I Installed Straight Talk and Net10′s Carrier Update TFW 15.7 and My Data and MMS Work!

up

UPDATE:

Don’t install the carrier update: Some iPhone 4 and 4s users are reporting real problems. Speeds slower than 3G. I’m not seeing it on my iPhone 5. Most of the time I have an LTE connection.

A reader, Deb, just informed me that there was a new Carrier Update available for iPhone users with iOS 7.0.x. She wanted to know if it is safe to install, would it break anything.

I installed it on my iPhone 5. I tested SMS, Data, and MMS. I could both send and receive MMS. I didn’t need to SIM swap or install any APN profiles. I didn’t make any voice calls. I am not sure what it fixes or improves though. I’ll update this if I experience any problems.

Should you install it? Well, that is up to you.
Did you install it or are you going to wait?
If so, is it working or did you have a problem?

UPDATE 5 Dec 2013
I noticed today that my iPhone 5 network speed indicator is toggling between LTE and 3G. When I get a call the display switches to 3G. With 15.6, it would switch between LTE and 4G. I am not concerned about this right now. The carrier profile can control what is network speed is displayed. ATT used to display 3G for HSPA+ and changed it to 4G before the iPhone 5. yhey wanted to market the iPhone 4s as 4G even though it didnt have LTE. I’ll wait to see if this really results in slower data speeds.

I have a 5s and updated carrier settings to 15.7. My data is now slow to non-existent. I am getting .02-.05 down and the same up, any ideas? Before I was getting around 23 down.

Hi Bob, thank you so much for this extremely helpful info. I switched from AT&T to StraightTalk just this morning keeping my IPhone 4 as part of the BYOP. IPhone was just updated with ios 7.0.4. Had to activate ST over the phone because of error message online but within couple of hours my AT&T SIM was deactivated and so put in the StraightTalk SIM card and all seems to be well.
I’m messaging you to confirm if it sounds like all is well to you?, as it seems to be to me! After putting in SIM card and trying to figure out updating APN settings, the above message came up “Carrier Settings Update” and I chose to update. I was having trouble figuring out APN on my own, so I thought this could be the trick.
This is all I’ve done and everything is working well. Online and MMS with pictures. So I plan to just not do anything else and be happy! Still have not downloaded APN settings separately, and after reading all the messages from others am concerned to try. TFW is at top of my phone and again all is working fine with WiFi turned off and with it turned on. BUT please appreciate your thoughts if sounds like need to do something else.
    Thank you.

      Hi Tricia,
You don’t need to do anything else. With a recent update many users do not need to install an APN profile or do the SIM Swap anymore. I haven’t had to for a month or so. It doesn’t work for everyone though so some people still need to set up data and MMS themselves. Make sure you can send & receive MMS to both iPhone and non iPhone users to make sure you are really testing MMS. Also, if you your ATT contract was up or you paid the ETF make sure to get ATT to unlock your iPhone for you. While you are currently able to use you iPhone if it is locked. It’s your phone, and it has more value unlocked. MAybe six months down the line, T-Mobile gets some super competitive deals and we will all want to switch.

I recommend you don’t accept any updates to your phone without checking smartphonematters.com first to see if they are safe.

That you for taking the time to come back and comment.

Thank you Bob. Is there a limited time you have to Unlock your phone? Cannot get through to AT&T and the online request was denied. Looks like will have to go visit a store. Thank you again

Thanks for this! It worked for me! I have an ATT iPhone 4s on straight talk and did the carrier update and immediately regretted it when it dropped from 4g to 3g. The speed test confirmed it. I used itunes 11.1.3.8 to try this downgrade method on windows, but it did not work. I tried it on another computer using itunes 11.1.0 and it worked. (When trying to open the file, I had to select .ippc files in the dropdown box). After install, I reset all settings and the 4G reappeared. I had to restart the phone to get the 4G speed.

    Hi Bob,

I have an iPhone 4S that a little over a year ago I put on Straight Talk. Before the TFW 15.6 Carrier Update all had been working using the AT&T 15.5 and the sim swap. My ST Sim is about 18 Months old and is a cut down standard sim from the summer of 2012. Which I used in my Original iPhone before I got the 4S. After the TFW 15.6 update things worked well for a while until I suddenly lost MMS, I was able to send but not receive. I haven’t gotten any MMS in the last 3 weeks. And 2 days ago it was mentioned to me that I didn’t respond to a text, so I also haven’t been receiving SMS from some people. I figured I needed to restore my phone anyway, so I decided to run the TFW 15.7 update.

After this update I’m still not getting MMS even from another ST phone, but I can send to it. Should I buy a newer sim card from Straight Talk?

*** AT&T to Straight Talk iPhone 4s switch experience ***

Thanks for all this info Bob…great website. Thought I’d share my experience in case anyone else runs into what I did. I’ll try to keep it quick…

Porting over two phone numbers from AT&T to ST. Bought the BYOP program via the ST website. Phones are both locked AT&T iPhone 4s. Attempted to do the process online but the website errored out when entering my AT&T account info. Tried again but the service PIN was already used. Tried the other service PIN with same results. That left me with two useless service PINs and no progress. Tried chat, they told me to call in. So I had to call in to complete the process. After multiple times explaining I finally got a good CSR who ported both numbers and setup the two $45 service plans.

After updating the APN settings via the email instructions ST sent and accepting the carrier update we’re in business. Phones work, reg texts and reg picture texts work, mms and picture mms work, and data works. I do have the TFW 3G showing on my phone but my average data speeds are around 150ms ping, 3-6Mb down, 0.25Mb up.

Overall the process wasn’t exactly painless. I would’ve rather done everything online but customer service wasn’t too awful. Just glad I’m getting better service for $50 less a month. Good luck everyone!

Having the same issues as everyone else. Speeds are much slower since the carrier update. Tried restoring old back-ups of my phone but I still have the 15.7 update. Has anyone figured out how to revert back to the old carrier update?

  8. dylan says:

I just did it on an 4s 347ms ping 3.91 mbps dl 0.71 mbps ul

I recently did the update with my iPhone 4 and am experiencing nothing but bad…. mms messages don’t send or pics, some of the games I have are having me to download my current level and it won’t download, my browser is extremely slow, won’t play videos or takes forever to download, won’t update apps either… and can’t seem to find a fix or I’m not searching the right aspect of this issue… Any help is greatly appreciated!! ~TotallyFrustrated

  10. scot says:

I did the dang carrier update and now when I run a speed test I get .87Mbps down and 1.04Mbps up. With a 190ping. Before I got 8 or 9 times faster and a shorter ping time.

P.s. Contacting ST support is unless and a waste of everyone time they read from a manual and barely can speak English.

I update my iPhone 4S on straight talk to the carrier update 15.7 and I now have 3G instead of 4G…my phone is running slower than usual..pleas tell me they are going to fix this.

  12. Jeff E says:

Ever since I switched my iphone4 from ATT to ST, data worked IF I loaded the correct profile (thanks to Bob for posting great instructions), but MMS never did. Today I installed TFW 15.7 when offered and data stopped working. thanks Again to Bob, I removed the profile, Reset Network Settings and rebooted. Now data and MMS work, and the speed seems decent. (we don’t have 4G yet)

  13. James says:

I’ve been working on my wife’s ATT compatible iPhone 4 with iOS 7.0.4. I installed the tfdata profile last week and got the data to work (we just switched to Straight Talk last week). However, the MMS didn’t seem to work. Remember, I’m a newbee at all this high tech stuff, but I sent her iPhone a picture text and it didn’t receive it. Then the carrier update came, I accepted the update, and the word “HOME” at the top switched to “TFW.” The other day, I got my T-Mobile micro sim cards in the mail and was preparing to do the sim card swap. I thought I’d try send her phone a picture text with the wi-fi off, and eureka….her iPhone received it. I thought I was dreaming. Then I took a pic with her iPhone and sent it via text to my Samsung Galaxy. Eureka, again. I received it as well. Thank God (and Bob of course) it’s working. Just to be sure, I had my sister send a picture text to my wife’s iPhone and she got it. I’ve stored the T-mobile sim cards in a container in case I need them in the future. However, as long as my wife is happy, I’m happy. Happy wife; Happy life.

How do I downgrade this? Called Customer Service, and they are absolutely of no help!

  15. Chad says:

I installed the carrier update, now my phone says 3G. While my SMS and data work fine and I can send MMS messages, I still cannot receive them. I have a locked AT&T Iphone 4s with an old ST sim. Any help would be appreciated? Thanks.
