How to Setup Straight Talk Data and MMS for your Android or other Smartphone

These help pages show you how to set up your data, internet, MMS picture messages, and group texts for Straight Talk and Net10 Wireless using their AT&T-compatible network or T-Mobile-compatible network.  They explain how to set up your phone’s APN settings.

Check the APN guides to see if we have a complete guide for your specific phone. If not these help pages, while not as detailed, may be enough to help.

These pages will not help you if your phone is using Straight Talk or Net10 Wireless’ Verizon-compatible or Sprint-compatible networks.

Thanks to everybody. I have changed APN settings several times and finally got it working.
My device is Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 with GSM. I am using a Cyanogenmod custom ROM with Android 4.0.4. I haven’t tried this setting with newer ROMs. If anybody tells me I will appriciate it. I recently downgraded from the latest nightly built. Anyway…

    Here is my APN settings:
    name: straighttalk
    APN: tfdata
    Port: 80
    MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
    MMS proxy: mms2.tracfone.com
    MCC: 310
    MNC: 410
    APN Protocol: IPv4

Including MMS port other things are not set.

    Good luck to everybody.
    Mehmet

    • Mehmet T. | |

I forgot to say, sending/receiving picture messages and internet connection are all working.

      Regards,
      Mehmet

      Hi Mehmet,
I am glad the hear it worked for you. Most of my readers here, aren’t so hard core with custom ROMs and stuff so you may be living on the edge with trying the new ROM update.
Thanks for sharing which values work for you.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Mehmet T. | |

        Thanks Bob,
By the way, I downgraded my phone to Android 2.3.6, and now it accepts mms3.tracfone.com as the MMS proxy, not mms2. Other settings remain same. Obviously, these settings are strictly dependent to the operating system. Actually they shouldn’t be. I also tried with the new CM 10.2 (Android 4.3.0) and it did not need any settings. I just created an empty APN and saved it. mms and data worked just fine. I hope this information helps somebody.
        Good luck.

I have a new BLU Life View phone (here are specs in case I am not posting enough detail on the phone http://www.morecellphone.com/phone/blu-life-view-l110/803)that is on the straight talk network. It is an Android phone with Jellybean. The settings I tried with the APN are:

    Name: straight talk

    APN: tfdata

    Port: 80

    MMSC: http://mms-tf.net

    MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com

    MMS Port: 80

(These were the ones found on the website at http://straighttalkbyop.com/program.php)

I have no problem sending regular text messages, nor talking, sending or receiving calls but CANNOT send picture messages nor access any data off the mobile network. Can you help with this setting? Thank You for even taking the time to try.

    • Kristine Lancaster | |

Update – I was able to fix it by going to Google Play Store and downloading an app called Offline SIM which knew the correct configuration for my phone. So far so good 🙂 Thanks for the website, its a wonderful thing people do to help each other. Have a great day. (THe things that were different were the APN type was default, mms and another one that started with S but not the WAP, and then also the mms3.tracfone.com was something with cingular instead.

      • Bob Thompson | |

        Kristine,
I am very happy to hear your solved you problem. You did it before I even got to respond to your first comment! And a super big thank you for coming back to comment and share your solution with here in the comments. I have no doubt that Offline SIM will help many other android users that come here looking for help.

It turns out that Straight Talk and Net10 actually use three different APNS, but they only document one their website. (maybe two).

        Regards
        Bob

  5. Mila | |

    Hi,

We just switched to Straight Talk with unlocked AT&T phones. Called Straight Talk and they provided APN settings for all 3 phones. Data works perfectly, but we still cannot send or receive picture messages, could you please help us with that? Our phones are HTC Inspire, HTC Vivid, and LG Optimus G970.

    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    Mila

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Mila,
Maybe. Did they give you the same settings for all three phones? If so what are they? I don’t have any these phones on hand, but I might be able to help.
      Regards
      Bob

Hi Bob, I have a new samsung galaxy S3 on straight talk with an at&t compatible sim card bought from ST. After setting the APN network info several times, I have data and can send MMS/pictures. I can’t receive them yet. Can you help? I saw you asked others for their APN setting info so I am including it just in case. Thank you.

      • Meghan Monahan | |

Not sure what I did or how I did it, but everything is working now.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi Meghan,
Yes it goes that way. Sometime it just requires some fiddling. In fact, that is a big part of it.
That’s for taking the time to let me know you got it working. Thanks for leaving the extra details when you asked for help. Come back if you think I can help in the future.
          Regards

Wish you knew what you did. I have a Samsung Glide and all the features worked fine with a t-Mobile/ST sims but the reception was awful so I switched to AT&T/ST sims and can do everything but receive picture text (can send them). Nobody able to help so far. Upgraded os even.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi mom,
Did you program your APN settings? If so do you know which APN values you are using?
Do you know what I am talking about?

I got a new at&t sims card for my android smart phone and I can not get on the internet with it

      • Bob Thompson | |

        Hi Wanda,
Did you try to set up your Data APN in the settings? What type of Android phone do you have? What version of Android?
        Regards
        Bob

  7. Michael | |

I have a AT&T LG Optimus G Pro (E-980) that is unlocked. MMS only sends, I can receive but it will not download the message. I am currently using the stock APN settings that straight talk recommends, but have entered around 10 other settings today that others say to try with no success (reboot phone on every change) and still nothing. If you can help that would be great, if not I’m going to have to transfer to AT&T Go Phone. Thank you.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Michael,
Which settings are you using? Do multiple different settings only allow you to send?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Michael | |

        Current APN settings are:
        Name: Straight Talk
        APN: tfdata
        Proxy: not set
        Port:80
        MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
        MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
        MMS Port: 80
        MCC: 310
        MNC: 410

I have tried multiple variations of this including changing the APN, MMSC and MMS proxy. All changes include a soft reset. All changes do not allow downloading of MMS although I can send them with no issue to others. Also, it was noticed that with some of the APN changes I did it kicked the phone from 4G down to 3G service, and upon changing back to Straight Talk default APN settings the phone would be back to 4G service.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi,
Have you tried changing the mms proxy to mms2.tracfone.com, 66.209.11.32, and 66.209.11.33.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Michael | |

Yes I did all of those, and MMS still wouldn’t receive, and also those are some of the settings that took the phone from 4G to 3G.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi
Are you not getting the pics or they just won’t download?
            Regards
            Bob

          • Michael | |

MMS will not download, I receive the MMS message, hit the download icon for it and it will attempt to download the message but then it fails. This function worked when it was on AT&T so I know it is not a phone defect.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Michael,
I am on the road so responses are a little slow. I am hearing from a lot more android users on st and net10. I am not sure what the problem is. I have been researching this on the internet and android users on a lot of different carriers seem to have this problem too. I think you mentioned going to pay and go. If you get the chance, stop by an att store and see if they can show you it will work. I had and iphone user who told me he had problems getting the settings correct.

I’m looking into this problem a little more as I am going to get my site into android a little more. I think you mentioned a soft reset. Have u tried a factory reset? Backup, factory reset , then try to set up mms on a fresh phone.

I’ll reply as I find out more.

            Regards
            Bob

          • Michael | |

No problem. Also just to add to the confusion, we have a total of 4 phones on ST (all Android) the 2 LG Optimus G Pro E980 which have the issues we’ve discussed, an LG Optimus G E970 and a Samsung Galaxy SII. I have no feedback on the Galaxy as it is with another family member, but the LG E970 (Optimus G) has the default ST APN settings (same as all the phones have) and it get MMS just fine, ran a test this morning on it and sent several to it and it had no issues, hit download and they were there. I have tried yet again on the E980 Optimus G Pro’s and still nothing.

I have a Samsung Galaxy s3, and I have access to internet and can receive picture messages while using the apn settings for att sim cards on the straight talk website. I cannot send picture messages. I have been looking all over the internet for a solution and even called straight talk customer support, and they just told me that my phone was probably not up to date, but thats a complete load of bs, since if i try to update it, the phone says it’s up to date. Would GREATLY appreciate some solution to this problem.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Andrea,
I can try to help you. You have the Straight Talk AT&T SIM? If your data connection working, did you set it up? What exact settings are you using?

    Question-

My sister-in-law bought a Samsung Galaxy Proclaim from Straight Talk and is using it on their network. Everything works fine, except she can’t send video with text messages. She can send pictures, just not video. She can receive video, just can’t send it. Any idea what to check/do?

Also, a friend has an LG Optimus with the same problem. She also bought it from Straight Talk and uses it on their network.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Alex,
I hear from many readers with similar problems. Sometimes changing the APN and MMS settings can help. Can you find out want APN values she is using for Data and MMS?

      Regards

  17. Cynthia | |

I recently purchased an att samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket, unlocked. I purchased an ATT sim for Straight talk. Have had Straight talk for about a year now and had no problem porting my number. I went to their website changed the apn settings as suggested by them, I have great internet, 4G most of the time, but I cannot send or receive mms messages. What do I need to change to do this? Don’t want to lose my internet capabilities while trying to fix my mms issues. HELP

  18. Jess | |

I’m running a fully factory unlocked GSM Samsung Galaxy S3 mini (i8190) and I’m trying to get it to run 3G on Straight Talk. So far I’m stuck on EDGE and the company is being as useless as they’ve ever been on helping me get it on 3G.

I had one of their crummy P.O.S android phones (older LG Optimus model) and IT (on Android 2.1) was getting 3G everywhere, so what gives with this brand new, fully updated android?

I checked my broadband settings- it covers all BANDS so there’s no excuse for it to not link up.

Is it my SIM Card by chance? I can’t remember if this is the same one I bought for my old HTC Legend or if it’s the one I pulled from the last android (or does that not matter?)

If I do the mmsc.cingular settings, I get EDGE. If I do the mmsc.tracfone settings- I get the same thing.

If I do the silly settings the company gave me, I can’t even get Edge (which is something like tracfone3.mms or it was along those lines).

I’ve been fighting with this phone off and on now for a month. I’m becoming royally fed up with it not connecting to 3G and I’m confident it’s not a phone error. When I try to find other people using ST on this phone, they say they’re running 3G but they never (this is on the internet) actually give out the APN they have let alone HOW they got it to run on 3G.

The only thing I’ve seen is a website claiming that if you pay them $10 (which I am not about to do) they will configure your internet/mms settings for you (odds are that’s a scam) saying that only highly trained technicians can get it right.

This is how I see it- if a lower model craptacular android can run 3G and this thing is for sure factory unlocked and runs all bands no matter what (ATT AND TMOBILE), there’s no reason this GSM phone isn’t picking up the 3G.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Jess,
I don’t have a i8190 on hand to look at buy this sounds like an interesting problem. I am going to tell you what I would do if I were you, so be warned.

Generally speaking, your data or mms apns are not going to change the speed of your network connection. On some of the older networks, they would change the throughput, by not the speed you connect at. So if you see a 2G or E in your status bar, changing an APN isn’t going to fix that.
The i8190 should radio frequencies support:
      2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
      3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100

We need to get your phone to connect to the 3G network instead of the 2G network.

First, check to see that your phone isn’t set in 2G mode, check
Settings/More/Mobile Networks then make sure use only 2g networks isn’t selected.

If that is isn’t the problem, try this:
Go to Phone and type *#*#4636#*#*
It will open the Android testing menu.
There you have several category of information. Tap in phone information.
Scroll down there and you can find set preferred network type.
Set it to WCDMA only, same as in HSDPA USB modem.

      Give that a try.

Also keep in mind that Straight Talk offers both ATT and T-mobile network SIMs. One or the other may work better with your phone depending where you live.

Let me know how it goes.

      Regards
      Bob

Hi I have a straight talk LG Optimus Showtime, I am also having terribly slow internet speeds. It has ALWAYS been slow. No matter the cell reception. Im not sure as to how to change “APN” settings. I would need a walk through on how to do this. I like the phone, but the internet is making me want to switch carriers all together. Thanks.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Tim,
I think this is a Verizon phone. When you set it up did you dial *22890 to program the phone?
      Regards
      Bob

      • Tim | |

Yes I went through everything to program it. If I hadnt I wouldnt be able to use it to begin with… Calling is fine, no issues there, but when downloading off the playstore or using webpages the internet is so slow.

LG Optimus Showtime Walmart straight talk phone Slow Internet So slow downloading MMS Pictures Downloading from the internet

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Steven,
This phone is using the Verizon network I think. Is that correct? What do you see in the star bar when you are using it? I wonder if you are only getting a 2G connection.
Can you take a screenshot when you are using using the web browser.
Taking a screen shot should be pretty easy.
With Android 4.x press the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time, hold them for a second, and your phone will take a screenshot. It’ll show up in your Gallery app.
Let me know if you can get a screenshot.
      Regards
      Bob

Bob, You seem to know more than the rest of the Internet.

I got a new Blu Vivo 4.3 unlocked with a Straight Talk ATT compatible sim. I don’t know any of the APN settings that I need…the default name is ATT, but I’m not sure even that is right. Can you help me out?

  30. Dominic | |

I have a Huawei H88C1 running android 4.0.4. This phone uses Verizon towers.
I am having problems getting texts from people. One person in particular, who is using a Verizon phone, has been texting me a few times and tells me I don’t respond. But, every so often one of his texts makes it through.
I reprogrammed my phone and still seem to be having problems.
    Very frustrating.
    Thanks.
    Dominic

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Dominic,
Were you able to resolve this problem? If you are having problems with regular SMS that sounds like it is more on the Straight Talk side then on your phone. I assume by reprogramming it you mean dialing *22890. MAybe you could go into the phone and do a reset to factory settings and then reprogram it. I have not idea if that will work, it is what i would do before spending a long time on the phone with tech support.

      Regards
      Bob

Hi! I have an LG optimus showtime from straight talk that I purchased at Wal-Mart. My problem is this. During an activephone call I front have a data/internet connection. I can not send or receive picture messages or access Facebook or and Google search while I am on a call. I paid $200.00 for this crap. I’ve had android since they first started and have always been able to access internet while on a call. It’s for business purposes and I don’t understand why I can not access the internet if I am on a call. When I called straight talk the woman said it was rare that I would need to use the internet while I was on a call! What the heck. For years that I’ve had an android phone I’ve been able to use the internet while I’m on a call. I feel robbed, but do you know anything about it because straight talk is clueless. I’ve tried almost all settings and don’t see why it doesn’t allow me to access any data. This is frustrating. Thank you in advance I’ll be looking for your response. 🙂

    • Alicia | |

Correction I don’t have an internet connection during an active call. My phone also types what it pleases, but that is beside the point lol…

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Alicia,
Did you previously use ATT or TMobile? I think the LG optimus showtime uses the Verizon network. (Straight Talk phones uses the Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile networks). I have never been a Verizon wireless customer, but I understand you can not use voice and data at the same time on Verizon.
Let me know and I can try to help you.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Alicia | |

No. I was never a Verizon customer. I switched from T-Mobile to straight talk, buying a brand-new straight talk phone. The LG optimus Showtime. I’m thinking it isn’t going to work. I might see if I can use a boost htc evo and have it flashed, but I prefer not to spend more money on the card they require you to purchase being there is no guarantee that will even work with that phone. Idk I might change all together, but if you could figure it out. That be great too.. and thank you for responding so quickly.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi,
I’ll look Optimus a little later to verify Verizon is the issue. Did you like your last Android phone? Did you like T-Mobile? May I ask why you decided to switch? What phone did you use on t-Mobile?
Prepaid wireless can have a lot of advantages, but unfortunately its left up to the customer to make an informed choice. I went through the process and it is why I created smartphonematters.com

          Regards
          Bob

Hi,I have an Lg encore gt550 that I can’t find the apn settings for straighttalk! Is there anyway you could help? Thank you so much..

  33. Jordan | |

I bought an unlocked Samsung galaxy s3 mini online. When it came in it was obvious that this phone came from Italy. It came with a euro charger etc…. I bought the straight talk AT&T sim. I followed the apn setup instructions on the straight talk site. Everything works fine but it almost never connects to 3G. I know there are towers in the area because other AT&T phones connect easily. What should I do? Is this foreign phone different somehow?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Jordan,
Did you have to into the settings and configure the Access Point Name (APN). It would be tfdata, att.mvno, or wap.tracfone?

When you say you don’t get 3G often, do you mean you don’t have data or get slow data? Do you see an E in the status bar?

There are likely a number of different S3 mini models for different countries. All GSM phones, the kind you put SIM cards in, support different radio frequencies. I could be possible that the phone’d radio isn’t full compatible with 3G where you live or are trying to use the phone.

About 2 years ago, I bought a Galaxy Nexus and I was sent a phone from Japan, it worked on T-Mobile but not at all on ATT. I returned it and bough the same phone from Amazon. This time I was shipped to correct model.

      Your Options.
      1. Send me a link what you bought online and I can take a look for you
      2. email me some pics of the box, and I can see wat frequencies, model you have.
      3. take the phone to an ATT store, when it is not busy, say you are thinking of switching to AT&T pay and go? Will this phone work? don’t committ to change just yet.
      4. Repeat #3 at the T-Mobile store. Depending where you live. T-Mobile service might bee great. They have some awesome plans too. $30 mon for 100 min talk and 5BG of data!
      5. return this phone as soon as possible (so that they will take it back)

I’d can try to help you with this. Let me know.

      Regards
      Bob

So it would seem that my issue is more common than I thought, I have a Motorola Atrix HD unlocked running a ST AT&T sim card. Everything works great except one minor flaw, I can’t receive mms. Sending works fine, it will even show that the person sent a pic, just won’t let me download it. I have scoured the internet and all sorts of forums with people offering different apn settings that have rectified their issue. Granted I have only had this phone for a few days now it’s still early but a nuisance at that. I’ve tried all the different MMSC and MMS Proxy settings….nothing! I have a newer sim so it won’t allow me to use the att.mvno, I have to use tfdata. Shot in the dark if you have any solutions but worth a shot, sure as hell beats talking to someone at ST tech support who speaks 2 words of English!

    Jamie

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hey Jamie,
I don’t have an answer for you. I help a lot of iPhone users and often it is a matter of getting the correct combinations of MMS configurations to try. Would you be willing to email me a screenshot of the Atrix’s settings for Data and MMS. I can create a page of the site with all the different combinations to try.

Taking an screenshot with Android 4.x is easy. Press the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time, hold them for a second, and your phone will take a screenshot. It’ll show up in your Gallery app.

Let me know, I’d like to get some pages up for the different Android devices.

      Regards
      Bob

    Hi Bob,
I have a Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Proclaim, which I purchased directly from Straight Talk. It is supposed to run off of Verizon’s network. Everything on my phone works great EXCEPT when it comes to receiving picture messages, group text messages, or a message that exceeds the 150 character limit and goes into two messages (pretty sure these are all referred to as MMS messages). I have called Straight Talk multiple times and they are of no help. Any suggestions on how I might be able to fix this?

    Thank you,
    Brittany

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Brandon,
I can try to help you, but I don’t have a droid 3 myself. Did you try all three of the Straight Talk APN values: tfdata, att.mvno, and wap.tracfone? Also what model of Droid 3 is this? what network was it on beforehand. What version of Android is it running?

  44. Brianna Brown | |

I have recently just brought an unlocked GSM phone that is compatible with Straight Talk. The phone is a BLU Vivo 4.3. I activated my Sim Card with Straight Talk and changed my apn settings. I am able to make a receive calls perfectly and surf the internet as well. I am able to send out text messages and people receive mine but I am not able to receive other people’s messages to me! The phone is a dual sim, since I activated it with it being in the 3G slot could I switch it to the 2G slot with and still able to work? PLEASE HELP!

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Brianna,
If you are having problems with SMS, or text messages, you should call Straight Talk for help. I can’t promise this will work but you could try backing up your phone and doing a reset and making sure your phone software is up to date. some readers report these problems clear up by switching to a new SIM.

If you are having problems with MMS or picture messaging, you may find that your MMS settings are not right. If this is the case, let me know what settings you are using? I might be able to recommend some different ones to try.

I am not familiar with this specific phone. If it has 2G and 3G SIM slots, and you have 3G service with ST, I’d think you would want to use the 3G slot. If you are only getting 2G service with your SIM, I’d think you would want to switch to a network with 3G service.

      Regards
      Bob

Hello—I just got an LG Olympus Showtime on StraightTalk….everything is running fine EXCEPT I cannot receive texts/mms from the other 2 StraightTalk phones in the household. I can send and THEY receive. I can send and receive to myself. But NOT receiving from them. I can send and receive from another family phone in another state. HELP. I tried to check the APN settings—-but there is NO APN. I’ve followed EVERY step—until you “click on APN” and there is NO APN on this phone.

I have a Motorola Blur that I use on Straight Talks BYOD service for ar&t. My data works, very slow, along with everything else with the exception of mms. I have tried various apn’s and cannot get the mms service to work. I don’t use it often so it has not been a big deal however I am rather frustrated that there seems to be no fix to this. I have connected straight talk regarding this issue. They just tell me to put in the same apn that is listed on they site. Is there anyway you could help me out with this issue? I was wondering if you had ever figured out a proper fix to allow for mms. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Joseph,
I don’t have a Blur, but maybe I can help you. If your data is very slow, I’d check to make sure your phone and the Straight Talk network you chose are compatible. You mentioned you are using the Straight Talk ATT SIM, are you sure? And if so do you know if your Blur was an ATT phone or a T-Mobile phone. Turns out that the Straight Talk ATT SIMs are rare these days, most Straight Talk customers show up at smartphonematters.com using an iPhone with the ST T-Mobile SIM and 2G data.

As for MMS, what settings have you tried? and what APN are you using for data? There are several combinations of configuration data you usually need to try in order to get MMS working. Let me know, maybe we can figure it out.

      Regards,
      Bob

I have a new unlocked Pantech Burst with a Straight Talk AT&T sim. I cannot receive picture messages. Everything else works. Internet, sending mms. When a pic message is sent to me, my phone recognizes that I got one and who sent it but it won’t download. I have spent hours online trying to fix it. It seems this is a common problem on Straight Talk and AT&T with many different android phones. I still can’t find a solution.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Bobbie,
Did you have to enter the APN settings to get data and MMS messages to work (at least as sending…)
If so what settings are you using?
