I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4

Photo Nov 19, 3 09 15 PM

Well, actually I can. However many readers are reporting that they are having problems receiving MMS messages using Straight Talk and Net10. The reports have started coming in after the update to iOS 7.0.4. But here is the thing, I got a similar report from a Windows phone user and someone on iOS 6 too. Possibly an Android user too, but I don’t have enough info on that case yet.

I wonder if the problem is on the Straight Talk and Net10 network and not with your phones? My MMS seems to be working, at least, in the limited testing I have done. I have exchanged picture messages between two phones, one using Straight Talk, the other using Net10. I also just exchanged pics with a phone on Verizon too.

If you are having a problem, post a comment. Include your phone and OS, you APN settings, and if you can send and or receive. I can’t promise to fix your problem. But if all of you readers share your whats going on for you, we might find a solution.

UPDATE 23 NOV 10:34 AM EST

Many readers are reporting problems with Data and MMS using Straight Talk and Net10.

If you are a Net10 or Straight Talk customer using an iPhone and your data stopped working…

Try this:

  1. Remove any APN profiles installed on your iPhone
  2. Go to Settings->General->Reset and choose Reset All Network Settings
  3. After your phone restarts, Press and Hold the Home and Lock buttons until it restarts again
  4. If you don’t see TFW, in the status bar continue to Step 9
  5. Test your data connection
  6. Test sending & receiving MMS (if you care about MMS)
  7. If your phone works you are done
  8. if it doesn’t continue on
  9. Follow one of my guides to set up your data or data and MMS
  10. When you install the APN profile, try the tfdata APN profile first
  11. Leave a comment if  you have a question.

Guides for above:

How to Set up Net10 Web, Data, and MMS for Your iPhone Running iOS 7
How to Setup Straight Talk Wireless Data and MMS for your iPhone running iOS 6
How to Setup Net10 Web, Data, and MMS for your iPhone running iOS 6

If you are a Net10 or Straight Talk customer and you can’t receive MMS…

I currently have no solution for this. This problem started this week.  There are lots of comments on the subject. I think the problem is the network, not your phone. iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone users have all reported this problem. Keep an eye out here for more info as it becomes available.

A couple of notes.

  • changing to a new SIM will not solve the probkem and allow you to receive MMS.
  • a ST SIM that cant receive MMS in an iPhone can’t receive MMS in an Android phone

UPDATE  20 NOV 2:45 PM EST

If you leave a comment about your MMS working or not working, let me know how old your SIM card is. Some readers and I wondering if MMS is only working for readers that have the newer SIMs.

UPDATE  19 NOV  3:15 PM EST

I am getting a lot of questions about not being able to receive MMS from Net10 and Straight Talk customers. Apparently,  last night Straight Talk and Net10 are sending customers text messages telling them to power their phone off and on to get the latest update. I just got the message too. After I restarted my iPhone it wouldn’t receive MMS. I did a Reset Network Settings and it started working again.

Straight Talk and Net10 have been updating customer’s data and MMS APNs to tfdata from att.mvno and maybe even wap.tracfone. Many readers are reporting the need to update their profiles or SIM swap again.

Straight Talk emailed me and told me, my Motorola atrix model mb860 with 2.3.4 android cannot receive pictures in texts from iphone users.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Frank,
Somehow I doubt that is true. I recommend trying the Straight Talk APN setting app as well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tracfone.straighttalk.stdatasettings&hl=en

        Hello Bob:
Thanks for reaching out. The phone is also a international version????? I’ve been told. I have researched APN settings and feel I have a good set, as I can text, data, and phone, I can send pictures and receive from android folks not Iphone folk users. I’ve had the phone for 6 months and it runs the ATT network though Straight talk. Perhaps the customer support folks got tried of me asking for assistance
I will try your link. Again thanks for your time

    • Nichole Gonzalez says:

I purchased my SIM card from Straight Talk about a month ago. I placed the card in an iphone. The Web Access works and I have done your troubleshooting steps, but since I have had the phone I have never been able to send nor receive MMS. SMS is working but not MMS. Issue may have been going on longer than realized since my issue is over a month. Any other information you may need to help come to a conclusion please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your time with this matter.
      Respectfully~

Hey Bob, I have an iPhone 4s. I’ve had MMS and data working for a while now, and just recently MMS decided to stop working. I have the T-Mobile SIM. On NET10’s website it says my APN is wap.tracfone but when I was trying the APNs on my phone it was telling me to use tfdata . Any advice to get MMS working again would be great!

    Thanks!

          Hi Lauren,
I’d like to try and help you but this isn’t really much information to go on. For example, what phone do you have? Are you using Straight Talk or Net10? Are you using the att or tmobile sim? What APN are you using? Is your data working? Are you able to to send MMS? Is the issue you can’t receive MMS?
If you could provide some more details I might be able to make some more suggestions.

          Regards
          Bob

            Hi Bob,
So I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, and I cannot receive picture messages, but I can send them however. I am using the At&t sim card from Straight talk. My APN settings are:
            APN:tfdata
            Port:80
            MMSC:http://mms-tf.net
            Multimedia Message Proxy:mms3.tracfone.com
            Multimedia Message Port:80
            MCC:310
            MNC:410
            APN Type:default,MMS,WAP

I hope that this is enough information for you to go on. Thanks for any help that you can provide,I appreciate it immensely.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Lauren,
Ok. It’s been my experience that sometimes is takes several days to start receiving MMS picture messages after you transfer your number to Straight Talk. This happened to me for one account I have. You might want to just wait a week or so and test it then.

You could make sure your APN type is all lower case but I doubt that will help. Some people report getting MMS working by trying different combinations MMSC and MMS Proxy but their isn’t one set of values that work reliably for the majority of people.

I wrote this help page a while ago, you can check that for other suggestions too.
Help with Straight Talk and Net10 MMS Picture Messages

Take a look at the suggestions there. Some people report that after several days they start receiving all the test MMS messages they sent to their phone number.

            Regards

            Hi Bob,
Me again with the galaxy s4 mini. I just got the phone, but I didn’t just switch the number over. I’ve had straight talk with my previous phone as well.
Hopefully there is something that can be done with this new information.

            Thanks,

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Lauren,
If you tried all the permutations of MMSC and MMS proxy values mentioned in the comments, all I can say is call Straight Talk and open a support ticket. Be nice and try to get it escalated to Tier 2 support and they may be able to fix it for you.
            Regards
            Bob

      Hi Angela,
You did not mention which model phone you have, what company where you using you phone with before net10, and if you are using the net 10 att or net tmobile SIM card. I would help to know that.

  12. I have a BLU 5.0 II phone and i use with straight talk.
i was able to get normal text and phone working day 1 but my data and MMS/picture messaging would not work. 3-4 days later i was able to get my 3G/4G data to work on it which is fantastic. still to this day i have not been able to send or accept picture messages or mass texts.
the below setting are what is currently in my phone. now the only issue or difference i see in the settings from other things i have seen that i cannot get to stick is the MCC and MNC settings. when i put in 410 instead of 310 and try to save all of any previous data i entered disappears like i never touched anything and this only happens with this setting. but other than that any advice would be great. BLU support….yea not happening

Hey bob Thanks for the quick reply and for being very helpful when it comes to the settings on all phones.

changed it to just 80 same thing when sending it take about 5 min before it comes back as failed when sending any MMS/picture message

when receiving i get the notification that i have received the MMS message and to download it. try to download continues to fail no matter when or where i do it

        thanks

        James

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi James,
          Two things to try.
          first,
Go to the APN settings page, do a reset to defaults.
Delete any APNs left in the list after the reset.
Create a new APN with your settings and test.

If that doesn’t work. Try this. Note I did this on my nexus, you should be able to do this on your phone.
You are going to put your phone in recovery mode and clear the cache!

          Turn your phone off
once off, hold the volume down. and the power key
use the volume up until you see recovery mode
          tap the power button
          After the phone restarts,
          volume up
scroll to Wipe the Cache Partition
          Tap the power to select
          wait
Reboot system is selected in the menu
          tap power key

          wait for reboot.
Follow the guide again and use the APN values below.

          A couple of notes.
You can backup you phone before you do this, but it shouldn’t erase any data
I did it to my phone 15 minutes ago to make sure it was safe to recommend to you.
I didn’t notice any data missing on my phone.
My nexus 5 is my second phone, so all I can say is all my pics and texts were still there.
My MMS already worked, so I can only say it worked for someone else.

This youtube video is pretty good to see how to do use recovery mode on the nexus 5. PLEASE NOTE, he is selecting a DIFFERENT OPTION than the one you want to choose. you want ******Wipe the Cache Partition*****

Please let me know if you try this or not and how you make out.

          • James says:

Was able to clear the cache Partition i am able to receive MMS and picture messaging as of right now

Sending still does the same things 5+ min right now hasnt failed just keeps saying sending while trying to send a picture message

in your instructions wasn’t sure if you meant to follow the apn settings you instructed in your original guide for Blu phone/straight talk or use the ones i posted currently i am using the ones i posted with the 8080 changed to 80

again thank you for your time and effort

            Thanks

            James

          • Bob Thompson says:

I’d start by follwing my guide. Check your setting on the st site using the link in the guide and match them to the settings in my guide. Start without the APN type and if that doesn’t work then add it.

You can send me screenshots of your setting page if it still doesn’t work. See Taking a Screenshot on an Android Phone

    Dear Bob,

I have a Huawei H883g, Windows 8, OS 8.0 phone bought from Net 10 about 9 months ago. I just now am experiencing problems with not receiving texts and occasionally the person I send texts to do not receive them as well. I do not get an error message that text cannot go. I called customer service, first they told me it was because of a break in network connection. Then added that it was the problem of the person’s phone who was sending me the text. REALLY three different carriers having the same issue. I’m so frustrated with NET 10 right now. The last time I had a problem they had me do a factory reset. I’m researching on my own but not finding anything so much for a Windows based OS. Do you have any suggestions?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Danielle,
Is the problem with plain text messages (SMS) or picture messages and group texts (MMS)? This phone should be using the Net10 ATT network. Do you know if that is the case? Do you know if, in general, the att network works well where you live?

      Please let me know.

      Hi Brooklyn,
Sorry to hear about the problem with your phone. If you bought it at walmart, I think there is a 15 day return policy. I am not sure what model ZTE phone you are using so its difficult to make some suggestions about how to fix it. You can try powering the phone off and on, and redialing the activation sequence, if you were required, to do so. You can also try deleting any existing message threads with images attached. Some times that helps.

    Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Osswaldo

If you just signed up for Straight Talk and you transferred your phone number, it might take a few days to receive MMS. I recently set up three straight talk accounts. I could receive MMS immediately for the two accounts with new phone numbers. It took several days to start receiving MMS for the account with the transferred phone number. when I setup up the account, I tried the SIM in two different phones and could not receive MMS. I gave up and decided to look at it again a few days later, only to find it had started working.

You’ll still need to make sure you have entered your APN settings into your phone correctly. You can also try entering an APN type of default, internet, wap. Some people still have to adjust their APN settings to get it to work. Read these two articles AND the comments to see the different MMSC and MMS Proxy settings that have worked for others.

Thank you so much for the helpful guides you’ve posted. I’m glad they seem to work for so many other people, and I’m hoping that they can maybe work for me as well.

I’ve been sim swapping for a couple of hours (probably a dozen times by now) and putting in all possible combinations of APNs I can find on your site. Before, the wap APN I downloaded via your site got me data but no MMS, so I tried imputing those values for MMS after swapping with a TMobile sim–no luck. Magically, the tfdata APN loaded onto my phone (before I tried your site, I called customer service, so they may have been in the process of changing my APN for me). No MMS still, so I tried imputing all of the values for the tfdata APN after repeated sim swaps. Still no MMS, although I do have data without any of the profiles downloaded.

I use MMS group/picture/iMessaging often so this hitch is really inconvenient. I have an iPhone 4s, iOS 7.0.2 (haven’t downloaded the newest iOS yet, but I’ve heard some people are having trouble so I’m refraining). It’s AT&T enabled, recently unlocked–I just began using Straight Talk three days ago, and their customer service department has been far from helpful. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but if there’s any advice you have for me, that would be extremely appreciated.

Either way, thanks for keeping this site up and running!

Net10 HTC one x internet movin pretty slow and I can’t receive mms ….net10 succs

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi bGilcreast
      1. Which APN settings are you using?
      2. Did you recently transfer your number to Net10?
      3. Do you know if you are using the Net10 ATT SIM or the Net10 TMobile SIM?
      4. What model HTC one are you using (did you bring it from another company?)

If you just transferred your number it can take a few days before you start receiving MMS Picture Messages. I had the same issue recently. I set up three accounts. I could receive MMS on the two accounts with new numbers immediately, the one with the transferred number didn’t work at first, it took several days.

There are some other things that work for people. You can try setting your APN type. You can try changing the MMS Proxy and MMSC values. See the two posts and the comments below if you want to try those options.

Well, it has been four days since I last asked about my MMS issues with my Nexus 5. I had just activated the AT&T sim card, and ported my number. You had suggested I wait a few days to see if it works, and unfortunately, nothing has happened. So I’m just wondering now if you have any other suggestions?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Adam,
Did you look up you APN settings on the web site using the link in the guide? What are they? Are those the values you currently are using in the APN settings on your phone? Can yo still send but not receive mms?
      Regards
      Bob

I can send MMS, but not receive.
        These are my APN values:
        Name: Straight Talk
        APN: tfdata
        Port: 80
        MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
        MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
        MMS port: 80

I didn’t change any of the other values. I’ve tried other settings, but these are the ones that my friend is using. She has the exact same phone, same color, same sim card, same everything. I just don’t understand it.

I just got my AT&T micro sim (Straight Talk) today for my Nexus 5. I ported my number over, and changed all of my APN settings. I used every combination I’ve seen for the APN settings, and everything works perfectly, except for the MMS. I can send MMS, but cannot receive. Is there anything else I can try?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Adam,
For some reason, many people find that it takes a few days to start receiving MMS after transferring your phone number. I had this issue recently too. I set up three new accounts. MMS worked immediately for two of the accounts that had new phone numbers. I transferred a number to the third one and I was unable to receive MMS. I tried the SIM in both an iPhone and my Nexus 5. I finally gave up. I decided several days later to try and get it working, only to find it had starting working.

If you look at the comments on this post, you’ll read that some people have had luck using different MMS Proxy and MMSC combinations. You can also try and set your APN type to default, internet, wap. You can also take a look at this

I HAVE AN ATT IPHONE 4 WITH STRAIGHT TALK SERVICE I CAN SEND MMS HOWEVER I CANT RECEIVE. HOW CAN I FIX?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Missy,
Did you know that using all caps is considered shouting? If you just transferred your phone number to Straight Talk it might take a few days to start working. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts recently. MMS worked for the two with new numbers. MMS did not work for the one with the transferred number.

Did you need to set up any thing to get your data and sending MMS working? I have a guide on how to set up MMS and there any many comments on this article where readers explain what they did do get MMS working.

Are you aware of the difference with iMessage and MMS?
      Regards
      Bob

Cant receive the mms but can send did the update changed apn settings and all

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Luis,
You didn’t provide any information about what phone and apn you are using. If your account is new, and you transferred your number to Straight Talk it sometimes takes a few days to start receiving MMS. Otherwise try the recommendations in the comments.
      Regards
      Bob
