Help with Straight Talk Data and MMS APNs for Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket

A reader  Cynthia writes,

I recently purchased an att samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket, unlocked. I purchased an ATT sim for Straight talk. Have had Straight talk for about a year now and had no problem porting my number. I went to their website changed the apn settings as suggested by them, I have great internet, 4G most of the time, but I cannot send or receive mms messages. What do I need to change to do this? Don’t want to lose my internet capabilities while trying to fix my mms issues. HELP

Update 4
Try 66.209.11.33 and 66.209.11.32 for the MMS proxy. Let me know.

Can you send me a screenshot of your apn settings. All of them, if it is two pages long?
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket/290225-samsung-galaxy-s2-skyrocket-how-do-i-take-screenshot.html

UPDATE 3
Hi Cynthia,
Try changing mms3.tracfone.com to mms2.tracfone.com and see if that works. Also can you tell me what version of android you phone is running?

UPDATE 2
Hi Cynthia,
Go to that Straight Talk link you sent me and enter your phone number or SIM number and leave me a comment on this page with the values the site returns to you. Do not include your phone number or SIM number in the response.

UPDATE 1
Hi Cynthia,

I may be able to help you. Can you point me to what they told you to do on their website. We may be able to get your MMS working. I will point out that you may lose your internet for period on time you are trying different MMS settings, but you should then be able to restore internet whether or not you get your mms working. Let me know if you want some help.
Regards
Bob

I don’t think anyone on here knows what their talking about. I’ve been on every forum and even called straight talk today with no results. Then you have people that decide to jump into the forum with phones that aren’t even the galaxy sii skyrocket?? I’ve had this phone for a year and when I first connected straight talk my mms worked. After doing a factory reset because of other issues with the phone I can’t get my mms to work. I will never own another att phone!!! They are junk!!! Luckily I have a galaxy s4 by T-Mobile on the way. Ha! I will most definitely put this att sii underneath the rear tire of my mustang and do a serious burnout on it when the s4 arrives.. I hope it skyrockets into a million pieces..

Sorry to hear you did not find smartphonematters helpful. Best of luck with your new galaxy s4.

      Hi Aaron,
Are you using a SIM card in this phone, or did you buy it from Straight Talk. We need to know if you are using Straight Talk’s att, tmobile, verizon, or sprint compatible networks.

Hello. I have a ATT Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-I777) on straight talk (att towers). For some reason I can no longer download mms messages since my phone was updated to android 4.1.2. I can send them with no problem.

Need apn settings for att galaxy s2 with sraighttalk service. Got internet but cant get mms

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi LaDonna,
Did you get your phone working?
      Regards
      Bob

The only way I got mms to work was to download GoSms from the market and disabled the stock messaging and notifications. Now I can send and receive mms (picture) messages. I hope this works for you.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Bill,
Thanks for taking the time to share your solution. I think that program uses your data connection and send the messages trough sms / mms using there back end. Definately a good option though.
      Regards
      Bob

    • sean | |

To bill go SMS ? how do you disable stock

      • Bob Thompson | |

        Hi Sean,
IT should be in the settings. If you install the app, it might also prompt you to make it the default.
        Regards
        Bob

      Bob

      • Gail | |

Bob, Ive tried so many… current settings are :
        name: straight talk
        apn: tfdata
        mmsc: http://-tf.net
        mms proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
        mms port: 80
        apn: default,supl,mms

this allows me to do all except receive mms…Ive changed the above slightly and totally to no avail…thanks for your help

  15. Cynthia | |

I can send but not send 🙂

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Cynthia,
Is it working? i am not sure what you mean.
      Regards
      Bob

  16. Cynthia | |

Should I change it back or leave it?

    • Bob Thompson | |

Doesn’t matter for now… I need to come up with a a few more things for you to try. This is how this goes with mms you end up trying a bunch of values.. When you test always test both sending and receiving a pic. Some times one direction works but not the other. I’ll get back to you later today.
      Bob

  17. Cynthia | |

Nope, didn’t work. I changed rebooted had someone send me an MMS but it won’t download

  18. Cynthia | |

Ok thanks trying that now. Android version is 2.3.6
    Thank you so much

This is what the fields and settings are on my phone which is as close as I could come to what they are stating:

    name STRAIGHT_TALK
    apn tfdata
    proxy not set
    port not set
    user name not set
    password not set
    server not set
    mmsc http:mms-tf.net
    mms port 80
    mnc 410
    authentication type none
    apn type internet + mms+supl
(options for that field are the above option or internet or mms or supl. This field wasn’t included at all in their instructions as you can see from the settings above)
Thank you SO much for trying to help I can get NOTHING out of straight talk.

    • brandy | |

my cell has the same settings it will not let me put in whatever I want on the mms_apn I can’t typw what they tell me to which is tfdata.

      • Bob Thompson | |

        Hi Brandy,
I am not sure I understand. Are you trying to edit some existing APN settings on your phone, or did you create a new APN and try to enter the tfdata values?
        Regards
        Bob

Updating your APN settings does not guarantee that MMS (Multimedia/Picture Messaging) will work. MMS is dependent upon your phone model’s limitations. If you have an iPhone and you would like to use MMS, you may need further changes in your iPhone in order to update your MMS settings. You may search online for more information.

    Samsung Galaxy S (3G, 4G).

    From the home screen:
    Press “Menu.”
    Select “Settings.”
    Select “Wireless and networks.”
Confirm that “Flight Mode” is unchecked.
    Select “Mobile Networks.”
Confirm that “Use packet data” is checked.
    Select “Access Point Names.”
    Press “Menu.”
    Select “Reset to default.”
    Select “Menu.”
    Select “New APN.”
Please refer to the table on the left to select and enter values (Case Sensitive)
    Press “Menu.”
    Select “Save.”
    Reboot your phone.
Your Internet and MMS are now configured!
