I have a Motorola G 1st Generation phone. It came from AT&T. Can i put a Straight talk wireless card on this phone. Thanks in Advance. Bob
It should work fine it the Straight Talk’s AT&T SIM card. If you don’t use a lot of minutes and data you can also use it with Tracfone too. The only downside to that 1st generation G is that it does not support 4G LTE data, you’ll get 3G data. So with Straight Talk, you won’t get the fast speeds you are paying for.
Thank You Bob
Thanks so much. I had a Moto G 4LTE but couldn’t get LTE on Straight Talk working – even after two phone calls – one lasting an hour. I “solved” the problem by getting a One Plus One- whose LTE worked as soon as I switched the SIM card.
Well- I dropped my OPO and have to use the G until I decide to fix or replace the One Plus One. Having the Moto G’s LTE work will ease the pain until then.
Mastro63
Glad you got the Moto G working. Surprised to hear you weren’t getting LTE. Are you on the ST ATT network? Sorry to hear about the One Plus One.
Do they have an option to fix that phone?
I hv a Moto G 2nd Gen, and had my Straight Talk service switched to this phone. But I can not change the APN settings. The phone gvs me Lte/CDMA or CDMA. No place to add Straight Talk. HELP! I’ve been on chat with ST so often and they r no help
Hi Missy
Did you buy this phone from Straight Talk or bring the phone from another carrier? It sounds like you are using the Straight Talk’s Verizon network, is that the case? If so, you can’t change the APN it should set up automatically. You are looking the wrong place for the APN settings, they would be under if Settings > Wireless and Networks (or More) > Access Points if present, but I don’t think you will see it there.
What isn’t working on your phone?
I have an iPhone 5s from AT&T and I transferred to straight talk but the LTE does not work and this iPhone will not let me change the APN settings. It just didn’t have that option what should I do
Hi Oscar,
Start here Help with Straight Talk APN for iPhone
My Motorola says I’ve reached the data limit on the phone? But then states that straight talk provider has a fine connection. How do I reset my Motorola data?
Hi
where do you see these messages?
Hi, I’m trying to get the APN on my moto g set up but if I change the MNC field to 410 like suggested it will not save. Once I hit save and try to view it, the APN is just gone. I tried leaving the field at the default (which is 260) and it lets me save it but I still cant get group messages or picture messages. What can I do?
Hmm..
Try going to the APNs screen and doing a Reset to default. Then, delete all the APNs. Create a new one. Leave the default MNC if you can change it. Make sure to set the APN type.

Bob
Hey!I recently got moto g 1st gen from straight talk. Everything is set up and I can get my data to work. The only problem is my phone can’t receive/send pictures and group messages. Help!!
Hi Amanda,
try setting your APN type to default, mms, wap or default, mms, supl for the Straight Talk ATT or Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM respectively. Let me know

Bob
Hey Bob,
Thanks for the reply! My APN type is currently set to default, supl, hipri, dun. Is there something else I could do?
Amanda
Oh, never mind! I actually go it to work!! Thank you SO SO much! You are a lifesaver Bob!
It worked! I had to delete the APN that was listed, then edit the blank/generic one that was generated. Thank you!!
My sister is Melissa Hicks and she said that you helped a lot and were awesome.
True!!
Emily,
Great news. Sometimes the phone just needs a little kick. :-). That new Moto G looks like an awesome phone. I do remember your sister!
I will try to live up to all this awesomeness.

Hello! My sister sent me your way… I just got a new Moto G (gen 2) and am working to update APN for group&picture texts. I have Straight Talk using att/tmobile system.
When I tried to add the new APN as above on my phone (I pressed the “+” sign, updated the fields, and then clicked ‘save’) it takes me back the list of my APNs and the new one I just added doesn’t appear!
I tried again, making sure that I ‘saved’ the new APN but again, no luck.
Is this a problem you have heard of?
Thanks for your help,
Emily.
Hi Emily,
A family referral, ok.
I have never heard of that issue. You might be the first one with a 2nd gen moto G to comment though.
Try this.
From the APN settings, do a reset to default. Then delete any APNs that are in the list. After that try creating a new APN and see if you can save it.
Let me know how it goes. What’s your sister’s first name? I wonder if I exchanged comments with her.
Hi I have moto g with straight talk… I have been changing the APN many times to get incoming MMS to work. Data and outgoing picture are fine. What combination should I be using?
I recently purchased an unlocked Moto G 4G LTE phone and a Straight Talk sim card to activate/switch with my present ST phone. I, like many others, couldn’t send or receive photos/images via text messages. I read through all of these threads and tried several of them-and finally found something that worked!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! So happy! Thank you for helping out so many of us who do not want to sit on the phone with ST for hours. 😉
Rochelle,
That is great news. The Moto G LTE is an great phone. May I ask if you know what it was that did the trick for you? I had another reader with the G LTE who had a issue too.

Hi Bob.
I tried the original instructions and am able to get on the internet but no mms messaging. I then tried deleting all previous APNs and repeating instructions.I get a message saying “No APN specified on the device. Couldn’t send due to network problem” when I try to send pictures. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you!! Jenn
Hi Jenn,
So you have only one APN on your phone right now. And I assume it’s active. The little circle to the right of the APN name is green.
Does your data work? Can you receive mms? Did you set the APN type (try default, mms, wap or default, mms, supl for the ST att and tmobile sims respectively)
Wow! After 2 days on the phone with Straight Talk help desk in Philippines, 1 complete phone reset, and then a few tries here with Bob it finally worked. Bob, your last reply did it.
I am able to group and picture text now. I was considering changing back to my T-mobile prepaid, but Straight Talk is way better on the price and convenience and even coverage too.
Bob, thank you so much. It is appreciated!
-Asher
The ST website doesn’t have settings for moto 3 lte, so I used android 4.1 settings which are:
APN Settings
FIELD SETTINGS
APN tfdata
MMSC http://mms-tf.net
MMS PROXY mms3.tracfone.com
MMS PORT 80
MMS_APN tfdata
My phone still will not send/receive mms after resetting these setting and rebooting the phone. Thank you SO MUCH for the help. I feel so lost at this point and appreciate the help.
I also tried the settings you had on your website which are:
APN Settings
Name: tfdata
APN: tfdata
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
APN Type: default, mms, wap
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Hi Asher,
Do you still need help? I’d start by doing a reset to default on the APN page. Delete any APNs in the list. Create a new one and enter your values. The G LTE is new but setting the APN shouldn’t be any different.
I have a Motorola Moto G LTE (android 4.4.3) universal unlocked phone from amazon. I have a straight talk plan and have tried multiple different APN settings to get group and mms to work. I was on the phone for over 4 hours with 3 different reps from tracfone/straight talk and still no resolution. They say it is a problem with my phone, but motorola says they do not block phones this way. I can get to the internet just fine and also send and receive regular texts fine. I even did a factory reset on the phone, so I’ve invested over 7 hours into this already.
I’d really like some help to get picture and group texts working since over 80% of texts I send and receive are mms. Can anyone out there help me? So far Straight Talk and motorola have tried to help but have not succeeded. Many people out there have given up and went back to their old plans because of this.
I’ve had service for 2 days now and have tried the setups listed on this page to no avail. Thank you so much!
Hi Ashley,
Use the link on the help page to look up your APN settings on the Straight Talk web site and let me know what they are. I will try to help you.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for posting these very effective instructions. I got a new Moto G 4G LTE for my wife, bought a GSM SIM from Straighttalk, and followed your instructions… they worked like a charm 🙂
The Moto G 4G LTE is a new model (as I’m sure you know), and I got it for her after a lot of online research. The new model also has a SD card slot for expanded memory. Seems like a lot of bang for the buck. Ordered it directly from Motorola because Amazon was projecting about a six week wait before it would ship. I don’t have/need a smart phone (just need a basic mobile phone), so as a newbie to 4G this was a big help. I’ll encourage her to follow you on FB for her future learning enjoyment.
Jim
Hi Jim,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. The Moto G is an awesome phone for the price. I am so glad to here you did your research. I have a fair number of readers that buy low cost chinese made android phones and end up unhappy because they either get slow 2G data or no data at all because they are not compatible with US networks. And thats a shame when companies like Motorola and BLU make great inexpensive products.
I always appreciate hearing the stories when things just work!

Hi, u sound like the guy I need to talk to. I bought an unlocked moto g 2nd gen from motorola, and a micro sim from straight talk. I have had st for a long time and for the most part have been happy, unless I have to call customer service.
Anyway, I followed all the instructions to set up the phone and transfer my number, but the phone says 911 emergency calls only. I talked to st 4 times to no avail. The latest on told me to wait more days and maybe the phone will work. I really need help. Can u help me? I really want to use my new phone.
Thanks
Hi D,
If you phone says it can make emergency calls only it sounds like your sim isn’t active. Try to borrow a phone from a friend that uses a micro sim. Stick you sim in their phone and see if it has service, stick their sim in you phone to see if you phone works.
You mentioned that you were using straight talk already. Did you sign up for ST again or log into the web site and transfer your service to the new sim? Is your old phone still active?
Let me know,
Regards
Bob
Thank you! I couldn’t get my e-mail or texts, and your instructions worked perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to spell it all out.

Hey, Bob.
I recently ordered the Moto G DIRECTLY off the ST website as it was available for a nearby zip code with similar coverage (according to their terribly vague map) The model number is XT939G. I got the number ported and everything went great, however, I noticed that here in my rural town I only get EDGE service. Upon closer inspection I found that the box says GSM-T (which I assume to be t-mobile) In my area and throughout much of Southern VA, T-mobile has spotty 2G service while AT&T has 3g/4g (not LTE, HSPA+) all over including here.
The thing is, when I search for networks I CAN pick up both “T-mobile/HOME” and “AT&T” networks though I get an error when trying the AT&T, and I assume that’s because I have a T-mobile SIM from ST. I ordered an AT&T ST SIM card off their website after being told twice that they don’t offer them anymore (HA, what a joke) and am hoping that will fix my issue. This phone only offers 2G on T-mobile, I know this because I traveled with it earlier this week and in a bigger city I had 4G/HSPA/+ but STILL tested at 2G speeds despite what I was showing.
Will this work for me? I am going to try deleting all my APNs and trying each combination shown on this page. My issue is… if ST LOCKED their Moto G to T-mobile, they would essentially be lying by putting 4G on the packaging because the most it would be capable of is 2G. Sorry for ranting, let me know if I can clear anything up and thanks so much for the article!
Hi Austin,
Your Moto G is a 3G phone, not a 4G phone. If you are only getting a 2G data connection with the ST T-Mobile SIM changing APN settings won’t get you 3G. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think your phone is locked. You should be able to transfer your service to a ST ATT SIM. If the ATT network has better coverage in your area, you’ll get 3G data.
There was a period of time in 2012-2013 when ST did stop offering ATT SIMs.
Please do let me know how it goes when you try the new SIM. If you have a friend using ATT, borrow their SIM and you’ll quickly know if the phone is locked, but again, I don’t think it will be.
Regards,
Bob
Bob,
Turns out the other representative I talked to told me that one that I bought is specfically for the BYOP program, but they are shipping me an AT&T one that will work. Not a big deal since they’re only ~$6
I popped it in and I can tell it’s not locked, so that’s a good sign. Will update in a few days when I get it.
HEY. IT WORKED. I’m so glad I didn’t have to spend 6 hours on the phone with straighttalk customer service. I owe you my life. Thanks, bud.

Hi Bob,
thanks again. i tried the APN wap.tracfone Port 8080 and it didnt work for mms. i still received data and 3g. at this point i have tried so many apn’s it gets confusing, i am going to start again and record each so i know what i have tried. my concern is what if i am using the wrong apn when ST decides to kick in mms on this ported phone number. i will keep you posted and thanks again.
thank you for your experience, time and help. I purchased a moto g for my wife – using a new ST card, have tried a few recommended apns, I am able to send mms and send group text, but unable to receive either, even in the same thread. we ported the number, from ST, 3 days ago. any recommendations would be appreciated. on a side note I am amazed that motorola/google doesn’t get involved in this
Hi Mike,
If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take several days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.
This is a common problem. You can also try setting your APN type to default, mms, wap or default, mms, supl. Some readers have had luck by trying different MMSC and MMS proxy values. Read both the following articles and the comments to see what has worked for others.
Help with Straight Talk and Net10 MMS Picture Messages and I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4
One reader recently reported that the settings below worked for him, so you could try that.
APN wap.tracfone
Port 8080
MMSC http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy 66.209.11.32
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
APN type default,wap,mms
Let me know how it goes.
ST’s settings worked fine for me. My Moto G got a new, Wal-Mart bought ATT SIM card. APN Type I used was default, supl, mms. At first, I left APN type blank, and everything worked except for SENDING mms texts. Once I filled in APN type, that worked too. I am in the north DFW area, in case that matters. I did not port my number or service over, just decided to do a fresh start with a new provider.
So, having everything working using the 3G network, I had to make sure it all still worked with wi-fi turned on. And it does. I read everywhere that MMS texts still use 3G, but I don’t believe that’s the case. Why so? Well, cuz my MMS texts send/receive MUCH faster when wi-fi is connected compared to 3G. Plus, I have other evidence that tells me that MMS texts use the wi-fi connection when available.
Hi bg17,
I a glad to hear your phone is working.
It’s possible for mms to work over wifi. For it to work, your carrier needs to support it, as well as your phone. In many cases, the servers your phone needs to connect to to send mms are only available using your cellular data network connection and not your wifi connection. In this case your phone needs to be able to ignore the wifi connection and use the cellular data connection for mms.
Regards
Bob
Took me forever to figure this out. This was the only website that helped!
I have a Motorla Moto G GLOBAL (XT1032) running Android Kit Kat 4.4. I bought a Straight Talk AT&T sim card.
This was the only site where I found the wap.tracfone APN settings. They worked right away without even resetting!!!! The Straight Talk website gave me the tfdata APN settings which definitely did NOT work.
Thank you so much for this!

Still haven’t gotten MMS to work though…
Hi Rob,
Are you having problems sending, receiving or both?
Both Bob. I’ve tried a variety of settings you have recommended and others have posted as working with no luck… Some people are still saying that waiting until after the first billing cycle helps. I may just wait and see unless you or anyone else has further recommendations?
Very excited here. I tried what feels like a billion different APN settings and finally got MMS to work! Both send and receive. I used settings I found on Bob’s Google Nexus 5 tutorial:
APN wap.tracfone
Port 8080
MMSC http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy 66.209.11.32
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
APN type default,wap,mms
(All others are not set or default)
For anyone trying to solve this issue… Again, I have a Motorola Moto G global version and am using an AT&T sim card. Maybe one of these settings from Bob’s site on the Nexus 5 will help you too:
http://smartphonematters.com/guides/how-to-set-up-straight-talk-wireless-data-and-mms-on-your-nexus-5-running-android-4-4/6/
Hi Rob S,
That you for taking the time to share this. May I ask, could you look up you APN settings here and tell me if they match the settings you are using.
Use Android 4 & 4.1 for you phone type.
http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/support/apn
Regards
Bob
Absolutely not. The Straight Talk website gives me the “tfdata” APN settings that you have listed above. Those are the first settings I tried and they didn’t work.
Hi Rob S,
Thanks. I thought that might be the case.
Update:
Infuriatingly when my billing cycle was up my 3G and MMS stopped working again! Took a day to figure out new settings that worked, partially inspired by Gary’s settings below.
APN tfdata
Proxy Not Set (which I figured out via Gary’s post below!)
Port Not Set
MMSC http://mms-tf.net
MMS proxy mms3.tracfone.com
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
APN type Not Set (also what Gary did)
Hi Rob,
You many have had different, older, APN settings. Straight Talk seems to update customers to these newer settings during billing cycles, or after a service interruption. And, they don’t seem tell customers this. Kind of a pain.

I’ve had success setting up MMS (Messenging, NOT Hangouts) on my Moto G running Kit Kat with the following APN setting:
Name: Whatever you wish to call it.
APN: tfdata
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS proxy: Not set
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: Not set
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
APN enable/disable (it defaults to background and if you look hard you can see it shows a check by APN enabled – leave it be)
Bearer: Unspecified
MVNO: None
NVMO value: (again it defaults to background and shows “Not set” if you look hard enough. Again, leave it be)
Then hit “Save” up top by the thee dots. Once it saves, turn you phone completely off and then back on to reboot. It should now send and receive photos. Good luck!

I am still having issues with my internet
on my 4.2 Android chinese brand. I’m trying to connect with straight talk att sim card. The model of the phone is GT-9500. I have tried all the apn’s you’ve listed. Do you have anymore suggestions? Thanks for any help you can give me.
Hi Beverly,
Did you use the How to Update Data Settings link on the page to look up you APN settings? when you created the APN did you make sure it is active? There should be a high lighted dot next to it in the APNs?
Do you have a link to the phone you bought? Several readers with inexpensive chinese android phones have had problems getting 3G service?

i have a Motorola Moto G. APN matches exactly, data works but MMS does not. earlier today i could at least send MOST pictures (not all) i just couldn’t receive. i called the damn “tech support” she had me do a complete reset and now i cant even send. MMS doesn’t work at all anymore. its the ATT compatible sim/ activation kit from straight talk for BYOP……
Hi April,
Click on the How to Update Data Settings link on the page. Enter your phone number and Android 4.0 and 4.1 to look up your settings.
Return to the APNs page in settings. Do a reset to default. Create a new APN. Enter your values. Test data and MMS.
If you just signed up for MMS and you ported your phone number, it might take several days for you to start receiving MMS messages. It seems to be an issue when you port your number. I set up two Straight Talk accounts recently. One port and one new number. The one with the number port couldn’t receive MMS messages for several days. On the other account with a new number, it worked fine.
Some readers find they can get MMS to work by trying alternative MMSC amd MMS proxy values. You can also try setting your APN type to default, internet, wap or default, internet, supl.
You can also read through both these articles and the comments.

Hey Guys,
Just thought I would tell you my experience. I’m using Moto G on ST – ATT and I had the same problem. Tried everything – researched the forums, changed APN settings, went from stock messaging to google hangouts, back to messaging, change APN settings again, reboot, etc. etc. I could send and get regular text messages and data worked fine but MMS would not work. So I basically just gave up and I was just going to get a new phone at some point because I wanted 4G anyway. Anyway I basically just forgot about it and then one day I received a pic mail from a friend of mine and voila! It was working and what happened was this was right after the billing cycle. I had read that before but didn’t believe it – why would that help – I don’t know – but it worked for me. I almost want to say it’s intentional they make it a pain in the ass so you will go to ATT and pay $80 a month. I don’t know – anyway – if you want to sit it out try that – that’s the only thing that worked for me and it seems to be working fine now.
Jason
Hi Jason,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes, more readers are reporting that after a few days they can receive MMS. I set up two Straight Talk BYOP phone’s recent. The first, in February. I ported a number to Straight Talk and I could not receive MMS. I tried the SIM in both an iPhone 5 and a Nexus 5. I simply could not receive MMS. I set up another Straight Talk SIM a few days ago with a new number. MMS works both directions with no issues.

Hi Bob, I have a Moto g running on Kit Kat, Straight talk with AT&T. I couldn’t get MMS to work. Single text messages worked fine, but not group texts or attachments.I called Straight Talk to make sure SIM card was provisioned correctly and it was. Next I contacted Motorola. They told me my phone was not capable of supporting MMS and suggested a third party app. I downloaded one and it worked to send text, but I still could not receive group texts or pictures. Then I discovered your website this morning! Evidently my APN info was not set up correctly to begin with. My MMSC had the proxy info listed and the MMS Proxy was not set. All I had to do was correct those 2 fields, restart my phone and voila! It works! Thank you so much! The Moto g is a great little phone, just disappointed that the Motorola help desk could not troubleshoot this problem. Thank you for your excellent website and documentation!
Hi Shirley,
I am glad to hear you were able to follow the instructions and fix your phone. The moto G and the moto x are awesome phones to use with straight talk. I’m surprised that Motorola told you that too. Thank you for taking the time to share your story. You mentioned your APN had the values in the wrong fields. May I ask did you set up the APN the first time or was it somehow set up when you discovered it?
Just curious.

Hi Bob,
Great page and very informative. I have tried just about everything short of getting a new phone to get this to work. Purchase a brand new Moto G from AMZN and a brand new AT&T Micro Sim from Straight Talk and haven’t been able to get pic mail working since.
Text messages work fine as far as I can tell and the data seems to be fine as well but I can’t get picture mail.
I tried all 3 options you have listed above and the only one that works for me is the tfdata APN. The other 2 I don’t get data. So I’m guessing that is the right setting at least for the MMSC.
I have seen just about everything under the sun for settings that work for some people and not for others. ST tech says the settings I have (first option above) are correct for my phone.
I just tried a power down, pulling the SIM, powering up, power down, install SIM and back up and nothing.
So just wondering if you had any thoughts on how to get this darn thing to work.
Thanks in advance.
Jason
Hi Jason,
Many Straight Talk customers are having problems receiving MMS. Some customers have fixed it by calling Straight Talk support and getting them to reset or re provision their account. Sometimes they will make some changes. Sometimes the will tell you MMS isn’t guaranteed to work. Others have fixed the problem by trying different permutations of MMSC and MMS Proxy values.
See the comments on I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4
Let me know how it goes. The Moto G is cool. Been thinking of buying a G or an X.

Bob
Thank you for all of this but i have tried all 3 and nothing works. Please help. Straight Talk doesn’t know what they are doing when I have spoken to them several times.
Please help. Thanks
Hi Glen,
Are you using the Straight Talk AT&T or Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM? When you go to the APNs in Settings are there APNs already in the list? What are they? Make sure to remove them. Make sure you have the APN you created active. Id remove the APN you created and start with a new one. When you create the new APN enter just a name and the APN. Focus on getting data working.
When you try to load a web page with Wi-fi off, what do you see in your status bar? Do you see an E or 3G? press and hold the volume down and power button to take a screen shot. You can email it if you want.
