Help Setting up Straight Talk Data and MMS on the BLU Studio 5s Running Android 4.1.2

This page explains how to set up your Straight Talk Wireless data, internet, MMS picture messages, and group texts on your BLU Studio 5s using Android 4.1.2 If you are unable to browse the web without wi-fi, send and receive MMS picture messages and group texts this page may help.

This page will show you how set your Straight Talk Wireless APN settings on your phone. Your data, MMS picture messages, and group texts won’t work unless you have set this up correctly. This page is only for people using a Straight Talk Wireless SIM with Straight Talk’s AT&T-compatible network or Straight Talk’s T-Mobile compatible SIM.

If you were searching for one of the following APN Settings or values, this page might just be what you are looking for. Don’t worry if you have any idea what these mean.

APN tfdata, att.mvno, wap.tracfone
MMS APN tfdata, att.mvno, wap.tracfone
MMS Proxy 66.209.11.33, mms3.tracfone.com, mms.tracfone.com, mms3.tracfone.com
MMSC http://mms-tf.net, http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Port
APN Type
MNC 410
MCC 310
APN Type default, mms, wap, supl

This page won’t help if your Studio 5S is using Straight Talk’s Verizon-compatible or Straight Talk’s Sprint compatible network. This page will also not help if you are unable to place and receive phone calls or send and receive SMS text messages. Contact Straight Talk Wireless support if voice service or SMS text message are not working.

Smartphonematters has a number of very detailed guides that explain how to set up Straight Talk APNs for iPhones, Android, and Windows phones we use. See our APN Settings Guides. We created this help page, and our other help pages for phones we don’t have, but readers have asked for help with, see our APN Settings Help if you are are looking for help with a different phone.

My MMS is still not working. Even went from net10 to straight talk and the problem exsists.

Did you read and follow the instructions all four pages of the article? Did you set your APN type?

I WISH TO ATTACH PICTURES TO TELEPHONE NUMBERS. HOW DO I DO THIS. MY PHONE IS A BLU PHONE

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Dale,
Do you want to send pictures to phone numbers? or you want to assign a picture for certain numbers? You usually do the later by adding the number to contacts and assigning a photo to that contact.

Just got the blue 6.0 4g LTE but I’m not getting the LTE I use straight talk at&t sim what do I do to get the lte

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Scott,
You can’t really just make your phone connect to LTE. You can check the settings and make sure you have your preferred network set for LTE, but that is about it. Setting the APN will not affect whether or not you get LTE. Is it possible that ATT does not have LTE in your current location?

    Hello,
I notice my phone will bounce from H to H+ all the time, even as I type this. Is there a way to help it not constantly switch for a stronger signal?

  6. Mary | |

    Hi Bob,

I have a blu studio energy with a straight talk sim. Everything seems to be fine except I cannot get texts from people with i-phones. They recieve my message but I cannot receive theirs. Any idea what the problem is?

    Thanks!

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Mary,
Do you receive text messages from people that don’t have iPhones? Did you ever use an Apple product? iPhone? iPad? Mac?.
Ask an iPhone friend what they see in Messages after sending you a text? Do they see the message in a blue or green bubble? does the Messages show the text as “delivered”?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Mary | |

        Thanks for your reply,

Yes, I do get texts from all other types of phones. My last phone was an iPhone 3 with the same phone number. At first I kept the same straight talk sim card and just put it in my BLU Studio Energy. I was not getting any texts from my contacts with iPhones. After a week I put the sim card back into my old iPhone and there were all the texts I had missed for that week. I thought it was because I needed a new sim so I got new one from straight talk and transferred my number to it. Still no texts from iPhones.

When they text me it is blue and does not say delivered.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi Mary,
Sounds like the text messages from your iPhone friends are still being delivered via iMessage. iMessage uses your internet connection, not SMS or MMS to deliver messages. It only works with apple devices.
          Try this
          https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage

Let me know how it goes.
          Regards
          Bob

I have tried all this n still can’t get picture text or send but I can get on the browser

  8. karen | |

When I attach a picture from my photo on my text people can not retrieve it

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Karen,
If you are using the Straight Talk ATT SIM, try setting your APN type to default, mms, wap. If you are using the Straight Talk TMobile SIM try setting your APN type to default, mms, supl

      Regards
      Bob

Hi, I have tried this and I still cant download the picture someone sent me.

        • Bob Thompson | |

did you set your APN type? If so, what?

  9. Sophie | |

Thank you!!! My husband bought the Studio 5.0 II and when he could not connect to the internet he wanted to send it back. He told me if I could get everything working it was mine and he would buy anything for 6 months without asking first. LOL With this article I got a new phone!!! However, I do have a question I can not get my SD card to go all the way into the slot? It goes 3/4 way in, but then you can’t put the battery in… With the SD card my storage is limited and I worry the phone is running slow. Do you have any ideas?
    Thanks again!!!

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Sophie,
Great news. Nice job. I bet your husband will never make that type of deal again!

I don’t own one of these phones so I am not sure about the SD card. if the card isn’t going in correctly make sure you have it oriented properly. Personally I find that SIM and SD slots can be confusing. I went to the BLU site and looked at the manual, but it doesn’t show how to put the card in. I then went to YouTube an looked at a few unboxing videos for your phone but didn’t find someone putting the the SD card in either. You might want to search YouTube a little more thoroughly.

You can also call BLU support and ask them for help. They have a reputation for being really helpful. That’s what I’d do anyway.

And yes you definitely want to use a memory card with this phone. Let me now how it goes.

      Regards
      Bob

How can you adjust your front cam to take better picture

  12. cassidy | |

I had a blue studio 5 before put in the codes as listed and I could recieve picture messages, but could never send them. My phone was broken so I bought another one, I’m putting the codes in exactly as before but now I can’t even recieve them on my new phone and I’ve checked over it repeatedly to make sure I didnt put in anything incorrectly and I haven’t! Is APN and MMS APN the same thing? I don’t have a section strictly for MMS APN, there’s only an APN section. I’ve tried all kinds of things, MMS port 80 or not set. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong!

I have had my Blu Studio 5.5 since Dec, and use straight talk. I went months without being able to get pic’s but my son finely fixed that part, but I still do not get internet outside my home and this kinda defeats the purpose of have unlimited access I’ve tried talking to straight talk for help but just keep getting the data that’s on line, and I’ve tried to get in touch with BLU about this and to this date still have not got any help. And I’ve done what u said to do on here and still won’t work. Beside having to buy a whole new maker of phones is there ANYTHING I can do? HELP 🙂

  14. Barb Daenzer | |

Just got a Blu Studio X -US-GSM phone. Love it but I have one problem, when I am at home and want to use wifi it will connect, disconnect, then I have to turn the wifi back on. It goes all day like this. I get no emails at this time when it disconnects. It is like I get booted off till I turn it back on. Other cell phones work in the house and don’t get booted off. Please help. Straight talk has been no help, said the phone is faulty. I am using an AT&T sims card. Thank up I in advance.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Barb,
I assume you mean your cellular data internet connection is not working, not Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is the kind of wireless connection you might have as part of a home internet connection or use in a public location like Starbuck’s or your local library.

If you really mean WiFi, the issue is with your home internet connection or phone and not Straight Talk.

If you mean your cellular data connection, you can try removing and resetting up your APN. First do this Resetting the APN Settings to Default on Your Android Phone and then follow the instructions here How to Set up Straight Talk Wireless Data and MMS on Your Nexus 5 Running Android 4.4

I assume you are using Straight Talk Wireless. Do you know if you have the Straight Talk ATT or Straight Talk TMobile SIM in your phone? It could be possible that you don’t have a good signal at home and that it why you get drop outs. I know you said that other phones work at home, but you did not mention which network they are on.

Try the instructions above or let me know if you can clarify what the problem is.

      • Barb | |

Bob, thanks for the reply. It is the wifi I am talking about. It says it is connected but when I go to a web site i cant get on. I then go to settings, turn off wifi and turn it back on and I can get to the web page. I called blu support and they were very helpful. Had to do a restore back to factory default. No luck. She said if that didnt work to send phone back???

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi Barb,
If WiFi is the issue, you might want to return the phone. I’d try connecting to a few different WiFi networks other than your own. Its possible that the combination of your phone and your home wireless router. A replacement phone might fix the problem, but at least you’ll know what the issue is.

If you or someone in your family is familar with how to log into the router to change settings, you could also try changing the WiFi channel and see if you don’t drop connections.
          Regards
          Bob

how do I use video chat on my blue phone

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Jessica,
What do you mean by “video chat”? Are you taking about MMS picture or video messages? Or do you want to make video calls to other people? Video calls would require both you and the party you want to call to both have the same app installed. For example, skype…

  28. Jessica | |

I just got my blu studio 5.0 S II smartphone. I activated it through straight talk. I’m able to send and receive texts. But can not get internet at all. Not even my wifi. And I keep getting a notification that reads…

Please check if SIM card is ready

Please help! I’m clueless when it comes to this sort of stuff.
    Thanks!

  29. Bruce | |

Could not get Blu Studio to receive MMS in spite of all my efforts. Finally read carefully this site and noticed the “20.Enter Your APN Type (I recommend you only add this if MMS doesn’t work the first time)”
Did this and the problem is solved.
    Thanks for your help.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Bruce,
Yes. The APN type seems to be critical for the BLU phones. I did not need to set it on my Nexus 5. Maybe I should update my BLU instructions to tell people to add it the first time. I originally wanted to make sure I didn’t include extra steps.

I am glad to hear the instructions helped you get your BLU phone working.

      Regards,
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Chad,
Did you follow the instructions on my page? Did you look up your APN on the Straight Talk site using the link I provided? Did you set your APN type?
Did you port your phone number to Straight Talk recently? For some reason, it sometimes takes a several days for MMS to start working.

I have a BLU dash Jr D142k with android 4.2 jellybean on it, what do i do to get it to work with straight talk? I have an at and t sim card in it, and tried all the settings they gave me over the phone, but none of it is working, i cant even get txt to work right, plain old txt messaging

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Rebecca,
If regular SMS text messages are not working, you should open a support ticket with Straight Talk. The APN settings on the phone are for data and mms and do not affect SMS so it could be an issue with the service.

Also BLU technical support is pretty good. Don’t hesitate to call them.

On your own, you can try…
To set up your phone, you can try this.
      1. back up your phone
      2. from settings do a factory reset
      3. from my help page… look up your APN on the Straight Talk website using the link on my page
      4. follow the instructions to set up the APN

      About Your Phone
I tried to look up the specifications for the D142K. I couldn’t find the specifications. Even on the BLU web site. I could only find the BLU D140. I did find some vendors selling the D142k online.

Be aware, this phone only supports 2G data speeds, which means that if you do get it working you will see very slow data speeds. very slow. With a Straight Talk $45 a month plan, your account is capable of 4G LTE data, which is very fast. From fastest to slowest you have 4G LTE, 4G HSPA+, 3G, and then 2G.

Most BLU phones support 4G HSPA+ or 3G. While not as fast as LTE, the speed is fast enough for the phone to be usable. I have a lot of reader that use BLU phones and love them. But in this case, I don’t think you’ll be happy with the performance and you definitely are paying for better service than you’ll get with this phone.

I did run across one listing that claimed this phone supported 3G, so its possible you might get lucky.

Let me know how it goes.
      Regards
      Bob

  35. Bob | |

Hi I have a problem with my Blue Studio 5.0. I’m trying to get it completely on Straight talk, but the only thing I can’t receive or send mms. I tried to go in and enter the settings manually but the only apn is AT T and the space is grey. I can’t add one. I did the reset and still can’t add another apn. How do I fix this??

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Bob,
I am not sure what you mean by “the space is grey”. I don’t have a BLU phone but on my Android phone the APNs screen in settingg has a circle with a plus and three veritcal square dots in the upper right corner. when I choose reset to default under the three dots it deletes all the APNs and adds two new ones ATT Phone and ATT Wap. when I tap on each APN I it opens the Edit APN screen and I can delete the APN under the three dots on that page. From the APNs page I can tap the plus sign in the circle and it will open an Edit APN page that I can enter APN settings into and save them by choosing Save from the three dots menu.

Are you able to do this?

Also I moved your comment to a Straight talk help page. The page you left the comment on was for Metro PCS.

      Regards
      Bob

ok i have tried all of these , and nothing is working,, i have a 5. blu studio, i can get internet, but i cant send or recieve picture messages,,, can you help

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Lisa,
Did you try setting the APN type?

      • Lisa mercer | |

        Yes about 4 times

        • Bob Thompson | |

What did you se set your APN type to?

    • Anna Perdue | |

After following the guide to set up APN, I no longer am able to use the browser without WIFI. Before following the guide, I simply could not receive picture images in text. Now, I can’t receive text images or browser abilities. Also, when I went to the Straight Talk website to retrieve the APN settings, I received a message that I was not on the Bring Your Phone plan, and otherwise, nothing appeared to give me the APN info. Therefore, I simply followed the guide on your format with the att.mvno settings.

      • Bob Thompson | |

        Hi Anna,
Where did you get your SIM? From another Straight Talk phone. Your APN is likely tfdata, wap.tracfone, or att.mvno. Try each and see if you can get data to work again.
        Regards
        Bob

        • Anna Perdue | |

Yaaaa! I think it’s working. Thanks a bunch for your help. 🙂

my blu studio 5.0 ii work only with edge and not with 3g or h+, h i have checked everything can u help me please!

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Klev,
Are you using the Straight Talk T-Mobile or Straight Talk AT&T SIM? Check to see if you have 3G enabled in the network settings. Check Mobile Settings, Preferred Network Type. Does this phone have two SIM slots? If so which one are you using. Which model phone do you have D532u or the D532v.

  39. coreyon | |

my blu 5.0 mega wont come on and when it do it runs slow

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi coreyon,
Do you mean you have a problem turning the phone on and then it runs slow or are your talking about your data connection? If you are talking about your phone try a factory reset. I can’t promise it will help, but it is what I would do. Make sure to fully backup your phone first.

If you are talking about your data connection, what symbol to you see in your status bar, an H, 3G, or an LTE?

      Regards
      Bob

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Monika,
Look up your APN on the Straight Talk web site using the link on the help page. What is your APN? You can try going to the APNs settings page, doing a reset to defaults then deleting all the APNs. Create a new APN and enter your values.

Let me know how it goes.

The APN is tfdata. your APN type would be default, mms, wap.

      Hi Lizzy,
You are using AT&T or Straight Talk’s ATT network?

Hello guys I just got a new Blu Studio 6.0 HD and I am having some problems with downloading picture messages that I receive from texts can any one help me with this problem? Or know what I need to do to get the pictures to download that way I can see them?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Trevor,
I assume you followed the instructions to set up your APN.

If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.

This is a common problem. You can also try setting your APN type to default, mms, wap (ST att SIM) or default, mms, supl (ST Tmobile SIM).

Some readers have had luck by trying different MMSC and MMS proxy values. Read both the following articles and the comments to see what has worked for others.

I’m am so frustrated I want to seriously cry!! I just gotta a new blue studio 5.5 d610a I also bought a straight talk att gsm compatible Sim activation kit. I got everything switched over with straight talk and they adjusted my apn. I did everything they asked literally hours on the phone. I have no Internet unless connected to my home network and I cant send or receive mms messages. This is what they told me and how I have it set per them:
    Name: Straight Talk
    Apn: tfdata
    Apn type: default mms wap
    proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
    Port: not set
    username: not set
    password: not set
    Server: not set
    Mmsc: http://mms-tf.net
    Mms proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
    Mms port: mot set
    mmc: 310
    mnc: 410
    authentication type: not set
    Apn Protocol: ipv4
    Apn roaming Protocol: ipv4
    Apn enable/disable: enabled
    Bearer: unspecified

Can anyone please please help. The first day I had Internet but I went to work yesterday and had no data connection and yeah its on. Now I have no data or mms. I went to blue site just for this issue and before straight said apn type should be default Supp mms no sap blue says default mms and wap I tried that that don’t work either. I have even factory reset my phone as they requested and nothing. They said my phone IS compatible and I gsm and i read til my eyes wanna cross and other ppl with the same phone have no issues so I know it will work on straight with their Sim for att gsm. All I can do is talk and text. How can I have Internet one day and not the next morning. Straight talk said when I switched to byop to give it 24-48 hours for my plan to update to the new service… I did that too. Someone please tell me what to do or set. Straight talk says its my device now prologue cause they are sick of me calling. My phone has spent more time restarting than being used!!

I have also tried multiple settings per various sites none of them seem to work either. And I have read all the pages on this site. Anybody have the same issue with the same phone and Sim with st and have it actually work? Any other settings I may need to set differently? I have read where ppm have the exactly carrier Sim and phone and have no issues at all. I’m in Michigan all we have here is Verizon att. And sprint no tmobile.

i have no clue what the guys name was but I tried straight again and I can now send mms and have data. The straight talk guy said it is NOT our fault or phone its a setting in the data package that needs to he turned on or enabled on their end. Its in the data plan setting with them!!!! Omg my phone works!!!! He enabled it and over my signal bar you get H or H+ or lte pr a 4 or 3 depends on the towers and the signal it draws in. He said it will vary depending where you are. My phone works!!! All of it! I guess keep on straight talk and have them manually update your data settings.

          Hi Ann Marie,
Thanks for taking the time to leave your comments. I am glad Straight Talk got your phone working. With Straight Talk, sometime the problem is the phone, sometimes, the SIM, and sometimes its on their end too. You never really know until you get the problem fixed.

mms port is 80 not blank as well as port should be 80

      • Bob Thompson | |

You should be able to try either 80 or leave it blank. 80 is the default port.

I’ve been on the phone with straight talk all day . My Blu studio 5.5 is still roaming please help

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Kreshla Carter,
Are you using the Straight Talk ATT or Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM? Do you know if the ATT and / or TMobile network work well in your area? Do most people you know use Verizon, ATT, TMobile or Sprint? Does your phone show the name of the network it is roaming to?
      Regards
      Bob

Hi I have a blu studio 6.0 hd. Mobile data works and both sending and receiving mms. How ever when connected to wifi I an unable to send or receive mms. If I disconnect from wifi it works fine. Any way to fix this issue??

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Eddie,
When you are connected to Wi-Fi, do you have your cell data turned off? Do you have “Block background data” under Power saving mode enabled?(does your BLU have this option?). My guess is your phone is trying to use the Wi-Fi connection for MMS and that isn’t supported by ST. Let me know the answer to the above questions.
      Regards
      Bob
