Hi Corey,
I don’t have the Chinese Android 4.2.2. phone myself but I do know the APN settings that Straight Talk uses. I am willing to try to help you. I can’t promise we will be able to get it to work. It also may require a little effort on your part. I set up this web page so we can keep track of the steps.
Leave a comment here if you would still like some help.

Bob

fortunately I did not have to worry about it too long. I had the phone about a month and I could not get H or H+. The phone started malfunctioning at that point. When calls were finished I was unable to hang up, the screen would freeze. That is very annoying especially when getting voice mail… The only way to get the screen back was to reboot the device. That was happening a few times a day initially, then 8 times a day, etc.
I wish you luck with the phone. For picture messages… sorry, cant help.

  2. Does the Cubot Dual Core use 2 of the same Sims card? Please help me with this, Thank You

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Sabrina,
Your Cubot may have two sim slots, but it will work with one sim. The second sim slot is if you have a second phone line. Your example, one number for work and one number for personal use.

If I remember correctly, I have had a couple of readers with this phone. You might find you only get slow 2G data. Many of these inexpensive Chinese made phone are not fully compatible with US cellular networks.

Let me know how it goes for you.
      Regards
      Bob

  3. Adam says:

yes, i tried that…. still an E at the signal bars, not an H

  4. Adam says:

Yes, this looks like the vendor, without verifying.
When I pull up mobile network settings it comes up with 5 options.
    Data Connection
    3G service
    Preferred Network
    Access Point Names
    Network Operators

For Data Connection it is set to ATT
For 3G service, there is an option to enable 3G but nothing really happens when I try to enable.

the vendor sent specific settings as if there was a way around the whole difficulty. It did not work.

I just bought the iNew Android phone Model:V3 on amazon…I have Straight Talk and it worked fine when I installed the Sim card but only with Wi-Fi….after trail and error I was able to figure it out. I couldn’t find where to change the APN settings….then I followed the instructions that came with the phone and was able to figure it out.
*You can access the APN this way:
1)go to settings—->>>click on More…—>>>go to mobile networks—->>>click on AccessPointNames…..my phone had Cingular( I only had one choice)I doubled clicked Cingular and it allowed me to make the changes the vendor send with the phone….I made the changes that were recommended….once done hit the return button until you reached the home screen….once at home screen repeated the steps:
go to settings—->>>click on More…—>>>go to mobile networks—->>>click on AccessPointNames(and this time I had two choices(Cingular/ST tf data)I picked ST tf data and then I saw the letter H next to the 3G on upper right corner……and now I have Data….Please made sure you make these changes with the Wi-Fi turned OFF!!!!!!! Good Luck.

      Hi Adam,

I do not know how much I would pay. I guess I would look around for deals. If it does not work 4g then I guess it is not really worth it. I look forward to a day when the super thin, really techy, packed with features phone is available. any suggestions.

  6. Adam says:

    Hey Bob,
What about the Lenovo K900? will that work with Straight Talk?
    Adam

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Adam,
It looks like it will, but I can’t say for use. It would It would be a 3G phone though. Just curious how much would you pay for that phone. If data speed is important to you, I’d still recommend a phone that supports 4G LTE.

  7. Adam says:

    Thanks Bob,
I bought the phone off Amazon. There are reviews there testifying that it works. I talked to the seller who sent specific APN settings. He says he has sold hundreds and they work. He says he uses one and gets signal. There are no settings that will make it work?
    Adam

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Adam,
The phone does work. It’s just 2G. Did he say it gets 3G on ATT? You can check in the settings and see if you can set it to connect to WCDMA only. I get this question a lot with Chinese imports. I am just looking up the specs as published on the web. The specs show limited 3G support. It might work in some areas better than others depending on the availability of 3G on the 850 Mhz frequency. Check your Settings under Wireless& Networks->Mobile Networks. What is your preferred network type? What options do you have?
      Regards
      Bob

    Hi Bob,

I bought a Studio Blu 5.0 SII running 4.2.2 using an at&t sim card on straight talk. after putting in the apn settings on straight talk, I was able to receive texts but no one is getting mine. so I have reset my phone, can you help me to get this phone working right?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Michael,
Do you mean SMS text messages or MMS picture messages? The APN settings are only for data and MMS.

Does your phone have an options to set the APN type? I’d try setting it to default, mms, wap

      Hello,
I have the iNew V3, Chinese android 4.2.2 using ATT sim card on straight talk. I tried using the APN settings from the vendor. I have connection, but only 2g. I paid for the first month service with the international plan – was not able to call or text internationally, could not get a 3 or 4g signal anywhere. Something is wrong with the settings.
      Can anyone help?
      Adam

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Adam,
Unfortunately, the problem is the phone. Many of these Chinese android phones have great specs and low prices. The problem is that they have limited compatibilit with US GSM cellular networks. I looked up your phone it supports 2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz3G and WCDMA 850/2100MHz.

This phone doesn’t support 4G HSPA+ or 4G LTE. And it doesn’t support 3G in the US. As for the international plan. Straight Talk’s International calling works like a calling card. You can’t dial direct. You have to call an access number then dial your international number. You can automate this with some dialer apps. I don’t know about the issues with the international MMS.

My recommendation. Return the phone if you can or sell it on eBay. Buy a new BLU or Motorola unlocked android phone. Decide if you want 4G LTE. Phones that support LTE cost a little more. You may also want to choose a prepaid plan that supports directly dialing international numbers. Some prepaid services support this.

Let me know if you need help with that.

        Regards
        Bob

I have a Samsung ZTE Savvy with Straight Talk. I was only able to send a video a few seconds long once or twice. After that a msg said to use MMS video when recording. How do I do that?

  11. LS Andrews says:

I have the same Chinese android GT I9500(galaxy s4),Im also with straighttalk. I’m having problems as well downloading MMS and also I’m having problems getting internet. I can only get Internet threw WiFi. Please help me, this has been a nightmare for me!!

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi LS,
Do you have a link to where you bought this phone so I can check the specs. In general, the issue with many inexpensive Chinese Android phones is that they don’t support 3G data in the US. Sometimes you can get them to work with 2G data, but that is really slow. Send me a link to the specs and I’ll see what it supports. Oh, and typically, your MMS usually wont work if you data isn’t working.
      Regards
      Bob

Hi bob I have an HTC droid DNA – originally Verizon obviously – can’t get mms tho work on ST ??? any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Jason,
Did you activate the phone on the Straight Talk verizon network? Or are you using one of their SIM cards?
      Regards
      Bob

    • jason says:

Hi Bob this is Jason- I am using an at&t SIM but I would prefer to use Verizon as the service is much better in my area – but I do not know how to go about that. I would at very least like to get the at&t service to work better. Any tips or suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

      • Bob Thompson says:

        Hi Jason,
You may be able to use your DNA on the Straight Talk Verizon network. Be advised, that you will not get Verizon’s 4G LTE network though. Verion doesn’t let any prepaid wireless company, even Verizon prepaid use their LTE network.

If that is acceptable, the next step is to see if your phone can be activated on Straight Talk’s verizon network. Straight Talk and Verizon have business agreements that prevent certain model phones from being activated by Straight Talk. You can check if you can activate your phone here.
        http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/h/byop/registration

I am not sure of the exact steps but what you want to do is the equivalent of transferring your existing Straight Talk service to a new phone. Your service is current;y associated with your ST ATT SIM, you want to transfer that to a new phone, which is your Droid. If your droid is eligible, you’ll need to pay a $15 fee to activate it on Straight Talk’s network (instead of buying a SIM)

Let me know what if you plan to do it. I’ll try to help you. I’d like to write an article about the steps.
        Regards
        Bob

I have tried everything. And Straight talk is useles.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Bev,
Well, why don’t we start from the beginning.
What type of phone do you have? What is the model number and what verison of Android are you using?
Do you know if you are using Straight’s ATT or Straight Talk’s TMobile SIM?
Did you set up the APN?
Are you saying that your Cellular Data doesn’t work at home?
      does it work other places?
      Regards
      Bob

I have the inew v3 a Chinese smartphone but I am only able to get edge speeds with straight talk and have seen where others get HSDPA+ with the same phone

  16. I have a Chinese Android 4.2.2 with ATT Sim card on straight talk service. I get text messages but can’t send or receive mms pic messages. And the internet bar has a G instead of an E or 3G. Can you help with the APN settings?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Tracy,
The G means you have a GPRS connection, which is a 1 G data connection. It’s painfully slow. Do you have a link to the phone you bought? MAny of these phones have very limited 2G and 3G support. It may be this phone isn’t very compatible with the ATT network. Changing the APN isn’t going to help with that.

Let me know if you have a link to where you bought the phone from.
      Regards

Hi I am using a cubot phone with straight talk bring your own phone and I am having problems with both my internet spee (very slow) and texting (I am able to send and receive text messages to some numbers but not to other numbers). Can you please help?

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi Christy,
The comments on this site are moderated so you don’t need to leave the same comment several times.

You mentioned that your Cubot phone is slow. I suspect you are only getting a 2G data connection. Look in the status bar on your phone and I bet you’ll notice a 2G or an E indicating a slow 2G data connection. I don’t know which Cubot model you have or if you are using the Straight Talk AT&T network-compatible SIM or the Straight Talk T-Mobile network-compatible SIM. But I suspect your phone has limited compatibility with the network you are trying to use it on.

These phones are relatively inexpensive because they offer very limited support for 3G data networks. Changing SIMs might help, depending on where you live.

As for the second issue. If you can’t send regular text messages, you’ll need to call straight talk. If you are having trouble with group text messages or sending picture messages you’ll need to set up your APN correctly.

  32. Kevin says:

I’m late to the party maybe, but I’m having some similar issues. I have the BLU Studio 5.5 with Android 4.2, and I’ve used the settings laid out by ST along with the APN type being set to include wap and mms. My data works perfectly and I am able to send MMS, but I cannot download them. I just get an option to download when someone sends me a picture, and then it errors out saying it will try again later.

I have followed all of those steps, and contacted Straight Talk support regarding the issue. I have not found a combination of settings that work over the last 4 days. To say that I’m frustrated doesn’t do it justice.

        • Bob Thompson says:

          Hi Kevin,
Yes. It is frustrating. I am setting up a new Straight Talk BYOP tonight and I have the same problem. Did you call Tracefone Executive resolution? I have one reader who swears by them.
          Regards

          • Kevin says:

I haven’t yet… I’ve been toying with the idea of activating on a go phone, but I don’t know if it’s my BLU Studio 5.5 or the carrier that is giving me troubles.

          • Bob Thompson says:

            Hi Kevin,
It’s hard to know with your particular problem. Many people are having problems receiving mms with straight talk. There is no doubt a problem with receiving mss on straight talk. But if you goole search for the problem about getting an mms but not being able to download the picture, you see that many android users have this problem on other carriers too.

I set up another straight talk account this week and it has the same problem. Tried the sim in both my iphone and my android phone, and I know mms work with those phones with my other sim.

I am not sure what to tell you. If you need mms you might want to try net10, AIO, pay go,or h20. These all use the att network. I spent some time trying to fix my new account but it is t working yet. Fortunately, I don’t need mms myself.

You could try transferring to a new sim. I also saw a comment on the site that one readers phone started working after a new billing cycle.

Let make know how you make out. I am going to be reviewing some of these other services soon.
            Regards

      Hi,
Straight talk uses three different apns: tf data, att.mvno, and wap.tracfone. Try each APN and see if you can get data working. Don’t worry about mms yet. Try powering off you phone before trying each APN.

    • Bob Thompson says:

      Hi David,
MMS on Straight Talk is a tricky thing. First, you need to find the correct settings for your account. Then if they don’t work, sometimes you can tweak them.
We will have to walk through some permutations.

Did you try changing Mms proxy mms3.tracfone.com to Mms proxy mms2.tracfone.com?

If that does not work, try
      Try

Straight Talk uses three APNs. tfdata, att.mvno, and wap.tracfone. Do you know how to set the APN? If not ask? If you do, try each of the three for the APN field only. Set the APN, reboot the phone, turn off wi-fi, and test data. Can you do that or do you need more help. Once you find the correct data APN you can focus on getting MMS to work.
      Regards,
      Bob

    Hi Lauren,
There are many things still left to try. I just pointed to the obvious. I moved our comments to the BLU Life page.

Use the link to the Straight Talk on this page to make sure you are using the correct settings.

    1. Make sure you remove all the other APNs on the APNs page
    2. try adding an APN type. Try default, internet, wap and is that doesn’t work default, internet, supl

Many people get MMS working by changing the MMS Proxy and MMSC.
