Can I Use The iPhone 7 or 7 Plus With Straight Talk?

A reader, Sara, recently asked me if she can buy the new iPhone 7 and use it with Straight Talk Wireless.

The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will work with Straight Talk Wireless or other prepaid wireless services but you may be better off waiting for Apple to start selling the SIM Free versions of the phone before buying.

Because the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were just released a couple of weeks ago, Straight Talk isn’t currently selling these phones. Take a look on straighttalk.com today and you’ll see they sell the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as well as the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. This means if you want to use the iPhone 7 with Straight Talk you’ll need to buy the phone someplace else and sign up for Straight Talk’s Bring Your Own Phone or BYOP plan.

The best option for buying an iPhone 7 is from Apple directly because they don’t sell the SIM free models yet it can be a little tricky. The SIM free model is unlocked, you’ll pay full price, but can use it with any carrier. If you watch the video you’ll see if you try to buy the iPhone 7 Plus, you’ll have a choice to buy the Verizon, AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile phones. Compare that to the iPhone 6s Plus which you can see comes is available for those four carriers plus in the SIM-free model for use with any carrier. Typically Apple when Apple starts selling a new model iPhone it can take a number of weeks before they start selling the SIM-free models.

If you don’t want to wait for the SIM-free model, you may be able to buy a full price iPhone 7 for one of the listed carriers and use it with Straight Talk. The Verizon iPhone 7 or 7 Plus is the best choice. The phone is unlocked and is compatible with the AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks that Straight Talk uses. The problem is that you won’t be able add the the phone to your cart online without providing your Verizon account information. You might be able to buy one in an Apple retail store, if they have the phone is stock when you visit. You won’t be able to buy online with store pickup.

The next best choice is the T-Mobile iPhone 7. You’ll have no problem buying one online and the full price T-Mobile phones are usually unlocked. I bought my iPhone 5s this way, and was able to activate it with Straight Talk without an issue. Be aware that the T-Mobile and AT&T iPhones will both work on the Straight Talk AT&T or T-Mobile networks, but the phone isn’t fully compatible with the Verizon network. If you try to buy thr AT&T phone online you’ll also need to provide your AT&T account information to complete the purchase.

Every year when Apple releases the new iPhones models there is always a lot of discussion and debate if the full price AT&T and T-Mobile iPhones are really unlocked and can be activated with a SIM from a different company. I haven’t bought an iPhone 7. From what I have heard, the T-Mobile phone is unlocked. The AT&T phone requires an AT&T SIM to activate it but once that is done, it will work with T-Mobile. If you buy a full price carrier phone make sure to understand the return policy.

If you take a look at the tech specs, you’ll see why the Verizon model is the best phone to buy. The iPhone 7 (A1660) and iPhone 7 Plus (A1778) support the CDMA network technology used by Verizon and Sprint. The iPhone 7 (A1778) and iPhone 7 Plus (A1784) do not support CDMA and are meant for the AT&T and T-Mobile network.

If you don’t care about the Verizon network the iPhone 7 (A1778) and iPhone 7 Plus (A1784) are fine. The SIM-free model phones will be the Phone 7 (A1660) and iPhone 7 Plus (A1778).

I hope this helps.

      Bobbie Jo,
First, you should never leave comments in all capital letters, it’s considered shouting.

Next, where did you buy the phone from? Was the phone sold as unlocked? What wad the exact error message you saw, and where did you see it?

I bought a brand new iPhone 7 from AT & T store in July this year. I’ve been using go phone prepaid but would like to switch to straight talk. More gb for same price. I bought a $45 card to try it out but can’t get it to work. Do I need to purchase a SIM card as well. No place to slide in phone. If I need to purchase, how do I add it to phone without a slot to insert. Sorry I’m not very iPhone savvy. Thanks

      Pam,
There is a SIM tray on the right side of the phone. It’s hard to see because its flush with the edge. You’ll need a SIM tray tool or paper clip to pop it out. After that, you’ll need Straight Talk ATT nano SIM. you can order one from straighttalk.com. Check out my video https://youtu.be/zolFOkD-dKc you’ll see how to remove snd insert a SIM in the iPhone at about 10:00 in.

Take some time to checkout smartphonematters.com, see my BYOP iPhone guide here How To Sign Up and Use Your iPhone 6 or 6s with Straight Talk Wireless

Thank you! Will I lose my contacts when I change the SIM card?

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

Your iPhone’s contacts should be stored directly in your iPhone not on the SIM card. Try removing your ATT SIM card from your phone. If the contacts are still in your phone after you do this, then there isn’t a problem.

Hello I brought my T-Mobile phone over to straight byop plan and it worked for only the first month. All of a sudden my phone says no service now and I just had an auto fill of 38$ from straight talk two days ago. I can’t get service with straight talk and does anyone know why?

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

If your phone says no service clearly there is a problem. First, I assume you were a tmobile customer and that their is t-mobile service where you live. Log into My Account on straighttalk.com and make sure it shows your phone / sim as active. Try removing and reinserting the SIM into the phone. Finally use the online chat feature on straighttalk.com and ask support what is going on. perhaps your SIM card is bad, or more likely their is a problem at their end.

I bought the 7plus and also bought straight from apple with the SiM free. How can I go about using it with the Verizon network?

      Adriana,

If you want to use the sim-free 7 Plus with Straight Talk’s verizon you’ll need to check the phone’s MEID to make sure its eligible. It should be. Take a look at this article How To Sign Up and Use Your iPhone 6 or 6s with Straight Talk Wireless. If your trying to transfer your existing service to the new iPhone 7 plus you can do that too.

If you want to use Verizon’s Prepaid wireless service, see How To Sign Up For Verizon Wireless Prepaid Bring Your Own Device Plan. Even if you are currently using Straight Talk’s Verizon network, I recommend you check out Verizon prepaid, at this time its a better deal. Its may cost a few dollars more, but you get faster data speeds, and can use their advanced features. If you have any more questions, just leave a reply.

I purchased a brand-new unlocked iPhone 7 from the Apple store in Orlando Florida. I also purchased a bring your own phone package from Walmart and I can tell you from experience and after 15 calls with straight talk the iPhone 7 will definitely not work with straight talk. Buyer beware. The tech-support is terrible at best.

      Hi Jeff,
If you bought the sim-free model iPhone 7 it should work with Straight Talk’s ATT ot Tmobile network. To use it with the straight talk Verizon network, the meid needs to be eligible.

Would you like some help with this? What problem did you have?
