    Hello
Can someone please help me with mine. I recently bought an iPhone 6s unlocked straight from apple and I’m using straight talk. My previous phone was an S3 and now I’m transferring my stuff to my new iPhone 6s, the problem is I am not getting 4G LTE. Instead it is showing 3G, and I dont know why. On my old phone I get 4G though. Can you pleaseeeee help me with this, because if it won’t work then I’ll just return the phone.

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

      Hi Maria,
Do you know which Straight Talk network your old S3 was using? Do you know which Straight Talk network your 6s is using? When you sign up for Straight Talk your phone uses either their ATT, Verzion, Sprint or Mobile networks?

      • Maria | | Reply

I am using the AT&T sim from straight talk.

I just came back from the city and I did get an LTE there but when I came back in my hometown it turn into 3G back again. I was thinking probably b/c of my location, but it’s strange tho b/c when I had my s3 it would show up on my phone that I am getting 4G here in my hometown not 3G. Ugh I dont know what’s wrong!

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

          Maria,
Did your S3 show 4G or 4G LTE? your iPhone is probably getting a 4G HSPA connection at your home. the status bar will show 3G though.
You may find your phone eventually gets an LTE connection. You should also consider using speediest to see how fast your connection really is.

Hi, wondering if anybody can help with a data and mms issue with my iPhone 4s, version 6.0.
I use sim swap method. After manually entering APN settings, everything works great but after couple of days my phone looses the settings and I have to re-enter the settings again. It’s becoming really annoying to do that every couple days.

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

      Hi Gene,
That was one of the problems with the SIM swap. sometimes the phone’s APN would revert back to ATT. The SIM swap was just a work around, so, we all were lucky it worked at all.

Is there a reason you are still on iOS 6? with iOS 7,8, and 9 Straight Talk just works(in most cases) without all the hassle of the SIM swap.

There is one thing you can check. Go into Settings General About. What is the Carrier for your phone? Don’t install an update if it prompts you to do so…

      • Gene | | Reply

        Thank you for the reply.

Couple years back, I bought my smartphone after finding out that I could use it with Straightalk. Learned about sim swap method and everything worked great up until several months ago. Thought it was a temporary issue but realizing it is not, since it persists for some time now. So now, I’m forced to find another method that will work with my phone.

The reason I am still on 6.0 version is because it stated not to update the phone or the sim swap will not work. Everything worked great for me so I didn’t have a need in an upgrade.
So you suggest, I upgrade my phone and download APN settings from straighttalk and it will work fine again?

        Carrier is AT&T 13.0

Bob Thompson, have received my reply to questions?

        • Gene | | Reply

          you* your*

      • Gene | | Reply

The reason I was still on iOS 6 was because one of the instructions for sim-swap was not to update the phone or sim-swap will not work.
I had no need for an update and everything worked great up until now, so I just kept everything the way it was.

Carrier for my phone is AT&T 13.0.

So you suggest, I should just update my phone to the latest update and install APN settings from Staighttalk?

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

          Gene,
I can’t promise you you won’t have any problems with your phone after you update.
once you do update, your carrier with be tfw 22 and you won’t need to sim swap or install APN profile straight talk.

If you go into settings on your iPhone does it tell you an update to iOS 9 is available?

          • Gene | |

iOS 8.4.1 is the only one that’s available.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi gene,
Which iPhone do you have? If a 4s or later I am guessing that you’ll update to 8.4.1 and then it will let you update to iOS 9. Or you could stay on 8.4.1.

If you backup your phone and update your data and mms should just work. Sometimes people report issues, but not like I’m the iOS 6 days when I’d get the sim swap article was the most popular on this site.

If you update, make sure to backup first.

          • Gene | |

Thank you. I will try what you suggested, have nothing to loose either way.

I have a BLU Life One 4G LTE unlocked phone. I cannot get it to connect to the internet at my home. I have Xfinity from Comcast. When I enter my password it says connected and then I get a message “Authentication Problems”. The phone connects to public wifi and to the wifi at work. Can anyone help me?

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

      Hi,
Have you tried unplugging the router and plugging it back in?

      • Masilla Toppin | | Reply

Yes I have tried that, thank you. Still will not connect. I forgot to mention that the phone connects to the internet when I use my daughter’s Samsung S5 as a hot spot but, of course, that only works when she is at home. I am at my wits’ end. This is my first smartphone.

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

I did a Google search for “Authentication Problems” and apparently this is a common problem for with also sort of phones and tablets using the Android operating system. There are a lot of posts, but I did not see a clear solution.

Have you tried telling your phone to forget your home network, and then adding it back in? Start there.

I have an iPhone 5s that is unlocked from AT&T. My can text, mms, use the Internet etc but the bar at the top says 3G instead of LTE. I am running iOS 9.0.2. How do I get LTE to show up and get LTE speeds. Speed test shows 10.79 down and 1 up. Is that LTE?

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

      Hi Shane,
Sounds like your phone isn’t getting an LTE connection. You can’t force your phone to get an LTE connection, changing the APN doesn’t control your connection.

The LTE service may not be good in your area. You may find that if you go to a different location you’ll get an LTE connection. Your phone is probabally getting an HSPA+ connection. ATT calls this 4G, StraightTalk calls it 3G.

Your download speeds are faster than I sometimes get on LTE but the upload speed is slower. Search smartphonematters for “Grant”. I wrote a few articles about this very issue.

You didn’t mention what type of phone you have or what service you use. If you can see incoming calls I start by making sure your ringer volume is not turned all the way down or your phone isn’t muted.

I have an unlocked HTC one m7 and I am trying to make it work with straight talk. I had an iphone before and switched over the sim card. I went un and changed the apn settings, and everything works (other than my data is not even 3g, let alone 4g). The only thing that doesn’t work, other than having slow data, is my mms. I can’t send or receive picture messages. I can change my apn setting but my phone won’t let me change anything else, such as the proxy or mmsc. I’m sure I need to go in and edit those settings and then everything will be fine. Why is my phone letting me edit apn but not any of the other settings? There’s also nowhere for me to press edit or create a new apn profile. The only options are “save” and “discard”. Any help is greatly appreciate. Thank you!

My husband and I are both Straight Talk users, formerly both using Samsung phones with great success in Tallahassee. Recently, hubbie bought iPhone 5c at Walmart for Straight Talk. It generally has worked, but one day he was near downtown and could not call me on our land line or on my cell phone, or text me. Just now, he tried to text to my cell (with both of us at home) and his lovely new iPhone said my number (yes, it is all 10 digits) is invalid. Any idea why?

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

      Hi Donna,
I am not sure. Do you know if his new phone is using the Straight Talk ATT network? Do you know if people in Tallahassee use ATT? Is the service good there? Do you know which Straight Talk network your previous phones were using?

He can also try giving his phone a reset. see Resetting All Your iPhone’s Settings

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Delvin,
When you send picture messages using from iPhone to iPhone you need to be aware if they are being sent using MMS or iMessage. iMessage is apple only and uses your data connection to send the pictures. When you send a message from an iPhone to say an Android phone it uses MMS. MMS is the standard way to send pictures between phones.

See Understanding the Difference between MMS and iMessage on Your iPhone.

I recommend you see if you can send a picture to a friend that doesn’t use an iPhone and receive one back. then you’ll know MMS is working.

You can also go into Settings->Messages and see if you have the following turned on.

            iMessage
            Send a SMS
            MMS Messaging
            Group Messaging

I am not sure about the message to open Safari. You can send me a screen shot of that if you want me to look at it.

            Hi Delvin,
Ok. I understand now. You were quoting the instructions from gosmart. they are wrong. You don’t need to use safari to send mms picture messages. Use the messages app or the photos app.

Send an picture message to a friend with an Android phone and ask them to reply with a photo. If that works you know mms is working and then we can try to figure out why you can’t send to two people at the same time.

            Regards
