A reader Michelle writes,
I bought an unlocked iphone 4s on ebay for my teenage daughter’s Christmas present. We are trying to get it up and running. We have phone service, but no data. We have tried everything on your site as well as several others. Please help. We have not even attempted MMS yet…we figured we should get the data running first.
Thank you so much.
OK. Let’s see if we can help you get this phone up and running so that this will truly be a Merry Christmas.
Let’s start with the iPhone you bought. You said it’s unlocked. Do you know whether its a AT&T (GSM) model or the Verizon(CMDA) model. What is the model number on the back on the phone. I am assuming you have the AT&T model and that you are not using a GPP SIM adapter.
Next your SIM. Your Straight Talk service uses either the ATT or T-Mobile network depending on which Straight Talk SIM you used. The AT&T SIM is the better choice. It comes on a blue card. If you are using the AT&T SIM, do you know that AT&T has reliable service in the area you live?
Moving on, what version of iOS and what carrier is your phone running? Go to Settings->General->About. What is your Version and Carrier?
Now, Turn Wi-Fi off. Use Safari to try and load a web page. What do you see in your status bar? Do you see a network name of HOME or TFW? How many bars do you see? Do you see a network speed indicator? It might be 4G, 3G,or E.
Please answer all the questions above. Before you do try this.
Remove any installed APN profiles in settings. If you don’t know how see:

Go to Settings->General->Reset. Tap Reset Network Settings.
After this, test data.
Let me know how it goes.
