How to Set up Net10 Web, Data, and MMS for Your iPhone Running iOS 7

net10ios7

Introduction

I wrote this guide to share with you how I set up data and MMS picture messaging on my iPhone 5 running iOS 7. Hundreds of readers have used my previous guide, How to Setup Net10 Web, Data, and MMS for your iPhone running iOS 6 to get their iPhone working on Net10 Wireless.

I wrote this guide for my iPhone 5. It should work for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s running iOS 7 as well.

This guide will help you set up your data, web or Internet connection as well as MMS Picture messaging by showing you how to set the Access Point Name or APN values on your iPhone. This guide will not help you if your voice or SMS text messages are not working. You can leave a comment here if you are looking for help with that and I will try to help you.

Follow the guide carefully. Do not skip steps. I wrote the guide based on how I set up Net10 Data and MMS for myself and optimized it based on the hundreds of comments and requests for help I received for my previous guide.

Required Items
  • a GSM model iPhone running iOS 7
  • an active Net10 Wireless SIM card, the AT&T network compatible SIM is best.
  • a Wi-Fi connection
  • A T-Mobile network SIM card (if you want to set up MMS Picture Messaging)

If you are using the Net10 T-Mobile network compatible SIM card you can still use this guide, but you should read Is Using Straight Talk Wireless With Your iPhone a Good Idea? The page is for Straight Talk but it applies to Net10 Wireless as well.

Disclaimer

This guide describes what worked for me. Many people have followed my guide and have successfully set up data and MMS. Some needed to ask for help to get it working, some people I am unable to help.

This guide shows you two ways to set up your iPhone the first is Setting up Data by Installing a Net10 Wireless APN Profile and the second is Setting up Data and MMS by Entering the Cellular Data Network Settings

Good luck. Try the guide. Leave a comment if you need some help.

So I just got an iPhone 4s and have followed the guide, am I basically screwed with the newest update of getting picture messaging to work? I can easily get internet working, but no matter what I do I can not get the cellular options to fix picture messaging. I’m assuming there is no possible way to go back on an update right?

Hi Bob, following you on twitter.

I switched to Net10 from ATT on my (unlocked) Iphone5 in August.

Since then, I have had terrible, truly terrible data…. .04mbps download speed.

I have gone through the APN settings and appear to have one that “works” but my data seems to be completely choked.

Before I go into Carrier update hacks (Carrier Update Hack for iOS 7.0.x) I wanted to verify that is the right direction to take.

I appreciate your help and all the information – there is just so much of it finding the right pieces seems impossible.

    Thank you in advance!
    kalamity

      Hi kalamitydelmundo,
That problem plagues some number of Straight Talk and Net10 users. I don’t know why. Prior to iOS 7.1, I had a solution. The solution was to revert to TFW 15.6 carrier update. That solutions doesn’t work with iOS 7.1+. See How To Change Your iPhone’s Carrier from TFW 15.7 back to TFW 15.6 for Straight Talk and Net10 Customers.

Read the Crav’s comments on the above article. He jailbroke his phone and go TFW 15.6 installed to solve his problem.

I think the Carrier Update Hack will work for you to, if you are comfortable with the limitations of jailbreaking.(for example, no new iOS updates, without jailbreaking again).
Unfortunately, no reader has told me if updating to iOS 8 has solved this problem for them.

I’d have to say if I had this problem, I’d consider switching to ATT prepaid. In fact, stop by an att store when it’s not busy and ask to try a live att prepaid sim if they have one. Run a speedtest or to. You don’t need to switch at that moment. Just tell them you won’t switch until your current month of service is up.

I haven’t gotten my hands on a phone with this problem. I sure would like to find aa solution.

      Regards
      Bob

How do I configure my iPhone 4s settings

  4. Nancy says:

Could you please help me? I’m losing my mind without my photo messaging

  5. Nancy says:

Ok so I tried the APN profile, the att.mvno worked for my data but when I try to change the settings for the network so I can have mms it changes but then neither my network or mms work!… Please help me. I’ve tried all the APN files and only that one works for me data. But when I configure the settings it no longer works. Please help me… I don’t know what else to do!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Nancy,
You can try calling Net10 and try to get them to change your APN from att.mvno to tfdata. They might not do it for you. Tell them your data and MMS don’t work, your data(important) and mms don’t work…Ask them what your APN is, then ask them if it should be tfdata?

You can also buy a new SIM for $7 to fix the problem. When you transfer your service from the old SIM to the new SIM, your APN should change from att.mvno to tfdata and this will solve your problem.

If your iPhone is using iOS 7, it will automatically set up your APN to tfdata when you put Net10’s att SIM in it. The settings page to change the APN on the phone is hidden, so you can’t set your att.mvno APN. Before iOS 7.1 there was a trick you could use but it doesn’t work anymore. Net10 still uses the att.mvno APN on some accounts, usually new accounts are asigned the tfdata APN. How long have you had your SIM for? Was it from another phone.

Let me know how it goes.

      Regards
      Bob

  6. Nicole says:

I have done all of the steps and even called Net10 multiple times. I still have NO data, but I do receive calls and texts. The other issue is that the phone number is not from my area (I have restored the phone). I’ve tried everything… is there something else I can do?

I need help with the data connection and verification of profile for iPhone 5

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Shante,
I am not sure what you mean by verification of profile”.
I understand you have an iPhone 5 and are using Straight Talk. Let me know if you are using a SIM and if you know if its Straight Talk AT&T or Straight Talk’s TMobile SIM.
      Regards,
      Bob

  9. J says:

I do not have a different SIM card to do this swap. This was very helpful until I got to that point

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi J,
Most people use the SIM from the BYOP kit or spend a few dollars to buy one on eBay.

In your case I’d recommend you dont get a SIM go to http://www.net10.com/byop_apn/index.jsp choose Android 4.0 & 4.1 as your phone type. If your APN is tfdata, follow the guide to remove any profiles you installed, back up your phone, tap Settings->General->Reset->Reset All Settings and then test your data and MMS.

If your APN is tfdata, let me know.
      Regards
      Bob

I have had nothing up headache with this service and will encourage others to not use net 10

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Wade,
Sorry to hear Net10 is not right for you. Is you have a specific problem you need help with, ask and maybe I can help. Have you chosen a new wireless company yet? I’d love to hear which you choose and how the experience goes
      Regards
      Bob

  11. Carla says:

I cannot receive any sms anymore nor even imessage since yesterday, but of course i can receive calls and my 3g works. What should i do? might this be a problem with my net10 service or iphone?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Carla,
What model iPhone to you have. The model is on the back of the phone.
Do you know if you are using Net10’s ATT, T-Mobile, Verizon or Sprint network? did you buy the phone from Net10?

  12. Jenny says:

Finally after working on this way too long, I got it figured out. The problem was that I kept sending test MMS pictures to my husband’s phone, and it turns out that it was HIS MMS that wasn’t working. The guide was great and very easy to follow.
Thank Goodness for people like you!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jenny,
I am glad to hear you got it working. Is your husband using Net10 too?

A Tmobile compatible simcard but i noticed is that the carrier settings havent updated for net10 tmobile users for iphone because it still says HOME . i used to have an AT&T iphone with net10 but i see that on the carrier name says TFW instead of HOME because the carrier version was 15.7 and the one i have now says 15.5

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jobany,
Start by going into Settings General Reset and choosing Reset All Settings. (You’ll need to reneter WiFi passwords afterwards…)
Go into Cellular Data Network and set up APN information. Get the correct APN settings for your SIM using the link in the guide. I’d make sure data is working and then test MMS.

if you are having a problem with iMessage it may not be a Net10 problem. iMessage has some weird issues.

Finally, so readers have reported strange issues with Net10 issues. See My Straight Talk or Net10 TMobile Network Data Stopped Working!

      Is your T-Mobile iPhone locked?
      Regards

Yes, same here, wasted $50 this month. No more I’m switching to Tmobile prepaid.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jobany,
I don’t understand if you are asking a question. Follow the guide to set up your phone. Once your data connection works you should be able to use iMessage with Wi-Fi or cellular data. If your iMessage isn’t working, what is the specific problem you are having?
      Regards,
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

also.. are you using the Net10 ATT network compatible SIM? or Net10 T-Mobile network compatible SIM?

  17. Stephen daigle says:

I am no good at this stuff and net 10 is no good at helping there tech. Support sucks I can’t understand them I payed for service but can get it i need help!!!!!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Stephen,
You didn’t mention what phone you have or what problems you are having so it is hard to offer any advice. If you are having problems with data and mms with an iphone, I suggest your read my guide. You left your comment on the guide, click on page 2 to continue to read the guide.

Ive tried for DAYS to get the internet to work on this phone after switching to NET10. I spent HOURS on the phone last night w/ Net10 with no results. So as fustrated as I was today, I googled and found you!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At last, it works!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Michelle says:

OK, I can’t find my messages here. Bob, did you see my response giving the details you asked?

  20. Nate says:

Today I updated from my ATT/Net10 iPhone 4 to my girlfriend’s old Verizon iPhone 5. After the restore it was using one of the 6.0 version iOS and I was showing 4G data in the top left. I updated it to 7.0.4 and now it shows 3G and I’m only about 4mb DL speeds. Being a Verizon phone with ATT sim, I know I will not get LTE but I will get HSPA so it should still be in 4g. Any ideas? How do I get back to the faster data speeds- this is just about the only reason I even bothered to go through the effort.

(I used the 3rd APN setting to get data working)

  21. chlous says:

tried to fix the problem with u.web2go.com redirect
gave 3 calls to net10 support – they were useless: reboot the phone, re-insert sim card, do hard reset. Nothing could help, definitely.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi,
Call tracfone executive resolution, there the same company. Ask them to reset or reprovision your account. Ask them to send you a new sim to try and fix the problem.
I don’t remember, did you previously say net10 att sim was not an option for you?
      Regards
      Bob

      • chlous says:

Thank you Bob Thompson, you paid much more attention to my issues than NET10 support.

You might be right. Before I was cut off the 2nd time – an operator admitted the problem is on their side and she was going to send me a new sim.
ATT works excellent in my location.

They gave me a ticket number – will call and check. If they don’t have a resolution – it’ll be my last month with NET10 (AIO looks much fairer).
Calling tracfone may be a good idea, but I’m afraid it’ll take one more hour.

        • chlous says:

Just spent another 30 minutes with NET10 support.
It should be important to know for everyone: they guarantee data connection in your home area ONLY. This is what they have just told me. I think that’s the worst idea to guarantee internet where I don’t need it (using wifi).
          Good bye net10.

P.S.: Even though they haven’t resolved my problem.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi,
Sorry to hear that. I don’t think they mean in your home though, they mean in your area. They actually try to pick the network you are on based on the zip code you enter sign up with. I have used my Net10 account on the east coast where I live and the west coast where I travel and it works fine. The only place I have been where I didn’t have service was upstate New York. My brother told me no ones cell phone works were he lives.

I am not going to make any apologies for them though. They activated your service in an area that their network doesn’t work. I think you mentioned you don’t have att or tmobile at your location. What about Verizon or sprint?

I’d really like to see you end up finding a prepaid solution that works for you. If you are willing, please share what company you plan to go to.

            Regards
            Bob

          • chlous says:

will try AT&T’s AIO. From what I googled – they must be much more reliable and their reputation is much better

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi
I haven’t tried AIO. I would also compare it with att pay and go. But the cool thing is you could try one and switch after a month if you don’t like it or to see which is better.
            Regards
            Bob

          • chlous says:

No complains on Pay Go, except the plans are a bit overpriced. I was pretty happy with AT&T. Will switch to them with a hope their AIO does the same great business.

          • chlous says:

and, by the way, data plan doesn’t work even in home area
so I paid $50 this month for having phone calls only

  22. Diana says:

Thanks Bob! I just checked and indeed my mms pic messaging isn’t working. >.>

  23. Diana says:

Is it important to set up cellular data network? I don’t have a different microsim card to do that on my iphone 4 gsm. I’m just glad the internet works on it when I don’t have wifi available.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi,
You only need to vet up cellular data network if your mms picture messaging isn’t working and you want to use it. Otherwise you are ok. Most people use the extra sim form the byop kit or buy a sim for a couple of dollars on ebay.
      Regards
      Bob

  24. Cuban says:

I’m unable to find the guide. Where is it on the webpage?

  25. hana says:

I tried all the profiles and my data still does not work. i have an iphone 5 ios 7. please help.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Which sim are you using?

      • hana says:

tmobile sim from net10. my phone is unlocked.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Hana,
Ok. Usually the net10 att sim is the better choice. Do see home or TFW in your status bar. When you turn off wifi and try to load a web page how many signal bars do you see and do you see a 3G or an E.

          • hana says:

i see “HOME 3G” in my status bar, and i have 4-5 Signal bars when wifi is off and trying to load a web page.

          • hana says:

it also keeps re-routing me to u.web2go.com when my wifi is off and i’m trying to load a webpage, and says that my “data plan does not work on this device. click here to sign up for a new data plan.”

          • Bob Thompson says:

Go into settings general reset and reset your network settings.
            after the phone reboots
go to settings cellular cellular data network.
            Clear all the fields.
enter wap.tracfone in the Cellular Data APN.
            Save it
            test data again

          • hana says:

it still doesn’t work. it showed up with that tmobile website that wants me to buy a data plan. i had called net10 yesterday about this, and it wasn’t showing that website until they had me download/or change setting on my phone (they had me changing stuff on my phone and going to webpages). do you think they locked my back my phone thats why i’m getting this t-mobile website when i try to load a website without wifi?

          • Bob Thompson says:

            No.
You phone is just confused. Did you enter wap.tracfone as I instructed? Go back and check if the APN is still wap.tracfone.

          • hana says:

            yes, its still there

          • Bob Thompson says:

What model iphone, it’s on the back of the phone. Which sim are you using?

          • hana says:

            model: a1428. t-mobile sim

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Ok.
Check to see if you have an APN profile installed. If so remove it. The guide will show you how to remove it.
            Try data again.

Let me ask you where you got this tmobile sim. Did you get a byop kit and did it have any net 10 att sims in the package.

This is one of the weirder problems I have heard from a reader so hang in there.
            Regards
            Bob

          • hana says:

yes the apn profile is removed and data is still not working. yes this was a byop kit from net 10, and my data was working for over a year now, but stopped working 2 days ago.

    • Roopy says:

I have the same issue. Mms and data all working fine until 3 or 4 days ago. I’ve tried every profile. I have wap.tracfone next to APN cell data with all other fields empty. I went through each and every profile and still nothing. I am using a tmobile sim for net10. I find it odd that Hanna has the same problem at the same time. Did net10 change something all of a sudden so that we no longer can use data and mms?

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Roopy,
I emailed hana but I never heard back. It took several exchanges before I found out that had service had worked for a year before she had the problem. Go to net10.com/byop_apn/index.jsp. Enter your phone number. Choose Android 4.0 & 4.1. What settings does it return?

I use the Net10 AT&T SIM. I haven’t had this problem. Your the second person, i have heard this from. Too early for me to say it’s a trend. I could try and help you fix it. But, before that. May I ask why you are using the t-mobile sim rather than the att sim? Usually, the ATT SIM is the better choice.

Have you ever considered switching to the AT&T SIM?

        • Roopy says:

I have not switched to the AT&T sim because I do not get service at my house with AT&T. What I’m not sure of is if net10 uses the same towers regardless of which sim you’re using (tmobile vs AT&T). If they use the same towers, I’ll buy the AT&T sim right now and make the switch!
I went to net 10’s website as you specified and checked out the android settings and they are the same as for the iphone. I also tried installing their profile but that doesn’t work either. Just to make sure, you have to type the correct APN settings in as well as install a profile? There are some fields they want you to type info in but there are no fields with those headings (Port for instance) on my iphone.
My wife has an iphone too with the same exact issue. That’s also why I’m thinking the problem may be more wide spread but I don’t see anything online of major complaints just recently. I would gladly switch to a different carrier but don’t know who I could switch to that would use the same towers. Your response, feedback, and time is greatly appreciated!

          • dwitte1224 says:

Did you get this resolved? I have been having the same problem. Been about a week and a half. Keeps bringing the to bile page. Called net10, they put in a ticket and said it will take up to 48 hrs to get an answer.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi
I’ve heard this from 3 or 4 readers now. This is a new problem. I’ll set up a new page for it.
            Regards
            Bob

          • Roopy says:

I went to AT&T and tried their SIM card and data works flawlessly. Brought it home and I only get one bar of service. Made a call and both of our voices were choppy and not clear. Returned the SIM card and cancelled their plan. Back to net10 with tmobile sim with no data. :(
Just got off the phone with net10 tech support who told me to enter the following:
            Cellular Data
            APN wap.tracfone
            Username NET10

            MMS
            APN wap.tracfone
            Username NET10
            MMSC http//mms.tracfone.com
            MMS Proxy 216.155.165.40

Still didn’t work. He then had me install their Net10 profile. Still nothing. He then told me there must be something wrong with my iphone and I should talk to Apple. Hmmm, worked just fine with someone else’s SIM card.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Roopy,
there seems to be three or four of you with the same problem. I’ll add a post to the site and we will see how wide spread the problem is.
            Regards
            Bob

  26. Mike says:

Thanks man, My iPhone 5 is locked to AT&T – they won’t do the customer unlock request even though the account was not delinquent…Whatever, I’m done with $120 per month bills. Anyway, I am using the Net10 sim to get around the lock because there is apparently no unlock available for AT&T phones right now. My phone would only work using the att.mnvo values. Thanks again.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Mike,
If you have an AT&T iPhone 5 and you contract is up or you paid the Early Termination Fee, they should unlock your iPhone. Did they give you a reason why they wouldn’t unlock it.
You should not give up on that. If you paid off the phone, they will unlock it. You may need to talk to one or more reps.

      Regards
      Bob

  27. Dylan Osborne says:

thank you so much! It’s sad when other people are smarter than net10 technicians but thank you so much I can finally use my data.

  28. Amila says:

after couple of hours…finally got it!!!
    thanks:)

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Amila,
Great news. Thanks for the comment.
      Regards
      Bob

    • I just spend 2 infuriating (but educational!) hours resetting my phone – I had an AT&T compatiable unlocked iPhone and STUPIDLY had put the TMobile compatible SIM card in it and was getting SIM card fail errors several times a day and it hit me that I probably should be using the AT&T one. So I just got everything set up – everything works except I cannot send photos to non iPhones or receive them from non iPhones. I hope I can get this resolved. Swapping out the SIM cards was driving me crazy but quite a slick fix to AT&T hiding the cellular data screens!

  33. Nick says:

Hey! So i’ve had my iphone 4 set up on the old APN settings for IOS 6 and ive been getting MMS and Pic messages just fine until this past week. All my imessages come with a delay that could be a few seconds or potentially even an hour. I got notifications to update my carrier settings or something like that but I’m scared that if I do that I’ll loose my ability to use net10 all together. I updated the Net10 profile on July 6th of 2013. should I risk deleting and reinstalling the Net10 profile?

    • Nick says:

Also, I recently got mavericks on my macbook and I’ve noticed that the imessages do not delay on my macbook, but they do on my phone.

      Cheers!

      -Nick

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Nick,
I understand your desire to leave well enough alone. Its the if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. In your case though, your imessage seems a little slow. We might want to accept the update. We also would like to reset your phone (without data loss) and those things might cause your data to stop working, but for most people, getting ST data working is easy, MMS is the feature that causes the problems. Answer my questions below , and let me know if you want to try, and I’ll give you some specific steps to do.

But first let me try to clarify a few things…
If you have been using Net10 with an APN profile installed on your phone. Your data should work, but not MMS. You can check that you have an APN profile installed in Settings->General->Profile. These APN profiles can only configure data, not MMS. If you only have data configured, you can send & receive text messages using SMS and iMessage. SMS messages are green, iMessages are blue. You will also able to send & receive picture messages using iMessage, but not MMS. Typically, this means you can exchange pics to other iOS and Mac users, but not non Apple people.

The second part of my guide shows how to set up MMS picture messaging using the SIM swap, you can read the guide.

Ok. this notification, you received. Was it a text message or a pop up dialog? Did it look like this?
      http://smartphonematters.com/i-cant-receive-mms-picture-messages-using-straight-talk-or-net10-on-my-iphone-using-ios-7-0-4/
      or this http://smartphonematters.com/my-straighttalk-data-and-mms-stopped-working-for-my-iphone/ ?

The second dialog shows a carrier update which is different from a carrier profile. Let me know which of these you received.
      Regards
      Bob

I have an att iphone 4 running ios 7. thanks so much for your guide…very helpful. Got data set up fine. However, i’m having a problem trying the sim swap. i purchased a tmobile no annual contract sim starter kit with sim card. I cut it to size. However when i put the tmobile sim card in, i can’t seem to get the “cellular data network” option to populate.

    any suggestions?

AFTER UPDATED TO IOS 7.0.3, I WAS ABLE TO DO THE SIM SWAP AND FIND APN SETTINGS TO WORK FOR DATA BUT NEVER GOT MMS TO WORK. HOWEVER MY DATA STOPPED WORKING AND I’VE TRIED ALL THE NET 10 APN SETTING AND NONE OF THEM WORK FOR DATA THIS TIME.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Kathy,
Remove any installed APN profiles. (See the guide if you do not know how)
Go into Settings->General->Reset and Reset All Network Settings
      Test your data and MMS
      if it doesn’t work
Do a hard reset press and hold the lock and home buttons until the phone restarts
      Test your data and MMS
      if it doesn’t work
follow the guide, either install the APN profile (use the tfdata profile) of data only or SIM swap to try for data and MMS
and, most importantly, did you know that when you post on the internet, using all capital letters is considered as shouting :-)

      Regards

    MMS APN: tfdata
    MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
    MMS Proxy: mms2.tracfone.com:80
    MMS Max Message Size: 1048576
    MMS UA Prof URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

    Any recommendations?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Nathan,
Visual voicemail is not supported net10. Some people use an app called YouMail. I have never tried it myself.
what issue do you have with iMessage? Does it work on Wi-Fi? iMessage has many bugs. Usually the issue is not Net10, its iMessage itself.

i was wondering why it shows that im on 3g network when i pay $50 dollars a month.. why i cant have 4g or LTE if my phone is capable? can it be done by changing the APN> pls help.. i dont want to have 3g on my iphone.. if theres a way, can you send the new APN, PLS. MY VERSION IS 7.0.2.. THANKS

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jose,
Your APN does not control whether you get 3G or 4G. It’s a combination of your phone, the network in your area, and your SIM card. Are you using a Net10 ATT SIM? or the T-Mobile one. you can order a 4G LTE SIM from the Net10 web site. They started selling th LTE SIMS in September. I upgraded my SIM and went from 4G to LTE!
      Let me know,

Ok… So I have an iPhone 5 on 7.0.2. I have tried changing all my info as noted on the site. When I back out of it it seems to b fine. But when I go to my internet it is saying,
. You are not subscribed to a internet provider. Do I need to call AT&T, what straight talk told me to have them unlock it. But I think it’s unlocked as I can make calls. I am on AT&T SIM card for net 10.. Thanks

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Tonya,
I’d like to help you. In my last reply I asked you a few questions.

I am not sure I understand this comment. I see you left another comment too. Are you asking for
You have an iPhone? Which model?
Do you have the Net10 AT&T or Net10 T-Mobile SIM?
Did you try installing the three APN profiles, from the Net10 web site as described here: How to Set up Net10 Web, Data, and MMS for Your iPhone Running iOS 7
Were you able to get data working with the tfdata, or one of the other two APN profiles?

I am not sure what you mean by “when I back out”. Are you doing the SIM swap? Have you tried installing each of the three APN profiles as described in the guide? Knowing the answer to this question will make it easier for me to help you.

If you paid the Early Termination Fee for your iPhone 5, they will unlock it for free. See: Unlocking your AT&T iPhone
If you bought the iPhone 5 from AT&T for full price you can unlock it using iTunes by doing a Restore.

      Let me know,
      Regards
      Bob

  48. David says:

I have previously used the sim swap method on two ios6 phones, but I had been unable to get MMS working with ios7 until today.

Another website recommended using the following for mms proxy:
    66.209.11.33:80

    It worked for me.

    My settings are:

    APN: tfdata
    MMS APN: tfdata
    MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
    MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33:80
    MMS Max Message Size: 1048576
    URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi David,
I am glad to hear you got your iPhones working. 66.209.11.33:80 and 66.209.11.32:80 are actually the numeric or ip addressed for mms3.tracfone.com:80 and mms2.tracfone.com:80. These ip addresses seem to work better for some people. Thanks for sharing what worked for you.

      Regards
      Bob

      • David says:

And honestly, it might be that the settings finally saved. It “looked” like the APNs were set, but strange things kept happening. The first time I tried it everything worked with my old settings until I rebooted. Then I went through hours of randomly trying different tactics.

  49. Katie says:

I am trying to do the sim swap. My original apn was the third one, tfdata. This means that after I remove the original apn that I downloaded, that the values I enter will be either of the two, correct? I tried the first one and it didn’t work. Thanks

    • Katie says:

Never mind. There is a slight typo in the last tfdata set up. It should be MMS Proxy: mms2.tracfone.com:80. This worked for me!

I just tested my phone and it worked after a few tries. It may be worth it to note that I couldn’t see cellular data settings when I first put the t-mobile sim in my iphone 4. It just takes time. Took about 20 minutes and then it showed up. I started to back up my iphone like you suggested and then noticed it suddenly appeared. I would advise people to restart their phones a few times and then wait 20 minutes. After the initial wait, it will show up right away every time you swap your sim.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Katie,
Yes. And if it doesn’t work you come back and we try some of the other possible solutions. Sometimes this requires a little effort to get it working. If you really want mms, we might have to try several more tweaks.

When you tried the sim swap did you data work?

      Regards
      Bob

  50. SHerie says:

I tried the sim swap once more but each time my data doesn’t work etc. The values keep repopulating while I change them and when they seem to stay I tap cellular but it doesn’t seem to ‘take’ Its not possible that my phone is locked to the att values is it?

    SHerie

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Sherie,
You need to be very careful when you do the sim swap. It is possible to get it working. Try adding all the mms values and then the data apn. Make sure you you still leave the cursor in the data apn before you tap cellular.
IF you are confident that you have entered the values correctly, after entering the values. Go turn on airplane mode for one minute, turn it off, and reboot the phone. Many people swear this would help the settings stick with iOS 6.
let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

  51. Cesar Acosta says:

    Good

  52. Miranda says:

Does my iphone 5 have to be unlocked for this to work?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hello Miranda,
Good question. I have never done it with a locked iPhone myself. My iPhone 5 was unlocked. Some readers report that it works on their locked iPhones. Some say you phone must be unlocked. Generally speaking, you will be able to get data to work if you have an AT&T locked iPhone if you use the Net10 AT&T SIM and that is the one you want. If you have a verizon iPhone 5, it the SIM slot is unlocked and should work too.

The debate seems to be over MMS. Some people say the SIM swap wont work. You will never get the cellular data network. Others claim, it works. The easiest thing to do is buy a T-Mobile SIM for a couple of bucks on eBay and try the SIM swap. If you get the Cellular Data Network option, you should be good to go. If not, your wasted $2 dollars.

Here is a comment from another reader.

I just want to add some extra information you should give out on the first page of your tutorial. Let people know that you CAN successfully do this procedure even with a LOCKED AT&T iPhone. However you must let them know that they have to put in the Tmobile sim and IMMEDIATELY click cellular data network, and then click the home button, then notes, before the phone recognizes that you put an unverified sim into the slot. Then you can disreguard the prompt that comes up, put your straight talk sim back in, and resume as your directions say. P.S. I did have to add MMS UA Prof URL for my locked AT&T iPhone 5 to work on IOS 7

Do you have an AT&T iPhone? Verizon? Sprint? Are you going to pay the Early Termination Fee?
      Regards
      Bob

    Hi Bob,

I have a iphone 4 on page plus now. I didn’t have to do anything fancy to set it up. Except I understand I can’t use higher than 4S on page plus right now. I was looking at another discount service for an iphone 5 … so I read your directions.

Your how to is great. I’m curious about the why. WHY is this so complicated? I didn’t have to do any of this with my current phone and I still have a cheap plan. What’s the deal with using an iphone on these other services that’s different than what I have now?

    Thanks,
    Barb

  54. Nicky says:

    Hi,

I have an iPhone on Straight Talk and have just updated to ios7.
I have repeated the APN settings- data works, and I can send MMS (to Verizon), but I cannot receive (even from other iPhones).

I have tried both variations of the TFDATA, neither have worked.

    Any other suggestions?

    Best,
    Nicky

  55. Danny says:

Hello Bob. I followed the instructions step by step, I did have a question because after I changed the settings and did the sim swap I still was not able to send an mms message. On this site, are we supposed to be downloading a particular profile? Since we were guided to take out the Net10 Profile at the beginning.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Danny,
When you install the profile only data will work. But by doing this, you will find out which Data APN works for you. If you want MMS you need to enter values in Cellular Data Network and you need to remove the profile. But at this point, you know whether you get data working and you know which APN works so you don’t have to try ALL the different values when you SIM swap. If your data did doesn’t work after the SIM swap, you mostly likely made a error. You have to be careful because your iPhone will keep changing the APN values back on you. It’s a real Pain in the …

If Data works, but not MMS you need to check the values or try the alternatives. What are you using for data?
      Regards
      Bob

  56. Katie says:

Never mind my last stupid comment! I am up on Net10! Now I’m going to follow your guide!

  57. Katie says:

I am reading your guide, great job btw. I just set up my new sim card and activated my net10 service through their wesite. I still don’t have cellular service on my phone (wireless works). Can I still follow this guide or do I have to wait for net10 service to work? Does anyone know how long this takes?

    Thanks
    Katie

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Katie,
Are you saying that you have cellular data & internet but not phone service? Did you port your number? I actually cant remember but I think my phone service was active immediately after I signed up. I think i remember too that the Net10 sign up process never actually told me what my phone number was. I had to look in the settings in my phone or call another phone. I didn’t port my number immediately, and that could take some time, but you should have a temporary number.

I wouldn’t wait too long to ask Net10 for help. You can call them, use their facebook page, or online support forum. LEt me nokw how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Katie says:

Bob it took about 20 minutes. I ported my number. I was just stressing. I just need to buy the t-mobile sim card and follow the next part. Am I correct in assuming that I need the same size sim but it will be a tmobile sim card? Can I just go to the tmobile store and get one? Thx

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Katie,
Yes you need to get one that is the correct size for you iphone. Some people buy one at the tmobile store for 10 to 20 dollars. A lot of people go to ebay and get one for 99 cents or a couple of bucks. It doesn’t need to be tmobile branded. Just for the tmobile network. If you bought the 3 pack of net10 sims you can cut the pink one to fit.

          Regards
          Bob

      • Katie says:

It’s a few hours later and I got one on Amazon for $5. I don’t know what I would have done if I had not found this site. I can’t imagine doing this with a Net10 cs rep.

I do have one more question. Why do you open notes in step 10? Everything else makes total sense but this step.

        Thanks Bob!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Katie,
That is a good question. This whole sim swap thing is a trick to get your iPhone to let you go into the Cellular Data Network settings so you can enter the values needed to make data and MMS work. There isn’t really anything special about the Notes app. You are really just making sure your settings are open in the background and another app is open in the foreground when you put your Net10 ATT SIM back in the iPhone. Your iPhone wants to close and hide that screen when it sees an ATT network SIM in your iPhone and this is all just away around this.

          Regards
          Bob

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I’m having trouble getting the Cellular Data Network menu to appear. I have an unlocked iPhone 4. When I insert a T-Mobile SIM, the network name shows up but no menu. I’ve tried resetting network settings, restarting the phone with the T-Mobile SIM in place, etc, but no luck. Is there anything else I can try to make this work? FWIW, I’m using Wal-Mart’s “Family Mobile” service which uses T-Mobile. According to its website APN settings should be available to me.
