I Updated My iPhone to iOS 7.0.4 and Straight Talk and Net10 Wireless Are Working Fine

Photo Nov 14, 6 54 05 PM

Just a quick post to let you know that I was able to update my iPhone 5 to iOS 7.0.4 without any problems using Straight Talk or Net10. My data and MMS appear to be working fine. My Carrier Profile is still TFW 15.6 and I did not need to change any APN or Cellular Data Network settings.

      Hi suresh,
You’ll need to find a 3rd party unlocking service. I have never used one myself. All my phones were ether purchased unlocked or unlocked by the US carrier after the contract was up. Maybe check the howardforums. You might find some recommendations over there.

    Bob,

Couple of quick questions if you would, please:

    1. What is the easiest way to check to see if MMS/ picture messaging is working on my iphone 4? Does it work off of wifi or is it via satcom only?
    2. It seems my iphone 4 may have started doing these things on its own. Is this possible?

    Thanks and happy holidays.

    Michael

  3. Hey Bob,

I’ve been avoiding updating my iPhone (using Straight Talk) to iOS 7 because I thought it would screw everything up, but since I kept getting “SIM card not installed” messages and constantly had to restart my phone, I figured it was time.

Now nothing works. No voice calls, no texting, no data. Nothing works unless I am using wifi. I get a “Welcome to Verizon Wireless” message if I try to call anyone. I reset the network settings and that did not help.

Any advice? What other information can I give you that would help?

    Thanks so much.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Brittany,
I don’t have direct experience with ST Verizon network phones(I assume you bought the phone from ST).

      Here is what I’d try
reset the phone by holding home and lock buttons until the phone restarts
test voice, text messages, data, and pic messages
if it doesn’t work, try dialing *22890
test voice, text messages, data, and pic messages

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Hi Bob,

Neither of those things worked. It is not a Straight Talk iPhone, but an unlocked Verizon phone. It came with a “GPP” SIM card and I bought the ST SIM card to go along with it.

I still have my activation card and serial number from ST that came with the ST SIM card, but do I need to reactivate it?

        • Did I undo the unlock when I reset the Network settings? I’m so lost.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hey Britney.
Ok. You bought this iphone and it came with a GPP sim? What exactly did you get with this? Was there a reset sim or any other items for the GPP? One possibility is that your GPP is not compatible with ios 7. I think it might be possible to update your GPP for ios 7.

I have never used a GPP before, but. I can try to help you. We have some readers who have used them, succesfully so I think we could figure this out.
Let me know if you want some help.

          Regards
          Bob

          • Bob,

I bought it off of eBay, it was already unlocked but came with a GPP interposer (I was using the interposer with the Straight Talk sim previously) and a GPP SIM in case I had to reset my phone and redo the unlock. That card says “iOS 7″ on it. Through all the research I did last night, it seems that the GPP unlock will not work with iOS 7 and I have to either use a patch and only get voice calls or wait for GPP to put out a new SIM card that will work. (mostly all I’ve found are articles and videos warning people not to update to iOS 7 if they use GPP)

Can you recommend another way to re-unlock my phone if GPP is no longer an option? For the time being, I am trying to transfer my service to an old straight talk phone so I can at least have a working phone.

            Thanks. I appreciate the responses!

            -Brittany

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Brittany,
I did a little googling and it doesn’t see like the GPP is working with iOS 7. There seems to be a patch to get voice working. There was a guy who sells these things, he replied the last time you commented here. I’ll try emailing him.

            Regards
            Bob

I have Migrated From Service provider VODAFON TO AIRTEL-INDIA My OS is 7.0.4 and I* use cellphone i5. My outgoing SMS has stoipped Working.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi V K,
I don’t know. Most people on this site are looking for help with data and MMS, not SMS. Also, I am US based and do not have experience with India’s mobile operators. You can try a hard reset. Hold the Home and lock buttons until the phone resets. Test again. You can go into Settings and do a Reset All Settings, see if that helps.

Try testing your SIM in a different phone and see if SMS works. Try a different SIM in your phone and see if SMS works.

You may need to call your operator for support.
      Regards
      Bob

I just wanted to chime in as I have been using this guide for almost all of my needs when it comes to straight talk and their sim program for iphones. I started using straight talk a year ago with their old sim and had to do all of that sim swapping, but I could get it to work everytime. My friends got wind of how I was saving so much money and they wanted in. At that time, Straight Talk stopped selling their sims and the only place I could find them was on ebay. So I thought my friends were out of luck, but then Straight Talk started selling them again and so I did a lot more digging. I found that the new sims were supposed to be tailor made for BYOP and the apn settings were changed so the new sims would work without “sim swapping”. I didn’t believe it, until my friend brought me her locked iphone 4 and wanted in on the straighttalk deal. So we ordered a new att straighttalk sim from ST($7). when it arrived, we put in the sim card and tried to send a picture message and a group message and it was a no go. I don’t remember where, but somewhere on this forum, there are three links to apn’s directly from ST. I went to the WAP link and downloaded the profile and installed it on her locked iphone 4 and it worked right away and we did nothing more. I was very shocked and so we tried it multiple times and each time a picture message was sent over 3G (iphone 4) to iphone 4s (4g with TFW in the upper corner). I can’t explain why, but it worked and so I won’t mess with it anymore. Thanks Bob and all commenters!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Mattk,
I am glad to hear that you have been using smartphonematters.com. Please do refer you friends to the site. I am trying to provide enough information for consumers to make an informed choice about moving to prepaid service.

To clarify, Straight Talk has always offered BYOP SIM cards, and the APN settings are not part of the SIM card. Your iPhone detects your SIM, decides what network you are using, and sets the APN settings based on the appropriate Carrier settings stored on the phone. Recently, Straight Talk got their own carrier profile for the iPhone, TFW 15.6. You may have noticed your network name change from HOME to TFW. As part, of that carrier update, your iPhone will pre populate your Cellular Data Network settings with the values: tfdata, mms3.tracfone.com, and http://mms-tf.net. You can see this is you SIM swap, you’ll no longer see the ATT values after you put your Straight Talk SIM back in your phone. If the APN above that matches your Straight Talk account, your phone just might work without an APN profile or SIM swapping. If your account is new, your account should have tfdata. Older accounts still use the wap.tracfone and att.mvno APNs but Straight Talk has been updating customers recently.

The new settings don’t always work for everyone using the tfdata APN. It seems that TFW 15.6 is for iOS 7 users, I have yet to hear a report of TFW 15.6 being pushed to iOS 6. So it’s APN profiles and SIM swap for iOS 6 crowd. Finally, TFW 15.6 just doesn’t seem to work for random customers even if they are running iOS 7 and their account uses the tfdata APN. I don’t know why.

      Regards
      Bob

        Bob,

I currently bought an iphone4 off ebay and jailbroke it through Pangu. I am running ios7.1.2 and when I go to my Cellular setting, there is no option to access my cellular device network to rest my APN. Any thoughts on what to do? Do I need to factory restore the phone and try to jailbreak it again? Thanks!

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi John,
Jailbreaking your iPhone isn’t enough. Once your phone is jailbroken, you need to install an app that lets you access the Cellular Data Network Settings. Take a look at this
          http://www.itweakios.com/apps/blog/show/40716202-carrier-update-hack-for-ios-7-0-x

You shouldn’t really need to jail break your phone to get data and MMS working though. Are you using the ATT SIM? Look up your APN Settings here
if you APN is tfdata, your phone should be set up automatically.
          http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/support/apn

Let me know what it says your APN settings are.

          Regards
          Bob

          • JohnA says:

Good info. Do I find the APN settings on the Straight Talk website link or is it found on the actual iphone itself? One more thing,I spoke with an AT&T member and they said that because my phone is not working is because it is locked. He didn’t see it in the system, just used deductive reasoning from my situation. He also said the only way to unlock the phone is with the original owner. Is this true? I don’t want to fall into a scam. I tried to see what http://iphone-unlocker-pro.com would do and they said my phone was unlockable. Your thoughts on the whole unlocking business and if that is my problem and can I fix it or have to buy another unlocked phone?

  7. Brittney says:

Omg, thank you so much! Straighttalk couldn’t solve the issue. I am so thankful I ran across this! Once again thank you and may many blessing come your way.

  8. Lori N says:

I just want to thank you as well!!! Resetting my network settings fixed everything. I was freaking out man, freaking out! Thank you! BTW I have straight talk with an iPhone 4S that recently changed the carrier name to TFW for whatever reason and I updated to iOS 7.0.4. I was living without picture messaging for a while, but this reset even gave that back to me. The day is saved! :D

  9. jimmieanna says:

Amazing, you’re genius, this fix worked for me too! Yay! I did not have to go any further than the “reset network settings” part, after that, my data returned. I have a iphone 4 and the new ios 7.0.4. Thanks so much!

  10. Lyndsy says:

My data stopped working this morning and I’ve been putting off updating to IOS 7.0.4 but since my data stopped working I decided to update the phone. My data is still not working. I use unlockit.co.nz on my iPhone 4s. The phone was originally an AT&T phone, and now I go through Straight Talk. My regular text and phone service still work.I did receive that weird text this morning too. Should I delete the profile from the general settings and start over? Do I need to write anything down from what I have currently to use on the new profile? Thanks for the help!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Lyndsy,

      Remove any APN profiles.
      Go into settings
      Do a reset network settings
Test data and mms if it doesn’t work
Do a reset hold the lock and home buttons until the phone reboot
      Repeat the test
If data doesn’t work, follow my guide and install the tfdata profile first.

I had the same problem, data & mms quit working, so I went ahead & installed ios update, but still no data or mms. I spent countless hours yesterday trying all sorts of tricks and ‘re-trying things that had works in the past….no luck. I then contacted ST they had me do several things that didn’t work and in the end, I was told that there must have been an encryption or something in the update from Apple that is keeping my data and mms from working but the update was so new they didn’t have a fix yet! So I was bummed for a day, then I ran across your threads and the first thing I followed from one of your comments WORKED! I honestly didn’t have my hopes up when I started to do the initial test, so you can probably imagine how excited I was (everybody in the house knew)…when it did work. I now have my data and mms working. I apologize for the long comment:) I do want to finish by saying thank you for your help and the time you put into helping people with problems we can’t solve with our phones. Most of what actually works for people, in solving problems w/their devices, comes from people like you…NOT from customer service.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Carlos,
Good question. I have two newer SIMs. Most people seem to be have the older ones. We would need more info to conclude its a SIM problem though

I have the old sim.. Im waithing for my new one to come in.. Ama give it a try wen i get home tonight to see if those setting u said work do Ill let u kno if those work for me

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Carlos,
You can try adding the MMS UA profile in the settings. See if that works.
If it doesn’t try changing that mms3 to mms2.
      Regards
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hey Carlos,
One reader reported this working for him. Would you like to give it a try?

      New APN settings (that work):
      APN–tfdata
MMS–tfdate (Edit by Bob — I’m guessing he meant tfdata)
      MMSC–http://mms-tf.net
      MMS Proxy–66.209.11.33:80
      MMS Max Message Size 1048576
I also filled out the last line, not sure if necessary:
      MMS UA Prof URL–http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

after the IOS 7.0.4 update I no longer see wifi hotspot. It disappeared!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Debra,
Hmm. Thank is agood point. Straight talk doesn’t support personal hotspot. Mine never worked, did yours? My guess is that it’s hidden when you put the straight talk sim in your phone. I’ll have to try sticking a tmobile sim in and see if it reappears.

Is this causing you a problem?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Debra says:

No. I just remember having it before the update but I don’t know if it worked. I just got an iPad and would have liked the option but for me, I mostly use it at home with my wifi.
I guess If you want to use the full features of an iPhone, you gotta pay for it and go back to AT&T or t-mobile etc. thx for the quick reply.

  16. Orangeman says:

Ok I here you updated to 7.0.4 with your iPhone then tell me this how are you getting your mms to work??! With ST & Net10 everyone is having trouble receiving mms. Please explain, give the correct APN settings or something.

I am very appreciated thank you

  18. Christy says:

My nephew has Straight Talk over at&t on a iPhone 4 that he updated to ios 7.0.4. The carrier is version 15.6. His data and mms stopped working. I found this thread and deleted the old APN. I did not install a new APN. Everything is now working with no new APN. My question is why is it working without an APN? Thanks!

    • Christy says:

I meant to say he has no APN Profile. I did figure out that he can’t receive mms messages from a non-iPhone but he can do everything else without the apn profile.

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Christy,
The problem with Straight Talk and the iPhone in the past has been that your iPhone is designed to program the APN and MMS information automatically. And since it does that, ATT decided the phone should hide the Cellular Data Network settings, well, because it was set for you and there is no need for you to mess it up.

The problem is that you iPhone thinks your ST ATT SIM, is for ATT, and programs the settings for ATT, not straight talk. A recent update, this TFW 15.6, fixes that, sort of, sometimes, for some people.

When you put your ST SIM in now, it gets programmed for a set of Straight Talk APN and MMS values. If those match your values, well then, life got better for you. If you have some of the alternative values, well you have to install the correct profile.

For some people, even if they values match, they still have problems. I don’t know why. Sometimes doing a network reset helps, sometimes you still need the profile or to SIM swap.

Try the network reset, if it doesn’t fix mms, try the SIM swap (if you want MMS)

Let me know how it goes,
        Regards
        Bob
