LaTonya from YouTube asks….
Question I have is where do you use data? My kids have Tracfone. They are only 11 soon to be 12. This is their first phone. I always have them connected to WiFi. Help. I am doing the $15 plan for them at the moment. I was looking into the $20 unlimited. One daughter has two months of rollover minutes and text but the other doesn’t. I figure instead of add on do the $20 plan. What do you think?
This is a great question so I decided to answer it in both this article and in a YouTube video. Tracfone can be a great choice for parents that want to give their children a smartphone, but you’ll need to give some thought to how much service your kids need and how much you are willing to pay for. LaTonya’s kids are both pre-teens and have these are their first phones, they are using the phones with Wi-Fi. She did not say what phones they have but I’ll assume they are using either iPhones or Android smartphones. The two kids are currently on $15 per month plans.
Here first question was about where do you use cellular data? Smartphones will uses the internet when connected to the internet for watching videos and listening to streaming music. Many online games require the internet as does using SnapChat, Instagram, Facebook and other social media. Using Messages on the iPhone usesthe internet for texts and picture messages with other iPhones. At home, the phones can connect to the internet using wi-fi but when you don’t have Wi-Fi, you’ll need cellular data to connect to the internet.
LaTonya also wanted to know if the $20 plan with unlimited talk and text with 1GB of data was a better choice than the $15 plan the kids are currently using. As I said in the beginning this will really come down to how much service you want you provide for your kids and what you are willing to pay for. As a parent, you’ll need to set expectations for your kids phone usage. Do they need or do you want them to have unlimited talk and text messages or do you want them to have enough minutes and texts to call home, communicate with you and the family, and for emergencies. Next up, is cellular data. Tracfone plans include cellular data in either MB or GB and GB is 1000MB (more or less). You can add data as needed for $10 for 1GB. Data does not expire. Given that they use Wi-Fi at home, how much do you want them using the internet outside the home. For example, do you want them to be able to watch YouTube outside the house. These are parenting decisions.
Once you decided your expectations for how you expect your kids to use their phones, decide how much you are willing to spend. Two $20 plans for the kids is $480 per year. Two kids on the $125 per year plan is $250, or $230 less. The will have less talk, text, and data of course with the $125 per year plan but you’ll be spending a lot less about $10.50 per line per month. You can add data and texts to these plans as needed. In the video I go into a more detailed price breakdown.
If you decide that you want to go with the $20, $25, or $30 plan you may also want to consider getting you the kids and other family members on a family plan with another prepaid or postpaid carrier. This might be an issue as you would likely not be able to use their current phones with a different carrier.
I hope this helps.
