How to Setup Straight Talk Data and MMS for your Android or other Smartphone

These help pages show you how to set up your data, internet, MMS picture messages, and group texts for Straight Talk and Net10 Wireless using their AT&T-compatible network or T-Mobile-compatible network.  They explain how to set up your phone’s APN settings.

Check the APN guides to see if we have a complete guide for your specific phone. If not these help pages, while not as detailed, may be enough to help.

These pages will not help you if your phone is using Straight Talk or Net10 Wireless’ Verizon-compatible or Sprint-compatible networks.

    I have a Samsung SCH-S738C
    Android 4.0.4
    Straight Talk
    No sim card
    Verizon Network

I’m unable to receive group texts and Straight Talk told me they do not offer this service. Could you please help me? This is driving me nuts.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Amy,
Thank you for providing all that info in your first comment. I have never used a smartphone on Straight Talk’s Verizon network. When you use a smartphone on the Striaght Talk’s ATT or TMobile network. You need to enter APN settings to get data, MMS, and group texts working. With their Verizon network, the phone is supposed to program itself when you dial the activation sequence.

Regular Text messages use SMS. Picture messages and group text’s use MMS. Do picture messages work?

I don’t know how to fix this. I get this question a lot. Here is what I would do.

      1. Call Tracfone Executive Resolution at 1-800-876-5753 (I googled the number, it should be correct)
Be polite. Ask them to try it fix it. Tell them you know it works for your friends. Ask them if they can just re-provision your account… Ask them what the Data APN, MMS APN, MMSC and MMS Proxy values are for Straight Talk on the Verizon network. Tell them you looked on the website and found the values for their AT&T and T-Mobile network but not the ones for their Verizon network. See what they say..

Let me know if you want more help.
      Regards
      Bob
      2. You could try to add the settings your self. A reader told me the APN values that Straight Talk uses. I have never found them documented anywhere. If you look on your phone can you see the APN settings.
      Check here:
      Tap “Settings.”
Tap “Mobile Data” (some phones say “more”).
Tap “Mobile Networks” (some phones have “Access Point Names” here).
      Tap “Access Point Names.”

I have been trying for a over a month to get MMS to work on my straight talk phone. I got a new Sim (the last one was too small and I had taped it in place) When I set up this one I received a text from straight talk c link for app from google play http://bit.ly/st_apn After installing this app everything works just as it should. Thought this might help others.

          Hi FeliCa,

    Hello,

I have a used T-Mobile g2x with an at&t straight talk sim card. I can send and receive messages and calls, and go online when I have wifi, but I have no 3g data. It has never even appeared, only the 2g symbol. I’m not sure what to do, it all seems to be set up right. I hope you can help.

    Thanks,
    Abby

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Abby,
I suspect that your T-Mobile phone isn’t compatible with the ATT 3G network. I have a older T-Mobile HTC phone with the same issue. You can switch your account to the Straight Talk T-mobile SIM and I bet you would get 3G. If you have the Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM you can switch your service from their web site. It’s free, and usually goes throught quickly.
      Regards
      Bob

Have HTC Verizon phone mod# ADR6410LVW, running4.0.4, has straight talk 4glte sim but only get edge service ?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Dustin,
This is a Verizon phone and you are trying to use it with an Straight Talk ATT or Straight Talk TMobile SIM. If you activate it on straight talk’s verizon network you should get 3G service. Unless something has changed recently, verizon hasn’t opened it’s 4G LTE network to the prepaid companies yet.
      Regards

    Hello,
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Proclaim on Straight Talk. My phone operates with Android 2.3 and Verizon. I am not sure if it has a removable SIM, but am unable to see one inside the phone.
I am looking to replace the phone as the charging port is almost completely shot. Am I able to purchase an unlocked Samsung S3 Mini and put a Straight Talk SIM in it?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Emily,
It should be possible, you want to plan this out though.
You are currently using the ST Verizon network. You want to make sure the att network has good coverage where you live, work, or plan to use your phone if you are thinking about switching to the ST att network.
You are also going to want to transfer your ST service to the new phone. You may need to call straight talk to transfer from their Verizon network to their att network. Transferring from and old att phone and new att phone or old Verizon phone to new Verizon phone is straight forward. It’s the moving between networks that will require their help.

Finally the s3 mini. If you move to the ST att network I’d recommend getting a phone that supports 4g LTE. I’m not sure if there is an s3 mini that supports LTE. Watch out for unlocked international versions that only support 3G. The unlocked nexus 5 and moto x are pretty cool phones. The moto g is really nice too, it inexpensive, but only 3G. LTE provides the fastest data speeds, that is why I recommend it.

Let me know if you would like more help. I’d also love to hear how things go.

      Regards
      Bob

i have a htc droid dna that i switch from verizon to straight talk. and evey since i switched carriers i can’t send or receive pictures. can anyone help??? please?????

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi J. IMHAUSEN,
You left your comment on a page for the meant for iPhone users. Are you using your phone on the Straight Talk ATT or Verizon network?
Did you put a SIM card in it?

My guess is you are using it on the Verizon network. Your phone is supposed to set up data and mms correctly when you activated it by dialing *22890 or whatever sequence you dialed when you activated your phone.

When you look in the settings for your phone can you see the APN settings?
      Regards
      Bob

I have just installed chompsms (texting app) on my straight talk LG Optimus showtime. I cannot receive or send mms messages. I have tried different variations of APN’s. cannot get any to work. This phone use the verizon network. Any ideas??

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Sam,
The APN settings on this site are for straight talk phones using their att and tmobile sims, not straight talk Verizon phones. The apns for Verizon phones are supposed to get set automatically when you activate the phone by dialing *22890.
You can try that. You should remove any apns you added to the phone beforehand.

One reader told me to use the values below. I never tried that because I don’t have a straight talk phone on Verizon.
the mms settings for go sms to get it working on straight talk verizon are as follows.

mmsc: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms?X-VZW-MDN=(your 10 digit phone number) ((EXAMPLE http://mms.vtext.com/servlet/mms?X-VZW-MDN=1234567890

      leave the proxy alone

      for the port its 80

I can send mms but can’t download mms I gabe a Chinese Android 4.2 with straight talk

  25. Molly | |

Hi! I just ported my Verizon number over to an AT&T sim card today and got everything all set up with Straight Talk. Put the sim card in an unlocked Samsung S3 Mini. I can make and receive phone calls, send and receive mms messages, got the data work, and receive sms messages. However, I can’t seem to send text messages. Is there something else I can do to get that to work?
    Thanks

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Molly,
These data and mms settings don’t affect SMS. You can ask a friend to try putting your SIM in their phone. Try sending and receiving MMS. If it works then maybe you need to do some resets on your phone. If it doesn’t work, you may need to call Straight Talk.

Let me know, if its your phone I can walk you through some resets to try.
      Regards
      Bob

      • Molly | |

Thanks for the fast response! A factory reset took care of most of my problems. Now the only thing I can’t do is dowbload the mms messages. My settings are:
        APN: tfdata
        Port: 80
        Mmsc: http://mms-tf.net
        Mms proxy: 66.209.11.33
        Mms port: 80
        Mcc: 310
        Mnc: 410
        Authentication type: pap
        Apn type: default, supl, mms

Pretty standard. Any nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated (:

        • E Mills | |

I am using the at&t galaxy mega on straight talk and have mms working. Most of your APN settings are the same as mine, here are the ones that are different:

          MMSC= http://mms-tf.net:80

          MMS Proxy= mms3.tracfone.com

          Authentication type = is blank

          APN type= default, supl,mms,hipri,fota

After making these changes restart your phone.

          Hope this helps.

      • Heather | |

Hi, can someone help me. I bought the verizon galaxy s4 and when I was looking at it everything including mms worked. The girl did a reset on the phone and now I am able to send pic messages, get internet, make and receive calls and text messages. I put the settings in that straight talk said to and have the at&t sim through straight talk in but the phone is verizon. I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. Someone please help me.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi Heather,
What is wrong with that girl? Does she just go around resetting people’s phones? LOL..
Ok. Here is the deal. I have yet to actually find out the straight talk APN settings for Verizon and sprint phones because they are supposed to get set automatically when you activate the phone.

Try removing the APN you created. The dial *22890 or whatever sequence you dialed when you activated your phone. Let me know how it goes.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Heather | |

Hi Bob, that is not doing anything and actually takes away my ability to have internet and being able to send mms. She reset it because her info was on it but I traded her an iphone 5 and she has no problems with it. The only thing I can’t do is download my mms on the phone. I love the phone but want to be able to receive pic messages. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

          • Heather | |

I am using the at&t sim card through straight talk though on the verizon phone. Everything worked perfect before she reset it and she supposedly can’t remember what she had the apn as

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Heather,
Ok, I thought you were using the straight talk Verizon network. I am a little confused. Was this girl using this Verizon phone with a Straight talk att sim? Are you saying you put your sim in this phone to test it before you traded?

which model S4 is this? You might find you have limited compatibility using this Verizon phone on the att network. That is not to say it won’t work but I don’t think it supports all the radio frequencies to work well.

Sometimes you need to tweak them a little. Also I will tell you in the last month I have had many messages from straight talk customers having trouble receiving mms.

Do you know how to set up the APN on the s4? Take a look at my nexus 5 guide. It should be pretty similar.
How to Set up Net10 Wireless Data and MMS on Your Nexus 5 Running Android 4.4.

Try resetting your phone before you start.

Let me know how it goes.

    Hi Bob,

I ported my Sprint Samsung galaxy s3 over to straight talk via the byop program. I am able to receive picture text mess but unable to send them. This phone from Sprint doesn’t have a sim card and is a cdma phone. I have been on the phone with customer service and the said as that as long as i have data (3/4g)and i can make calls they CAN’T guarantee the picture texts being sent. They had me text a picture from my phone to myself. I have a time and date stamp from that text and no error message but my phone didn’t notify me that i received a text mess. I have sent pic texts out since thanksgiving and NO ONE has received them (again all the “sent” pic texts have a date and time stamp). I pray that you are able to help me PLEASE!

    • andrea | |

I forgot to mention that my regular text mess go through without a problem. I am able to get online, make and receive phone calls, and receive pic texts. I just can’t send a pic text.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Andrea,
I can try to help you but I don’t have any experience with Straight Talk CDMA phones. Most of the people that come here for help are using Straight Talk on T-Mobile and ATT.

In the past two weeks I have received many comments about MMS problems on Straight Talk. Most people are having problems receiving MMS but can send them.
Can you tell me if you are able to see the APN settings on your phone?

      Bob

      • andrea | |

No because its a cdma phone.

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi Andrea,
I just checked a Verizon Galaxy S3. I can see the APN settings. Settings->More Settings->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names-> APNs screen. You dont have an APNs screen?
          Regards
          Bob

          • andrea | |

No I don’t have that screen. My phone is from Sprint.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Andrea,
I am curious, how far down on this path can you go? Do you have the Mobile Networks screen?
            Settings->More Settings->Mobile Networks

Also I am wondering did you need to dial *22890 when you activated your phone?
            Regards
            Bob

          • andrea | |

Yes i have a mobile networks screen. Under that category i have 3 choices: 1. mobile data and that box is checked. 2. Network mode with the option of preferred netork mode (LTE/CDMA or just CDMA)- and I have LTE/CDMA chekec off. 3. Connections optimizer and that screen is checked. I had to dial ##72786# when i activated my phone.

And Bob i just want to take this time to THANK YOU for trying to help me regardless of the outcome.

            Andrea:)

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hey Andrea,
you are welcome. I’d try dialing that activation number again. My understanding is that with the CDMA phones they push the network settings are part of this problem. I don’t know it will help, it’s what I would do if it was my phone.

    Hi,
I just got a samsung galaxy s3 4gLTE the other day. My carrier is straight talk. I can not send or get MMS. I have tried everything. When I go to mobile networks it gives me the option for preferred network mode. I have two, one is LTE/CDMA and the other is CDMA. when I choose the first my phone shuts off and comes back on and I see the 4G at the top but it will not let me on the web or send mms. I can get text and make calls only…. When I choose CDMA the phone shuts off and come back on and I see 3G at the top. I can then get on the web but still not get or send MMS. I have reset the phone to factory settings and still have the same problem. Please help this is starting to make my head hurt. lol

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Stephanie,
Maybe I can help you, but I am unclear about your phone. Where did you get it? Did you buy it from Straight Talk? buy it someplace else? Or are you bringing it from AT&T or T-Mobile? Did you put a SIM card in this phone? Can you tell me the exact model of your phone?

I know its a lot of questions. I am trying to figure out whether your Straight Talk phone / account is using the ATT, TMobile or Verizon network.

Let me know an maybe I can help.

      Regards
      Bob

i hve been having a issue with the apn on my t-mobile galaxy s2 that i switched over…i figured out that if i used it on my home wifi network it would stop sending pics if i turn the wifi off and rebooted it worked fine….but only if i leave the wifi turned off so is there a fix for that?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Thaze,
I have heard about this problem before. I don’t have a solution. I’ll take a look to see what I can find.

hi bob, i have a samsung galaxy s2 from straight talk and i just flashed a cm rom android 4.2.2 today. it deleted my apn settings which were
    name – AT&T MVNO
    APN – wap.tracfone.com
    proxy – att2.tracfone.com
    port – 80
    mmsc – http://mmsc.cingular.com
    mms proxy – att2.tracfone.com
    mms port – 80
    mcc – 310
    mnc – 410
apn type – internet + mms + supl
these are exactly typed as they were in my phone. when i flashed the rom over, my phone now believes it is a SGH-I777 because that is what the rom was for(but it works for both) and it also says that my ip address in unavailable, and my serial number is unknown, i dont know if that would matter. but i have called straight talk and tried to get apn settings from them, but they didnt work, i have also tried the old settings as well as many others from different sites including this one and nothing. im not able to use my mobile network, and im not able to send or recieve mms.
    my current apn settings are
    name – straight talk
    apn – ATT.MVNO
    MMSC – http://mmsc.cingular.com
    mms proxy – 66.209.11.33
    mms port – 80
    mcc – 310
    mnc – 410
    apn protocol – IPv4
    apn roaming protocol – IPv4
any help would be greatly appreciated

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Colton,
I assume you have voice and sms working? If not, you need to talk to Straight Talk. If you do, I suggest deleting all the APN settings on your phone. Add a new APN, name it, and add only the APN. Try tfdata. Test data. If it doesn’t work then try att.mvno, and wap.tracfone and see if one of those values work. Focus on data, leave MMS for after.

      Let me know.

      Regards
      Bob

      • colton | |

wow fast feedback! i thank you for that. i also have in my system settings/quick settings panel a network modes option to 2g|2g+3g a 2g|3g and a 2g|3g|2g+3g, any idea what i should most likely choose? im about to try what you told me.

      • colton | |

        sweeeeeeeet! wap.tracfone worked!!

        • colton | |

oh and to answer your pevious question, i could make calls and send and receive texts, but i couldnt send or receive picture messages

          • colton | |

i believe i got my mms working correctly. i sent a picture to myself from the same phone, and i got the picture. i used the following:
            name – straight talk
            apn – wap.tracfone
            mmsc – http://mmsc.cingular.com
            mms proxy – 66.209.11.32
            mms port – 80
            mcc – 310
            mnc – 410
            apn protocol – IPv4
            apn roaming protocol – IPv4
you are the bomb man, thank you so much. i was worried that i would have to sacrifice something to go from the old gingerbread to jelly bean. now i couldnt be happier. i wish the best for you and everyone else on this thread on solving their apn problems. have a happy thanksgiving.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Colton,
That is great news. I am glad to hear you up and running.

I am having trouble along these lines with my husband’s phone. It’s an unlocked motorola atrix with straight talk SIM. At first he was able to send and receive texts and data, but after playing with the settings for him to be able to receive picture messages he now only gets data and incoming texts. Please help! I currently have the original at&t apns reloaded and it’s still not working. I’m so frustrated I could scream.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Kim,
Many Straight Talk customers are having trouble receiving MMS. Is this your situation? Data works? SMS works in both directions? Can send MMS and group texts but not receive them?
      Let me know
      Regards
      Bob

      • Kim | |

His phone will not allow him to send text or picture messages. He can receive text messages, but not picture messages. I have restored the old AT&T settings and still same problem. Data seems to be working just fine.

        • Bob Thompson | |

So you are using att.mvno or tfdata APN? You probably have the same issue everyone else is having. There may be a few things to try. Try having him send an mms to his own phone number and see if he gets it. Let me know.
          Regards
          Bob

          • Kim | |

His phone “claims” to have sent the message, but it did not receive the message. The settings are for wap.cingular. These are the settings that came in the phone programming I guess. I have tried Straight talk’s settings and still have the same problem. I have looked at multiple forums and changed settings and nothing works.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Kim.
That does not sound correct. Add a new APN to the phone for straight talk. Set the name to ST. Set the APN to tfdata. Save the APN. Make sure it is active and restart the phone. Turn off wifi and test the data. If data doesn’t work edit the APN, and try att.mvno, and finally wap.tracfone. Let me now which one gets his data working and I can give you a set of mms settings to try.
            Regards
            Bob
            Regards
            Bob

          • Kim | |

I added the tfdata apn and the data works now. I can receive texts, but cannot send.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Kim
If you can’t send text messages, that isn’t a good sign. The APN and MMS settings are for data, picture messages, and group texts. If voice and SMS have a problem, you usually need to call Net10 or ST. You can complete the set up by going back into the settings and editing the APN you added. You will need to add the MMS proxy (mms3.tracefone.com), the mms proxy port (80) and the MMSC (http://mms-tf.net). Save the settings. Restart the phone.

Let me know how it goes.
            Regards
            Bob

          Port: 80
          MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
          MMS proxy: mms2.tracfone.com
          MCC: 310
          MNC: 410
          APN Protocol: IPv4

Also try an app called Offline SIM from the Google Play store. I have not used it, a reader told me it worked for her though.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank You Bob for your quick reply. I tried both the setting with no results. I also removed the battery and SIM card after each reset if that would be any help for you. Also, on the 1st setting posted. By default I had to enter 3 digits on the MCC and MNC to save. I used.
          MCC: 310
          MNC: 410
Thank You in advance again for your help. Really great to have guys like you out there.. Ken
