think you need to update your phone, and right now, i don’t think it would help. A number of readers were told to update since iOS 7 came out. Many people SIM swapped or installed the profile and got their phones working. The last few days a lot of people are having the same problem. Keep an eye on the smartphonematters.com home page.

          Regards
          Bob

  131. Sarah says:

So I got an iphone 4s from a friend. I was told after it was carrier unlocked that I would need to do additional stuff to fix the messaging. Well, after the sim and minutes were activated I went online to straight talk to do what she told me and I couldn’t figure it out. So I called. She gave me one of the URLS you have posted and told me to enter it and everything would start working. Surprise surprise, it did NOT! I googled what to do. Found your site, got the 3rd url to work, yes I did this 3 times….lol. Then MMS was still not working so I went to the second method. Saw that I had to switch out sims and do all that, but I don’t have the original sim. So I went into the settings and manually entered under “cellular data network” used the tracfone one cause that’s the one I got data to work under and walla! I have working data and mms thanks to you! Should have just gone to you in the first place :D Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

  132. Armando says:

Bob, I don’t know who you are, but you deserve a medal of honor for this guide (and straighttalk deserves a swift kick in the pants!) I could never understand why my wife’s iphone 3gs only got picture messages from certain people and why she could never use data away from wi-fi. She would blame me for only buying her phones that are cheap refurbished junk, and while that may be true, I still thought the data and MMS should work. Thanks to your detailed (I need pictures) guide I was able to get it working (swaping sim cards…who is expected to know this stuff!!!). Thank you very much for all the time you put into this guide. It is a huge help. We all owe you (especially Straighttalk!).

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Armando,
Wow! a medal. cool! I am psyched to hear 1. you are saving money buying refurbished phones, 2. saving money using Straight Talk, and most importantly, 3. Your wife is (hopefully) happy, now that you fixed her data and MMS. And that my friend is exactly what I started this web site for.

Thanks for taking the time to share your story.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Victor,
Thanks for the comment. That URL is in my guide. that will work for users with the tfdata APN. There are similar URLs for the other two profiles. The APN profiles will only get your data working, not your MMS. See the second part of the guide for a description of how to get MMS working.

  139. Ed Rose says:

    Bob,
Just tried the setup and it works perfectly! Easy instructions. But the pictures you included make it super simple and almost mistake proof. First time I tried it, I missed the point where you actually need to remove the T-Mobile sim card and re-insert the AT&T card BEFORE you begin changing the APN info. Otherwise it goes right back to Straight Talk (AT&T hidden) settings.
Thanks for such a great post!!
    Ed

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Ed,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I am glad your phone is working. Yes, that is a common mistake, I tried to make that clear in the guide, maybe I need to go look at it again. I think my iOS 7 guide might make it clearer.

        Hi Bob,

I have and iphone 4 that I have had since last december. Today my data completely stopped working. It said could not activate cellular data network. I cannot do anything at this point.

I seriously love you. You are a wonderful person for providing this service. My data stopped working yesterday, suddenly. I had forgotten APN settings even existed and was using really old ones (not even from Straight Talk). Thankfully, the TF one you had in the guide here works.

You’re a lifesaver. My fiancee lives in England, and when I’m not at home, I rely on my 3G to communicate with her. Might sound silly, but it’s extremely important. So happy to have it back. Thank you thank you!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jesse,
Thank you for the kind words. I am glad my guide helped you. I am also very happy to hear that you are now able to talk with your finacee again! (do you guys use skype or facetime? just curious). I don’t think it sounds silly at all. It makes your lives better and that is awesome.

    Hi All,
I have been going a few days without data and wondering what the hell is going on with my service, it switched from HOME at the top to TFW, (I learned that means tracfone wireless) but anyway my phone service was off at that time because I was late on my payment. However when I paid my bill I was still getting the no celluar connection message, every time I tried to get on the Internet, or use data without wifi!
    Here is what I tried:
go to this website while on wifi on your phone,http://iapnupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com
it will prompt you to continue you must delete your old straighttalk profile, (I was a little worried about this, but so glad I went thought with it)
exit out and follow through with that
go back to the website and it will prompt you to download the new version
I just tried this tonight, and got on facebook to test it and its working fine! I hope this works for everybody else!
    Thanks Bob! :)

When I swap out the T-Mobile sim card and put in the StraightTalk AT&T card, I automatically get kicked back out to the settings menu and the cellular data network option is no longer present.

I’ve tried restarting the phone with the T-mobile sim as well as editing items in the cellular data network while swaping sims. I have also reset all of my network settings to no avail.

    Any ideas?

  148. Timothy says:

So I have a at&t sim on straight talk I can access data I can send MMS. The only problem I have is receiving MMS and I tried all your steps and the different APN profiles. Data only works when im using TFDATA profile. Before this recent renewal everything worked fine for me on att.mvno. Then all of a sudden everything stopped working so I had to start using the TFDATA APN now everything is working but receiving MMS.

I’m jail broken so I can change my apn iPhone 4.

    Please help me.

  149. Brianna says:

I went through the first APN change attempt which did not work but I am now unable to open Safari. I turned the wifi back on and am able to use facebook or other apps, but not Safari, so I can’t try method 2. iOS 6.0.1 (10A523), not a new customer. Unlocked and jailbroken iphone 4.

I had MMS and data since February so this is a new issue. I tried changing APN settings which always worked before for MMS, but the lack of data is new. This is probably a stupid question, but would it be due to an update? My husband brought home an iPhone 4 and we both paid our bills the day this suddenly happened. May be a coincidence but weird. Thanks.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Brianna,
Are you saying that you cant open Safari on your phone? Or are you saying you can’t load web pages, even over Wi-Fi? When you say you changed the APN. Do you mean you downloaded and installed an APN profile from the Web or you went into settings to Cellular Data Network and entered the values directly?

Try this. Press and hold the lock and home button until your phone restarts. Test Safari. First on Wi-Fi, then on Cellular Data.

You know, I am hearing from several people who said they paid their bill a day or more late and are having troubles.

Let me know and we can go from there.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Brianna says:

I cannot open safari on either wifi or cellular data. Of course the cellular data isn’t working which is part of the reason I’m here, haha. I click safari, it opens, and then it closes immediately.
It is jailbroken through iBooty (tethered). Originally my husband downloaded a profile and since then when MMS is a problem, I redo the APN settings to what was downloaded I guess, it’s ones I was given by a friend that worked all this time. Since the data and MMS quit working, I realized there must be a different issue. So I came here. I do not currently have a profile installed (?) because I went through your #1 and removed it when it didn’t work as you directed.
I just tried to go in and change my APN settings just to see what happens and I don’t have the “Tether Me” option anymore. What is going on with this thing?!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Brianna,
If your Safari closes after you open it, its crashing and that isn’t good. Go into Settings->Safari. Clear History. Clear Cookies and Data. Go into Advanced->Website data. Scroll to bottom and Remove All Website Data. Restart your phone but holding the home button and the lock button until it reboots. Try to Open Safari. If it opens try to load a page using W-Fi.

IF you are using a tethered jailbreak, and TetherMe and /or other jailbroken apps are missing, you may need to do the tethered boot again to run your phone jailbroken again. I am by no means a jailbreak expert, but that is the issue with the tethered jailbreak isn’t it?

I’d focus on getting Safari running on Wi-Fi and lets go from there.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Brianna says:

Ok Safari works. So now I’ll try method #2 (I think).

          • Brianna says:

Ok. Since I was able to open Safari (and internet apps) with wifi, but still did not have data or MMS, I tried method 2. I started by removing the current profile and bam, safari closes even with wifi on. It “crashes” I suppose in that it looks like it’s going to open and then closes. Facebook and another internet app opens but my email and calendar doesn’t either. I am so lost!

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Brianna,
Did you try my previous suggestion to go into settings and clear all the data? What did you do to get Safari working?
            Regards
            Bob

I would like to know if I do not have access to wifi and I removed straight talk profile will I still be able to use my data? I want to fix my mms but I don’t have wifi. I’m afraid if I remove the current profile that I will not be able to get back on the Internet. Please help??!????

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Niki,
That is a concern. If wifi on your phone does not work, this is a risk. If you simply don’t have wifi at home, you would need to go to someplace that does.

Once you remove the profile, you won’t have internet until you either successfully sim swap or reinstall the profile. It might be possible to to download the profile on a PC or mac and install it using a usb cable and iTunes.

Let me take a look at that. Is wifi on your phone broken?

      Regards
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Roger,
Was there some event that happened before it stopped working? Did you update your iOS? Did you let your payment lapse? You said your data and MMS were working. Did someone set up this phone for you? It’s unlikely that you had MMS working with out someone setting up the phone for you. Which steps of the guide did you try?

i have looked everywhere for this answer but found nothing so here it goes…
i have an iphone 5 that i setup service with ST with a nano sim. after folowing everything on these guides all my features are working. the problem i now have is i have a jail broken phone and i could use mywi or pdanet for a hotspot but now either work. i try to turn them on and that works and i can even connect my ipad to the hot sport but nothing happens after that. it just hangs.
when i was on ST without the nano sim it worked fine and then i tried AIO service with a nano sim and that worked and now i got the ST micro sim and cut it down with the card cut i got on ebay and started service with ST but no luck.
i started with ST but data speeds were slow and not unlimited which burned me a few months. then i heard about AIO which has LTE speed and 2gb before dropping to 256k speed. then i hear about ST offering 2 1/2 gbs now with LTE so that is why i switched back in case people wonder why.

anyway, i know ST doesnt allow hotspots and that doesnt concern me, i just hope that i can get either mywi or pdanet to work again. i did not use the hot spot much but i really do need to have it working. i may end up going back to AIO if i cant get it working.

sorry for the long winded message but just trying to explain all i can

thanks for any help at all

          wanted LTE so i switched

2nd. AIO iphone 5 with a nano sim. everything worked fine including LTE and pdanet and mywi. 2gb hi-speed then 2g if you max it out

ST stated offering 21/2 gb LTE and cheaper so i switched back.

3rd. straighttalk a 2nd time this time iphone 5 with a nano sim. setting up data was a problem until i found your directions which were awesome by the way! now everything works except mywi and pdanet. i can set it and connect with my ipad or laptop but it is like i have 0 speed. it times out

i have tried all three apn profiles but only one profile even works with data. i can not see the apn settings on the phone either.

          any thoughts?

          thanks

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Ray,

I have an theory of what might be the issue here, but there are a few things that don’t quite make sense to me yet.

If you were using this iPhone 5 on Straight Talk without a SIM card, then it must be a Verizon network iPhone. Did you buy this from Straight Talk? but you said you took it to AIO and then back to Straight talk with a SIM card both times getting LTE service. If it were a Verizon iPhone it should only get 4G HSPA+ on Straight Talk and AIO because a Verizon iPhone, to my knowledge only supports the Verizon LTE band and not the ATT bands.

If it is a Verizon iPhone, I am wondering if mywi and pdanet are not correctly recognizing the the GSM cellular data connection. Maybe this doesn’t make sense because you said the tethering worked on AIO.

Can you tell me which model iPhone you have? The model number off the back of the phone?
            Regards
            Bob

          • ray m says:

            the model number is A1429
when i was on straighttalk the 1st time with a sim is was the verizon network

with AIO with a nano sim it was at&t
with straighttalk now with a nano sim it is at&t again

i am using ios verson 6.1

another weird thing i noticed was i can not send a text to my blackberry using sprint service (work phone) but i can send a text or picture text to my wife using iphone 5 without sim (at&t network)

should i reset to factory settings? that wont upgrade my phone will it?

            thanks

            i forgot…

  159. Chris says:

Bob, I forgot to mention that I followed your guide for iOS6 and tried all three APN settings from StraightTalk and the one from unlockit.co.nz as well.

  160. Chris says:

    Bob,
My wife has an AT&T Iphone 4s that has successfully been running data for over a year on iOS5 (AT&T micro Sim card). Data stopped working a few days ago with the message “Could not activate cellular data service. You are not subscribed to a data service”. Voice and SMS still work fine. I also noticed that we somehow unintentially updated to iOS6, but not sure how and when that happened. The top left of the screen sometimes says “HOME” (as it always used to) and sometimes says “AT&T”. According to an IMEI database website I referenced, the phone is “under contract” (locked?). Can you help us figure this out?
    Thanks very much.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Chris,
Are you planning to update to iOS 7? if not that’s fine. I just want to know before we dicuss getting it to work for iOS 6.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Chris says:

        Hi Bob,

In response to your question – no, I wasn’t intending to upgrade to iOS 7 but that may happen anyway. Somehow, the iOS 7 download started (maybe my wife or I slipped up?). She Googled a way to pause the download but we’re unsure if that will be permanent. I’ve read of issues with the 4s and iOS 7 so we’re not eager to try it.
        Thank you,

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hey Chris,
I think one of the issues is that it caches that download or partial download and there isn’t a way to remove it. It eats up the space permanently. You’ll have to do a little googling. Decide if you want to go for iOS6 or stick with 6 and I can try to help you get it going.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Chris says:

            Hello Bob,
We seem to have removed the unwanted iOS 7 download from my wife’s iphone 4S and would like to stay with iOS 6. To summarize, we have gone through your guide and tried all four APN settings, with no luck. When trying to connect to the internet, the phone displays: “Could not activate cellular data service. You are not subscribed to a data service”. Can you help?
            Thanks very much,
            Chris

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Chris,
            We can try.
Remove any APN profiles. Then do a Reset Network Settings from Settings-General-Reset. Test your data connection. If it does not work. Do a reset all settings. Test your data connection. If it does not work. Press and hold the home button and lock button until the phone restarts. Test your data connection. If it does not work. Try each of the three APN profiles from the Straight Talk site. (no need to try unlockit).

Try it and let me know how it goes.
            Regards
            Bob

          • Chris says:

            Hi Bob,
After ‘Reset Network Settings,’ the second Straight Talk APN profile restored data usage. Thank you very much,

I have an Sprint Iphone 4s 6.1.3 unlocked with a gpp sim and I am currently using a t-mobile straight talk sim. The sim card is active and I can send and receive texts and I can make calls. I have gone through all the steps that you have provided, but I dont think any of them worked. I currently have the unlockit.co.nz installed on the phone using wifi to install it. I keep getting E(dge) connection and I cannot use any data or send any pictures. I have searched for over a week now and still unable to find a solution, so I don’t know if the APN is not working or if it is something else. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

After messing with the phone for several hours last night, I just gave up and put it aside. I picked it up again today and it still has edge on it but it started to actually connect to websites. It was very slow but at least it did something. The network name is showing T-Mobile. I think I may go ahead and get an at&t straight talk sim like you suggested. Thank you for your help.

    • NKY says:

My data connection in my iPhone 4S suddenly didn’t work today. I called Straight Talk. The woman asked me to use Safari (in my phone using WiFi) connecting to
      http://iapnupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com/
to install new APN. You need to remove your old one first. After installed the new APN and restart, my data is working now. The old APN att.mvno is no longer working.

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi NKY,
Thanks for commenting. Yes. Straight Talk is trying to consolidate all its users to tfdata these days. They had three APNs wap.tracfone, att.mvno, and tfdata. This has caused endless problems for users. They seem to move existing customers to tfdata too, either randomly or when you call for help.

If you have carrier update tfw 15.6 (TFW replaces HOME in your status bar) you don’t even need the profile any more. I am not sure iOS6 is getting that carrier update. Maybe you could tell me? what does your Settings->General->About->Version say? If you go to this screen, it may ask you if you want to install the carrier update. Say no, if you want to even well enough alone. Say Update if you want to try and get your phone to work with out the profile.

If you have any info that would help me then I will gladly try it.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Shelia,
If you want to get MMS working you can try the second part of the guide that shows how to do setup MMS. Updating to iOS 7.0.3 might get it to work too. Read the second part of the guide and let me know if you have questions.

After I insert my inactive sim card to change the data settings, the top left of my phone will say “Searcing…” then my phone will reset and I am taken to a screen to activate the sim card and I cannot exit out of it. If I put in the inactive sim card, go to the data settings, then quickly take the sim card out, I have time to put in the required info, but I’m not sure if it saves that way or not, because when I put my activated sim card back in to test it, I get “You are not subscribed to a cellular data service” when trying to get on the internet. I’m running iOS 6.1.3 and using the att.mvno profile. Any suggestions?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Laura,
It sounds like your iPhone may be locked. Try getting into cellular data network while the phone is searching. switching to the home screen and popping out the SIM. Insert the ATT SIM and only go back to the settings after the att sim is recognized. Try to follow the steps in the iOS 7 guide. Hm… I purchased my phone (it’s a 4s) used, off of ebay. so will filling out the form on the at&t site to unlock it even work? if it was never in my name with at&t? I’m running iOS 6.1.3, so I’m guessing I should stick to this guide? Thanks for your help. I’ll keep trying.

        • Bob Thompson says:

There is little downside to asking them.. unless you question where the eBay seller ultimately got the phone from. Some readers have told me they are able to get the swap to work on locked iPhones so yes try a few times. Another reader recommended an unlock site to me that cost $10, I have no idea if they are any good. So you have a few options.

          • Laura says:

Tried a few more times and got it to work! YAY!

I did kind of a mix of this guide and the iOS 7 guide. What I did was put in my inactive SIM and wait for the Cellular Data Network settings to show up. As soon as I opened the Cellular Data Network settings to input the info, I took the SIM card out. I then hit the home button and opened the notepad. Next I put my working SIM card back in and waited till the upper left corner read “HOME”. Then I double tapped the home button, tapped settings, and THEN put the info in the Cellular Data Network settings. After I put in the info I tapped the back/”Cellular” button and closed the settings. After a year of thinking my phone was just crap, my picture messaging and data now work :)

            Thank you so much Bob!

(Also want to add that my iMessage took a while to reactivate. It took a little over an hour, but it’s up and running now. Just had to be patient.)

  166. I have an iphone 5 unlocked (not yet updated) that I bought from the apple store. I would like to fix these problems with your assistance. So should I follow all of your steps or ?? and I already have the APN changed with the unlockit.co.nz/ but it hasn’t helped me with the sending/getting a text pic or picture messaging. Bob, your tutorial worked great once I happened to try sending an MMS WITHOUT restarting the phone after the T-Mobile/AT&T hot-swap. • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Erika,
I don’t know. If I did I would have included that in my guide. You can google for iPhone jailbreak or editing an iPhone backup. I think spending a few dollars for the SIM is worth it if want MMS, but that is just my opinion.

      Hi Jessica,
The first part of my guide, including the instructions for using unlockit will only get your data to work, not MMS. You need to follow the second part of the guide, the sim swap to get MMS working. If you are using iOS 7, try the updated guide.

Go back take a look at the rest of the guide and let me know if you have any questions.

A new symptom. When I send text, sometimes it seems I do not receive the text from the reply. meaning I am not always receiving text message, This was from when I sent a text to one phone #, they got text but I did not get reply from them, but they told me they sent it.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Stephen
          That is the correct URL.

Your Data and MMS APN should have no effect on SMS text messages (shown in green in Messages, blue messages use iMessage). I don’t have any fixes for SMS. If it where me, I’d do a complete restore of my phone and see if it got better. I would also open a support ticket with Straight Talk or do it in the reverse order. You might also want to test with iMessage off just to eliminate that as the source of the problem.

Bob, I have a verizon Iphone 4s which I unlocked with a sim imposter. I bought the straighttalk byop plan and installed the T mobile nano sim that came with the plan. I still have service with Verizon if I remove the straighttalk sim. When the phone boots up with the straighttalk sim the carrier says T-mobile.Is this normal? Also I used your steps which by the way was very well written. I was able to get data working some times. When it works I see the letter “E” after the T-moble banner. The wap.tracfone apn from straighttalk seemed to get the internet data working. I also configured the celluar data network to your spects. One interesting note is I don’t need to do a sim swap as I can go into celluar data through setting any time I want. I have the apn carrier profile and the celluar data configured at the sam time. Is this normal?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jeff,

Usually your phone will say HOME not tmobile. Of it’s working that’s ok. You only need to sim swap with the att sim. The E is edge, that’s 2g data. Order a new att sim from the straight talk web site. You’ll get 4g data and possibly LTE.
Really, trust me. Get it. So much better.

I assume you plan to cancel the Verizon service at some point.

Thanks for sharing your story, it will help other Verizon iPhone owners.

I have an iPhone 3GS. It is not unlocked. It is locked to AT&T. I purchased an AT&T sim for Straight Talk. Used the set ups. I must be missing something. We can send and receive picture messages to individuals if we send them separate text messages. We can send and receive group text messages if all the people on a group text message are iPhone users. We can not send or receive Group text messages even without pictures if any person on the text is not an iPhone. If I try to group text a non-iPhone the text wont go. If I remove the person or persons that is not not an iPhone the Group text will go. I can’t receive Group text messages if the person sending has non-iPhone users on their text. Even worse they don’t know I didn’t get the message. Send as SMS if iMessage not available is turned on? MMS Messaging is turned on? Group Messaging is turned on?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Jason,
If your att contract was up contact att for a free unlock. You can find the link in the net10 FAQ on smartphonematters.com. You need to follow the instructions to sim swap to get mms and group texts working. When your data connection is working you can do all that with iphone users because it is going through iMessage.

      Did you sim swap?

  193. Diana Alanis says:

what if your iphone 5 doesn’t have a sim card and its with straight talk with the network of tfw. how would you put internet on it ?

    I’m having difficulties

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Diana,
You bought the iPhone from Straight Talk or Walmart. Did you walk through all the instructions on how to set it up?
To activate your service, go to straighttalk.com/Activate or call 1-877-877-1986 from another phone. You will need the MEID Number (also known as the Serial Number) which is located on the red Activation Card and on the bottom of the iPhone box in the IMEI/MEID field. You will also need a Straight Talk Unlimited¹ Service Plan, which you can purchase at participating Walmart stores or with a credit card as part of the Activation process.

After completing the Activation, you will need secure Wi-Fi access OR a computer (requires PC or Mac) with the latest version of iTunes and an internet connection. To begin, simply turn your iPhone on, follow the prompts, and then choose a method to set up your iPhone:

      • Using Wi-Fi: Simply select “Use Wi-Fi” then follow the on-screen prompts. When you receive the “Carrier Settings Update” pop-up, make sure to select “Update”; the phone will return to the main screen as the update runs in the background. This process can take up to a few minutes, depending on the speed of your Wi-Fi connection. Note: No SIM card is required for your iPhone, so disregard any messages asking for one.

      • Using iTunes via a computer: Simply open the latest version of iTunes on your Mac or PC computer, then connect your iPhone to it using the USB cable that came in your package. Once you read and agree to the License Agreement, sync your iPhone with iTunes. You will receive a pop-up asking if you would like to download an update for your carrier settings—select “Download and Update.” Note: If you receive an alert saying there is no SIM card installed in the iPhone—simply ignore and select continue. No SIM card is required for your iPhone.

** After completing the setup, you MUST call *22890 from your iPhone to program it.

      6. How do I know if my iPhone was activated successfully?
After successful completion of the update, your screen will display “iPhone is activated”; you can tap Dismiss. Also, the upper left corner of your screen will no longer display “No Service” and will then display signal strength bars and the letters “TFW.”

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

          Hi Jennifer,
The guide is pretty detailed. What is it that you find confusing? I try to help as many people as I can in the comments, so others can benefit.

If you have the Straight Talk ATT SIM and you have data working great. To get MMS working you need a T-Mobile SIM so that you can get to the Cellular Data Network Settings. Did you try this?
          Regards

Data is working fine and mms was saying “sent” but none of the recipients were receiving the picture… I tried three different people to make sure it wasn’t on their end… What do I do to fix this?

    MMS tfdata
    Name
    password
    mms proxy: mms3.tracfone.com:80

I had to do the t-moblie swap thing in order to get into the cellular data network setting. so After I put in the values given to me I closed everything out and was able to fire up the safari and got everything working.

  202. Kirsten says:

Hi there! I am a prior AT&T IPhone customer who is trying to switch over to Straight Talk. So I bought a AT&T compatible SIM on Ebay. Installed it into my out of contract yet still locked AT&T iPhone. Everything went fine but I am without Data and MMS abilities. I am giving myself a migraine trying to decipher instructions from Reddit, Straight Talk, and your site (the most easy to follow) about how to change APN info! Here are some of the questions that I currently have:

Did I need to unlock phone before doing this? I have done everything but restoring via iTunes, as I was waiting to see if necessary.

How on earth do I actually CHANGE my APN settings? (I am a stay at home mom, not a techie… major regrets!)I have seen different sources saying different things. Download the Straight Talk APN? Go to some crazy unlock.nz thing and download their APN? Problem is that none of it gives me power to manually adjust settings myself!

I would love any input that you have, even if it means linking to somewhere you have already described such info. I appreciate your help so very much!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Kristen,
Hang in there. You do not need to be a techie to be able get Straight Talk data and MMS working. In fact, the number one skill required to get this working is patience. So, Mrs stay-At-Home Mom, you are most qualified to do this.

      1. If you have an off contract iPhone from ATT. Ask them to unlock the phone for you, they will do it for free. See Unlocking your AT&T iPhone. Make sure to follow the instructions about doing a iPhone restore in iTunes when ATT approves your unlock.

You bought the Straight Talk ATT SiM. Good, that is the better choice for your iPhone. you don’t need to wait for your phone to be unlocked to get data working. Now you go and read my one of my guides.
How to Setup Straight Talk Wireless Data and MMS for your iPhone running iOS 7
How to Setup Straight Talk Wireless Data and MMS for your iPhone running iOS 6

One guide is for your iPhone with iOS 6 the other for an iPhone with iOS 7. Do you know what version of iOS you are running? If your phone is running iOS 5 or earlier, let me know, otherwise read the appropriate guide. Make sure to read all the pages in the guide. Focus on getting data to work first by using the web browser to install the APNs.
If you do this, you should be able to have data working.

For MMS, you are going to need an old T-Mobile SIM to trick your iPhone to let you enter the Cellular Data Network settings to get MMS working. That SIM will cost you anywhere from 99 cents to $5 on eBay. After that follow the second part of the guide and work carefully.

If you do all of this you will save over $540 dollars in your first year using Straight Talk, and what stay at home mom couldn’t use an extra $540 dollars a year!

Now, go try and get data working, and let me know how it goes. Really you can have data working in 15 minutes or less. And order that t-Mobile SIM!

      Regards
      Bob

Does the tethering work if you set it up for the same profile apn, like right under the mms section of the cellular data menu, I believe it says tethering, apn, password, username or something like that, if we type in apn, just like at the very top of the screen, will tethering also work?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Lisa,
I am glad to hear that you have data data and MMS working. I once tried to see if I could get tethering to work but it did not. Straight Talk also states tethering is against their terms of service.

Please help I’m getting very bothered. I recently got an iPhone from my sister and purchased a SIM card from straighttalk. I cannot receive or send a bulk message or send or receive picture messages to or from non iPhone users. Need assistance before I throw this phone out.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi June,
I know this can be frustrating, but if your sister gave you an iPhone and you are going to use it with Straight Talk you got a great deal! If you can get it Straight Talk data and MMS working you will save a lot of money compared to AT&T. If your iPhone is running iOS 6 or greater and you want to get MMS working you will need a T-Mobile SIM that you will temporarily put into your phone so that you can enter the correct Cellular Data Network settings into the iPhone.

Read the entire guide from start to finish. Let me know if you have any questions after that.

      Regards

Bob: I’m lost by everything up top honestly. I was stupid and I downloaded ios 7 for my I phone 4 (unlocked) that I have been using on straight talk for sometime. Since I did the download I can use the phone but I do not have data any more. I went to Cellular Data Network and it is not there. I reset my network settings like you stated. Any ideas? I love the phone and I know I can’t go back IOS 6 now so tell me what I should do?

  212. ghostmechanic says:

    Hey Bob,
I never could get MMS to work on straight talk. I tried every conceivable variation of settings from here & other places. I ended up switching to Go Phone & even there it wasn’t automatic. After a 2 hour online chat with a very helpful girl at AT&T that ported my # etc, she had me call Apple. OMG they’re useless. They don’t “support the use of prepaid networks” even though they sell their phones through a few lol.

Anyway if anyone else just can’t get their 4S to work on straight talk I’d recommend switching to Go Phone & I’d be more than willing to send them the settings needed. I didn’t wanna just post them out of respect for what Bob is doing here.

Also can anyone confirm for certain the wap.tracfone settings on an iPhone 4S with 6.1.3 work??? Or have MMS settings for that setup? Judging by my new settings I think there’s something wrong with those because ALL other MMS APN settings have a web address for the proxy except those. I’d love to switch back to straight talk if I could get it to work since it’s $15 a month cheaper. But not having MMS is a deal breaker for me.

BTW, when I first switched to Go Phone I had visual voice mail until I changed the APN settings which is odd…

  213. Catherine says:

So, I did the unlockit website to get the apn settings because it seems the straighttalk servers were down seeing as how none would load for me on safari. All my apps work, and I can browse the web, but I still cannot send or receive picture messages. Normal texts work fine. I can send and receive calls, I can use imessage, I can use facebook, and all my other apps too. I cannot receive or send pictures through normal text messages, but can through imessage.

I have an iPhone 3GS that was given to me from my mother in law’s friend. Formerly an AT&T phone. (When I ordered the sim for it from Straighttalk, it looked like former AT&T phones and TMobile phones took different sims, so would the sim trick work for me if I got my hands on a TMobile sim?)

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Catherine,
Hmm. Didn’t load, ok, strange. But unlockit is basically the same thing. the APN profile on straighttalk.com and unlockit can other configure data, not MMS picture messaging. There three different size SIMs.
standard SIM, micro SIM, and nano SIM. iPhone 3gs (standard SIM), iPhone 4 /4s(micro SIM), iPhone 5, 5c, 5s (nano SIM). You need to order the correct size SIM for your phone. You can cut the bigger SIMs to the smaller size with a scissor or buy an adapter to make a smaller SIM bigger.

The SIM swap worked for me and many many people. It doesn’t work for some people at all. I don’t know why. Still some people have problems with it, come here ask for help and they can get it working.

Let me know if you need more help.
      Regards
      Bob

I got the Tmobile SIM and tried the SIM swap option, but I couldn’t even get a Cellular Data Network option to show up. I restarted the phone with the SIM in and still, nothing showed up.

  214. Holly Westover says:

Hey bob!! After this tutorial worked perfect for me, I’m now trying to do this for my friend. He has an iPhone 4 that’s on the straight talk att service, I have my tmobile chip to insert that I bought to do this trick. When I just updated to iOS 7 it still showed me the cellular data network when I put in the tmobile chip. When I do that to his phone it just says “no service” up in the top left corner and it doesn’t show me the cellular network even after I restart the phone with the chip in his phone. The only thing I can think of is I paid $15 to “unlock” my phone completely and that’s what I did after I left tmobile with the chip I needed. He has not done that as we both got our phones from gamestop. Hopefully you can help me again!! Thank you so much for everything!! :)

Hi Bob, I bought an unlocked Iphone 5 off Amazon along with a nano sim card. Bought At& T sim card and am up and running. BUT I can’t access face time. Is this due to straight talk or am I doing something wrong? I also am running version IOS 6.1.4 and don’t want to update to IOS 7. With that being said I am able to browse internet. So I just need to have settings to receive and send picture mail. Everything else such as texting receiving and sending is working fine for right now. The “steps I used to set up my iPhone 5 with Straight Talk Data and MMS.” that you mention change the fact that I already get safari access or will this enhance what I have by allowing me to send and receive pictures and possibly use face time? Thanks

Thanks please let me know. I keep checking back here everyday.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Isabella,
sorry for the delay in getting back to you. If you follow my method 1 in my guide you should be able to get data working. If you follow method 2, you should be able to get both data and MMS picture messaging. Facetime should only need a data connection. I tested it on the cellular data on two iPhone 5 running iOS 7. One phone was on Net10 the other on Straight Talk. So the issue isn’t the cellular network.
Are you saying your FaceTime works when you are connected on Wi-Fi, but not over the cell data coneection. If you what happens when you try to make a facetime call when using cellular data.
            Regards

Great site, compared to straight talk support who are virtually useless.

Tried all your profiles and also phoned straight talk who gave me the following settings for an apn. I havent tried these yet as I still trying to work out how to great a profile. Ill stick to android devices much easier to get behind the bonnet.

    Name: straight talk
    apn: wap.tracfone
    proxy: 216.155.165.40
    port: 8080

ill not bother with the mms settings which are of no use to me as I dont use mms.

All of the apns on your site either gave me, a pdp authentication error or could not activate moble data network you are not subscribed to a mobile data service.

Voice works as does sms, phone is registered onto AT&T good signal strength. Phone is iphone 4 with 5.0.1 (9A405) build.

    Hope you can help.

    Cheers

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Martin,
I don’t actually know if the three Straight Talk APN profiles I link to work on iOS 5. They do on iOS 6. If you can go into Settings->Cellular->Cellular Data Network directly on iOS 5 try setting the APN there. There are three wap.tracfone, att.mvno, and tfdata. You can also try going into the Settings->Reset and clear the Network settings.

Finally. I noticed you said. Voice works as does sms, phone is registered onto AT&T good signal strength. Are you seeing ATT in the network status bar? It should say HOME.

Straight Talk sells both ATT and t-Mobile network SIMs. Do you know which one you bought? If you picked up a single SIM in a walmart there is a good chance it’s a T-Mobile SIM. I have had readers that have had this really nasty problem.

They buy a Straight Talk T-Mobile Network SIM
They activate it and put in in there iPhone
The T-Mobile network really poor or no coverage in their area
The T-Mobile network is covered by ATT in that area
T-Mobile & AT&T don’t support data on prepaid plans under that condition (read that on the T-Mobile site a while ago)
The iPhone shows its connected to the ATT network, it never gets a valid data connection (PDP error)

If you use a prepaid plan with your iPhone in the US, you are generally better off using one on the ATT network. The T-Mobile network and the iPhone are less compatible.

Check the packaging from the SIM. See if it is a T-Mobile network SIM (was the card pink?). If you get an ST ATT SIM you should be able to transfer the service over to the new SIM. You may not be able to buy the Straight Talk ATT SIM in a Walmart, they might only be available on line. If you need to switch services, look for a Net10 ATT SIM or an ATT Pay and Go SIM. Net10 is available at Kmart, Target, Radio Shack and other retailers. ATT, well, just about any mall.

I noticed the .uk email address, is this a temporary SIM or are you switching over for permanently
      Cheers
      Bob

      • martin says:

        Hi Bob

thanks for your very detailed reply.

I bought the sim in walmart, the sim is pink, ie its T-mobile! Shame I didnt do my research before spending a lot of money on something that only delivers half of what I want! This is a temporary sim for while Im in USA for a month. I knew ST used AT&T but didnt realise they also sold TMobile sims, unfortunately I bought the wrong one!

Yep phone is registered onto the AT&T network not tmob. Network search only shows AT&T where I am right now. Couple of the profiles obviously worked, in as much as I didnt get the pdp error but I at least got as far as the VLR/HLR to discover that my subscription doesnt include data on the AT&T network. Ill have to keep an eye open for T-Mobile and see if the data then works. but because Im registered on the AT&T network and a data service isnt provided.

Ive used pre-paid sims all over the place and never had so much trouble, not helped by the iphone complete lack of transparency over the apn settings.

If it wasnt for the very carefully worded disclaimers on the packaging Id go ask for my money back but they could say, you were out of coverage, good for voice but not for data. I cant believe how expensive it was either, my post paid plan in the UK is half the price of this 1GB of data including tethered devices and as many minutes as I can eat.

        M

Did you turn Wi-Fi back on in the Settings? If it still doesn’t work and you know your wi-fi password you can go into the Settings General Reset and do a Reset All network settings and then try to reconnect to the wireless network.
Let me know how it goes.

Are you able to browser the web without using Wi-Fi?
Finally, you mean Straight Talk customer service, right? not Apple…

      Let me know.

      Regards

Bob, followed the guide exactly. Used the wap.tracfone settings but still unable so send an MMS with the iMessage turned off. Any ideas? The wap.tracfone profile was the only data profile that would work for data purposes alone.

  224. Dana says:

Hi. I recently am switching to straight talk from att, and in the process, lost data and mms messaging. I’ve read your step-by-step, and purchased a t-mobile sim card.

In going through your steps, I have got the data to finally work (THANKS!!) – tfdata worked for me, but can’t really get started with the sim swap because once I put the T-mobile sim card in there and get to step 9, I can’t get the “Cellular Data Network” to show up in my settings. I’ve turned the phone off and started it up. I’ve taken the sim out, restarted the phone, and then put it in. I’ve started completely over with Step 1.

Any advice you can give me to let me get this on my phone?

    Thanks!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Dana,
This is a common issue, Check out this page. Read through all the links. You may want to do the Restore iPhone, but try doing the resets first to see if you can SIM swap. Did you update to iOS 7 yet?

      Regards

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hey Dana,
That is a good question. Some people have trouble getting to Cellular Data Network. I don’t know why.
I am not sure whether upgrading to iOS 7 will make it better or worse. If you plan to upgrade, go ahead. You should be able to get data to work easily on iOS 7.
Do you knoww if your iPhone is unlocked? Did you ask ATT to unlock it.

            Regards
            Bob

            Hi Dana,

On setting up the picture messages during the SIM card swap, I have the APN name wap.tracfone. I just wanted to verify what to enter for the MMSC. The article has http://mms.tracfone.com listed as the entry but in the picture just below it the entry is .net instead of .com. Which one should be used? Thanks

      Hi Sabrina,
I am not sure have an answer for you. I do hear from some readers that have problems like this.
What APN settings are you using? Are you sure MMS is working in one direction? Do you understand the difference between MMS and iMessage?

Finally, are you planning to update to iOS 7?

    Hi,
First of all, I appreciate your effort! I used the steps to activate data and tfdata seems the one for my phone.
I’ve brought 4S from Asia to the U.S. After switching to AT&T sim card, now I have another issue came up. I hear that my phone send messages from both of my Asian number and US number OR either number randomly. This issue was found out from my friends who have both of my number.

Have you seen anything like this?

I’ve tried to update phone number, but iMessage menu doesn’t let me click while General>Phone number is already updated automatically.

Please let me know if you have heard about this symptom!

    Thank you.

    Hi,
Very helpful guides but here is my issue. I have a 4s which I successfully setup on ST using the BYOP process. It previously was on AT&T – GSM. I had zero problems and everything still works great. I live right next door to an AT&T tower in a very rural area so it’s paramount that I get on the ST-AT&T network which is very fast for me. I just purchased a brand new iPhone 5 from ST. To setup the iPhone 5 from ST I did not receive a sim and I also have a T-Mobile nano sim (cut down to nano) for the switch. I’m getting cold feet since I’ve read elsewhere that my instructions from ST to call *22890 for programming the phone result in getting on the Verizon network which I definitely want to avoid. I know ST has started selling AT&T sims again. What are my chances that I can get on the AT&T network (Sept 2013)? I have my 4s ST sim which I could cut down to nano if necessary. Or I could send this back unopened and buy an unlocked GSM phone from Apple and just go the BYOP route again. Do you have any advice? This is the best site I’ve seen for specific questions and I very much appreciate it.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Karen,
Straight Talk sells SIM cards for customers bringing their own smartphones. They sell SIM cards that use both the ATT and TMobile network. Straight Talk also sells iPhones, but the iPhones they sell use the Verizon network. Kind of confusing, isn’t it. You don’t need to use my guide to set up data and MMS on an iPhone you bought from Straight Talk. In that sense, actually easier to get Data and MMS working on Straight Talk’s iPhone.

If it were me, I would return this phone immediately. I am not sure what you paid for the iPhone 5. But Apple will start selling the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. You can even pre order a iPhone 5c from Apple now (or wait..). My reasoning is that:

      • You know you are happy with the ATT service were you live, there is not reason to go to the Verizon network.
      • Your iPhone 5 on the Verizon network will only be 3G speed, not 4G LTE
      • You can get a newer model phone, probably for the the price you paid.
      • In my opinion, you’ll get more money for the GSM iPhone if you want to sell it later.

A couple of other points. The new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s will come with iOS 7. I don’t know if it will be easier, harder, or even impossible to get data and MMS working on the iPhone with iOS 7. I plan to get a new guide on smartphonematters.com as soon as I can update my phone.

Also, an unlocked iPhone 5 supports super fast 4G LTE. If you want super fast data, you might want to consider ATT Pay and Go prepaid for $60 a month. You can get in store support, and i don’t think you need to deal with all these APN profile and SIM swapping for MMS.

Please let me know if you need more help and how it goes for you.
      Regards
      Bob

      • KarenF says:

        Bob,
Thanks so much — you and I think alike. I never even opened the box but now have to get the return instructions. I paid $750 + tax for the iPhone 5. I know I can get a 5s for same price so I will get that from Apple. I’m going to return this, wait for my credit and continue on with the 4s for a couple of weeks. I will check the AT&T prices out as I may return to them — lots less hassle. So glad I avoided the Verizon network — my particular location is bad for them — friends who visit have problems. So I’m a happy camper! You are terrific!

        • KarenF says:

Wanted to let you know I received my unlocked full price 32GB silver 5S iPhone on 10/1 and got the $60 AT&T plan that day. If you use the kiosk at AT&T you don’t have to pay taxes. It’s great and I’m so pleased. The $60 plan includes unlimited phone calls and messages and 2GB of data per month which is way more than I need. I’m getting a great signal and can go to AT&T anytime I want for help or service. No more ST – no more watching YouTube videos and getting T-mobile SIM cards and going through hoops. ST was great though in the sense that it got out of the contract loop and paying all those taxes. Thanks for the great advice.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hey Karen,
This is great news. You made an informed choice. That is a theme here at smartphonematters.com. Does your phone show that you are getting 4G LTE speeds, you should be. I was pretty close to switching for LTE, but both Straight Talk and Net10 are now offering LTE, so I am waitng for my new SIM to try it out. And you are right about the stores for support. People always complain about their cell phone company, but when you can walk into any mall and get help that is a huge benefit.

Enjoy your 5s, let us know if you have any issues with Pay N Go. I want to write a guide for that soon.
            Regards
            Bob

    Hi-
I have an iPhone 4s with Straight Talk. I was able to get MMS and data working using TetherMe and unlockit – then I recently updated the ios to 6.3.1 and now the MMS and group texts do not work.
What do I do from here? I can’t see Cydia/TetherMe on my phone anymore – does the ios update delete it?
Do I need to get a Tmobile card to do the SIM swap or can I do it with TetherMe (provided I can find it) or should I restore to the old ios?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Becky,
It sounds like your iPhone was jailbroken. that is what allowed you to run Cydia and TetherMe. either you, or someone jailbroke your iPhone. If you want to be able to run Cydia and TetherMe, you need to jailbreak your phone again, either going back to the previous version iOS you were using, or finding the most update to data version of iOS that can be jailbroken.

If you want to keep your current iOS update without the jailbreak but still have data and MMS you can try the SIM swap. If you used other apps from Cydia and TetherMe to use your iPhone as a hotspot, you’ll need to jailbreak again.
If you decide to try the SIM swap, follow the guide. Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

Trying to fix my husbands iphone 4S 16gb white.

His mms & data will still not work after trying both processes. With step one- I get the data working with “tfdata”. Then I do process two…

When I get to step 8-10, I always have to power off to get “cellular data network” to show up.

Don’t know if it’s an issue- but on step 8, when I take out my ATT Straighttalk sim, my phone says “SIM DATA FAILURE” instead of “NO SIM Installed”.

Anyways, I complete the second process, remove the tmibile sim- enter the settings (from tfdata) with my correct sim in place, restart the phone. but after boot up- and turning off wifi and imessage- it doesn’t work.

    Thanks!
Sidenote: I did this to MY phone and everything worked great, but husband’s phone is having issues- mine didn’t have the weird sim card error message- we both have iphone4s 16gb, mine is black, his is white)

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Bree,
The guide only works for black iPhones… no wait sorry, why do you have the black iPhone and he has the white iPhone? All kiding aside.. Is his phone locked or unlocked?

Here are a few things to try.

Reset your network settings and then try SIM swapping. If it doesn’t work

Back up his phone, from iTunes do a Restore iPhone, reload iOS if offered the option.
When hiss phone is factory fresh, then do just enough setup to get to the home screen and then SIM swap. This doesn’t work for everyone but it does work for many.

Let me know if you try it and how it goes.
      Regards

      • Bree says:

so- sorry to blast you with comments. but I got it working!

His phone was just super picky! He needed to use the TFDATA settings (which we knew). But- we had problems with sim swap & his phone not recognizing his straighttalk sim after re-insertion.

I played with a bunch of options- powering off phone & turning on with NO sim installed, then inserting T-Mobile sim & accessing settings, then QUICKLY removing tmobile tim & inserting straight talk sim- and waiting almost 8 minutes until “HOME” appeared at the top of the screen and THEN entering settings.

My phone responded to swapping sims immediately- so maybe I was just being impatient…

But it was literaly about 8 mins before his phone recognized his sim was back in!

Once his sim was recognized and the settings were still up- I added the anp settings and rebooted phone.

        Works perfect!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Bree,
I love comments. I wrote my guides to help people, but I only had two iPhone 5 to set up for my family. Your comments help me improve the guides and they help other readers too. So thank you for commenting.

I am really happy to hear you got your phone working. In the past, I have seen older smartphones take a long time to recognize a SIM card. I have never seen an iPhone take 8 minutes! I have heard from a few other readers with this type of problem. Now I can tell them to try waiting 10 minutes or so.

This is great news. Nice job on staying patient and being persistent. I wish Straight Talk, AT&T, and Apple would just get this worked out so we didn’t have to do all this. But then again, I like saving more than $500 a year on my cell phone bill.

Let me know if you have any more problems and if I can help.
          Regards

    Hi Bob,

I’ve tried the SIM Swap Method repeatedly and still am not able to get MMS to work. The only APN that works for me is wap.tracfone and I am able to browse the internet just fine. However, MMS and group texts are not sending.

    Here is my setup:

    APN: wap.tracfone
    Phone: AT&T iPhone 4 unlocked
    iOS: 6.1.3
    SIM: Straight Talk AT&T SIM

I have tried entering the MMSC as http://mms.tracfone.com and http://mms.tracfone.net. Additionally, I have tried both MMSC’s with http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf in the MMS UA Prof URL field, but to no avail. I read on another site that someone had success with leaving the MMS Proxy blank, but that has not worked for me as well.

My wifi is on during the process. After I get into Cellular Data, I open Notes before switching out the t-mobile SIM with the Straight Talk SIM. When the Straight Talk SIM is inserted, I wait until HOME 3G appears before toggling back to Cellular Data and entering the settings.

Do you have any additional suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Tina,
      I can try to help.
Now, you mentioned that you followed the instructions from smartphonematters.com. Did you follow Method #1 and download the APN profile, or Method 2 the SIM swap. Method #1 will only configure data, not MMS picture messaging. This can be a little confusing because with a data connection you can use iMessage to send picture messages to other iPhone users.
If you would like to understand this a little more see Understanding the Difference between MMS and iMessage on Your iPhone.

So for MMS picture messaging, follow Method #2. If you have any questions, let me know. If you did follow method #2 and it did not work, check out Help with Straight Talk on the iPhone

By the Way.. You mentioned that you bought two nano SIMs from Straight Talk. I wan’t aware Straight Talk was selling nano SIMs. Can you share the link to the web site you bought these from.

  248. gary says:

When I insert the ATT-sim, I cannot find the option of “Cellular Data Network” ,when insert the T-mobile one, I can find the option, what’s wrong?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Gary,
Your iPhone is programmed to hide Cellular Data Network when an AT&T network SIM is in the phone. It does this because it automatically programs the AT&T APN values into the phone so you don’t have to. Unfortunately they are the wrong values. You need to put in the T-Mobile SIM verify you can see Cellular Data Network, put the ATT SIM back, then enter the before Cellular Data Network screen before it disappears. It’s a timing issue.

Follow the guide. You can usually get to Cellular Data Network ater putting the ATT Sim back in the phone while the status bar says Searching.

If you are unable to do this, follow my previous recommendations on reseting and restoring and it may lengthen the time you can see Cellular Data Network

      Regards
      Bob

      • gary says:

        Hi Bob,

Thanks for your detailed information, but even if I reset the network, every time I insert the ATT-sim, the Cellular Data Network disappears so fast, only left Personal Hotspot in that place.

I also want to make sure that before I try this, the profile you mentioned should be already installed, right?

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Gary,
You install the profile to get your data working. This tells you which APN to use and eliminates have to try so many values when sim swapping. You must remove it before sim swapping or else you will never get mms to work. When you put the att sim in you should see the status bar go from no sim to searching. That is the time to go back to cellular data network. If you can’t get to cdn, I’d try the reset iphone I recommended earlier. Remember, this is. A hack, you are taking advantage of a timing issue.

Let me know how it goes.
          Regards
          Bob

  249. Jose Gonzalez says:

Hi Bob, So i have an iPhone 4S unlocked from ATT. I tried the first method and data worked for me with the second APN setting from straight talk. Now I want to get MMS. Am I going to have to delete the profile I just installed and have to do the SIM Swap method? That has worked for me already but I want to try keeping the APN profile that already works and just find a way to activate MMS. Any thoughts?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jose,
You need to remove the profile in order for the SIM swap to work. When you remove the profile, your data will stop working until you either successfully complete the SIM swap or restore the profile.

I always recommend that people do method #1 first so that they know which Data APN works for them. You may need to SIM swap several times to get the correct values. Knowing your Data APN reduces the number of values to try.

Before you SIM swap, make sure you know which of the three APN profiles worked for you. You can remove it, re-install it, and verify your data works. Save that URL as a bookmark or email the link to yourself. Remove the APN profile. Try the SIM swap. If the SIM Swap works and you get data and mms working, thats great. If you have a problem with it, reinstall the profile until you want to try the SIM swap again.

If you leave the APN profile installed and try the SIM swap, your data will work and your MMS will not, even if you entered the correct values. It will drive you mad because you won’t be able to figure out why MMS doesn’t work. I have made this mistake before. I often remove and reconfigure my settings when I am helping people on this site. I forgot to remove the profile myself once, and wasted a couple of hours trying to find the problem.

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards,
      Bob

I did find the card swap out portion of your instructions confusing when it came to which sim card to install and when. TMobile/AT&T Straight Talk sim? Thanks!

      Hi Mark,
      If you are SIM Swapping.
      1. put in the T-mobile SIM
      2. make sure you see the Cellular Data Network option in Settings
      3. remove the T-Mobile SIM
      4. insert you ST ATT sim
      5. enter the settings
The T-Mobile sim makes Cellular Data Network visable.
You enter the values after putting the ST ATT sim back in. (which is after the iPhone populates the wrong values but before it disappears)
Follow the guide. If you don’t ever see Cellular Data Networkoption in Settings
      Read http://smartphonematters.com/help-with-straight-talk-on-the-iphone/

        Thanks for your reply Bob!

        I don’t have a T-Mobile SIM. I have an AT&T SIM.

I’m unsure if the Straight Talk SIM I have is AT&T Straight Talk or T-Mobile Straight Talk. I’ve been assuming it’s AT&T Straight Talk.

Neither SIM allows me to see Cellular Network Options.

Any advice? Thanks for your site here. This has already been a big help to me.

        Thx!

Bob, if I buy a TMobile sim card for $10 from TMobile.com, do I have to activate it to do the sim card switch? Will the switch work w/out the TMobile card being activated? I would spend $10 for that. Thx! Mark

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Mark,
The SIM card does not need to be active. It doesn’t even need to be a T-Mobile brand SIM, just for the T-Mobile network. Many people use the Straight Talk, Net 10, or other prepaid T-Mobile network SIM. If you bu one from T-Mobile for $10, great. Yuo can find cheaper on eBay or Amazon, under $5.

I will just repeat that I can’t guarantee that the SIM swap will work for everyone. Some people never get the Cellular Data Network option. I don’t know why.
          Regards,

          Hi Bob,

So is there any other thing I can do to solve the problem I have?

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Gary,
There are some more things to try. Yes. Read this.
            http://smartphonematters.com/help-with-straight-talk-on-the-iphone/

when you have one of the APN profile installed, Wi-Fi off, and try to load a web page what do you see in the status bar? If you don’t see HOME and a 3G or 4G let me know.

Be sure to read the Net10 FAQ. The link is on the page above. Since your iPhone is an international GSM iPhone I would strongly suggest you backup your phone,
do the Restore iPhone… from iTunes and follow the guide again. Restore the backup only after you are done trying to get Data and MMS to work. Make sure to check any options to reload iOS during the Restore. Again BACKUP your data.
I will also add that many people are reluctant to try this last step. I recommend it because readers have reported that it works.

Let me know how it goes.. BTW.. what is the model number on that back of your iPhone.
            Regards

Hello, i have a iphone 5 with the t-mobile carrier and it is locked. But,i am using a straight-talk t-mobile sim card which was on a regular size but i cut it and make it nano. call and regular text works but mms and data does not. i tried doing the steps you have posted above but that does not help. i will wait for your helpful respond thank you.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Hema,
Try to just get data to work first.
Go into settings and reset your network settings
after that you will need to re-enter your WiFi password.
Go into settings and remove any profiles that are installed.
then try going into your Cellular Data network settings and set only the DATA APN to wap.tracfone
      save, restart the phone.

I am curious why you would change from T-Mobile to Straight Talk T-Mobile? Was the service poor? Do you think its a better deal?

      • Jeff says:

My own experience with Tmobile and Family Mobile was that at home or at work, I could never generate a solid signal and data/internet was impossible. Straight Talk must use different towers? I never had that problem with them. So I ended up back with them a month ago.

Hi Bob, I already have an iPhone 4 with straight talk. I want to upgrade to an iPhone 5, but I do not see the nano sim card for sale at Straight Talk’s website. Do you know where I can get one? Or would I have to buy the iPhone 5 from Straight Talk directly?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Fernando,
Apple may be announcing some new iPhones today on Sept 10. You may have some new iPhones to choose from. Straight Talk does not sell nano SIM cards(iPhone 5). They sell SIM (iPhobe 3GS) and micro SIM cards (iPhone 4/4s). Most people cut there SIM to fit the iPhone 5 using a pair of sharp scissors or a tool called a SIM cutter. You need also may need to sand down the SIM a tiny but to fit. Or other option is to scan eBay or Amazon. Many sellers offer precut SIM cards.
See my Net10 Guide for more info. Most people are able to cut the SIM without an issue. They are pretty sturdy. I’d check eBay if you don’t want to cut it yourself.

Another option is to buy an iPhone from Straight Talk. For me, this wouldn’t be the best choice for the iPhone 5. the iPhones that Straight Talk sells run on the Verizon’s 3G network, not their super fast 4G LTE network. You’ll pay the same price for your Straight Talk unlocked Verizon iPhone 5 as you would for an unlocked GSM (ATT / T-Mobile) iPhone 5. If at some point you wanted to resell your iPhone 5, the GSM model would sell for more (check eBay and CraigsList .. this is my observation). Additionally, a GSM iPhone 5 will usually get 4G HSPDA speeds on Straight Talk using their AT&T SIM. That is not as fast as 4G LTE, but faster than Verizon’s 3G (I haven’t measured this, again an observation).
I have never been a Verizon customer, but my understanding is that you can’t talk and use data at the same time.

Finally, I’ll mention that you may want to look at AT&T pay n go, if you would like 4G LTE with your iPhone 5. it is more expensive, but will allow you to get the fastest speeds. I myself use Net10 ATT SIM in the iPhone 5. (Net10 is basically the same thing as Straight Talk). I get 4G speeds but sometimes do think about going to Pay and Go for the speed.

If you can, let me know what you end up deciding or if you have more questions.

      Regards
      Bob

    • Rob says:

      Fernando,

You can cut a regular Sim card to fit Nano Sim Slots.

Carefully use a pair of sharp (full-size) scissors.

Careful to cut from the edges, only enough for it to fit.
DO NOT Cut through the circuitry of the Sim Card.

I cut my Straight Talk Sim to fit a Nokia Lumia this way.
I removed the plastic door/tray to use as a pattern.

      Hope this helps you.

  267. Rich says:

    Hi Bob,

I’m so close to get everything working, but can’t get past this last MMS issue. I was able to get my data working with the profile from http://iapnupdate.straighttalk.com. Then I tried the SIM card swap trick with the T-Mobile SIM card. The profile I had installed was the APN with wap.tracfone. So when I got my cellular data network tab, I entered the settings for that one (although I’m not sure which MMSC was to be used as it was listed as http://mms.tracfone.net in the attached photo in your guide and then listed as http://mms.tracfone.com in the data you typed out). Either way, I tried them both and still can’t get MMS to work. Any ideas?
Also, I should clarify that picture messages are working with the wap.tracfone profile. The thing I can’t get working is group MMS messages…plain text nor pictures will work.
    Thanks!

  269. David says:

Thank you so much for this helpful website. My problem is that I have been able to do the sim swap successfully on 2 occasions now, but my settings are being wiped out after a few days forcing me to do the sim swap again and I cannot figure out why. I have an iphone5, running ios 6.1.4, using the tfdata settings, and I have not updated/synced my phone during this time. Is there anything I may be doing to wipe out these settings, or is there something I can do to prevent this from happening. Thank you.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      David,
I wish I had an answer for you. I don’t have a solution. You are not alone. Other readers have told me they have this problem too. Some people say it’s because there phone is getting carrier update messages forcing the change back to the ATT values. Other readers report iTunes does it to the. I have no way to know but i wonder if for some reason the iPhone briefly thinks there is no SIM in the phone, detects the SIM again, and repopulates the ATT values. That is just a guess.

Here are the options I can think of.

      1. Decide you are sick of this, and switch to AT&T pay n go. $60 a month. 4G LTE. There shouldn’t be this MMS or reset issue
      2. Live without MMS. I can show you a trick to easily restore data to your if you lose it when you are not home. and you can then SIM Swap for MMS later.
      3. Wait for iOS7. Let’s see what happens when iOS 7 comes out which could be as early as Sept 10, maybe all of this gets better, hopefully not worse.
      4. Another tricky hack. Lets discuss it after iOS 7.

I am sorry I don’t have more to offer. If I do find a solution I will post it here.
      Regards
      Bob

I have an unlocked Iphone 4s from AT&T. I bought a straight talk SIM card and have worked out several of the kinks with MMS and internet. But now a new problem has popped up: When I sent a group text, I cant get replies. Any advice?

  272. Stef says:

    Bob,
I am a ninny. Just realized I was following net-10 instructions despite having Iphone4, att micro sim (sold to me by ST). In any event, I activated sim card this morning, but do not have ability to use phone. So I’m don’t meet your minimum criteria to set up MMS/Data et al as in your guide. I followed ST APN update, but cannot find cellular data network referenced below:

Scroll down and tap “Cellular Data Network.”
Under “Cellular Data Network,” enter the information provided in the table on the left for the APN Settings.
Click on the HOME key to go back to the main phone screen.
Go back to “Settings” one more time, scroll down and tap “Messages” and turn it ON.
Press the HOME key and you are set to send and receive MMS!
Once you have set it up and tested to see it works, you can re-enable “WiFi,” turn OFF “Data Roaming” and turn ON “3G” (or leave it OFF if you’re not in a 3G area for AT&T devices on our network).

Have you any experience with this?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Stef,
Straight talk and Net 10 are owned by the same company and they even use the same settings. No big deal there. I think you need to take a look at the guide again. The first part of the guide shows you how to get your data connection working by downloading an APN configuration file. This will only work for your data connection. To get both data and MMS working you need to follow Method 2. You need a tmobile network SIM card to access the Cellular Data Network option. That menu is hidden when any ATT network SIM card is in your iPhone.

Take a few minutes to go back and read the guide end to end. Read this page for more details about the tmobile sim. This page applies to Straight Talk as well as Net10.
      http://smartphonematters.com/faqs/net10-data-and-mms-apn-frequently-asked-questions/

If you really need / want MMS it is worth trying the sim swap. Take a look through the comments on this guide and you will see that many people were able to do it. If they can, so can you.

Let me know if you have more questions.

      Regards,
      Bob

  273. Bryan says:

    Hi Bob,

I recently got a StraightTalk SIM from the BYOP (bring your own phone program) so I could use my iPhone 4S from Sprint on Straight Talk…to my dismay I can’t use the iPhone 4S because Sprint won’t unlock it for use on any carrier, so I had to go out and buy an unlocked iPhone 5 GSM phone from Apple.

Once I did this I cut the SIM down to work in the iPhone 5 SIM tray and everything works great on it…except MMS. I can surf the web at 4G (BLAZING FAST), send emails with attachments…but can’t send pictures except through iMessage.

I’m using the Straight Talk APN Profile dated Sept 4 and under advanced settings it’s named TFDATA.

What do I need to do to get MMS working?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Bryan,
OK. Do you know if your Straight Talk SIM is an Straight Talk ATT SIM or a Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM? I am going to assume it is the ATT one because you commented that you are getting 4G data, which most iPhone users dont with the T-Mobile SIM. The page you left your comment on is a a multipage guide that shows how to set up MMS. You need to do a little hack called the SIM swap. You’re going to need a T-Mobile SIM card. Take a look through the entire guide again and let me know if you have any questions.

        Hi Bob,

I don’t have T-Mobile Sim card….is there any other way around it?

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Bryan,
I usually tell people to just buy a T-Mobile SIM on eBay or Amazon. Any T-Mobile network SIM will work. You can find them for under $5 already cut to the size you need. You’ll end up spending more time looking for a work around that you won’t find.
          Regards

      • Bryan says:

Hey, I have the iPhone configuration utility…can I use that to solve my problem by creating a custom APN?

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Bryan,
That isn’t going to help you. You can create an APN profile, but that tool only allows you to enter the Data APN, not the MMS APN and related information. That is why the configurations files on the Straight Talk site cant configure your MMS.
I don’t know why Apple doesn’t support that.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Bryan says:

Would it work if I have the Sprint SIM card and then pop that in and do the procedure or do I need a T-Mobile one?
