For some reason, when porting a landline over to Tracfone on an iPhone 6 with latest iOS, I cannot set up the voicemail. It simply fails, erro ring out, even after a reset. Any ideas? Thanks.

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

Try long pressing 1 on in the phone’s dialer. Note if you are using Tracfone’s ATT network you will get regular voicemail not visual voicemail. With Tracfone’s Verizon network, you might get Visual Voice Mail. Also do you have cellular data and picture messages working…

Help Setting up Straight Talk Data and MMS on the Samsung Galaxy Mega Running Android 4.2

For the Straight Talk ATT network, try setting the APN type to default, mms, wap. For the Straight Talk TMobile network, try setting the APN type to default, mms, supl.

If you just transferred your phone number to Straight Talk, sometimes it takes a few days before you can receive MMS. I don’t know why, but I have seen that happen.
Let me know how it goes.

    Hi there!

Entering this forum because I am in desperate need of some help. Recently started using an unlocked Samsung Note 3 with Straight Talk. I bought the ATT sim card. Everything seems to be working fine except for my individual/group messaging. It seems to work for a few minutes then cuts out for a long time. A few minutes after I send a message in group chat I get a notification saying that the message failed to send. I try to resend it but nothing happens. An hour later I again try to resend, then the message finally goes through…an hour later! For me, this is an issue that cannot be ignored because I text more than I talk.
I have downloaded multiple messaging apps thinking it was the app itself that was causing this and not the network service, but I have encountered the same problem with all apps. I got the APN settings directly from Straight Talk so I know I have the “right” one, but now I am wondering if there is another set of APN settings that I need to know about?

    Please help! 🙁

      Hi David,
      Try setting the APN type.
use default, mms, wap for the Straight Talk AT&T SIM or default, mss, supl for the Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM.

      • Chan C | | Reply

I just read this post, I have default, mms, supl under APN Type but I have an ATT sim card, not T Mobile. Could this be the issue when it comes to my group messaging problem (it keeps cutting in and out. Works for a few minutes then completely stops working) or does it not make a difference?

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

          Hi Chan,
Its not uncommon to have issues with MMS picture messages and group texts when using Straight Talk. You could try changing your APN type to default, mms, wap and see if that helps. Those are generally the settings recommended for use with the ATT network. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

      Hi Lisette,
Did you set up your APN Settings? what values are you using? What version of Android are you using?

If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.

This is a common problem. You can also try setting your APN type to default, internet, wap or default, internet, supl. Some readers have had luck by trying different MMSC and MMS proxy values. Read both the following articles and the comments to see what has worked for others.

      Hi Erin,
If you are trying to bring a Verizon phone to Straight Talk you need to go to the straight talk website and see if the phone is eligible. You’ll need to follow the instructions to enter the MEID from your Verizon phones to see if they can be used on the Straight Talk Verizon network.
Looks like the site is down at the moment.

        Bob,
Sorry that was no help I have no mobile internet at all. I have tried a variety of APN settings found online including AT&T settings which is the sim card straight talk told me to put in. Straight talk says because my phone was originally purchased thru Verizon and originally set up with Verizon that it is a CDMA phone and straight talk uses GSM technology and therefore I cannot get internet and MMS to send/receive picture texts. Is there anyway around this?

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

          Hi David,
I have never used a Verizon Galaxy S4 on Straight Talk. I am guessing your S4 is a SCH-I545. Looking at the specificaions
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_cdma-5388.php, it looks like that this phone is technically compatible with the AT&T network as well as the Verizon network.

You have two choices trying to use this phone with Straight Talk. Register it as a BYOP phone on Straight Talk’s Verizon network or try to get it to work on their AT&T GSM network. The Straight Talk Verizon network only supports 3G, Verizon doesn’t let Straight Talk use their 4G LTE network. You could have registered your phone on Straight Talk as a BYOP CMDA phone. You can still try to transfer your service to from the GSM SIM to the CDMA phone through the transfer phone feature on their website.

If you keep trying, you may solve the issue with using the phone on their ATT network. If you get it to work, you may get faster data speeds 4G or 4G LTE. You just need to figure out what the issue is.

I’d start by focusing on data. Your APN is either tfdata or att.mvno. I’d do a full reset on the phone. Go into the APN settings. if there are any APN settings present. I’d note what they are, and remove them. Create a new APN. Set it to tfdata and test data with WiFi off.

I’d look at the status bar and the settings. What network are you connected to. Do you see a 3G or H in your status bar?
I’d look in settings, mobile networks, Network operators to make sure the phone is connected to HOME or ATT.

I think it would be worthwhile trying to get the phone working with AT&T before going to Verizon. Let me know if you can follow any on this. I don’t have an S4 so I have to look at my Nexus 5 to give you some ideas of what to check.
          Regards
          Bob

Thank you for your Guide. I am having issues. I can get text and pic texts from some but not others. Their device and carrier don’t seem to matter. I can however get text and pictures from them if I group text them. Just can’t figure out how to get a regular one-on-one texting. I am on a brand Jew Moto G. Android 4.3? Straight talk
Sim card was on my old iPhone.

    • Bob Thompson | | Reply

      Hi sandy,
Plain text messages are sent and received using SMS. Picture messages and group texts are sent using MMS. If you have a problem with plain text messages you need to call straight talk. SMS should just work, there is nothing to set up. The guide is for setting up MMS and data.

Your phone is brand new. I doubt it is the phone. You could try clearing your messages history. Do you still have that old iphone. Can you pop the sim back in and see if you have a problem with SMS?

If support can’t help you. Ask them if they can send you a new sim. Maybe transferring your service to the new sim might help. Then again it could get worse, a lot of people are reporting progress receiving mms lately.

I wish I had a better answer for you. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Oh and a moto g? Cool how do you like it? Cool phone. Now LTE though, I wanted to try a moto x.

I finally got the T-Mobile to work (after updating to iOS7 but I can’t get the data to work. ST advised me (after several days of back & forth) to try the AT&T sim but now I’m back to no phone signal. Any and all advice is welcome. I wish I had found your site before trying this adventure but it’s too late now…HELP!!!!!

        • Bob Thompson | | Reply

          Hi Fox,
Assuming you have the GSM iPhone 4 A1332 you iPhone should be more compatible with the AT&T network than the T-Mobile network. Is possible you are living in an area with poor AT&T coverage? Ask the people around you with phones if they are using AT&T.

You should be seeing HOME or TFW in as the network, and if you have no bars you probably don’t have a signal. You can try going into settings and do a reset network settings and see if you get a better signal. Also remove any APN profiles you installed and do a hard reset. Hold home and lock buttons until the phone reboots and then test data.
Try that. if it doesn’t work. leave another comment and I can tell you what else to try.
          Regards
