Help Setting up Straight Talk Data and MMS on the Samsung Galaxy Mega Running Android 4.2

This page explains how to set up your Straight Talk Wireless data, internet, MMS picture messages, and group texts on your Samsung Mega using Android 4. If you are unable to browse the web without wi-fi, send and receive MMS picture messages and group texts this page may help.

This page will show you how set your Straight Talk Wireless APN settings on your phone. Your data, MMS picture messages, and group texts won’t work unless you have set this up correctly. This page is only for people using a Straight Talk Wireless SIM with Straight Talk’s AT&T-compatible network or Straight Talk’s T-Mobile compatible SIM.

If you were searching for one of the following APN Settings or values, this page might just be what you are looking for. Don’t worry if you have any idea what these mean.

APN tfdata, att.mvno, wap.tracfone
MMS APN tfdata, att.mvno, wap.tracfone
MMS Proxy,,,
MMS Port
APN Type
MNC 410
MCC 310
APN Type default, mms, wap, supl

This page won’t help if your Mega is using Straight Talk’s Verizon-compatible or Straight Talk’s Sprint compatible network. This page will also not help if you are unable to place and receive phone calls or send and receive SMS text messages. Contact Straight Talk Wireless support if voice service or SMS text message are not working.

Smartphonematters has a number of very detailed guides that explain how to set up Straight Talk APNs for iPhones, Android, and Windows phones we use. See our APN Settings Guides. We created this help page, and our other help pages for phones we don’t have, but readers have asked for help with, see our APN Settings Help if you are are looking for help with a different phone.

I can’t find the APN on my phone! Please help!

  2. Cheryl says:

I called straight talk and it worked only one time, then I try to send another picture message it will say “message expired” I tried this and everything else and nothing is working

  3. Mark says:

I just got a galaxy mega that’s sprint compatible. Can u tell me what I need to do to get it running with straight talk plz? I’ve been trying to teach myself but terms like apn ect have me at a loss

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Mark,
If your phone is from Sprint, and you are activating it as a BYOP phone uou’ll need to register your phone on the the Straight Talk network and then activate it with a plan. Your phone can only be used with Straight Talk’s Sprint network. You’ll need to go their website, enter your MEID to see if it is eligible. If it isn’t you can call them to double check. If it is eligible, you’ll need to buy a network access code to register the phone. Once successfully registered, you can activate the phone with a service plan.

If you bought the phone from Straight Talk and it is using the sprint network, you just need to activate it.

When you activate the phone, you’ll dial a number on the keypad. The phone should automatically set up the APN. You won’t be able to do it manually. Some readers report that they are able to get 4G LTE service immediately, others tell me the get 4G LTE after calling Straight Talk.

  4. Andy says:

I can’t get my mega to work at all

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Andy,
Are you using the Straight Talk ATT or Straight Talk TMobile SIM? Can you make voice calls and send text messages? If data isn’t working? Did you set up the APN?

  5. Jeremy says:

I have tried different APN’s…data works fine and I can send pictures but I can’t download any that ppl send to me on Straight Talk Samsung Mega 6.3…it says unable to download.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jeremy,
f you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.

This is a common problem. You can also try setting your APN type to default, mms, wap or default, mms, supl for the Straight talk ATT and T-mobile SIMs respectively. Some readers have had luck by trying different MMSC and MMS proxy values

  6. courtney says:

i am having trouble having internet i have tried so many settings but nothing works its a galaxy mega 6.3

  7. James says:

I just switched my att galaxy mega 6.3 to straight talk using the recommended apn straight talk gave me every thing is great except for mms picture messaging which I don’t really use it sending almost all pictures through Facebook I was wondering about doing a factory data reset to get all the unwanted att apps off quickly if I do will that mess up my new apn settings?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi James,
I want to start out by saying I have never had an ATT Android phone. I am not sure that doing a factory reset would remove the ATT apps from your phone. They might be part of the factory software, making them impossible to erase

If you did a factory reset on your phone that would erase your APN settings and you would need to re-enter APN settings again. I wouldn’t be too concerned about getting your data working again. You mentioned that MMS isn’t working, which would be the bigger concern.

Very few people have issues getting Data working once they enter the APN, MMS is more problematic. If you do decide to do a factory reset, would you mind letting me know if that got rid of the ATT apps.

  8. Elandis Hardy says:

Do I put all of those settings for the galaxy mega?

  9. Shoney says:

Hi. I have the Samsung Mega 6.3 4.4.2 and up until last night I was getting 4G LTE. I have just restarted my plan last night/this morning and my data speed is significantly slower and the 4G LTE symbol is now only 4G. I’m confused. I’ve been on the bring your own plan for months and this is the first month this has happened. My APN settings are as follows…

    Name: Straight Talk
    APN: tfdata
    Port: 80
    MMS: Proxy:
    MMS: Port: 80
    MCC: 310
    MNC: 410
    APN Type: default,mms,supl,hipri,fota

    APN Protocol: IPv4

I’ve called Straight Talk and they’ve walked me through steps I already know to do to do simple troubleshooting. They could not answer why the 4G LTE has turned into just 4G. I wouldn’t be concerned about the symbol if my service was the same but it is ridiculously slower. Ran a speed test and DL was 0.05 Mbps UL 0.08 Mbps. Any recommendations? Please help me.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Shoney,
      I don’t know.

Those speeds sound like your data is being throttled. When you use up 3GB of data, Straight Talk throttles your connection. I know, you just activated it so you could not be at the quota. Some iPhone users have reported really slow speeds after a software update. I have seen really slow speeds with my phones for a really short time. Some times resetting / restarting the phone helps.

A lot of people report this happening around the time they refill their service.

It’s not uncommon to have your phone switch between and LTE and 4G connection. I have noticed that sometimes it takes several hours or a day for newly activated phones to start getting LTE. I can’t say that losing LTE is or isn’t a symptom of this problem. your current speeds are slower than 2G data, nevermind 4G or 3G.

This problem is really a pain in the a**. I wish I had a solution. You can try some random things to see if it helps or locate the problem.

Try your SIM in a friend’s phone. See if data is slow
Try your friends SIM in your phone. See if it is fast
Restart your phone a couple of times.
And finally, from the ST website, transfer your service from your current SIM to a new SIM. This resets some account information and sometimes fixes the issue.
Some people report the problem resolves itself after the next billing cycle.

Few people report getting the problem resolved by Straight Talk. Try calling Tracfone (they are the same company) executive resolutions department. This department is much easier to deal with. There are no magic words to say to get them to fix it. You can try something like.

      1. I know my APN is correct, my data works. It’s so slow its unusable. Can you reset or reprovision my account?
      2. I tried my SIM in a different phone and it was slow. I tried a different companies SIM in my phone and it was fast.
      3. I really like Straight Talk, I would hate to have to switch to another prepaid wireless.
      4. My phone is slow, almost like is my data is throttled. I know I couldn’t have used up my 3GB limit.
      5. My service was great in the past, I just reactivated it and now it’s unusable. Can you deactivate it and reactivate it? Please.

I used to hear about this problem from readers a lot. Yours is the first case I have heard for several months.

Sorry I could not be of more help. Please let me know if you have more questions. And please if you can, let us know the outcome.

hi i have the samsunga galaxy mega 5.8 with straight talk ive had service with straight talk for about 6 months now.. ever since i can not send or receive picture messages. i have called straight talk for help and they couldn’t figure out the problem…could you please help me!

  12. willis fox says:

I can receive pictures but can not send pictures on my galaxy mega…need help with APN settings

  13. Tee says:

Hey, I’ve not been able to send and received regular text messages since Thursday..apn settings have been deleted and reset. I have data just not able to send text messages…straight talk was no help at all they told me to rest my phone and that they were sending a sim card in 3-5 days can you suggest anything else?? I even used your settings…I have data but no text messages.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Tee,
The APN settings are for Data and MMS picture messages, not SMS text messages. I can’t say if its a Straight Talk problem or a problem with your phone. You can swap SIMs with a friend to try and see if the issue is your phone or the Straight Talk SIM.

Did you try resetting your phone? I’d power cycle it. And if that doesn’t solve the problem I’d consider doing a factory reset. Backup first, so you can restore.

      • Tee says:

Did a factory reset yesterday, put tmy Sim card in another cell still not able to send and receive messages. I don’t know what else to do.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi tee,
I’d say if you can’t send mms messages from using your sim in two different phones it’s a straight talk problem. Call them open a support ticket. Ask them to send you a new sim. If they won’t I’d buy a new one and transfer my service to it. The problem may not be the sim itself, but transferring the service may reset whatever the issue is on their side. Again, that is what I’d do. I can’t guarantee it will work.
Let me know how you make out.

  14. Randy says:

I unfortunately never had att service, i just paid full price for the mega and went straight to walmart to buy the byop package. It was all fine until that update. When I spoke to straight talk they said they received thousands lol of calls about this exact issue. I will try and ask at an att store if they can do it. If not I will keep on searching.
    Thanks for ur info

  15. Randy says:

    Hi Bob
I tried all you posted. I got my mega flat out from att n did the bring your own phone from str8 talk. All was fine until that android google update. Recently I was told att locked their phones on phones that are not using their service. Did anyone hear this? I read some other things to do with kit kat but I have no idea what that even is..just asking. Its a real nuisance that from that update I cannot get or send mms..
Ur info btw is so easy to understand.
    Thanks for ur hard work

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Randy,
      I don’t know.

The recent Android update for ATT LG Android phones is causing a lot of problems. On those phones, the APN type is grayed out and can’t be changed. I haven’t heard a similar report for ATT Samsung Android phones. In the case of the LG phones, I don’t think they are locking these phones, I think they just customized Android for ATT. ATT is responsible for firmware updates for the Android phones they sold. They distribute a version customized for their network.

Based on your description, it sounds to me like you are able to change the APN type but need to type it in on one line. I have not reason to believe that if you don’t get a pop up list for your APN type that your phone is locked. I have a Nexus 5, its unlocked, I never had a popup.

So where does all this leave you?

      1. Ask ATT to unlock your phone.
If you where an ATT customer, and completed your contract ATT should unlock your phone. Its easy to request and free. So ask them and let’s see.
I don’t have enough experience with 3rd party unlocks to recommend them, and in your case we don’t really know that is the problem.

      2. Try entering your APN again.
If you can enter the APN type, try default, mms, wap. That’s comma seperated, no period. You can also try doing a reset to defaults from the APN screen. Delete any APNs on that screen, and then create a new APN with your settings. This seems to help a lot of people.

      3. Root Your Phone.
ATT LG Phone users are solving this problem by rooting their phone. After rooting some are using apps to modify the APN type in the phones database. Others aree downgrading their firmware. If you want to try this do a google search for rooting your Mega. Read the instructions and decide if you would be able to do that. LEt me know if you think you could root your phone. I can share with you what LG users are doing and you can try that.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help.

Ok I have got the apn from net 10, I have tried all of your apn’s and I still do not have any mms abilities. I can’t send not receive pictures. Please help. I’m on my att galaxy mega. I do have internet.

  18. Sandra says:

I understand. I’ve had the phone for only 5 days now. I get 2weeks to see if I like it.i can send it back with no fees. So I call atnt cancel there then can I keep the phone or do I have to take it back to Walmart? And if I can keep it atnt shouldn’t do anything.

    • Bob Thompson says:

I don’t know. I’d try to return it to walmart. If you cancel with ATT, I am sure they will charge you for the phone, assuming you didn’t already pay full price for it.

  19. Sandra says:

I bought a galaxy mega at Walmart 2yr atnt contact. I have a few day left to send it back. I’ve had it 5 days. Can I buy a straight talk kit and use atnt and hook it up. Internet said yes then it said no. Which is it

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Sandra,
If you bought the Galaxy Mega from AT&T with a 2 year contract, the phone is locked. A locked ATT phone should work with a Straight Talk ATT SIM. If you terminate your ATT service, ATT will expect you to pay an Early Termination Fee, which will be very expensive. They may also ban the phone from being used on any att network.

My advice would be to return the phone, and buy a new or used unlocked smartphone. Then sign up for Straight Talk.

  20. Chris says:

For mine to work I had to add hipri, wap to an type. Authent. Type is PAP. APN Proto is IPV4 and APN Roam Proto is IPV4 also. Now mms works too

  21. Randy says:

All the codes are identical to what u put. Straight talk told me just now the apn type should give u choices n if it doesn’t that means your phone is locked. They also said google did an upgrade and it will effect the mms n the day my upgrade happened is the day mms stopped workin. So either I get my phone unlocked or is there something I can do about reversing the upgrade?

  22. sharmine says:

I have the Mega 6.3 Im using a Straight Talk SIM I followed the instructions but I’m not getting my calls and my txt wont send

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Sharmine,
These instructions are for data and MMS picture messages. If you can’t receive calls or SMS text messages, contact Straight Talk. You can also try resetting your phone, but the problem most likely needs to be fixed by Straight Talk.

  23. Randy says:

I have the Galaxy mega and my phone did some sort if auto update. All the settings are the same but my apn type says default, hipri . I ttried numerous things I can send mms but not get them. Any ideas?

  24. Amy Johnson says:

I have 3 different apn’s set up for straight talk on my at&t galaxy mega 6.3 running kitkat. I have the “tfdata” chosen right now and it shows at the top of my phone 4G/LTE and im able to get online/facebook but I cannot send or recieve pictures and haven’t been able to for some time. Very very frustrating! Any help with this available?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Amy,
You only need one APN. Follow the instructions on the page. Make sure you look up your APN settings using the link in the instructions on my page.

      • chris says:

I have followed this to a tee and I experience the same here with the one apn. Everything works fine , but the mms pic messages will not send or receive

  28. Antonio says:

Hello, I have been using the at&t version straight talk sim card in my galaxy mega 6.3 for quite some time now and never had a problem until I did a reset on my , now no data and when i tried your apn settings i only got H+ data which is very slow :( please help!!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Antonio,
The H+ means HSPA+, which is 4G, but slower than 4G LTE. If you had LTE before, try restarting your phone and see if it comes back. Your APN doesn’t control the speed of your phone. I live in the boston area. An both my Straight Talk and Net10 phones on the ATT network where very slow for a good part of the day, so maybe the problem will clear up.
Let me know how it goes.

  29. james says:

Cant send pics but can recieve yhem please help

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi James

If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages.

You can also try setting your APN type to default, mms, wap or default, mms, supl. Some readers have had luck by trying different MMSC and MMS proxy values. Read both the following articles and the comments to see what has worked for others.

Help with Straight Talk and Net10 MMS Picture Messages and I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4
Let me know how it goes.

  30. Rob says:

I just started using the Mega on straighttalk. I have data working slowly and mms working intermittently. Is there anything in the settings I can improve the performance im getting?
I was using y the Galaxy Note before without these issues

  31. cheryl says:

I added a new apn with all the new info; then I deleted the other existing apn; yes the green dot was highlighted; everything works except mms. i was sending the pic to myself, so it’s not an iphone, and i also tried sending to a friend with an android. all it does is spool. i have no problem with sending written “text” messages. this has been my life all around for a week now! 😉

    • Bob Thompson says:

Yo can take a couple screenshots of your APN screens and email them to me if you want.
bob at the name of this site. Press the power key and volume down at the same time to take a screen shot. You might need two to get it all.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Cheryl,
Your APN looks correct in the screenshots. If your Wi-Fi is on. Try turning it off. Sometimes this is a problem on Android.

  32. cheryl says:

Ugh! Those settings did not work either. I am using the sim card I previously had in my iphone, and I’m wondering if that would make a difference. Maybe I need a new card. When I called ST they said it wouldn’t make a difference but they couldn’t troubleshoot with me because I didn’t have another phone to talk to them on

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Cheryl,
When you added the new APN to your phone, did you delete an other APNs on the phone? Did you make sure you activated the APN. There should be a green dot next to it?
      Is your data working?
If you are using your the SIM you had in your iPhone, try testing MMS with a friend that doesn’t use an iPhone. You may have an issue with there messages to you still going to iMessage.

I don’t think the issue is the SIM. Changing SIMs does sometimes solves problems for people, but I think its because the problem gets resolved on the Straight Talk side when you activate the new SIM.

  33. cheryl says:

Also, it never sends mms; i have no idea if it will receive as i haven’t tried

  34. cheryl says:

Thanks for writing, Bob! They did generate what to put in and I did so, except my phone does not have a MMS_APN anywhere in the settings. What was generated is as follows:

    APN Settings

    APN tfdata
    MMS PORT 80
    MMS_APN tfdata

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Cheryl,
Unfortunately the web site does not return your APN settings exactly like they need to be entered into your phone. Try

  38. andy vu says:

I tried three ways with my Samsung mega, but none of which works. The phone shows strong data signal but I still can’t have internet. Could you please help? Thanks

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Andy,
What is the model number of your phone? Do you know if you are using the Straight Talk AT&T Network compatible SIM or the Straight Talk T-Mobile Network compatible SIM? You can try resetting the APNs to default, deleting any APNs present and adding the Straight Talk APN back. Try each APN value. Don’t worry about MMS just yet.

  39. Rebecca grohmann says:

I have an unlocked galaxy mega got the straight talk kit using at&t grey card/sim that came with. I can get internet send messages Facebook etc I can NOT send pics or receive them I have tried all the above called straight talk etc. Can you send step by step email how to fix this?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Rebecca,
The step by step instructions are on this page. Make sure to test if sending and receiving are working. Did you set the APN following the instructions on this page.

  40. chrisotpher cunningham says:

  43. I used the setting and my talk and text work but still no data. I tried all the variations of setting up the apn and nothing still :(

    • Bob Thompson says:

Which seetings did you try? Which SIM are you using?

      • Chris says:

I used the three different apn settings above. I am using the att card as to mobile is really bad here. I am in Winslow AZ and all services suck except for Verizon and cellular one. My friend, and neighbor have att. And it works, straight talk is sending me a new sim card, but I am concerned that maybe it’s the phone , which I bought brand new

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi chris,
If you have a buddy with using att you can try their sim in your phone and your sim in their phone. Look at the status bar when you are testing data. How many bars do you have? Do you see a network speed indicator? Look for an H 3G E or other symbol in the status bar.

  44. danielle says:

I just wanted to say, I used your settings to help set up my straight talk Galaxy Mega phone and it worked! Thank you so much. I was very frustrated and annoyed before I came across your site. Again, thank you!
