Straight Talk Wireless Is Selling Nano SIMs in Now!

Straight Talk Wireless offers an affordable service plan for smartphone users. One of the problems that iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5 users have with Straight Talk is that they don’t sell the right size SIM for our phones. The iPhone 5 models use a nano SIM. Straight Talk sells standard SIMs and micro SIMs. In order to use Straight Talk with the iPhone 5, you have to cut a SIM to fit in your phone. It isn’t hard to cut a SIM, but you shouldn’t have to.

I bought a new Straight Talk Wireless Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) Activation Kit at a Walmart in Massachusetts in December. It came with four SIMS:

  1. an AT&T network-compatible standard SIM
  2. an AT&T network-compatible micro SIM
  3. a T-Mobile network-compatible standard SIM
  4. a T-Mobile network-compatible micro SIM

Starting in December though,  several Smartphonematters readers were telling me they were finding nano SIMs in their BYOP Activation Kits. I went to Walmart and asked about it. The only employee in the store who knew anything about Straight Talk said he didn’t think the kits came with nano SIMs. You can order standard SIMs and micro SIMs from the Straight Talk web site, but not nano SIMs.

In March, I bought two more BYOP Activation Kits. I bought one while visiting North Carolina and another in Massachusetts.  These BYOP Activation Kits had nanos SIMs! (Note:  the SIMs where back incorrectly, I will write another post about that)

  1. an AT&T network-compatible combination standard & micro SIM
  2. an AT&T network-compatible nano SIM
  3. a T-Mobile network-compatible combination standard & micro SIM
  4. a T-Mobile network-compatible nano SIM

The combination standard & micro SIM can be used as a standard SIM or a micro SIM. If you need the micro SIM, you simply punch it out of the perforated standard SIM.

I compared the three BYOP Activation Kits.  The kits do not explicitly list which SIMs are included in the package. It would be nice if they did. The packaging is exactly the same, the bar code, the SKU numbers, all identical. There was one difference. The BYOP Activation Kits  I bought in March with the nano SIMs had a small sticker on the front that said  “SEE NEW ACTIVATION INSTRUCTIONS AT STBYOP.COM”

So if you are an iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, or iPhone 5 user and you want to switch to Straight Talk, look for the Bring Your Own Phone activation kit with the red and white sticker and you may find a nano SIM like I did.
