ST-ios7

I wrote this guide to share with you how I set up Straight Talk Wireless data, internet, MMS picture messages, and group texts on my iPhone 5 with iOS 7 installed.

This guide explains how to enter the setup information needed to get data, internet, and MMS working. It shows you step-by-step how to enter your Cellular Data APN, MMS APN, MMSC, and MMS Proxy.

If you were searching for any these terms this guide is what you are looking for. Don’t worry about what any of these terms mean yet.
Straight Talk Wireless Cellular Data APN, MMS APN, MMS Proxy, MMSC, tfdata, wap.tracfone, att.mvno, mms3.tracfone.com, mms2.tracfone.com, http://mms-tf.net, http://mmsc.cingular.com, 66.209.11.33, 66.209.11.32 or 216.155.165.40

    Hello,
I’m having a difficult time getting my data back! I had the BYOP for an iPhone 4 working perfectly fine, then I sent my phone out to get the home button and lock button repaired. Upon getting my phone back my data is no longer working and I was curious as to if I need to repeat this process or what? I’ve tried all the different APN settings and none of them are seeming to work. My SIM card is in good condition and my iPhone is registering that it is inside and whatnot. I’m not sure what the problem is but any insight would be incredibly useful!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Lucas,
If you are using iOS 7 follow the instructions below. Otherwise tell me which verison you are using.
Look up your APN. Enter your phone number and Android 4.0 & 4.1 as you device type.

If your APN is tfdata then follow the steps below, if not let me know what is.
Remove any APN profile installed on your phone. See the guide if you don’t know how to so that.
      Reset your network settings.

Test your data and MMS. It should work. If not try Resetting All Settings

I followed all the steps and did the sim swap and I’m running iOS 7.1.2 and I cannot get mms to work have u found a way around this problem?

  3. Barbara Cooley says:

That is correct! I got away from the iphone because I was on the phone too much but on this new phone I did not get any data on it and sprint has too many dropped calls. I was thinking if I can still get data on my new phone and be able to use imessaging it would help a lot. How would I go about doing this

  4. Barbara Cooley says:

I had a iphone 4s with sprint and I switched to att prepaid talk and unlimited txt but I would like to be able to use my att without having to use my sprint phone for imessage. Is there anyway that I can keep my number and not have an iphone and use data with it for imessage. The reason why I switched is because sprint is just useless. They have good plans but have dropped calls so if there is anyway that I can use a prepaid phone and add the data on the phone for it also

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Barbara,
I don’t understand. You have a Sprint iPhone4s. You left sprint, and went to att prepaid. When you switched to att, you got a new phone.
Is this correct? Now what is it you want to do?
      Let me know.
      Regards
      Bob

I just switched over to straight talk and added the apn (iPhone 4s) via the link u gave. The data all seem to b working. But my FaceTime and iMessage isn’t acting quite right. In settings, it’s checked that I’m using my iCloud instead of my phone number. The phone number is grayed and can’t select it.
I can’t quite figure this out.
Ur help would b greatly appreciated. Tks :)

Hi i have straight talk at&t sim, and i get LTE speed blazing fast in my area 08003. However due to upgrade to 7.1.2 i lost an option in settings to enter my cellular data network settings so i can get my MMS back. It was working fine. I called ST customer service they said as long as your data working we are not promised that your MMS would work or not. How can i get my MMS work back again. Any info on this would work.

Stats: Iphone 5 at&t sim straight talk at&t MMS problem. My service is flawless without mms being there.

I have a Samsung galaxy s4 att using straight talk. If I wanted to switch to an iPhone 5 c could I use the same sim card I have in my android and just change the APN settings?

  11. Wesley says:

Hey, so I used your guide to get the MMS working on an iPhone 5 from t mobile. Used the wap.tracfone apn. The MMS works and the data works but it’s slow, only getting 3g. 6.5down and 1.4 up. Under the cellular menu it only says enable 3g. I should be in a 4g Lte area. It’s not even giving me the option to turn it on…

  12. Jess says:

Hi Bob! I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.1.2, I was previously with AT&T so I am using an AT&T Straight Talk SIM. I cancelled my service and paid the fees so the phone should be completely unlocked, they also said it was already unlocked. I can send pictures and iMessaging works, but I cannot receive non-iMessage pictures or group texts. I’ve been troubleshooting for three days now, called straight talk and AT&T, and I think in the process I turned off my data by resetting network settings so I had to install the wap.tracfone APN profile from straight talk and that’s working again. Unfortunately like you mentioned to Brittany, the SIM swapping and manual cellular data network input did not work, probably due to my iOS. I noticed during the swap that the AT&T SIM likes to switch the APN to tfdata even though that profile does not work for my phone, I did make sure to change it to wap.tracfone each attempt. What are my other options aside from trying to convince straight talk to switch my APN? I really do not want to sacrifice my MMS for this carrier but at the same time I do not want to cancel it because everything else is working fine. I also want to avoid crawling back to AT&T and then paying way more money to rejoin.

  13. Shay says:

I followed all the steps. Then I tried to see if my data would work without wifi and sure enough it didn’t.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Shay,
Let me know what phone you are using and your version of iOS. Also use the link in the guide to look up you apn settings and let me know what they are.
      Regards
      Bob

  14. Brittany says:

Thanks for the info! I will try calling then! Very helpful website!!!

  15. Brittany says:

Thank you for your response! I have an iPhone 4s with the att.mvno apn settings. Version7.1.1.
    Thank you!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Brittany,
You have two choices. Install the APN profile for the att.mvno from the Straight Talk website or change your APN from att.mvno to tfdata.

You can install the APN profile for att.mvno using the link in the guide. With the profile installed, your data will work but not MMS picture messages and group texts. It isn’t possible to set the MMS APN using the APN profile.

You can also change your APN from att.mvno to tfdata. With iOS 7.1 your iPhone will automatically set up the tfdata APN when you put your Straight Talk ATT sim in the phone. If your APN is tfdata, then great, you don’t need to set anything and it all works automatically. Mine does. But if you are using one of the other Straight Talk APNs like att.mvno, it doesn’t work. And you can’t use the SIM swap trick any more to enter the APN settings. That workaround stopped working with iOS 7.1.

If you want to change your APN you can call Straight Talk support and try to get them to change it or you can just replace your SIM. If you call Straight Talk, they might be able to change your APN from att.mvno to tfdata on their side. Tell them your iPhone doesn’t work, ask what your APN is, and ask them if it should be tfdata. they might update it for you, or you might be stuck on the phone for a while. The other option is to buy a new SIM and transfer your service to the new SIM. As part of the process, your APN will change from att.mvno to tfdata. The downside is you’ll have to buy the SIM. I think it’s $7 online.

You can always try calling them first. If they can’t fix it, order a SIM and do it yourself.

Let me know how it goes or if you have more questions.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Brittany says:

I tried calling straighttalk and they couldn’t help unfortunately. I’ll be purchasing a new sim, can that be the same AT&T sim they offer or does it need to be the tmobile? It’s only 6.99 so I figure it’s worth a try! Thanks!!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Brittany,
You want the Straight Talk ATT sim. Its unfortunate they couldn’t fix it. I think they do. Ironically, they randomly upgrade people from the att.mvno to tfdata apn without telling them. And if you have a service interruption, because you forget to refill your account, your apn can change when it is reactivated.
In the end, changing to a new SIM is less hassle than being on the phone with support. If your data is working, install the APN profile. You can at least have data while you wait for your SIM.

          Regards
          Bob

  17. Tristin Winningham says:

Randomly when I woke up this morning my internet quit working, it’s done this before and all I had to do before is turn it off then on. But that isnt helping in this case I guess. I did everything on this site and it still continues to not work. I’m not sure what is going on.

This worked like a charm!! I tried a few other sites with no avail. This site was super easy to follow. I’m a bitty techie but I think this would be easy for anyone.

Picture message works only one way on iPhone 4s. I can send a picture but I can’t receive a pic. I have Straight talk with tfdata. Everything else works great. It’s only on mms pics that I can’t receive.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Steve
If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.

You can also try resetting your network settings. Tap Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings. You’ll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords afterwards.

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards

    Hi!
Thank you so much I now have data!! Does the sim switch still work to get and send pic messages? I’m going to order a t mobile sim and just wanted to confirm that this still seems to be working. Thanks!!!!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Brittany,
The SIM swap does not seem to work with iOS 7.1 or later. It should still work with iOS 7.0.x or iOS 6. Let me know what phone and iOS version you are using and your Straight Talk APN settings. Use the link in my guide to look up your APN settings on the Straight Talk web site.

      Regards

    • Bob Thompson says:

If you are using iOS 7.1 or higher, the SIM swap doesn’t work any more. Are you using the Straight Talk aT&T SIM?
Di you buy a SIM and sign up as a BYOP customer, or move the SIM from another Straight Talk phone?

Remove any APN profiles you installed from the phone. (see the guide)
          Tap Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings.
you will need to reenter you wiFi passwords after
          test MMS afterwards

  26. Tenzin says:

First off, Wow thank you so much Bob Thompson for collecting all the information, researching and trying many possible solutions all to put together a very simple and clear instruction for everyone! Your “How to Guide” is very concise and very thorough!

I read through most the steps just fine accept I have an odd problem. I have a iPhone 5 Verizon (which came factory unlocked) and I just switched my service over to StraightTalk and I hadn’t gone through with their APN instructions, but I was getting MMS, Texts, Data (3g speeds of up to 8mbps!). I am totally happy with the 3g speeds of up to 8mbps but I thought I’d try to see if I can get 4gLTE as well! So I tried all 3 APN Installs and actually most of them slowed my data speed/ disconnected my data. Did I miss something? Did Apple maybe send an update to change the process? Just wondering if you could help me get 4G LTE.

Thank you again for great work on the how to guide!

Hey, so I have net 10 service. I did the bring your own phone and picked up a AT&T iPhone 4 s… Everything was great until the phone died. I bought a new iPhone 4 s from Walmart (straight talk and net 10 iPhone which it said on the box) I’m using the same sim card but I can’t get internet or mms and I can’t setup voicemail… When I call it it says something about AT&T voicemail. I had t-mobile 2 yrs ago and brought my number to net 10 but got an AT&T phone. I’ve tried all three apn settings but to no effect. Is there a straight talk SIM card I need to get since I now have a straight talk phone? I’m really lost and could use some help

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Daniel,
The Straight Talk iPhone 4s uses Straight Talk’s verizon network. You cant use your SIM in it. You’ll need to transfer your service to their verizon network or by a GSM model iPhone 4s.
Let me know if you need more help.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jacob,
Remove any of the profiles you installed.
Tap Settings->General->Reset->Reset All Settings and test data and mms

You’ll lose some settings with the reset but not your data.

    Hello
I have an iPhone 4, is this information (cellular data settings) the same for all iPhone 4?

Example: MMS Max Message Size is 1048576. Your MMS UA Prof URL is http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf.
Is the message size different for each iPhone or is this the standard size for all iPhone 4?

    Thank you

    Tracfone Sim Update:
I switched to a StraightTalk Tracfone SIM a month ago to avoid having to do the SIM swap. I thought everything was working. However, I recently discovered that MMS silently fails sometimes, both sending and receiving. Yesterday I sent a photo three times from the same location. It went through once and failed silently twice. I have also sometimes not received photos people have sent.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi EH,
I think you mean you switched from Straight Talk’s AT&T network-compatible SIM to Straight’s Talk T-Mobile network-compatible SIM. That’s ok, I am not sure which phone you have. I found with my iPhone 5s that my data speeds using Straight’s Talk T-Mobile network where much, much slower. I get 4G LTE with the AT&T network-compatible SIM.

Did you enter your APN settings into the Cellular Data Network settings on your iPhone? Are you sure the issue is with MMS picture messages and not iMessage.

      Regards
      Bob

      • EH says:

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. I have an iPhone 4s purchased from Apple unlocked. I am still on the AT&T network as T-Mobile coverage isn’t a viable option in my area. I previously had a SIM that used the att.mvno and bought a new one which uses the tracfone APN.

During my issue yesterday, I sent the picture once via iMessage, once via Text, and once via iMessage with some text included. The last one was received. I will look into the possibility that these problems are iMessage related, though.

I thought that if I had the tracfone APN, I wouldn’t have to do the SIM swap. I also thought that since it seemed to be working when I first got the SIM, it would continue to work. What I am finding is that it works most of the time, but not always — and when it doesn’t work, I have no way of knowing.

I was in another country a few weeks ago and used a different SIM. I first noticed this problem after that, but it’s possible it was happening before.

I am planning to hop to another carrier when my plan expires. I had to tweak my settings pretty regularly as a StraightTalk customer on Android. It’s too much of a hassle to do that on the iPhone– getting the phone in and out of the case takes me a good 15 minutes :)

I have an iphone 5 purchased from walmart that I’m currently using with straight talk. It’s a CDMA and works off of the Verizon towers. I’m running IOS 7.1.1. I haven’t been receiving notifications when someone leaves a voicemail since I got the phone. Straight talk had me to reset my phone completely. After doing that, not only do I still not receive notification of voicemail, my data and mms are not working. I have talked to multiple people at straight talk and apple. No one seems to be able to fix the data. I have researched and tried multiple techniques and still can’t seem to fix the issue. I’ve tried several different sim swap methods that I saw for older IOS but I can’t find any info for IOS 7.1.1. I’m 19 days outside my warranty with apple. Please help

  33. Richard says:

I have internet but it doesn’t say 4g or LTE

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Richard,
IF you are have an iPhone using ios 7 on Straight Talk you will never see a 4G indicator in the status bar. You’ll see a 3G indicator even if the phone has a 4G connection.

If you have the the right model iPhone 5, 5c, or 5s, are using the Straight Talk ATT SIM, and the ATT network has LTE in your area, then you should see an LTE indicator.

      Regards,
      Bob

      • Gina says:

What about a T Mobile locked iphone 5 with a just purchased Straight Talk T mobile SIM? It’s the ME486LL/A model which, if I understand correctly, should be capable of 4G/LTE speeds, and it does have the 3G indicator in the upper left of the screen. Ookla Speedtest is pretty unimpressive at between 8.5-9.9 download and .15-.40 upload. I question whether I’m really getting 4G. Is there a way I can tell? I’m also wondering if there are any APN settings I can use to get 4G if I am not already.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Gina,
The Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM should work in a T-Mobile locked iPhone 5. I tried it recently, but I did not get LTE. I tried the same Straight Talk T-Mobile in my Google Nexus 5 and I got amazing speeds using LTE. My guess is it has something to do with the Carrier bundle. The iPhone doesn’t realize that it can use LTE wit this SIM. Look in Settings General About. What is your profile?

Are you sure your phone is locked? Borrow an ATT sim from a friends phone. Did you ask T-Mobile you unlock it?

8 to 9 mbps down is pretty impressive if your phone is showing the 3G indicator, you are probably getting HSPA+ (which is sometimes called 4G or H, or H+)

          Let me know.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Gina says:

I used the Straight Talk apn settings (third option from page 6 of this article), which are the only settings I have found that could make data work at all. The network at the upper left of the screen reads HOME, which I believe is standard for a Straight Talk T Mobile SIM. I don’t know if this matters at all, but the carrier version is 16.1.

I’m not absolutely sure the phone is T Mobile locked, but I assume the party I bought it from would have advertised it as an unlocked phone if it were. If I discover one of my friends uses a phone with a nano ATT SIM, I’ll pop it in and see what happens. I have not asked T Mobile to unlock it, but perhaps that’s the route I’ll have to go to make this phone reach its full LTE potential.??

For now, at least, I guess I’m happy to know that I’m probably getting 4G, and it seems that the apps I use aren’t particularly sluggish. Out of curiosity, I’m going to try the Ookla test again when I’m someplace with better cell reception than the stucco house/faraday cage where I live, which might result in higher numbers.

By the way, thanks for this article. Without it, I might have been stuck with a very expensive camera phone, as I couldn’t even locate good APN settings through Straight Talk’s website.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Gina,
The seller may not have known if it was locked. They are supposed to be, but sometimes are not.
Pop in to an ATT store when they are not busy and tell them you are thinking of changing to Pay and Go when your current prepaid expires next month. Ask if you can try a SIM in your phone to make sure it is unlocked. Go when it is not busy though.

TMobile may not unlock it for you because you are not their customer. If you are at the mall also check out Metro PCS. T-Mobile owns them now, your phone would get LTE on their network too. You can then compare three options for LTE. ATT Pay and Go, Metro PCS, and Straight Talk with the ATT SIM (because if the phone was unlocked for ATT, the Straight Talk ATT sim will work). LEt me know how it goes.

            Regards
            Bob

Worked for me. Thanks! I had a lot of trouble with the instructions I found on other sites and Straight Talk’s customer service was useless. I transferred two iPhone 4s to Straight Talk at the same time and only one of them had this problem. Finally, we’ve got it working after finding your instructions and purchasing a TMobile sim from Amazon for less than $7.

I used the APN settings from Straight Talk’s website using my phone # and ios 6 & above.

Thank you for your step by step instructions. After 2 weeks of headache I gave up and signed up for T-mobile’s unlimited Internet/text/talk for $50 +fees. Problem is data is throttled at 1gb, which is ok for my spouse who uses it mainly with wifi. I tried everything here – the sim swap trick with all the apns and even downloading the profile into my iphone with the link provided by straightalk. I was only able to get the text and internet working with that, but no mms. So, just activated t-mobile’s sim and my wife’s iphone is able to everything it should, send/receive mms, text, and internet. I would also like to mention Straight talk has one of the worst customer service around – Hanging up on chats, giving you misinformation, blaming your phone. Apparently it’s not the phone. I guess you get what you pay for. On caveat is I will actually use straight talk for my android phone, and I use more data. Fingers crossed.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Sam,
Sorry to hear you were were not able to get it to work. How is the TMobile SIM working for your wife? What type of data speeds is she getting? T-Mobile has updated their network so in some areas of the country it works really well but in others your only get 2G data.

Oh, and were you using the Straight Talk ATT SIM with her iPhone or the ST tmobile one?

      • Sam says:

My wife is getting 3G/4G with T-mobile. So, where ever the person lives would have to look at the T-mobile coverage map. We tried Straight Talk with a Straight Talk AT&T sim card. She was getting 3G with ST. I’m just glad this whole issue is resolved.

Thanks, Bob. I’ll probably have to wait until next month to do this (rather than try to communicate this to my mother long distance). I’ll let you know how it goes.

    Hey Bob,
I’m finally back on track to help my mother get MMS.
To answer your question, she informed me her iphone version reads 6.1.3 (10B329; she was afraid to do the big version 7 update) and her carrier is listed as AT&T 14.2.
    Thanks for your help!

I have an iPhone 5 that I purchased in February 2013 brand new through Wal-Mart’s website with no SIM card. It is running iOS 7.1 and today it got a new battery due to it expanding and was causing my screen to come off. Since bringing it home though I have not been able to send or receive MMS messages.

I’ve done your step by step instructions, been on the phone with Apple, and nothing. I’m close to a factory reset if I can’t figure out another option. Please help!

    Thanks!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Kristy,
Your Straight Talk iPhone 5 uses Straight Talk’s verizon network. This guide only works for iPhones using Straight Talk’s att or tmobile network. supposedly your iPhone is programmed when you activate it, you have to dial *22890 or some other number.
See How do I activate my iPhone? on this page: http://iphone.straighttalk.com/

I suggest you tap to Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings
test your mms and if it doesn’t work, follow the activation sequence again.

I don’t know for certain this will work. It’s what I would do.
      Regards
      Bob

Hi, I came across your site and was GLAD since I am so confused as how to set up mine and my wife’s iphone 4s phones. They are both with AT&T and both unlocked. I purchased a sim from ebay but purchased a $45 straight talk unlimited data plan card for our service. I just realized that on the back of the service card it says “For Use With Straight Talk Phones Only” so I am guessing I am out the money and have to get a service plan that caters to iPhones? Also, I am following your guide but do we switch sims and access data card FIRST before switching our APN settings through your guide? Thanks for your time. I would also like to find out how long our phones will be “down” during this process as they are both used for our home business. Thanks.

  40. Kelly says:

Thanks,Bob. I’m amazed you can keep up with this volume of requests!
I’m trying to help my mother long distance w/ her switch to Straight Talk. So, there’s a bit of a delay in response on this end while I wait for her to return my calls.
The Carrier for iphone reads AT&T and her Version is 6.1.3(10B329).
She’s been holding off on doing the big update to Version 7.

The att.mvno profile works for me for data but when I delete that and do the sim swap and enter the fields it is not working. I made sure to make sure they were right before backing out of Cellular Data twice. I am wondering if it is changing right as I hit Cellular to back out of if I just need to try a different proxy. The settings look the same as what worked for me doing the sim swap before I had IOS 7 so I feel like I am doing something wrong.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Naomi,

If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.

Give it a couple of days and let me know how it goes.

    Hi Bob,
I just found out a friend that has T-Mobile is not receiving my text messages. I have an Apple iPhone 4. When I send the text it looks as if it went through & I do get all of her texts…very strange. Do you think this is a problem on her end? My APN settings is tfdata & I am running iOS 7.1 with no issues texting to other people. She seems to strongly believe it is a problem with Straight Talk.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Donna,
Are we talking about text messages or group text / picture messages. When you send her a message is it blue or green in your messages app?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Donna says:

Text message & it is blue

        • Bob Thompson says:

Is your friend using an iPhone? If the message is blue its using iMessage and not SMS

          • Donna says:

I will have to find out what kind of phone she has. In the meantime I should probably turn off iMessage then correct? I was under the assumption the iPhone would automatically convert messages to SMS if the recipient does not have an iPhone.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi,
You can try that or you can try creating a new message thread. Type in her phone number in the to field. Check your setting to make sure you have send as SMS enabled. See Settings->Messages.

  47. Larry says:

I have an iphone 4s with at&t sim card, i live in a small town in maine, but my internet doesn’t work unless in in a cities.. i’ve updated it and tried all the apn settings.. still doesn’t work where I live.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Larry,
Straight Talk doesn’t own their own cell network of towers. They lease time from ATT, TMobile, Verizon, and Sprint. If you are using a SIM, you can choose the their ATT ot TMobile network by picking that SIM.

The general rule I tell people is to pick the network that works well where you live, work, or use your phone most. So, you should ask around to see what other people are using where you live. Do they use ATT, TMobile, Verizon, or Sprint? Or do you have a local wireless company in your area. If ATT doesn’t have decent service where you live, the Straight Talk ATT sim isnt going to work well either. There are some cases where ATT has made an arrangement to provide coverage to their customers through a regional wireless company. In these cases ATT customers get data. Straight Talk customers don’t. That coverage isn’t part of ATT’s business arrangement with Straight Talk.

I have heard from many people from rural areas that have this problem.

So which companies work well where you live?
      Regards
      Bob

    • Eva says:

Hi, I am in Maine also and have used ATT Straight Talk for a few years. I don’t think that it’s your phone. The coverage in general is just not very good outside of urban areas. ATT coverage is better here than T-Mobile, but perhaps T-Mobile has a tower in your town.

PLEASE HELP!

  49. Stan says:

I have an iPhone 5 that I bought from straight talk last year that quit doing data after I did a complete reset. The only thing that has fixed it was when I switched in a SIM card from my new 5s. Is there anyway to buy just the new SIM card? It has the same part number as the new att nano sim with the exception of the last number.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Stan,
I am a little confused. If you bought an iphone 5 from straight talk it should be using straight talk’s Verizon network and not using a sim.
If you still have this phone activated, you should be able to redial the activation sequence and set up the phone.

Your iphone 5 will also work with a sim, but it will use the account associated with the sim.
Can you describe what you want to do?

      Regards
      Bob

  50. Chuck says:

I have a new iPhone 5s that I purchased unlocked from Apple that I’m using on straight talk. I can get the data working, but not mms. The tfdata data profile is the only one the data will work on. I tried the SIM card swap with both sets of settings for tfdata but neither resolve the issue. When I send a message containing a picture, it looks as if it sends it ok, but the recipient never gets it (in this case my wife’s iPhone with the same settings). Same thing when we try to send a photo from her phone to mine. I have verified iMessage has been disabled and mms and group messaging turned on. Also rebooted the phones after each setting change.

    Hope you can help!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Chuck,
      Try this:
Remove the APN profile, if installed.
      Tap Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings
Test data and both sending and receiving MMS. It’s best to test with a friend without an iPhone, but you can use that if that is the only option.

      Are you using 7.1?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Tom Rose says:

Bob, so you are saying if we have ‘TFW’, running ios 7.1, we do not need an APN profile (remove if one does) and just reset network settings and we should good to go? I installed the profile for tfn data last weekend. I was then able to get MMS picture texting but then lost it the next day.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Tom,
If you are using iOS 7.1, see TFW in your status bar, and your APN is tfdata your phone will automatically set the APN settings for tfdata. Your data and MMS should work without a APN profile or going into the Cellular Data Network settings to enter your APN settings. I have three phones in the house and they all just work this way. Many readers report the same.
The APN profile will only set up your data APN. It won’t set up MMS. For whatever reason, Apple does not let the APN profile set up MMS. Some people report this doesn’t work for them. If data doesn’t work I recommend trying the APN profile, if they need MMS I recommend doing the SIM swap and setting up the APN in Cellular Data Network. Sometimes anding the UA Prof URL and message size helps, sometimes people try different MMSC and MMS proxy values and that fixes the problem.

  51. Letty says:

I have an Iphone 5 from Verizon. I just switched to straight talk and I am using the T-mobile Sim card. Is that the correct SIM card I should be using? What should the APN settings be for my verizon phone? I can get 3g but no longer 4g or LTE. Any help would be appreciated.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Letty,
The Verizon iPhone 5 only supports LTE on the Verizon network. You won’t get LTE using ST’s att or tmobile network. I think Straight Talk’s att sim is a better choice for the iPhone. It gets a little complicated, but if your iPhone is using iOS 7.1, or iOS 7.0.x and carrier profile TFW 15.7 you won’t see a 4G indicator even with the ATT SIM.
You can read this article to understand more: I Updated My iPhone to Net10 & Straight Talk Carrier Update TFW 15.7 and Now My 4G Is Only 3G!

      • Letty says:

Thanks for your reply. But I tried the AT&T card and that one did not work. I couldn’t even make a call. The tmobile works better but Internet is slow and I can only use iMessage using my email address and only when on wifi. Other than that no text messages come through at all. What settings do I need to put for the apn?

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Letty,
It could be that there isn’t any AT&T coverage where you live. If that’s the case, you don’t want to use the Straight Talk ATT SIM. If other people are using ATT phones without issue in your area, it would be worthwhile to figure out the issue you have.

Your APN is most likely wap.tracfone. Look on page 10 or so in the guide for the link to the Straight Talk website. You can enter your phone number and it will tell you your settings.
          Regards

Hi, I followed the instructions as said.
I have an Iphone 4s from Straight talk, nothing before that.
Now I can get on the internet without being connected to wifi. I can send imessages, however when I try to send text messages it won’t work. It just happened 2 days ago. When the night before I sent a picture msg & it worked fine (to non-iphone users).
    My phone is with wap.tracfone.
    My current settings:

    Cellular Data:
    APN – wap.tracfone
    user & password are blank.

    MMS:
    APN – wap.tracfone
    user & password are blank.
    MMSC – http://mms.tracfone.com

MMS Max Message Size – 1048576
    MMS UA Prof Url- http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

However, before it stopped working I had MMS Max Message Size & MMS UA Prof Url blank & I was able to send mms to non iphone users. Now eitehr way I have it, blank or filled in, I cannot send MMS to noniphone users. I have a t-mobile sim card in it. I don’t see the need to do the sim swap due to the fact that I don’t have an ATT sim card & I have a tmobile sim card in my phone so I have the option to edit my Cellular. The sim swap is helpful to the ATT editing options not tmobile. I talked to Straight talk they told me I needed to look up information online on how to fix it?? Which I don’t understand why. They told me how to fill it out the first time & it worked. Now it doesn’t. I currently have IOS 7.1 & as I’ve stated before. Everything works EXCEPT for sending MMS to noniphone users. Please help me. I’ve been looking & trying for a solution for hours….
    Thank you in advance.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Ester,
Only people with the ATT SIM need to SIM swap, so they can get to the Cellular Data Network settings/

      Try
      APN: wap.tracfone
      MMS APN: wap.tracfone
      MMSC: http://mms.tracfone.com

You can try it with an without the MMS Max Message Size and MMS UA Prof Url

If GSM is AT&T then yes. I went to the Apple store bought an unlocked iPhone 5c. I used my old Straightalk SIM that my husband cut and everything worked. Then I updated to 7.1 and again my mms and data stopped. I literally just received my new nano SIM from Straighttalk. Pretty sure they just released them in march. It all works perfect now! Hope that answers your question and good luck! Hope a new SIM works for you as well.

  54. Crissy says:

I received my nano SIM from Straighttalk did the transfer and my cellular data and MMS is now working. So it is compatible with Apples 7.1 software update. If anyone is having issues. Get the new card. It was just released recently.

I just had mine delivered yesterday. Funny thing… when I called ST cust service they said the ‘Tracfone” sim wouldn’t work on ST. I popped it in this morning… I have LTE, text but no MMS. :/

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi TT,
This is not a good sign. Did you buy your iPhone 4 from Straight Talk? Or buy a SIM and put it in your phone? I think you are connecting to the cspire network because Straight Talk doesn’t have coverage in your area. When this happens you sometimes get voice but data soesn’r work.

what model is your iPhone 4.
      Regards
      Bob

  56. Roger W says:

Hi Bob. Well..I’m back again. For the first 9 months or so that we had this unlocked IPhone 4 (purchased from
apple) with a BYOP SIM from Straight Talk and the MMS never worked correctly. Then last fall, they changed something and the notation up in the left hand corner of the screen changed from “HOME” to “TFW” and all of a sudden everything worked using the tfdata profile. Everything was fine until a couple of days ago, and then the MMS started acting hinky again. Now, I have tried all three profiles, as well as a manual sim swap setup, and we can only receive photo texts, but when she sends one, it is never received. I suspect this may be related to the 7.1 IOS update that she installed. I just offer this info for the reference of you and your readers as I know of nothing that can be done at this point. I called Straight Talk support and they basically said they don’t support MMS on a “non-straight talk” IPhone. If you have any thoughts I would be happy to hear them. Thanks for all you do.
    Roger

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Roger,
Straight Talk released a carrier update, TFW 15.6 last year. If your Straight Talk account used the tfdata APN, your phone would automatically set itself up correctly. My phone has “just worked” since then. In the guide, there is a link to the Straight Talk website where you can look up your APN. around page 10 or so. Use it to check that your APN settings are: tfdata, mms3.tracfone.com,etc.

If they are, remove the APN profile from your phone. Go into settings general reset and tap reset network settings. Test MMS.
Let me know how it goes.

      Regards
      Bob

  60. Crissy says:

Hi. I recently purchased an unlocked iPhone 5c from the Apple store. I cut the SIM card because Straight Talk was not providing a Nano SIMs at the time. Everything was working great until I downloaded the iOS 7.1 software. Immediately after updating the software my cellular data and mms no longer worked outside of my wifi at home. I am still able to make phone calls and use text messaging but nothing else works outside of the wifi. I did live chat with Apple, they sent me to Straight Talk. Straight Talk blames it on the cut SIM even though everything worked before the update. So I ordered a Nano SIM that should be in anyday in hopes that maybe it will be compatible with the update from Apple. Am I missing a setting? Is anyone else having this issue and have a solution? Thank you in advance.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Janis,
Possibly. you won’t know unless you accept the update. you didn’t specify which update you are talking about. the iOS 7.1 update? Or a carrier update? Which is it?

i Bob Thompson, I think the problem is where i am living at :( I called straight talk last night and it looks like in my area they use verizon network. And since my phone uses sim card, i cannot use verizon’s network.
So when i travel and leave the town that I live, it should work just fine..Does that make any sense to you?
I couldnt really understand why i have full bars in my house and it still does not work.
THANK YOU for your help anyway :)

        • Bob Thompson says:

          mayara,
Which phone are you using and which SIM. Do you know if the people near you are able to use ATT or T-Mobile? What do you see in your status bar?
          Regards
          Bob

I did everything step by step and my data network is still not working. i have an iphone 4s with the IOS 7

    • Bob Thompson says:

      OK.
      Remove any APNM profiles installed
Go into Settings General Reset and Reset Network Settings
      test your data and MMS.
If it doesn’t all work. Go back in to the guide and find the link to lookup you APN settings on the Straight Talk web site.
I think its on page 10 or 11
let me now what they are

Hey so I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 6.1.3 untethered jailbreak AT&T compatible sim and I tried doing everything it’s just the internet still works slow and mms and group messaging doesn’t work.. I can change my APN without using the t-mobile sim cause my phone is jailbroken.. I see you have a lot of people replying to you.. Can you give me the exact APN settings I need for my specific phone with the iOS that I have and the type of sim I have.. I’m sure you came across someone with the exact same phone and situation I have.. I use to use the AT&T(mvno) but once my new reserve in straight talk kicked in the mvno completely stopped working.. If you need anymore info let me know thank you

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Serge,
Your new APN is probably tfdata. They switch them on people sometimes randomly and at the end of billing cycles. There is a list of APNs in this guide and there is a link to the straight talk web site where you can enter your phone number and it will tell you your APN settings. check it out, its near page 10 I think.

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

Excellent guide! I am having an issue, though… I am using an iPhone 4 running 7.0.4. I am switching to StraightTalk from AT&T. I followed all of the steps and do have cellular data working perfectly but my mms is only halfway there. I can send pictures successfully but I do not receive any. These are the settings I used:

    Cellular APN: tfdata
    Mms APN: tfdata
    Mmsc: http://mms-tf.net
    Mms proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
    Msg size: 1048576
    Mms URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

Any suggestions as to what I can do differently?

You mentioned you followed the guide. Did you look up your APN settings on the Straight Talk website? What were they?
Did you install an APN profile? How did you set up MMS? Did you SIM swap?

      Regards

i cant get it on straight talk website it keeps telling me to call the 1800 number. the att.mvno setting have always worked for my phone .i did the sim swap. i have used the guides to set up my phone,my husbands phone,my moms and my brothers phones. i familiar with the steps and like i said i had my phone set up with internet and mms but now when i enter this….
        APN: att.mvno
        MMS APN: att.mvno
        MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
        MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33:80
        MMS Max Message Size: 1048576
        MMS UA Prof URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

my internet and mms wont work i even tried the other ones and still no luck. if i download the att.mvno profile my internet will work but not when i do the sim swap method. so im clueless. let me know if there is something i missing and thank you for helping

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Amanda,
Based on what you told me you sound like a pro SIM swapper.
You know your APN is att.mvno. Try the SIM swap again. Make sure you remove the APN profile first.
When you SIM swap only change the first APN to att.mvno. Nothing else. Make sure the phone doesn’t change it back to tfdata before you save (by tapping cellular)
After you save, turn on airplane mode for one minute, then turn it off. Restart the phone and test data. See if the data APN works at that point.
          Let me know.
          Regards
          Bob

          • amanda says:

            still no luck :(

          • Bob Thompson says:

            but the profile still works..?

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hmm..
Are you able to try your SIM in a different iPhone and different SIM in your iPhone. It might help figure out where the problem is.
Also, I think if you transfer your service to a new ST ATT SIM, your APN will be reassigned to tfdata. If that is the case, you phone may just work with no profile and SIM swap. Mine does. The down side is if your MMS could stop working in one direction or the other with the new APN.

I’ll give this a more thought. Did you update to iOS 7.1?
            Regards
            Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Stacy,
This isn’t really enough information for me to try and help you. Which iPhone to you have? Which version of iOS do you have? Are you using the the Straight Talk AT&T network-compatible SIM, the Straight Talk T-Mobile network-compatible SIM?

Did you follow the instructions in this guide? Which parts?

      Let me know,
      Regards

  73. Karen says:

Thank you Bob for the time and effort with this tutorial. I am using BMOP ip4 previously with ATT. I inserted the Straight Talk sims, powered on the phone, and nothing. I went to unlockit.co.nz (wifi) and used the profile settings straight talk old still nothing. I used the ST new sim. Phone, data, text work perfectly. MMS however is not working but I rarely use it. I have att instead of home showing at the top of the screen. The 3G is on steroids. I will leave well enough alone for now. Thank you again.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Karen,
If you are using the APN profiles from unlockit they won’t set up your MMS only your data connection. If you use the link in the guide to find out what your APN is, and its tfdata. You may be able to remove the APN profile from unlockit, reset the network settings on your phone, and find that everything just works. You can always reinstall the profile again if it doesn’t.

I do understand that it’s working now, an respect the if it an broke, don’t fix it approach.

What color card is the AT&T mine are all mixed up. If I change SIM cards is it likely that I will have to go back through all the steps? Is it possible that some iPhones will never get mms?

    • Bob Thompson says:

Many packages have the wrong SIMs in the wrong slots in the package. I just opened a BYOP package this morning and saw it for myself too. There is a note on their web site about it.
You want to use the gray micro SIM. That is the AT&T one. Log into the Straight Talk web site, transfer your service from the old SM to the new SIM, it should be pretty quick. You won’t know if your MMS will work until you try. Some people have problems, many don’t.

  77. Eddie says:

I have an IPhone 5 through AT&T that has been unlocked and jail broken. I’m using the AT&T card from straight talk. When I first went to straight talk I came to this page and was able to set up the data and mms for my phone without a problem. Since paying my bill I no longer am able to get data or mms on the phone. I’ve tried to use these directions again but it’s not working. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Eddie,
Some Straight Talk customers report this problem around billing cycles, especially if they add a service plan after the 30 days. Use the link in the guide to make sure Straight Talk did not change your APN. If they did use the new APN. You can also try a hard reset on your phone. Press and hold the Home and Lock buttons until the phone restarts. You won’t lose any data. Otherwise you may need to contact Straight Talk.

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

  78. Meagan says:

I have done all the steps. Data works…. Really slow though. My mms still not working. I have unlocked iPhone 4S. Is there anything else to try. Was originally a AT&T phone but had it unlocked. Using a tmobile SIM card I think. Any help would be great! Thanks

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Megan,
If you are using the Straight Talk T-Mobile network compatible SIM, you should be able to go directly into the Cellular Data Network settings and set up MMS. Follow the instructions in the guide. You don’t need to “SIM Swap” because you are using the T-Mobile SIM.

If your data is really slow, I bet you see an E in your status bar when using your data connection. It means you have a slow 2G data connection.
The Straight Talk T-Mobile network compatible SIM is usually not the best choice for iPhone users. I recommend the Straight Talk AT&T network compatible SIM.

My data is now working but mms isn’t, is there any way to fix this without having to get a tmobile sim card?

  80. Katherine says:

Does the phone have to be unlocked? I have a new iphone 4s from ATT that has never been activated. I use it at home only on Wifi. It has the ATT micro sim inside. I logged onto straight talk last night to see if the phone is compatible and since I through the box away I don’t have the TF sim number. Is that something I get from the straight talk card?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Katerine,
You can use the Straight Talk AT&T network compatible SIM in a locked iPhone. Voice and SMS will work. You can install the APN profile as described in the guide to get data working. If the phone has iOS 7 installed data and MMS picture messaging might just work out of the box. If not you might need to follow the guide and SIM swap. All of my iPhone’s are unlocked, so I have never tried to SIM swap a locked iPhone. Some reader claim they are able to, other say it doesn’t work for them. Enough people have told me it works for them, so I will say some people are able to use a locked iPhone.

If the phone is off contract, e.g. you paid full price, I would try to get AT&T to unlock it.

I am a little confused. Which box did you throw away? the phone’s box or the Straight Talk BYOP package? The SIM’s Serial number is on the plastic card your SIM was attached to. You should also be able to read it off the front of the SIM itself.

      Regards
      Bob

  83. Austin says:

Currently I am in my county and it shows Viaero, because it is using Viaero Towers, the speed sometimes is slow, but it’s better than nothing when I was with ST. Tmobile does allow the use of other towers, while straight talk does not if it’s not a direct or “authorized” tower. When I go to bigger cities it shows Tmobile and I get 4G.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Austin,
You might want to ask TMobile if you are roaming. I read they have limits on roaming data. I read that while I was looking for the TMobile support article that I read about problems with data.

  84. Austin says:

I’m going to straight up tell you my experience with straight talk. I have an iPhone 5 factory that’s unlocked (was ATT Locked.) I bought the BYOP kit for straighttalk from Walmart. That was a terrible mistake. I had the kit for 5 months, unused. My verizon contract expired so I thought I’d give this a try. I tried the ATT SIM, had to cut it down, ruined the first one, then tried the second ATT included. It fit perfectly, but I couldn’t activate because ATT wasn’t available in my area, (no ATT Towers) so I called ST and went through 3 representatives and a manager. (All had to read a script and you could barely understand them.) So, I thought, what about the TMOBILE sim? Tried that, same case, (ruined the first TMobile sim, made the 2nd one fit perfectly, tried activating, but no luck. I tried using my area code, but there were no Tmobile towers available in my area either. Therefore they said I couldn’t use their services with the BYOP, (Bring your own phone) program. Could I was livid. Why do you sell the kits in that area at Walmart if they don’t even work down here?? So, I thought, my friend lives 15 miles away, and he uses tmobile directly, so I though….hmmm maybe I should use his zip code, and from his zip code, I could activate. On straight talks system, within a 60 mile radius, I couldn’t use straight talk. Yet I put in a zip code 15 miles away and I works, but I run into the DATA/MMS problem. I tried every APN setting, every tutorial, I literally talked to 7 MORE represents (on the phone) and they took me through the same steps. Nothing worked. I even emailed the US corporate office in Florida and they even kept telling me to call the ST BS anti American “””””””””Support”””””””” -sarcasm intended- line. Long story short, if you have an ATT SIM Card through straight talk, you have to have ATT coverage in that area. If you have an ATT SIM Card and don’t have ATT coverage, you can’t use the BYOP program features. In my instance. I had the TMOBILE SIM, was using straight talks service, but I only had Viaero and Verizon towers. The Viaero towers came up as NE Colorado Cell Service. Everything worked, except data and mms. Those features never worked because straight talk doesn’t have Viaero in their system, therefore the more advanced features such as data/mms aren’t supported. So today, I went to Tmobile, bought a SIM card (nano for my iPhone 5 64gb, gsm factory unlocked) and the $60 prepaid plan. Total was $72. The closest tmobile store is 60 miles away, as I was up there, I had 4G LTE which was really fast, when I came home, I had 3G, as it reads on my status bar. Just like it did when I had straight talk. But this time, using Those same towers, my data worked. It wasn’t my phone or my sim. It was straight talk and their terrible system/setup and their compatibility. I bought an iPhone 4S those 5 months ago so I could use straight talk. I verified it would work with the BYOP program and representatives, but then they said no, it wouldn’t work and the representative blamed their system. Their own employee. Save yourselves time and money, and widen your research and look for more dependable carriers and someone who knows what they’re talking about.

POSTED FROM MY !!WORKING!! iPhone 5 on Tmobile on the same towers (non tmobile) that straight talk wouldn’t work on.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Austin,
Thanks for talking the time to come back and leave such a detailed update.

You certainly have been to h**l and back with straight talk. I am glad to hear you are getting 3G service at home now. I am curious if your phone shows you connected to TMobile or Viaero? If so, it seems that tmobile prepaid is getting reciprocal coverage on other networks.

I hope you are finally getting to enjoy your iphone 5.
      Regards
      Bob

  85. Don says:

i tried all the apns in the guide and two didn’t work at all, the other one said “PDP authentification failure”, how should I proceed? I am using an unlocked iPhone 5 with an att sim card

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi don,
I have heard this this problem before. Are you sure you are using the straight talk att SIM card? What color was the plastic card the sim was attached to? What network is displayed in your status bar? HOME, TFW, or something else.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Don says:

Hi bob, the SIM card was on a pink card in the BYOP package. As forthe status bar, it switched between saying HOME or AT&T. Since then I have called straight talk and they said they were updating the profile I needed or something and to try again in an hour, hopefully it works. Thanks for your help!

        • Don says:

Update: The data did not work an hour later, so I called again, the customer service rep told me to go to my email and then said “Goodbye” and hung up. Getting kinda frustrated with all this.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi don,
The pink card is a straight talk tmobile sim. The card may have been in the wrong slot in the package. I had another reader who had the problem and there is even a note about the issue on the straight talk website.
Log into the straight talk website and transfer your service from the pink sim to one of the blue or gray sims, they are the att sims.
Your problem is that the tmobile network in your area doesn’t have good coverage and your phone is connecting to the att network under a reciprocal coverage agreement. Unfortunately TMobile doesn’t support data under this agreement for prepaid wireless companies like straight talk using their network.

Use the att sim. Give it a try.
            Regards
            Bob

  88. Shana says:

To anyone interested not sure if the question has been answered already but I just bought a iphone 5s unlocked and off contract from verizon to use on straight talk. I took my micro sim out of my lumia 900 that I was previously using on straight talk and just cut it down to size of nano.I went to unlockit.co.nz and used the profile settings straight talk new sim everything was working fine phone, data, and text.MMS however was not so I chose the profile of straight talk OLD SIM and now my mms works also, so if that helps anyone be sure if your straight talk sim is old or new. only thing now is I havent been able to get 4g like i did with my att lumia does anyone know if its because i have a verizon iphone?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi,
Thanks for the comment. You won’t get LTE. You’ll get 4G. Because, you have an Verizon iPhone 5 is only compatible with Verizon lte. Unlockit doesn’t fix mms. Your mms would have worked without it.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Shana says:

Hi thanks Bob you are very informative. I figured that out that the mms was working anyway. I understand a verizon iphone 5s will only get verizon lte, however you stated I would be able get 4g, ive only been getting 3g is there a way to fix that I cant find the answer in the guides. I know its available in my area because I checked verizons coverage. I have a straight talk sim in a 5s unlocked from verizon. Also should I uncheck enable lte?

        • Shana says:

Actually nevermind I followed the guide on changing carrier settings from tfw 10.7 to 10.6 and I did the reset and my phone now says tfw 4g. Im now running some speed test not a huge difference but at least I now know what to do.I keep getting the pop ups on my phone and computer asking me to update carrier settings, hopefully when my son is playing games he wont press ok.Thanks bob this site is a true help.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Shana,
I am glad to see you found the article and were able to install the profile. The downside if that once you go back to 15.6 the phone will prompt you that an update is available. The phone will prompt occasionally, and every time you plug it into a computer and iTunes launches.

I have an At&t iPhone 5c with an AT&T Straight Talk sim. I followed the guide using the T-mobile (Straight Talk) sim swap and with great success, found the correct APN and other settings, which got my data and MMS working perfectly. It has been about 3 weeks and I have just noticed that my MMS stopped working. My data is working fine however. Do I have to do the sim swap again to get MMS working again? This will be troublesome if it happens every few weeks. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

    Thanks!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Kim,
That is hard to say. For some readers, they sim swap and it just keeps working. A smaller number of people report having to sim swap weekly or monthly. I never had that problem. I’m in the group of people that don’t need to sim swap at all.
Before sim swapping again, try going into settings, general, reset and tapping reset all settings. Test your data and mms. If it doesn’t work, you’ll need to sim swap again. Keep track of when you sim swapped and see how long it is before you need to do it again. That’s the only way you are going to find out if this is going to be replete problem.

      Btw,
What APN settings did you use? Depending on your settings, there might be another option.
      Regards
      Bob

      Regards
      Bob

      • Kim says:

Thanks, Bob, I will try the reset soon. The APN settings that worked for me was the wap.tracfone APN along with the mms setting that included the “Cingular” setting, rather than tracfone or AT&T setting. I will try your tips soon and see what works. Also, those settings (APN and MMS) were the only ones that worked for me; I had tried all of them to be sure.

        Thanks!! :)

Thanks a lot Bob I know have my Verizon iPhone 5 on straight talk. There were a lot of people out there that said it wouldn’t work, so after bobs advice I went and bought the activation kit from hell mart, and it works my data wouldn’t work and I tried one of bobs APN settings and it wouldn’t work so I found this one

    http://unlockit.co.nz/
Go to create new APN, find S.T.
    And down load.
    It worked instantly.
Now I have a average 4g speed of
    9.5 MBs
Which is a lot better then my old 4s Verizon Internet ever was. Also I live way out in the country with the Amish. And most cell phones don’t even work at. Also I’m still on iOS 6. But thanks for all your time and advice. Can we follow u on face book

  93. Austin says:

I have tried all APN Settings and nothing works. I have an iPhone 5, was originally AT&T but it’s now unlocked. I bought the BYOP Sim activation kit for straight talk and I don’t have AT&T Coverage in my Area, but I do have T-Mobile coverage THROUGH Viaero Wireless. so I will repeat, there are no actual Tmobile towers here, only Viaero towers, and my service on my iPhone reads “Cell One of NE Colorado.” All texting and calling works on the iPhone but DATA AND MMS Does not. I’ve spent over 10 hours on the phone with straight talk, and nothing has been resolved. I’ve emailed them, chatted with them on the internet, and they all want me to route me to calling the support number agaian(which I’ve talked to over 5 representatives on that number and none helped) and I refuse to do so because they only tell me the details of the APN’s that are on the internet. Plus you can barely understand them. The name under “carrier” in the about settings in the iPhone is “Carrier 15.5″ but my provider/service name is Cell One of NE Colorado, and my service is STRAIGHT TALK, (T-Mobile SIM). I’ve rebooted the iPhone after every APN update and also turned the wifi off before rebooting. I’ve followed all instructions, none have worked. If anyone has the fix, please reply, I will return the favor if you have a fix. Please help, I hate paying for something I can’t even use. Thank you.

      Hi Austin,
Unfortunately, this is bad news. I don’t think you are going to get your data working. I’ve seen this type of situation before. Your area don’t have T-Mobile service. T-Mobile has a reciprocal coverage agreement with Viaero Wireless. Your phone on the Straight Talk T-mobile network is connecting to Viaero. Your voice service and SMS may work, but your data isn’t going to work.

I had some readers with a similar situation and I did a little research and found that T-Mobile doesn’t support data for prepaid wireless accounts when connecting to a reciprocal coverage network. So if you had a regular T-Mobile account, your data would work. If you have a T-Mobile prepaid account, your data would work. My bet is that your Straight Talk T-Mobile account is treated the same as a t-mobile prepaid account. Every person I met with this problem was using the T-Mobile SIM. I wonder if you would connect to Viaero with the Straight Talk AT&T SIM?

I wish I had better news for you. You can try calling the Executive Resolution Department at 800-876-5753. Readers have told me they have got better customer service from that department. I don’t think they can fix the problem though. I’d love to be proven wrong. If your cell number is new, and you can live without it, ask for a refund if they can fix it. The problem isn’t the APN, its their network.

What wireless companies have coverage where you live? You mentioned that AT&T doesn’t. We now know T-Mobile doesn’t. What about Verizon or Sprint? Maybe we can get you on to the Straight Talk Verizon or Straight Talk sprint network. Or another prepaid wireless company that uses those networks.

BTW… could I get a screenshot of your Settings-General->About page? Press and hold the lock an home button at the same time and release. The screenshot will be in photos.

      Regards
      Bob

.can this work with lock at&t iphone 5 c

    • Bob Thompson says:

Yes. Many people use AT&T locked iPhones with Straight Talk. Some people report having problems with the SIM Swap, some say it worked for them. Read the second part of the guide to understand the SIM swap.

If you paid the Early Termination Fee with AT&T to get out of the contract, they will unlock the phone for free.

      Regards
      Bob

I have an Iphone5 running IOS7. I believe the phone was originally threw T-Mobile but now im using it on straight talk . I have read threw the guide and have done every step, I have even downloaded all 3 apn profiles and my data still does not work.

  96. rodney says:

Worked great. Data, MMS messaging works. just got off a over hundred dollar a month AT&T plan. If Straight Talk can exist on 45 bucks a month it would seem that the mothership doth charge too much WINK

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Rodney.
Glad it worked. You set it up yourself and are reaping the benefits. The big four have to pay for all those retail locations. Think of all those mall stores..

  97. Angi says:

Hi there, I was having trouble getting any text messages thru on straight talk. Here’s something I found that might help. My phone number was entered as +1-555-555-5555 (not my number of course) Go to settings: phone: my number: I typed my number without the plus sign and magically my texting worked. Not sure if this happened to anyone else but it’s something to check. I just switched my second phone to straight talk with this guide and it worked as soon as I figured out to remove the plus sign in front of my number. So thanks again for all your hard work!

  100. R. A. Tirado, Jr. says:

I have an iPhone 4 with the iOS 7.0.4 update, using Straight Talk sim card. For several weeks I only had talk, but was only able to access data and txt msgs when connected to the house wifi. Besides trying the option that came in the Straight Talk package, I’d looked at a lot of videos on youtube and none were able to get to resolved the issues and they assumed too much knowledge on my end. But, your guide worked perfectly for me, as you were very thorough, yet simple enough to follow–you got it to work. The “tfdata” apn settings I got from your page got my data plan running and now I am able to connect to the Internet even without wifi running. Also, I finally understood why I wasn’t getting the Celullar Data Network option under Settings–General, and by doing the sim card swap I was able to get MMS and Group MMS running so I can now send and receive photos this way, with or without wifi connection.
Additional Observations: (1) When I did the sim card swap somehow the correct numbers automatically showed up in the various fields, so that worked out even better than expected. (2) In reviewing your guide there is some duplication and redundancy throughout, especially in first two pages. Overall: You were a God-sent. Thank you so very much.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi R.A.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I am glad to hear that my guide helped you get your phone working. You are correct to point out that after sim swappinf some of the values are correct. A recent update from Apple and Straight Talk has improved the situation and the iphone is closer to setting itself up correctly on its own.

I’ll take a look at the guide for the redundancy. There are some points I repeat many times because I continually get questions about them.
      Regards

I am using an Iphone4 unlocked for AT&T with Straighttalk. I finally had the phone working right and I changed the phone number (new sim card). Now I can do everything except receive picture texts from non iphone users. I tried to follow the guide but when I get to step 10 and I put in the T-Mobile sim nothing shows up in the Cellular data window. Everything is blank. I can type in data, but I don’t know what to type. If I try to skip the step and put the AT&T sim back in, the cellular data network tab goes away. Please advise.

I been trying for hours to switch to straight talk for my At&t phone, buts it’s not working. I’ve done everything ask for me to do, and it keep saying no service. Can someone help please????

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Nyeisha,
This guide won’t help you if your phone shows “No Service”. If your phone shows no service your SIM isn’t active. Try restarting your phone. If your phone doesn’t show HOME or TFW and you still can’t make phone calls youer SIM may have not activated. If you created an online straight talk account you can log in and see if your new SIM is active.

      Regards
      Bob

  106. Verizon Iphone User says:

Wonderful guide. I was a Verizon customer with an Iphone 5 (Not C or S).
I purchased a ST ATT micro sim and cut it down to nano size with wire cutters. I purchased a Tmobile nano sim from amazon to do the swap for MMS. I followed the steps above and data works at 4g (very close to my LTE speeds).

    WOohhhoooo $45 a month!! Thanks!

  107. Andrew says:

I have an iphone 4 and am currently running ios7. today I realized the I could only make calls and send messages but not receive calls or text messages. I heard elsewhere the I need to install the straighttalk profile so I used one from unlockitz.com but once I installed the straighttalk profile, my phone started saying “no service.” I have tried resetting the network settings, backing everything up to iCloud and restoring the entire phone and a whole bunch of other stuff but nothing seems to be working. I just tried going through everything that you say to do here but to no avail. Can you help me?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Andrew,
If you can’t receive phone calls or send text messages you may need to call Straight Talk. If you ported your phone number the port may have not been completed. If you have your old phone or SIM card, see if the phone is still active. Your old phone should be active until the number port is completed. After the port, your old account is closed. You can also call another phone that has caller id with your Straight Talk phone. If it shows a different number, you still have a temporary number.

You did not mention which phone you have and which Straight talk network your are using. what is the model number of your phone and are you using Straight talk’s ATT or T-Mobile network.

      Regards
      Bob

unlockit, can only fix your data and internet. My guide will only fix data, internet, and MMS.

  108. Jazz says:

What am I doing wrong? I have a ATT Iphone 4 with IOS 7. I have done everything your guide says and nothing seems to be working. I’ve tried all three of the APN settings and its just not working. Does my number being transferred have anything to do with it, do I have to wait for that to go through? I feel so technologically illiterate after all this.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jazz,
Relax. Usually your voice service starts working pretty quickly but it takes a while for your number to port. Is your voice service on Straight talk working yet? Once your voice service is working you can try to setup everything else. Is your old phone or SIM still active? As soon as your number is ported, your old SIM will go inactive.

Lwt me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

          Bob

          • Missie says:

The iphone 5c is the blue one. As far as the sim card I am not sure as I bought it on ebay and it came with the phone, it came on a blue card, it does not say if it is att or tmobile.

          • Missie says:

            The phone is an att

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi missie,
Sounds like the att sim. Look on the back of the phone. Does it say a1532?

            Turn off wifi.
Try to load any web page in safari
Look in the status bar. Do you see TFW or home. How many signal bars do you have. Do you see a 3G, 4g, lte?
            Regards
            Bob

          • Missie says:

It does say a 1532 on back, when I turn off wifi it says ATT LTE

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Missie.
            Hmm.
Go to Settings General About. Do not install any carrier updates if your phone asks.

What is your version and carrier (Carrier 15.5, TFW 15.6, it looks like that)

            Regards

Hello. I am confused about a few things and need assistance. I am currently with T-Mobile, but recently purchased a locked AT&T IPhone 4S because i am switching to straight talk, which is also AT&T. If I purchase a straight talk micro SIM card can my iPhone be activated onto straight talk?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi,
Yes. You can use an att locked iphone with straight talk’s att network. It would work with the st tmobile network. Getting voice, data, and SMS working is pretty straight forward. Some readers report they can’t get mms working on a locked phone using the sim swap method. Other readers report they are able to get it working on a locked phone. Read the guide if you want to understand the sim swap.

Let me know if you need more help

    • kristen scarfuto says:

yes I have a locked at&t iPhone 4 running ios7 now. you would just purchase the micro sim call and get it activate it and insert it into the phone

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Kristen,
Yes. If this was your iphone 4 and you completed your contact you should have att unlock it for you. You can use the phone with straight talk even if it’s locked but it’s better if it’s unlocked. Some readers report problems getting mms working with locked phones, other say it worked for them.

You can activate your phone using straight talk’s website. If you are using ios 7 your data and mms might just work. Otherwise you can’t follow this guide.

        Regards
        Bob

My new iPhone 5s is finally working on Straight Talk, picture messages and all! Thank you so much for your thorough guidance. About a year and a half ago I finally made the break from Verizon after over 10 years. I have had 5 or 6 phones trying to find one I like that I can get to work on Straight Talk. I have spent countless hours looking online to figure out how to change the phone settings to work on Straight Talk. Finally splurged on this new unlocked iPhone5s. But I was going to return it if I couldn’t get everything working. What worked for me was the att.mvno settings without adding the url. (funny that different settings work for different people) I also used your guide to downgrade from 15.7 to 15.6 in order to get 4g and it made a significant difference in internet speed. Thank you.

  120. Wasabi G says:

It worked! Thanks!!! Thank you so much for all the work you put into this very helpful guide!!!

I have an iPhone 5 originally from AT&T. I used your guide to set up MMS picture and text messaging. The tfdata settings – the last group of settings – worked for me.

    Two comments:
    1. You comment that while entering Cellular Data Settings, the iPhone will keep wiping out your entries. This only happens when you scroll down the screen, and the top two fields disappear off the top of the page. So, I just start entering from the bottom and go up. This works every time – the bottom settings will not get messed up once they disappear while scrolling, it’s only the top two fields that do.
    2. This is just minor but what they hey… It would make for easier navigation (especially while accessing your page from a smart phone) if you had the “previous page” and “next page” links in more places on the page, like at the top of the page, for instance.
Thanks again for an awesome guide! You rock.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Wasabi G,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. You are correct that there are some little tricks to keeping the phone from changing the APN on you. The scrolling is one trick, the other that works really well is to leave the cursor in the APN field before scrolling down the page. It seems the value won’t change until you are done editing. The pagination of the guides is a challenge. People read the site on mobile phones, desktops, and tablets. Fixing that has been on the to do list for a while. So maybe some day.

Anyway, glad the guide helped. Nice to hear from people when it just worked!
      Regards

Hi I have an iPhone 5 that was with Verizon and I have a AT&T sim for straight talk, I had to cut it down into a micro sim and when I put it in it says no service, so I don’t know if it’s just not reading the sim or if something else is wrong

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Dennis,
I am assuming you activated the SIM online already. If you had an ATT/GSM iPhone and it didn’t recognize the SIM it would say “No SIM” ot Invalid SIM. With the Verizon iPhone 5, I am not sure.
      Try:
a hard reset (hold home and lock buttons)
      Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings
      Settings->General->Reset->Reset All Settings

I found that when I cut my SIM, I had to take sandpaper or a nailboard to the top because the nano SIM is a little thinner than the SOM or micro SIM.

Check Settings to to see if you have a Carrier Option. If so and its set to Automatic, change it to manual. What Networks does the phone see.
      Regards
      Bob

    Hi Bob:

I already had a Straight Talk T-Mobile network compatible SIM card in my i-phone 5c butwas unable to send any pictures. I spend literary hours with Straight Talk tech support with transfers from one technician to another. Finally all the blame came on the “BYOP” – meaning they are not responsible for any issues with Your Own Phone. Suggestion was go to your phone manufacturer or online. And yes, online, that is where I went and found your “to set up MMS Picture Messaging” section which gave very clear step-by step process with exact photos of what you see on the i-phone screen. SO VERY HELPFUL!!
In short, just following your guide in one hour am enjoying my phone and sending photos and vedios. Thank you Bob!!!!

  140. Bernie says:

Thanks so much for the guide! It worked! Just to let you know about the TFW 3G issue. I also got updated to the TFW 15.7 and the 3G appeared. I hadn’t done a speedtest before but with the new TFW I get download 5Mbps and upload 0.75 with ping 323ms which seems reasonable considering the att coverage map only shows good to moderate coverage in my area. One question though: I tested MMS and it works. Do I switch imessage back on after I did the test? Thanks

Hey, if I buy a t-mobile sim card that is not yet activated will I still be able to access the network settings so i can set up the MMS? If so I can go buy one tomorrow but I just don’t want to waste money if it wont work.

Hello, it just worked perfectly well for me ! with iapnupdate.straightalk.com on a factory unlocked Iphone5
Thanks a lot ! I called Straighttalk but they just got me confused your guide was quick and easy.

    Thanks :)

  143. Joe says:

    Hey Bob,
I followed your guide and tried all three APN profiles, nothing is working for me though.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Joe,
Remove any installed profiles. Tap Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings.
      Test data in the browser
      if it works test MMS
If data doesn’t work, try re-installing the profiles. Start with tfdata
If it doesn’t work …what type of phone do you have? ios Version? Are you using the Straight Talk AT&T or T-Mobile Network SIM?

      Regards
      Bob

      • Steven King says:

Bob I have a question, I bought an iphone 5 from off eBay and installed my straight talk sim and set it up. After a lil while when trying to make a call it said the device was network blocked. I called AT&T and the phone is clear as far as the imei and no contract so how do I get it working? Will the original owner have to call and have the phone unlocked? That’s what I’m thinking, I currently have an iphone 4 and didn’t have this issue, I just put in my SIM card and with the help of this site set it up but with the 5 I’m stuck as of right now.. Any suggestions???

        Steven

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Steven ,
I am not sure. I never heard that before. Can you try your ST sim in a different phone, or a different sim in your new iPhone to see if it works. Sounds like a straight talk issue. You might want to check with them. You could power cycle your phone or try some resets.

I have heard of problems where people buy used phones that where reported stolen and get banned from the network but. That is was with Verizon and Sprint.

Is your ST sim a tmobile or att sim?
          Regards
          Bob

  144. Irritated and Confused says:

    Hey Bob,
I just set up my iPhone 5 with straight talk the other day. I had 4G just fine when the network said ‘HOME’ the next day (yesterday), I opened safari and a message popped up saying I need to update my APN settings. So I did. Now it is TFW, and along with that download I no longer have 4G. There is an option to turn on LTE and it is currently on. But when I use any internet it is now slowed drastically and when I make a call it says 3G instead of 4G/LTE. It never did before. Annnnddddd I can no longer FaceTime because of the 3G. My question is simply WHY?!?! And how do I fix it!
And I am using the unlockit.co APN

  145. Sam says:

It says not verified what does that mean???

  146. Ryan says:

Hi Bob, good guide. Does the phone need to be unlocked to do the card swap? I am guessing so, as I have a locked iPhone 4 on 7.0.4, and the cellular network settings won’t show up using an Ultra Mobile (t-mobile network) sim card.

  147. Inquiring Mind says:

    Hi Bob,

Just wondering since I would need a T-Mobile SIM card to help the set up process. Would it be better if it was from T-Mobile themselves or would the Straight Talk T-Mobile Compatible Micro SIM Card work?

  148. RJ says:

Does the T Mobile SIM need to be active?

  149. Crystal says:

  151. Greg says:

I set up our 2 new iphones 4s running ios 7. I was worried when I started that I would not be able to do it, but your instructions along with the pictures made it very easy. Only question is when I am finished, do I leave imessage mms messaging and group messaging all on for normal use?

  152. Jenny says:

    You are awesome! Thank you!

  153. Kayla says:

Every time in install an apn it says it’s unverified.. What am I doing wrong?

i dont understand why i have to add the apn settings then in the next step remove it? and my mms still doesnt work, even after i installed then uninstalled the apn. i have an iphone 4 ios 7 with ST

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Erica,
It’s a long guide. Could you be a little more specific? Are you talking about installing the APN profile or filling in the cellular data network settings?
      Regards
      Bob

  155. BRYAN says:

Used apn changer from unlockit.co.nz and set it to att mvno works with my iPhone 4S no need to use tmobile sim trick

  156. Kelvin blue says:

Phone won’t send or receive mms on my iPhone 4

  157. Milo says:

    Hi Bob,
As many of ST users I had an issue with receiving ( none iPhone) MMS, up until yesterday.
I reset all the network settings first. With WiFi turned on I downloaded the ST profile at ( http://iapnupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com)
Once it was installed I tested mms ( had few of my non-iPhone friends) send me a mms and IT WORKED…. hope it helps somebody

    Thanks

  158. Connie vandenbergh says:

My iphone5 which has IOS 7 doesn’t have the MMS messaging button anywhere. I am not able to send some picture messages to some contacts as a result if that. I also don’t get group texts and it’s getting really annoying.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Connie
You use the messages app to send mms. You need to set up mms and group texts to get it to work.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Sheri says:

None of your settings worked. I called Straight Talk and they had me use Straight Talk as the apn. For mms apn I used tfdata and MMSC with :80 just as your settings recommended. I now have cellular data and can send MMS, but not receive. Unsure how to proceed, but afraid to experiment and end up without cellular data/internet again! If you have any advice for a year old ATT Straight Talk sim in a iPhone 4S I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks for all you have done to help the many iPhone users in need!

      • erica says:

u need mms app to send pics & group texts? where do i get this and which do u recommend

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Erica,
I don’t understand your question. On the iphone you use the Messages app to send and receive mms picture messages and group texts. You need to follow the guide to set up data and mms so it will work.
          Regards
          Bob

  159. Katy says:

Hi, Your guide was most helpful! Thanks so much for putting that out! I was rather sad when I had no data. I thought maybe straight talk had taken it away for some reason. But I found this through google and it was awesome!!

  160. Kamie says:

Thank you so much Bob! I have been searching for answers for a couple months now on how to get my data working and today I came across your website. I simply changed to one of the APN’s you suggested and it worked! I’m so happy! Merry Christmas to me!!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Kamie,
Great news. Peace on earth and good will to all Straight Talk customers.

    • Mike says:

Hi Bob, Just wanted to thank you for all the help you have on this site! Its great info…..Just wanted to let you and everyone know that I have set up a few iphones on ST and they all worked great because of the directions on here. My latest set up was an iphone 4 ATT with ios7.0.4 NOT unlocked. I put the Sim in it and it worked immediately….I did not have to edit any settings or install any APN profiles to get the internet or MMS working on it at ALL! I was using the same phone about 3 mos ago, with ios6.0.1 on it and had to jailbreak/unlock it and edit settings to get it working but with the new ios i didn’t have to do anything. Visual voice mail still didn’t work but that really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t know if everyones experience will be the same but thats my .02 cents. Thanks Again!
      MIke

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Mike,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. You are correct, if your phone shows the TFW as the network it may just work. With the carrier update TFW 15.6 and later, your iPhone will program the straight talk APN instead of the att APN. It doesn’t work for everyone though.

So are you helping your friends move to Straight Talk?

        Regards
        Bob

        • Mike says:

Just actually started with the friends, haha. Long story short, I started with the AT&T 4 that I bought off my friend, to compare the service with my “Cadilliac” Verizon plan because I wanted to see how the service worked for myself before I made the switch. Then I got a AT&T 4s, then I just got 2 Verizon 5’s. I was switching the sim that I had originally purchased to set up the 4 into all the phones. I switched it into my 5 now with having to cut it down to the nano size. The only problem I’m having (if you even want to call it that) is not being able to get the LTE with my Verizon 5 running on the AT&T network…but from everything I’m reading, looks like I wont be able to unless I either get a 5s/c or switch to a AT&T 5. But thanks again for making everything so simple to follow!

  161. Aris says:

    Hi Bob,
I’ve tried all 3 APN Profiles from Straight Talk and I still can’t connect to the internet. It keeps saying “Safari cannot open the page because your iPhone is not connected to the Internet.” Idk what to do.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Nikki,
      It’s been a while.
      Try resetting your phone.
Press and hold the lock and home buttons util your phone restarts
      Test data and mms
If it doesn’t work remove any APN profiles
Go to Settings->General->Reset and Reset Network Settings
      Test data and mms
If one one the other doesn’t work
      Then follow the guide again

Let me know how it goes

  165. Lexie says:

Okay if I purchase an iPhone 5 unlocked, will I run into ANY problems running ios 7 if I activate the phone through straight talk?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Lexie,
I have purchased three unlocked iPhone 5 and one unlocked iPhone 5s and have gotten them to work with Straight Talk or Net10. I don’t have any problems. Take a look through the comments on this page and you can read about the issues others have had. Go directly to smartphonematters.com and you can read about some of the issues people are currently having.

  166. Sally says:

    Hi Bob,
I followed the first part of your tutorial successfully and am now trying to set up MMS for my 4s running ios 7.0.4 and TF 15.7. After entering the t-mobile sim card, at step 6 Tap Cellular my screen displays Carrier T-Mobile (rather than blank, as shown). Then, in step 8 ‘Look closely at Cellular Data’, unlike your screen prints, mine do not display the APN fast.t-mobile.com or the MMS APN, MMSC, MMS Max Message Size. Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help!
    Sally

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Sally,
The first screen shot may simply be wrong. When I write these guides I am working with 100s of screenshots and it’s easy use the wrong screen shot. Good eye.
In the second case, I am not sure why you aren’t seeing the settings populated with any values. But, it really doesn’t matter. The only reason for the T-Mobile sim is to get access the the cellular data network settings which is hidden when your ST AT&T SIM is in your iPhone. Once you get to Cellular Data Network you are going to go to the Home screen and open Notes. After you put your ATT SIM back in, that screen will repopulate with the values for the ATT SIM. Make sure you understand, you don’t enter any values in Cellular Data Network until after you put the ATT SIM back in your phone and it was recognized.
      Regards
      Bob

However, I cannot send or receive picture messages to/from a non-iphone. Also, I apparently only get 3G. Any suggestions?

  169. Ashly says:

Dear God! Thank you! The people at straight talk are useless! I’ve been trying to get these settings right for months. The ones they sent me didnt work. Yours did!

great news. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
      Regards,
      Bob

      • Ashly says:

And it quit working again this morning. No idea why. The exact same settings are in place and it wasnt turned off. I tried rebooting it again and it still wont work. I’m about ready to throw it against the wall. If I update to ios 7.04 will I still be able to change my settings? I dont have another sim card its just jailbroken. Thanks for all of your help Bob.

        Ashly

        • Ashly says:

Hopefully this will be the last update. I went ahead and upgraded to ios 7.04. First my update failed with an unknown error and it had me go into recovery mode. Then it did its thing and installed the new ios just fine. It asked me if I wanted to update the network settings and I said yes. I then restored my settings and files from backup and everything is working flawlessly. I can mms non-iphone users, Surf the web and everything without wifi turned on.

          Ashly

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Ashly,
Glad to hear you updated and got your phone to work. I’ll be sorry to see you go. Make sure to bookmark the site and check back here before updating in the future.

  170. Bee Yang says:

I am running iOS 7.0.4 with the carrier TFW 15.7 update on my Verizon iPhone 5C. I downloaded the APN settings directly from Straight Talk’s website, and I am able to receive LTE speeds. MMS does work but only when cellular data is enabled. I assumed at first MMS should work fine over the cellular network (as with SMS), but I read in a forum somewhere that iOS 3.1 and above require cellular data in order to receive and send MMS. Is this true or should MMS still work even without cellular data enabled?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Bee,
In theory, you are correct. If a phone has an MMS APN and MMS is enabled it should work. In practice, this doesn’t seem to be the case. I have never seen MMS work on the iPhone without data enabled. unlike SMS, MMS does required a data connection. MMS actually uses a combination of SMS and data to work. An SMS notification tells your phone when a message is ready. Some carriers, like TMobile I think, can even support MMS over Wi-Fi.

Are you just curious? or do you have a reason for asking.
      Regards
      Bob

  171. crystal says:

Hi bob, i hv a iPhone 4S running on iOS 6.1.2 jail broken with the att straighttalk sim I’m really wanting to update to iOS 7 but kinda worried once I update I won’t have any data working. Is this possible?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Crystal,
Most people are able to get Straight Talk data working without an issue. It’s pretty rare do have a phone that data won’t work on, especially if you have the ATT SIM and there is ATT service where you live. Getting MMS working in both directions is more of an issue. Many people follow my guide and get it to work, some get it to work after getting a little help, and some have problems. If you update to 7.0.4 it might just all work, it does for me and many others. Some still need to install the APN profile or SIM swap.

I updated from iOS 6 without hesitating. If you decide to, make sure you aren’t relying on any apps that require the jailbreak. You will be giving up the jail break when you update (you may be able to re jailbreak with ios 7, I haven’t been tracking it)

If you do run into a problem, you can come back and ask for help.
      Regards
      Bob

I just bought an Iphone 5 throught straighttalk.com and my 3g is not working at all. I tried everything you recommended on here and still no luck, please help!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Elise,
If you bought your iPhone from Straight Talk your iPhone is using the Straight Talk Verizon network. The instructions are for iPhones using Straight Talk’s AT&T and T-Mobile network.

I don’t have any experience with the Straight Talk iPhone. My understanding is the phone is suppose to configure when you activate it. Did you have to dial *22890 when you got this phone?

    Hello,

Have updated my IPhone4 to the newest OSI and I have straight talk. I have followed the guide to Sim Swap and just about everything works except IMessage. When I go to my Settings and activate IMessage it says “Waiting for activation…” but never activates. When I click on Use your Apple ID for Imessage, it says “Could not sign in. Please check network connection and try again.”

    Please advise and thanks!

  181. Skylite says:

I was wondering if anyone can help me out. After the update yesterday, my phone is no longer 4G ( I never got LTE after purchasing the new sim card), its 3G. When I got the new sim, my phone no longer said HOME but rather TFW.

I’m in NYC..Manhattan at that. What do you think happened to my 4G service? Is it TFW? Is so…I stocked up on a lot of the old AT&T ST sims so I can cut and replace if need be.

    About my device:
iPhone 5…replacement provided by Apple in May.
MMS worked after I got the new sim
APN Changers do not work unless I select, Straight Talk New.

      • Skylite says:

Hi Bob. Sorry about the late reply. I’m going to give it a go when I get some downtime. My current speed test shows me in Tampa, FL ( remember I’m in NYC…this caused a problem with my Aereo account). My current speeds are 4.72/2.45. I was surprised because it’s normally 2/0.80. After I downgrade I will provide you with an update. Thanks for your help.

      • Skylite says:

        Update…

I went ahead and downgraded. My new speeds are 5.83/1.74 (Averaging about 5/1.7) with a new location of Cocoa, Fl. The screen still says TFW 3G, but now my phone is just as fast as my Verizon LTE modem ( 6 to 7 d/ 2u).
Thanks a million and Happy Holidays.

        • Skylite says:

Wow! I realized I forgot to re-enabled LTE option. I also added the Straight Talk [NEW} APN. My speed is 6.90/2.52.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Skylite,
Sounds like you have made some progress. Excellent. I also suggest going into Settings->General->Reset and tapping Reset All Settings it will clear some of your settings and you will get the 4G speed indicator back. I can’t promise faster data speeds afterwards but it might improve.
            Regards
            Bob

  182. WKY says:

I have an at&t iphone 5c with a straightalk sim installed. When I initially put the straighttalk sim in the phone about 3 weeks ago, data and mms messages worked great and it showed “tfw 4g” and sometimes “tfw lte” in the upper left corner of the screen. For some reason it now says “home 4g” and data & mms messaging do not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • WKY says:

I also meant to say that it is showing that my software version is 7.0.4 and carrier is AT&T 15.5 I reset the phone by pressing and holding the power button and home button at the same time to see if that would help, but it didn’t.

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi WKY,
I have seen this problem before. You phone had something called carrier TFW 15.6. For some reason your phone reverted to ATT 15.5. TFW 15.6 automatically set up your phone for data and MMS, that was one of the items it fixed. ATT 15.5 thinks you are an ATT customer and programs the wrong values.

You have some choices. You could read the guide, the page you left the comments on and set up data and MMS yourself. Or you could try doing a Reset Network Settings from Settings->General->Reset and see if TFW 15.6 returns. You will need to be careful. Just a day or so ago, carrier TFW 15.7, and you don’t want to install this. You need to say No to any prompt to update your carrier.

See I Updated My iPhone to Net10 & Straight Talk Carrier Update TFW 15.7 and Now My 4G Is Only 3G!
Let me know if you have any more questions.
        Regards

        • WKY says:

Alright thank you. I did the reset and nothing changed, so I will try to set up the data and mms tomorrow when I can get a wifi connection.

    • WKY says:

Also to clarify……the sim card is an AT&T Straighttalk sim

  183. Franki says:

I’ve ordered an iPhone 5 running off of AT&T. Does it HAVE to be unlocked to get data? I’m going to be using the Straight Talk LTE SIM that I have purchased trimmed down to nano size. Thanks in advance!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Frankie,
Most people are able to use Straight Talk data with an ATT locked iPhone. Some people report problems getting MMS to work, and say it won’t work. Other readers tell me they got MMS to work. When you get your iPhone, don’t update anything on it. Come back and ask for help. Well, that is, if you want help.
      Regards
      Bob

  184. Laura says:

    Hello.
I have a iphone 4, previous carrier AT&T. Not sure if it is unlocked or not. I am now with straight talk. I have data and SMS text. I can send MMS, but cannot receive. I have tried downloading each of the profiles and nothing is working! Any advice! MMS is the way I communicate with my family. I really want this fixed. Thank you.

  185. Alicia says:

I just received a message from Straight Talk saying “Please power off your phone off and on to recieve the latest updates.” I had seen where someone else had gotten this last month. However, I was wonder if you have heard what happens when someone does this. Will my MMS start working or?

Also, what is everyone’s thought son refurbished phones directly from ST or Walmart’s website? I have found a few phones that are refurbs but I’ve always been afraid I would get one with past battery issues, etc. I am thinking a refurbed iphone 4 or buy the samsung galaxy 2 ST phone. Thanks!

    • Alicia says:

Well, I powered off my phone and turned it back on (per ST’s message) and now I can’t send any pictures to anyone. Before this update, I was able to send picture messages to anyone. :(

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Alicia,
Hey. Follow the instructions here. I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4. If you are lucky, data and MMS will work.

Also, I’d love to discuss phone options with you. What is your budget?

        Regards
        Bob

Thanks, I will try review that website tomorrow and retry the sim card swap. I’m seriously about the can my iphone and buy a straight talk phone.

In regards to phone budget, I really don’t want to spend over $200. I really hate to leave the iphone because I love it but I won’t pay $300-$500 for a ST iphone. I have been thinking about the ST Galaxy 2. I hate to have to get the older model but the 3 and 4 models are on T-mobile and Sprint towers which I don’t want. I did see on ST website a refurbished iphone 4 but it’s gone now. I’m leery about refurbs though for fear it may have a battery issue. I would love a good phone that can last a day but realize most smartphones don’t have a long battery life. Thanks again!

            Alicia,
It would be difficult to get stay with the iPhone for $200. You’d be lucky to get a used iPhone 4 for that on Craigs List or eBay. Rather than the Galaxy S2. I’d take a look at the new Moto G, less than $200 new. It does not support LTE though. The Moto X will, and it will be on sale on Monday for $350 unlocked. (more than your budget). The Google LG Nexus 5 is really nice for $349. You might be able to find a BLU android phone in that price range.
            Regards
            Bob

Thanks Bob. I will read and try that website tomorrow and try redoing the sim card swap.

In regards to the phone, I don’t want to spend over $200. I hate to steer from the iphone because I love it but I don’t want to spend $300-$600 on a ST iphone. That’s just crazy. I have been looking at the ST Galaxy 2. I hate that it’s older but the 3 and 4 are on t-mobile and sprint towers which are horrible. I saw some refurb iphones on ST’s website but they are now gone. I’m leery of refurbs though because I fear them having battery issues with my luck. I would like a nice smart phone that doesn’t die too quickly. Thanks for the help!

  187. Natasha says:

Hello. I have an unlocked iPhone 4 running iOS 7 with a T-Mobile Compatible Straight Talk sim card in it (because I don’t get AT&T Service in my area). The messaging and phone work, but no MMS & data. I tried the first steps (trying the 3 APN profiles) and none of them worked so I don’t know what APN profile I’m assigned to. So I tried your other steps. I switched out my T-Mobile sim, put in the AT&T one, entered the settings you entered (just to try and see if it would work) then I switched out the AT&T Sim and put the T-Mobile one back in. Now my phone shows a big “E” at the top and I don’t think I have data. But I did get a popup that said something like “for MMS to work you have to enter your number” so I entered my number in the settings again. Any Help? How do I start over?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Natasha,
Are you a new customer? Is this the first time you are setting this up?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Natasha says:

Yes this is my first time setting it up. I had an android through straight talk before my iPhone so I’m not new to the company, and I had everything transferred over to my iPhone when I switched.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Natasha,
OK. I can help you set up your phone. I have to tell you though, if you are seeing an E in the status bar, I don’t think you are going to be happy with the Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM on the iPhone. Read this: Is Using Straight Talk Wireless With Your iPhone a Good Idea?
Let me know when you are done reading it and if you have any questions. I’ll help you with your phone after that.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Natasha says:

I can’t use a AT&T Sim Card because AT&T Service is not available in my area. I don’t want to go through some other company and be tied down with a contract and I can pretty much only afford $40-50 a month because of where I’m currently in college. So those are out of the question.. Any other suggestions? If not I would sure appreciate some help on trying to set up my phone anyways. Thanks!

          • Bob Thompson says:

            OK.
Go into Settings->General->Profile, remove any profiles you installed. See the guide if you don’t know how to do this.
Go into Settings->General->Reset, choose Reset All Settings
Follow the guide after that. Try the wap.tracfone APN profile.
            Test data
It is going to show an E and it is going to be slow.
Come back tell me how it went and we can then try to set up MMS.

Also, do you know if the Verizon and / or Sprint network have acceptable coverage where you live? You can get iPhone prepaid service in your price range. You’ll need a Verizon or Sprint iPhone but I’m sure you could sell your ATT iPhone and get an equivalent or better iPhone for the money.
            Regards
            Bob

I have an iPhone 3G that I just converted to Straight Talk. I know old technology, but that is the least expensive route for now since i have dropped Sprint and my Android. ST helped me change my APN and internet and text messages are working but I don’t get MMS. Wondering if you could help me. I have no clue where to start since this is my first time using Straight Talk and dealing with SIM cards and APNs. Thanks for your efforts.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Fina,
Using an iPhone 3G and Straight Talk is a great idea. You’ll have a lot of money. What version of iOS are you running? Do you know if your iPhone is locked?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Fina says:

Hi Bob, thank you for your quick reply.
        I am running version 4.2.1 (8C148).
“Locked”?? Not sure exactly what that means, but I do have phone, internet and messaging that is currently working. I know that I cannot receive messages with pictures at the present time. I bought a new SIM card from Straight Talk, and the APN has been changed with help from Straight Talk Technical Support. I bought the phone from another woman who was using it on the AT&T network before she upgraded to a new IPhone. Thanks!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Fina,
I just put my iPhone 3G on the charger. I am going to ask you to read the entire iOS 7 guide, that is, this page. Click Next Page and read all the sections. You are going to need to do a similar thing on your phone. Read about the SIM swap. I don’t know if it will work on a locked 3G. Mine is locked. AT&T will unlock that phone for free. Do you think the woman you bought it from would take 5 minutes to submit the unlock request for you? See just needs to go to a web page and submit a form.

A “locked” phone will not accept a SIM card from another carrier. So for example, if you have an ATT phone on contract, the phone is locked, you cant use a T-Mobile SIM. When your contract is up, you have paid off the phone and usually the carrier will unlock it for you.

Let me know when you have finished reading the guide.
          Regards
          Bob

    Hey Bob,

I have an iPhone 4S which I used with AT&T, and have successfully ported over my phone number from AT&T to a straight talk SIM. Data and MMS are working, but my iPhone is displaying TFW 3G and not TFW 4G. I was under the impression that I would receive 4G data. I have the tfdata profile installed in iOS 7.0.4. Why is 4G not showing up? Your insight is appreciated. Thanks.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Daniel,
Good question. Check your Settings->General-About->Carrier. Are you running TFW 15.6 or TFW 15.7? Also go to the App store, and get an App called Speedtest, what type of speeds are you getting.

Your iPhone 4s is supports HSPA+, and your iPhone usually shows that as a 4G. The Carrier gets to decide what gets displayed in the status bar for your network connection. I have been seeing my iPhone 5 switch between 3G and LTE this morning after updating to 15.7 last night. with 15.6 it would switch between LTE and 4G. It might be that 15.7 is reporting the HSPA+ connection as 3G instead of 4G.

I am assuming you are using the Straight Talk ATT SIM and not the Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM. Do you know which one you have? Blue or Pink card?
      Regards
      Bob

Everything worked to get my data working again, but when I tried to do the T-mobile sim card trick to get my photo texts working, when i put the T-mobile card in, and went to Settings, Cellular, and then to Cellular Data Network, or whatever, I didn’t even have that option. There was no option to even look at that data… when I put my straight talk SIM back in the phone, it’s the same thing. No option after Cellular. No Cellular Data Network. Now what

  191. Terry says:

Bob, Thanks so much for your tutorial. I also lost my ability to use data unless I was on WiFi, when the Straight Talk system changed. I didn’t even know that was the problem until I found this site. I went ahead and used your method to change my APN and now it works! I can use my GPS apps in the car again! I didn’t even realize how much I used cellular data until I couldn’t! I haven’t done the MMS part yet, I just ordered a T-Mobile sim card on ebay, another tip from you, and when it comes I will have the confidence to attempt that trick, since it was so easy to follow your instructions. Thanks again!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi terry,

I received my T Mobile sim in the mail, and I have just been re-reading the guide to do the sim swap deal. I haven’t updated my iOS yet, still feeling nervous about that. Settings wants me to update to 7. I am curious as to why I might want to update to 6 rather than 7, and if I do, how would I go about that? I’m planning on doing the sim swap tomorrow as it’s late at night and I’m a little crispy. Also, would it make any difference if I update before or after fixing the MMS?

  193. Angelo John says:

I live near St. Louis and I finally was able to send MMS Text with: iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.4, T-Mobile Sim method, AT&T Sim Card, att.mvno APN, TFW 15.6. At one point, with the tfdata APN, I could receive MMS pics but not send them .. just the reverse of other people. It took me hundreds of tries over two days. My eyes were blurry at one point and I entered 66.209.11.33.80 instead of 66.209.11.33:80 a few times. Initially, the APN names weren’t auto re-setting and the T-Mobile sim method didn’t enabe MMS sending. So I tried the power-down/up followed by re-setting the Network Settings. Once APN names started auto re-setting themselves things got better. So then I tried entering the APN data from the bottom up and kept the two APN names visible in the window simultaneoulsy so I could tell if they changed. Also, initially I was trying the MMS verification test with new Cellular Data APN settings before doing the Power down/up restart. That never allowed it to work. Finally, I entered the settings, exited Network Settings and immediately Powered off then on, and suddenly previous in-coming MMS messages started appearing as if they had been hanging out in the ether somehwere.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Angelo,
Great news. You could have asked for help after the first 50 tries :-). It get it though, you wanted to get it to work and you hung in there. Was the guide clear enough? I tried pretty hard to make it easy. Let me know if any parts where confusing.

I am glad you got it to work. thanks for sharing you victory!

Thank you so much for your tutorial. After I updated to iOS7 I lost my data unless I was on wifi. Your guide helped me delete and reinstall the APN and the second one worked for me! Thank you thank you!!!

  195. James says:

Thank you SOOOOO much for the step-by-step instructions for us newbees. I was able to get the data working with the profile. I’m going for MMS as well since my wife likes sending/receiving text messages with pics. I have one question, where do I get the T-Mobile micro SIM card for my iphone 4 w/iOS 7.0.4?

  196. Adam says:

Is it possible to make these APN changes on an AT&T phone without jailbreaking? When I switched to Straight Talk with my AT&T iPhone 4S, I read that it had to be jailbroken to get access to the APN settings. Sure enough, I wasn’t able to view the network settings until I did so. Now, I’m stuck on iOS 5.1.1 until an iOS 7 jailbreak is released…unless it’s possible to make these changes without it. I haven’t been able to play around with 7 yet because I didn’t want to upgrade and lose data/mms funtionality. Are these settings now available in iOS 7? If not, will I have access to them if AT&T approves an unlock request? Thanks for your time and I apologize for any dumb questions I just asked lol.

    • Adam says:

I’ve further researched APN settings and see that they depend on the carrier, not the OS. So, I guess my second question stands. Will I have access to APN settings if AT&T unlocks it for me? Thanks again.

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Adam,
It is possible to change the APN settings on an ATT iPhone without jail breaking. Unlocking your iPhone will not automatically give you access to the APN settings. This guide, the page, you left the comment on, shows you how to access the APN settings. Click next page and read the guide to learn how.

My iPhone was unlocked, many readers report being able to follow it using a locked iPhone, some report difficulty.

You will not see the APN settings on an ATT iPhone because, ATT has hidden them. The phone sets the APN automatically, so they hide the option so you won’t fiddle with the. The problem is they are often programmed incorrectly for Straight Talk and Net10.

Read the entire guide and let me know if you have questions.

        Regards
        Bob

        • Adam says:

Well, interesting development…when I updated to iOS 7, it must have kept the APN settings from the jailbreak?…because it’s working perfectly. Tested data and MMS with no problems.

I will definitely bookmark this guide for the next time that Straight Talk changes the APN values as they did recently.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Adam,
More likely it’s Carrier TFW 15.6. That update now sets the correct APN values automatically for many, myself included. It means no more installing APN profiles, sim swapping, or jailbreaks needed to get data and mms.
            Enjoy it.
            Regards
            Bob

          • Terry says:

Adam, It looks like you were dealing with the same thing I have been dealing with. I have been afraid to upgrade my IOS from 5.1 because I didn’t want to undo anything after I jailbroke it, but I can’t use certain apps until I upgrade. It sounds like you just went ahead and upgraded to 7 and everything still worked for you. Is that right?

  197. Olivia says:

Hi. I have an iPhone 5 set up with verizon straight talk. I cannot access the cellular data network. I can only go on the internet when i have a wifi connection. I have tried all three APN profiles and none of them have worked for me

  198. Ed says:

Yeah! Thanks. Been hitting dead ends since yesterday. One of the profiles I downloaded worked. Thanks so much.

  199. David Clifton says:

So after making the settings and leaving Wi-Fi off I am able to see green texts and surf the Internet! However, when I turn on Wi-Fi I can still send the texts but can not surf the Internet at all. Do I have to go back and install a profile again?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi David,
Are you saying you can browse the web with Wi-Fi turned off? But when you turn Wi-Fi on, you can’t browse the web? That would indicate that there is an issue with your wi-fi connection, not your cellular data? Did I understand correctly?
      Regards
      Bob

      • David Clifton says:

        Bob,

Yes. When the Wi-Fi is on it will not go to any pages, and times out. If I turn off Wi-Fi, it works fine. I have removed the profile and made all the settings in the post, but do I need to re-install a profile to get the Wi-Fi working? This has only started happening since the latest IPhone update was release.

As for the Wi-Fi at my house: I have a rule set to limit the IPhones to a set of IP addresses that are allowed all access open for the Internet. The Iphones are getting the right IPs from DHCP, and the Wi-Fi is working for additional PCs that also connect to my router. They used to work before the last update without any probllems, but now the IPhones get a message stating: “Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding.”

Thanks for taking the time to help!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi David,
A few ideas… You can rule out a problem with your home Wi-Fi by testing with a public hotspot or enabling wi-fi sharing on a notebook computer with a wired connection.

I know that iOS 7.0.3 had some issues with Wi-Fi. I saw a lot of discussion in the Apple support forums.

          You can try this.
          1. Do a hard reset (hold home and lock buttons until the phone resets)
          2. test data and wi-fi
          3. if it doesn’t work remove your APN profile (if installed)
          4. Go into settings and do a reset network settings
          5. test wifi, data, and MMS
          6. if data and mms don’t work. Install the APN profile if you only need data. SIM swap for data and MMS

The APN profile will not affect your wi-fi. Let me know how it goes.

          Regards
          Bob

          • David Clifton says:

            Bob,

I tried all the choices, but nothing changed! I am back at your settings to get everything working through 4G on StraightTalk’s access and network (ATT phone and SIM). On 4G everything works (Data / Internet / MMS with pictures in texts.)

I have found a fix for the Wi-Fi after stumbling through a lot! If I put a HTTP Proxy address and Port into the Wi-Fi settings for my home network it works! I first used a program called Fiddler (http://fiddler2.com/get-fiddler) to use my PC as the proxy to see what the IPhone was doing. When I connected the IPhone to the Internet through Fiddler on my PC everything was fast and worked. My PC is also connecting to my home network through the wireless router. I later found a public HTTP Proxy Server to connect to (74.221.79.206:3128) from the http://proxy-list.org/en/index.php?pp=any&pt=any&pc=United+States&ps=any#proxylist Website. This worked also, but very, very slow!

Surely this is a bug with the 7.0.4 IOS? What do you think? How to proceed? I really would want a faster HTTP Proxy Server if I am forced to use this as a fix.

            Thanks for your help!

            David

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi David,
Hmm. If you can use your Wi-Fi with the use of a proxy on your PC and one on the internet too, that sounds like a DNS problem. Your phone doesn’t seem to be resolving domain names. When you use the HTTP proxy, the proxy is resolving the domain names into IP addresses. On your PC, ping a few web sites from the shell. e.g. ping google.com, ping amazon.com. with the proxy settings removed from your iPhone. Try using safari to load these sites by ip address. See if that works.

The public http proxy you are using is probably slow due to the fact it has a lot of public traffic.

Let me know how it goes.

            Regards
            Bob

          • David Clifton says:

            Bob,

I was doing exactly the DNS troubleshooting you asked about when I tripped into the HTTP Proxy testing! I changed my DNS Servers on the IPhone and tried a couple like the 8.8.8.8, and 8.8.4.4 of Google, but couldn’t even get to Google when testing via Safari.

The Wi-Fi will not resolve / connect to the IP of Google, nor MIT, nor Usbank either. I have to put in the Proxy to get anything Wi-fi to work.

            David

          • Bob Thompson says:

            David,
This is pretty weird. We have been talking about http… Do any other apps work on your wi-fi? Are you able to use mail? Maybe you could install a ping app on your phone and see what you can ping. Strange you can access a proxy server on the web but not connect by IP to a web server.

            Regards
            Bob

          • David Clifton says:

            Bob,

I have installed a Ping App and it is working. I can enter a WebSite Name (Web.MIT.Edu) and it resolves the address to their IP and pings with response times from 35.1ms to 64.3ms. While running the ping I was also trying to attach via Safari to web.mit.edu, which gives me the normal time out and server stopped responding error message.

I tried to send and receive a couple messages through GMAIL from the phone and it looks as though it is sending, but it never gets through to the distant accounts. I sent to the phone from those accounts, got the initial warning that I have a message from GMAIL. However I am unable to get the app to login or let me read the messages. I think it has cached data to even let me into the app.

I can not connect to the APP Store to check Featured apps, nor Search for apps on Wi-Fi. I am able to get updates from the App Store on Wi-Fi.

Therefore, I think I am only having issues with HTTP and HTTPS traffic. Weird—Yes!

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hey David,
Do you know how to run WireShark, its a network packet analyzer that runs on PCs and Macs. We could look at the network traffic for your HTTP requests and see if the responses are coming back to your iPhone.

I was also thinking we could set up a web page, have to try to load it and see if the request makes it to the server.

            Let me know.

            Regards
            Bob

          • David Clifton says:

            Bob,

Loaded up Wireshark on my Desktop to try to capture the Wi-Fi traffic from the Iphone, but all I can see is the desktop’s traffic. I can ping the desktop from the IPhone and see the responses between them. After much reading and testing, I conclude that I would need to purchase a special AirPCAP USB Adapter to be able to capture the Wi-Fi traffic!—Not going to happen. I will have to wait on another update to see if Apple fixes their code.

Thanks for all the help, but I am stuck with only using Cellular Data for all my Web / HTTP traffic until the next update.

            David

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hey David,
I did it with my laptop. I connected it to the ethernet port and set up wifi sharing on the laptop. I connected the iPhone to the laptop wi-fi and rwn wireshark on the laptop and captured the traffic from the wifi card. I could monitor the iPhone’s traffic.

Hmm. What type of router do you have, you may be able to set it so you can see all the traffic on your network using wireshark.

            Regards

do i have to unlock my iPhone 5c to bring it to ST? it’s an at&t phone so wasnt sure if i could just buy the sim and it would work or if i still need to unlock the phone.

    thank you

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Becca,
Yes. My iPhone 5 was unlocked. May readers report being able to set up locked iPhones. In general, getting your data connection working on a locked iPhone is easy. Some readers report difficulty setting up MMS on locked iPhones.

If you paid full price for your iPhone 5c and you still have an ATT account or you paid the ATT Early Termination Fee, AT&T will unlock the phone for free. And I recommend you do that.

Read the whole guide though, and understand the process to set up MMS. If you decide to go with ST. I can lay out the steps for you.

Thank you Bob! I have an iPhone 4(unlocked) on ST and just updated to the new iOS 7, latest version. I have been with ST for a while and have the older sim…followed your guide and used the tfdata/mms2, also left off the optional ua prof. Everything works perfectly as of now. It did not take the first time, so I started entering the values from the bottom up…in reverse. All is working well! Thanks again, Sir…you should win an award for your hard work and help! Very much appreciated!

  208. B. Yeazel says:

earlier this week i did the upgrade to ios 7… my daughter warned me and said I would be sorry all her friends with iphones have had nothing but trouble, but I did not take her advice and so sorry I did not now. Today is Sunday . my Straight talk service went out yesterday so I had to add money to my account( pin card for service for the month) We was on the to a larger town around us and on the way there I up’d my phone.. Once I added the money to my account .. i no longer had internet on my phone.. not cool when using my phone for GPS .. needless to say ..horrible day and lots of stopping and asking for directions since I could not call ST and gte any assistance since they said I had to use a different phone while they helped me.. I called them this morning waited patiently on the phone and I could not understand the operator and her accent.. So I am here looking for help.

    1. I did go thru your steps. I used the first apn you offered and now my phone has internet again with out having to use my wifi here at home.

    2. I have had my iphone 4 for 9 months and never ever has MMS on it..

What should I do from here? I actually didn’t think I could have MMS since I was straight talk.. I am so over using iphone.. I could not go back to android soon enough. but must wait till next March/14..grr

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey B.
Sorry to hear you lost your Internet when you needed it for GPS. That stinks. You can get MMS working on your iPhone. It’s a bit of a hassle because the Settings screen to enter the configuration values are hidden. The second half of this guide show a trick to allow you to set it up.

There are two issues you also want to be aware of. With you iOS 7 update, you may be able to use data and MMS on your phone without any setup or profiles. It works for some people, not others. Also this week some ST customers are having trouble receiving MMS. My suggestion.

Read the second part of this guide that talks about MMS. Also read this. I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4.

Don’t try any of this yet, just read it. Let me know if you got the text message mentioned in the article. I can give you some suggestions. Just leave another comment when you are ready.

      Regards
      Bob

Bob, Im desperate to get my mms and data working again. I tried avoiding the new update like the plague, but my phone made me do it. I have straight talk obv, and I reset my settings like you said, but now im stuck on how to download the new APN settings. I dont get how I do that?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Nikki,
Follow the instructions here I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4.
Try that, follow the link to the appropriate guide if needed. This page is one of the guides. You just need to click next page to go to page 2. It shows step by step what to do. Look for the tfdata profile.

      Regards
      Bob

    • Joe Gates says:

Have an iphone 4s running 7.03 was getting data and mms picture messages perfectly for weeks. Then I received a text message from strait talk to reboot my phone for update to complete. After reboot no more data or mms messages.

I tried the T-Mobile swap with other youtube guides which had worked before today but no longer worked! grrrr

spent two hours with ST support they showed me how to install ST apn profile just like the guide does here but still no data or mms message

so I tried the sim swap here

after doing the T-Mobile sim swap my cellar data network settings were correct for tfdata all the way down to the bottom (in other words my settings should have worked)

so as a last resort I added the extra value shown in this guide:

      MMS UA Prof URL: http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

after adding that my data and mms messaging now work again

      thanks a ton!!

now I can wait for another ST update to tip me over again!!

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Joe,
Thanks for leaving a comment. This is great news. I am glad you got your phone working. FYI, lots of Straight Talk customers are having trouble receiving MMS this week after that text message. Let me know if you have trouble receiving MMS in the future.

    Hey Bob –
Glad I ran across this! I got my step-daughter an iPhone 4 for Christmas last year. I had it unlocked, and got the Straight Talk ATT sim. All was well, until ST started changing their APNs.
I got a TMO sim (you can get them free from TMO), and fixed it. Then it seemed like I was having to ‘re-fix’ it every week or two.
    Finally, here comes OS7….
So now that her phone is running 7.0.4, neither data nor MMS would work.
I tried some APN settings I found online, using the sim-swap method, but they didn’t work.
I used your guide, and the 2nd APN on your page worked!
Now she finally has working data & MMS again.
I bookmarked the guide in her phone, so maybe next time she’ll be able to do this on her own, because you *know* ST can’t leave well enough alone!
Thanks for the big help, Bob!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      TripleJackInGA,
Thank you for the comment. I am glad you followed the guide and found your APN. It is great to hear when the guide has helped people.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Molly,
Go to Settings General Reset. Reset your network settings.
      follow the guide.
in part one, look for the tfdata profile and try that first.

so I should tap on “Reset network settings” and then follow the guide by removing and reinstalling the APN profile (the TFdata one)? I never had to tap on the “reset network settings” before and followed the step and it worked. I wonder what it is this time that it didn’t. Any idea? Is it Straighttalk’s fault? Because this literally happened right before they sent me the message of “please restart your phone for updates”, so I’m wondering if it actually has to do with Straighttalk. Anyway, let me know if I was correct on the first question. Thanks a lot Bob!

      • Molly says:

        Hi Bob,

Sorry for the constant spamming on the comments. I just want to inform you that I got it fixed. I had the TFData APN profile installed previously while it wasn’t working ( I didn’t bother to remove it since it wasn’t working), then I followed your advice by clicking on “reset network setting”. Then suddenly my phone’s 4G just started working again on its own, data and MMS all work as well. I guess I didn’t need to reset anything for MMS either even though I just updated my IOS from 7.0.3 to 7.0.4 (usually I do every time I have to update it). Not sure why…but as long as it works, I’m good! Thanks so much again for your support. Don’t know what I’d do without your help!

That is good news. I can handle a little reader spam. Make sure you test both sending and receiving mms if you have not. Many readers are reporting problems receiving mms. Which I think is due to some network updates.

I can send mms but I can’t receive mms, data works great with tfdata APN. I’ve tried every APN possible via sim swap & even mixing APN/mms/proxy, nothing seems to work. Called straight talk to reprovision my service, installed profile etc… Nothing works, please help me! Please email me(strayhorn@live.com)
Been a die hard love/hate apple/mac fan since the mid 90’s & would say I’m pretty savy when it comes to tech things but I’m super stumped… I think it’s not the iOS because I’ve been reading forums where the new carrier update 15.6 works great for a lot of people (iphone 4/4S/5) but I haven’t seen anyone talk about a 5S/5C mms working… I have a good feeling it’s on straight talks end not working! Same thing with my wife’s unlocked AT&T iphone 5 carrier 15.6 new AT&T 4G sim not receiving mms…

  218. Jeff Brownlee says:

Ok, today I got a text from straight talk to reboot my phone. I did it and my MMS started working… Woot! Ok here is my setup: iPhone 4S; TFW 15.6; NOT jail broken; iOS 7.0.3; used iPhone configurator to create the pan settings: apn ID tfdata; apn: http://mms-tf.net; proxy: mms3.tracfone.com; port 80. I have my wife’s iPhone 4 using iOS 7.0.4 and hers is working also. Our SIM cards where purchased about a year ago in November 2012. Hope this helps.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jeff,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I do have some questions about your method though.
Do you mean the iPhone configuration utility? If so, I am not convinced that is why your phone is working? That programs doesn’t have a screen to enter the MMS APN, MMSC and MSS Proxy. From your description, you are sating you entered the MMSC into the APN. Are you using iPhone Configuration Utility 3.5 (289). Is this the screen you are referring to? IPhone Configuration Utility

I think you data and MMS are working because your phone has TFW 15.6 which is automatically configuring your Data and MMS APN values.

I’d like to understand what you did a little more to see if it can help the readers.
      Regards
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Erik,
Did your MMS used to work? Did you set up your Cellular Data Network settings in the past?
      Bob

      • Erik V Jimenez says:

Yes. The phone is jailbroken and I was using unlockit apn settings…but since straight talk updated their system I had to remove the apn settings and download theirs. I still have cellular data there and it has st new apn settings…but it doesn’t work.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Erik
Ok. I don’t have an iPhone running iOS 5.1.1. But those APN profiles from unlockit or the straight talk web site will not setup MMS. They are just a configuration file with the data APN in it, none of the MMS config is in there. So, I think you are saying you have the APN profile from Straight Talk installed and that isn’t going to help with MMS. In Settings->General->Cellular do you have a Cellular Data or Cellular Data Network option?
          Regards
          Bob

          • Jerry says:

    Hey Bob,

I am finally getting the chance to do the sim card swap on my iphone 4, ios 7. I’ve been reading reverse reactions about using the old card ST sim. I am using the ST sim that I bought last November. Will I have problems when I do the sim card switch? ST had me go to the apn tf data straight talk website and that made my internet and messages work. However, I can only send picture messages and receive from iphone users only. I was going to do the sim card switch with the tf data settings. I noticed you mentioned to Reset Network Settings before doing this. Does this mean it will clear out the apn tf data website that ST told me to go to last week to get the internet and msging working? I’m very hesitant about doing anything for fear my internet will stop but I would like my picture messages working.

Sorry this is long and thanks to anyone who answers.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Alicia,
If you got data to work by installing the APN profile from straight talk You will be able to remove it at any time and reinstall it later. When you remove it, data stops working, reinstall it data starts working. Do not fear.

Many readers are currently reporting issues receiving MMS in the last two days. You won’t know if you have this problem until you try.

If you see TFW in your status bar, your phone is using carrier update TFW 15.6. There is a chance you can use both data and mms without installing an APN profile or doing the sim swap.

      Try this
Remove any APN profile you have installed.
Do a hard reset, hold home and lock buttons until your phone reboots.
Go into settings, do a reset network settings
      Test data and mms
      If it doesn’t work
Reinstall the APN profile or sim swap.

My guide shows you how to do both step by step.
The link ST gave you has been documented in my guide for months. It’s for the tfdata APN.

Don’t worry about the old sim vs new sim thing, it is a theory. A reader even bought a new sim and still couldn’t get it to work.

If,you find you can send but no receive mms after trying this, check the main page of the site for the latest news.

Let me know how it goes

      Regards
      Bob

      • Alicia says:

        Bob,

I did the sim Card swap one time and updated the settings for MMS Proxy from mms3.tracfone.com to 66.209.11.33:80 and I added the MMS UA Prof URL. ALL other settings were the same as the guide. After the sim card swap, I can still send picture messages but can’t receive from non-iphone users. I haven’t tried resetting anything else because I didn’t want to throw off anything else and make me worse off.

It did take forever to get my service back when I did the sim card swap, finally it’s back to TFW in the Status bar.

Now when I go back into Settings, Cellular, I am not seeing Cellular Data Network like I did a few minutes ago. Also, the Profile I currently have is the StraightTalk one from the website I mentioned to you.

Please let me know what I should try next. I hate to reset network settings or delete the ST profile for fear I will really screw up the phone and lose anything from my ST service. Having to rig this phone makes me want to go out and buy a ST Samsung Galaxy phone so I don’t have this trouble. Lol.

Also, I haven’t been able to receive pictures messages since I updated my iphone to 7 so the recent users reporting having issues the past few days wouldn’t affect me since mine are already broke. :(

Thanks again for the help and being patient.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Alicia,
If you look at I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4 You’ll see that many ST customer using different types of phones are reporting problems. There is little I can’t feel you at this point.

One reader reported her and her husband both use ST. she couldn’t receive mms on her iphone and her husband could using an android phone. They swapped phones and she was unable to receive mms on his android and he could receive on her iphone.

I am not sure what the issue is, but for me, I’d am just going to start telling people that mms isn’t reliable on ST.

The only suggestion I’d have is to do a restore on your phone with iTunes. Try to set it up afterwards and restore your backup after trying to get it to work. I have no evidence this will work now, it did help people in the past.

If you rely on mms, it might be time to look at att pay N go and AIO as alternatives to Straight talk.

Keep an eye in the home page for more updates on this problem.
          Regards
          Bob

  225. James says:

Thanks a bunch! The ST data and picture texting stopped working for me a few days ago. The tfdata APN profile from your website list got both working again on my iPhone 4S, which I just updated to 7.0.4 today. I also had an Onavo profile for data compression installed previously that I had to remove in order for this to work (nothing worked with that installed). Keep up the good work!

  226. Simon says:

Hi Bob, I had my wife’s phone setup for about 3 weeks now using your sim swap method. Yesterday, she lost her cellular data network. She is still able to text to non iphone user so that’s weird. Do you think I have to sim swap again? thanks.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Simon,
      Possibly.
Do a hard reset on her phone (hold lock and home buttons until phone reboots)
      test data and mms
      if it doesn’t work
go into settings do a reset network settings
      test data and mms
      if it doesn’t work
      SIM swap again.
Here settings will likely be the tfdata apn (Straight Talk is updating everyone)

      Regards
      Bob

Thanks Again sorry to be such a grouch but its FRUSTRATING and hopefully there will be no more changes with these phones!!!

Tommy of your wifi is working go into my guide and find the link to the tfdata APN profile on the straight talk website.
If you can access cellular data network in settings. Set your APN to tfdata and you should get data back

Call Straight Talk @ 877-430-2355 and they’ll you through these steps:
      1. Get to Wifi
      2. remove current APN profile
      3. Safari to iAPNupdateTFdata.straighttalk.com (caps for readability only)
      4. Install profile
      5. turn off Wifi and test MMS and ‘net

      Worked no problems.

    Hi Bob,

My brother and I have had Straight Talk on our unlocked iPhone 4S since June 2012 and had minor issues with the data connection but eventually had them resolved once we downloaded the APN settings from unlockit.co.nz. On Saturday, November 16, 2013 we received a text message from Straight Talk saying “please power your phone off and on to receive latest updates” and ever since that night my brother and I have not had any data connection.

I called Straight Talk and they told me to connect to wifi and go to iAPNupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com and download the new APN settings. I have been scared to do it because I do not want it to affect our phones receiving calls and making calls.

If we download the APN settings from the iAPNupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com will it affect receiving phone calls and making phone calls? And will this make our iMessage work again? And will updating to the ios 7.0.4 on the iPhone 4S be a good or bad idea?

Sorry for all the questions! I am nervous to install without being sure and by reading the comments you know what you’re talking about!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Dominque,
You are the first person to tell me about getting such a text message from Straight Talk. I would not worry thought. Straight Talk is in the process of updating the APN settings for its customers. In fact many readers report having their APNs change without any notice from Straight Talk so maybe they are changing this policy.

Removing the unlockit.co.nz APN and installing the one from Straight Talk won’t break your voice or SMS service. It will simply just restore your service. This page you left the comment on is a guide that will show you step by step how to remove the old profile and install the one Straight Talk. Just install the one labled tfdata.

If you want your MMS Picture Messaging to work, read the second part of the guide. It shows you how to set up both data and MMS. You may have noticed you have been unable to exchange picture messages with non iphone users.

I am using 7.0.4 on my iPhone 5 and I have no issue. Some readers are reporting problems with receiving MMS, but it doesn’t seem like you have had MMS working.

If you phone is on 7.0.2 or 7.0.3, I’d get my data working again and maybe update later. IF your phone show a TFW in the status bar instead of HOME, you may not even need to install the profile to reg your phone to work. Go into the settings, remove the old profile (see the guide if you don’t know how). Then go to Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings.

Test your data, if it works well you are done. If not follow the guide and install the tfdata profile.

Let me know if you have questions and how you make out.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Dominique says:

I have 7.0.2 on my phone and my brother has 7.0.4 on his phone, so I will update mine to 7.0.4. We plan on changing the APN as soon as we get wifi. We also both have TFW. Another question, every time Apple sends a software update will we lose data and have to change our APN settings again?

As far as the MMS, we were only able to receive pictures and videos from other iPhone users, no other phones. Will updating this new APN still allow us to send and receive pictures and videos to other iPhone users?

And, of course, another question haha. We were only able to receive group messages from iPhone users also, if there were any non iPhone users in the group chat we couldn’t receive the texts. So will we be able to still receive group messages from iPhone users?

Again, sorry for all the questions but you’re very helpful! Thanks so much.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Try this
Go into the settings, remove the old profile (see the guide if you don’t know how). Then go to Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings. Test your data, if it works well you are done. If not follow the guide and install the tfdata profile.

The APN profile cannot configure MMS and group texts. Taker a look at the second half of the guide to see how to set that up. Every iOS update brings its suprises. So sometimes you need to reinstall the profile or enter your settings again.

Let me know if you have questions and how you make out.
          Regards
          Bob

    Thank You!

I have updated this morning to IOS 4 , I have a Straight talk on an Iphone 4. MMS Never worked. I had installed a year ago the APN Profile from http://www.unlockit.co.nz.

This morning after update my MMS Worked first time ever but then my cellular data did not work.

I HAVE UNINSTALLED THE APN Profile from unlockit, removed it and i did not have to restart the phone.

It is working with my WiFi off both on MMS and Data.

When you remove the profile in Settings it may ask you a code remember that code is your personal phone unlock code. Do not get confused. Whatever you use to access your screen that is the code you should use. 4 digit numbers.

    Hope this helps everyone.

Finally MMS and Data working perfect afte IOS 4 …Awesome!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Cristina,
Thanks for commenting. I am glad to hear you have data and mms now. I didn’t know about the lock code being required to remove the profile. I will have to try that out.

      Regards

I have an iPhone 4 on ST. Worked fine for months until 7.0 and the ST 15.6 carrier update. No Data. I uninstalled the APN the tried to install the new tfw one. I am told I cant have two APNs but i deleted the APN from the profile. Any idea what is going on?

  236. Pam says:

I have been using ST with my iPhone 4 for about a year with no data problems. I had originally used http://unlockit.co.nz to install my APN profile as per instructions I found at that time which told me to use AT&T settings. I recently lost my network while on a trip but was able to restore my settings by deleting my profile & reinstalling them as before. That lasted only a few days and I was unable to get any of the settings to work again. Was also unable to use any of the ones provided here. Fortunately I decided to scroll down the list of providers on the unlockit screen. Lo and behold, it now lists Straight Talk. I chose Straight Talk (new ) and everything is now working as it should. Hopefully it will continue to work. I was very close to dropping ST and going back to a contract, even knowing how unhappy I would be.

    Hope this helps someone.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Pam,
Glad your phone is working. Thanks for taking the time to share your solution. The unlockit.co.nz site is great. I used to use it and recommend it. Straight Talk uses three different APNs, att.mvno, wap.tracfone, and tfdata. Straight Talk seems to be moving customers all to the tfdata profile over time. So a lot of customers need to find the new profile.

My guide has the link to all three profiles from the Straight Talk site directly. So its pretty much the same thing. Readers should keep in mind that these APN profiles, regardless of what site you download them from, only configure data, not MMS. If you don’t need MMS, use the profiles. Otherwise you need to follow the second part of the guide.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Nanette says:

I too had problems after updating my iPhone4 after installing the news IOS update 7.0.4 and using Straight Talk. I went and uninstalled it and went to unlockit and installed what I have used in the past, the OLD apn. Still I had no internet if I disconnected from my home’s wireless network. So I went in and used unlockit’s NEW apn setting for ST and now everything is fine. I have internet with and without my home wireless connection. I don’t know if I can send pictures in messages any more but I can always email them if need be.

        Great website you have here!

I do not have the “cellular data network” option to select… Any further suggestions to fix this?

  238. James says:

    Hi Bob,

Your instructions have been a great and have worked for me. I have an unlocked iPhone 4S with the AT&T straight talk SIM card and have done the sim swap method. The setting that worked for me is the one for tfdata with mms3.tracfone.com. I set it up in July 2013 and has been working fine sending and receiving mms. It has also continued to work after updating to IOS 7. However, a few days ago it stopped receiving mms. I can still send mms to anyone, but can not receive without using iMessage. I have reset the phone and it has not fixed it. The wierd thing is if reset the networking settings alone, it will receive mms for about 10 minutes and stop again. I think I have tried just about everything and was hoping you may have some suggestions. Data is still working on 4G and I made sure mms is on in the settings.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi James,
Did you recently take install 7.0.3 or 7.0.4? A few readers have been also reporting this issue. My mms works. I dont use it too often. I did some testing last night send a half dozen pics to my iphone from another phone, it worked fine.

Are you saying your phone works for 10 minutes without sim swapping after the network reset?
Let me know, I’d like to see if we can figure this out.
      Regards
      Bob

      • James says:

I did update to 7.0.4 yesterday thinking that would fix the problem, since the mms was not working before the update. It didn’t work. Sending an mms is no problem. It’s just receiving from a non iPhone user that is the problem. The last mms received from and android phone was on 11-14-13. I’m not sure if there was an update to AT&T or straight talk network that day that would have created the problem.

The iPhone works after the network reset without doing the sim swap afterward, which surprised me. I forgot to mention that from the beginning, I had to use the MMS UA Prof URL setting in order for the mms to work.

  239. Joe B. says:

After doing without for year and half. Straight Talk finally fixed iPhone 4 problem with all data settings apparently on last upgrade BUT until I read your website and followed your reset instructions never knew it and problem never would . You are the MAN!!! Thanks for all you do.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Joe,
Great news. Thanks for the comment. when I posted my first guide, I figured it would help people. I was surprised to find out how many people were living with broken data and MMS!

Hello, I just updated to ios 7.0.4 last night, and have not been able to receive any service at all, and have installed and reinstalled multiple apns, multiple times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Faruk,
I would soft reset my phone. Hold the HOME and LOCK buttons until the phone restarts.
      Test your phone.
      If that doesn’t work
go into setting and Reset All Settings.
Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Faruk says:

Yeah there’s been no difference in doing that, I think I’m just going to call straight talk and deal with them, thanks for the help though.

i did update my 4 from ios 6 to 7.0.4 successfully. after which my HOME changed to TFW.

out the gate, all 3G messaging and data worked except phone does not receive incoming MMS pic msgs sent from a non-ios user.

i did the sim swap hack, reboots, etc. with and without mms ua prof url setting and still cant receive MMS pic msgs from non-ios user.

oh well, maybe it will mysteriously start working in a few hours…

thanks for all your great info and help.

I have an unlocked AT&T Iphone 4 and have been with ST since Feb. It still runs on 5.1.1, as I have never updated it. Last week after I was unable to access data, I updated the APN settings through iapnupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com. ST initially wanted me to update to ios 7.0.3, but I told them I didn’t want to. Data is working great with updated APN settings – but, would you recommend I update to 7.0.3. I have been extremely reluctant since I have read there can be glitches. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Tara,
I am using iOS 7.0.4 on my iPhone 5 and I am happy with it. I don’t have direct experience with iOS 7 on the 4 or 4s though. With respect only to using Straight Talk, if your data is working there is no need to update. As an iPhone user, you are now two versions behind so at some point you may want to update at some point. There are always glitches with updates, but they don’t always effect everyone and eventually get fixed.

If you decide to update, do a backup first. Make sure you plan the time to update, and are not waiting for a critical call or need your phone for driving directions…

If you do update come back and let us know how it goes.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Tara says:

        Hi Bob –

I updated to 7.0.4 over the weekend and all seems well!! Funny that I can now send MMS to anyone, but cannot receive from non-iphone users.

Thanks for providing so much info in an easy to understand way. It’s tough for someone who isn’t technically savvy to get all this worked out especially since I can’t just take my phone to a store to get advice.

I’ll keep checking your website for any information on new updates! Thanks again!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hey Tara,
Sorry to hear that. You are not alone. Several readers are reporting the same issue. I updated to 7.0.4 and my MMS is working in both directions. I have been testing my MMS between one Net10 phone and one Straight Talk phone and it seems to work. Maybe I need to try sending to more people to see if there is a problem.

I started this site, after I went from having to get my own cell service after years of having a company account. I knew I did not want to pay 100 a month for service, so I had to figure out all this prepaid stuff.

For now, try resetting your phone. Hold HOME and the lock buttons until the phone reboots. test, if it doesn’t work, remove any apn profiles, and then reset your network settings (settings general reset). Test again. If that doesn’t work, try the SIM swap (I think i remember you did this before). When you put you ST sim back in, all your values may look correct, except you won’t have the MMS UA Prof URL, add that back and save). This might help.

I will get a post up on the main page about this issue. Keep an eye there for updates. Let me know if you have any more questions.
          Regards
          Bob

    Hi Bob
I’m using an AT&T iPhone4 with Straighttalk and I’ve used your guide twice now. Both times it has worked without fail. The first was when I updated to 7.0.3 (which is when I saw the change from HOME to TFW). The second was today, which is when my last month’s time ran out and my reserve started. Does this mean I’ll have to reset my profile every month? Is there any way to keep that from happening? Any info would be very much appreciated.
And thank you so much for posting this guide! I was honestly willing to trash the phone after the first time this happened.

    -Caitlyn

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Caitlyn,
I cant say.I have heard from a number of readers that when there time has run out their data / mms dont work after they refill. I am on auto refill and have never had an issue. If it happens again. Try a soft reset. Hold the lock and home buttons until the phone resets. test. If it doesn’t work, try a Reset Network Settings.

If you are using the tfdata profile, an 7.0.3 you might be able to get your phone to work without SIM swapping or profiles. Remove your profile. Do a network reset. Test your data and MMS, it might work.(Mine does) If it doesn’t repeat the process but do a reset all settings. test. If it doesn’t work. install the profile again.

iOS 7.0.4 is out. If you do what I said above, you will have the chance to see how it goes. You might also want to make a note if there is a difference if you refill before your time expires or not.

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Milo says:

I am on auto refill as well, but I had a same issue when I had to refill myself every month. So, best bet, set up auto refill and you dont have to worry. They let you know by sms 5 days before due date, so if you dont have funds on the card you have time to put money on it…….

  245. Joe says:

I keep reading here about a new AT&T st SIM card a person can buy. Any advantage to iPhone 4 user or just 4s and higher?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Joe,
Two issues. Straight Talk uses both the ATT and TMobile networks. For a while, they stopped selling the ATT network SIM cards. This was bad for iPhone users because most would only get slow 2G speeds. If you have a T-Mobile SIM and your data is slow, you want a new ATT SIM. Do you see an E in your status bar when you use your data?

They started selling ATT SIMs again in the summer, and in the fall started selling ATT sims that support 4G LTE. If you have an iPhone 5 or above then you would want to get a new SIM. Otherwise its not a big deal
      Bob

      • Joe says:

        Hey Bob,

No I am using the micro AT&T SIM card that came with the byop kit from Walmart. That kit contained three or four SIM cards: a reg and micro AT&T sims and T-Mobile sim. I’m still using a 4 and didn’t think the new sim would benefit, but its good to know I can get 4g when I move to a 5.

As a side note, when using the sim swap hack on iOS 7, I read somewhere that you could start making your entries from the MMS UA Prof URL and work your way to the top without losing entries and having to re-enter. It was something about if you scrolled down beyond a particular position in the dialog it caused entries to be lost and unless you scrolled back thru you might not notice they had been lost.

I’m still on 6, so I can’t say this for a fact. I guess I’ll go ahead and install 7.0.3. I’m not one to jump on a new version (v.0.0) because there are invariably issues, so I choose to wait a couple of updates.

Thanks for the info, and nice job on this blog…

        Cheers!

        • Joe says:

          Bob,

One other thing: AT&T unlocked iPhone 4, iOS 6, tf APN settings

How do I get the carrier update to my phone? I’m still showing HOME. Are carrier updates user installed (accept or decline option) or auto pushed by AT&T? Or will it happen after I move from 6 to iOS 7.0.3?

          Cheers!

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Joe,
Usually the carrier updates happen are pushed to your phone, appear when you plug into iTunes, when you go to settings, general, about, or come when you update iOS.
In the first three cases, you are prompted to install or decline. I first saw carrier update TFW 15.6 when I was running iOS 7.0.2. You will get it as part of updating to iOS 7.0.3. In fact, many readers, think the change from HOME to TFW comes from 7.0.3, but it is the carrier profile.

I am guessing that iOS 6 devices are not getting TFW 15.6, I don’t have an iOS 6 phone anymore and I have yet to find a reader using iOS 6 that reports getting 15.6.

About, iOS 7. I am using it. I am happy with it. works for me. In fact, I am using 7.0.4 since last night. From a using Straight talk perspective, seem fine. If your phone is working well, don’t feel the need to update to 7.0.4 unless you are ready for the features and potential bugs.

Most people who comment here, report being able to update. Some people, ask for help because data or mms have stopped working. Most of the time, a Reset Network Settings, Reset All Settings, or soft reset gets their phone working again.

If your APN is tfdata, there is a good chance you will no longer need to install profiles or sim swap to get your phone working. TFW 15.6 improves added changes to program your phone automatically for Straight Talk.

Some people need to SIM swap. You asked about the order to enter values. I usually enter the MMS APN and copy it to the clip board. Then I do the rest of the MMS settings. I then I copy / paste the APN into the data APN and MMS APN as needed. I find that if you paste the value in but don’t close the edit(you see the cursor still in the APN field) you can still scroll the screen to check your values.

I hope this helps. Come back and let us know how it goes if you do update.
            Regards
            Bob

          test data and mms
          dont install any other profiles.
Did you buy a full price ATT iphone 5s?
          let me know

            Bob,

I reset the network settings, and now both the data and mms are working! No profiles are loaded. So, does the 5s naturally support data and mms on its own with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM?

I did buy a full price ATT iphone 5s.

I just saw that iOS 7.0.4 is out. Okay to upgrade without losing data and mms?

            Thanks!!!!

            Kyle

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Kyle,
I wasn’t aware iOS 7.0.4 was out yet. I haven’t had the chance to try it. Keep an eye on smartphonematters.com and I will post as soon as I try it.

            As for you iPhone 5s….
There was a carrier update called TFW 15.6 right before 7.0.3 came out. If you have been a ST user for a while, you noticed your network name changed from HOME to TFW. With this update, your iPhone correctly programs the Straight Talk APN settings now. At least for some users, including me.

It doesn’t work for everyone. Some people just need a reset to get it working others still need to follow the steps in the guide.

FYI.. your iPhone may not be unlocked. Your Straight Talk ATT SIM will worked in a locked ATT iPhone. You’d have to put a T-Mobile SIM in your phone to see if it is truly unlocked. There is a big debate about whether these full price iPhone 5s are unlocked. With the iPhone 5, if you bought the full price phone and did an iPhone Restore it unlocked. The reports for the iPhone 5s are inconsistent.

            Regards
            Bob

      Michael,
Yes. Any tmobile network sim. In fact most non att network sims. If you live in the US, non att network sim means tmobile network, there aren’t many other choices. . And yes ebay is a great place to find one.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Nan,
you need to remove the Straight Talk SIM, insert a T-Mobile sim, go to Cellular Data Network, Go the HOME screen, run Notes, and then put you ST SIM back in your phone.
Take a look at the steps in the guide again, it’s pretty detailed.

Thanks soooo much for the detailed info! I had gotten a link for the pan settings to be downloaded automatically. MMS worked but not the data. Looking at the profiles listed i already had the first one so I tried the second one and that did it, and I did not lose the MMS. It took me a few tries too to find the rest of the guide. Just incase someone hasn’t responded the the person that couldn’t FIND the guide, just look above the comment section (about halfway down the page) and click on ‘next’. I am so happy it was an easy fix for me!
