How to Setup Straight Talk Data and MMS for your Android or other Smartphone

These help pages show you how to set up your data, internet, MMS picture messages, and group texts for Straight Talk and Net10 Wireless using their AT&T-compatible network or T-Mobile-compatible network.  They explain how to set up your phone’s APN settings.

Check the APN guides to see if we have a complete guide for your specific phone. If not these help pages, while not as detailed, may be enough to help.

These pages will not help you if your phone is using Straight Talk or Net10 Wireless’ Verizon-compatible or Sprint-compatible networks.

Thank you for replying to my melt down the other day. So, here’s some advice for people who buy a byop from straight talk, I do have well had a Motorala droid razor 4g LTE,okay like I said I went step by step per instruction even got a conformation on the step where you enter MEID number for compatibility, and was instructed to use a SIM card, APN settings were set up with wi-fi off. So after all of this and buying the byop I get notified from Straight Talk that they are no way and I REPEAT NO WAY TO CONVERT A 4-G LTE VERIZON PHONE.THEY DO NOT USE SIM CARDS!! AND SHE STATED THAT EVEN IF THEY ARE UNLOCKED GSM PHONES FROM VERIZON THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO CONVERT THE PHONE OR PHONES. AND YES I ASKED WHAT IF I HAD ACTIVATED THE CDMA CARD WOULD THAT HAD MADE A DIFFRENCE? ANSWER IS NO!!!!!!!! I was quite upset cause like I explained to her the site guided me and I even walked her through it and showed her it changed my serial number and gave me a phone number, the site is not accurate! I STRONGLY ADVISE THAT IF YOU BUY A BYOP PLAN THAT YOU CALL THE ACTUAL STRAIGHT TALK NUMBER TO MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU ACTIVATE YOUR PHONE AND MAKE SURE THE PHONE YOU ARE TRYING TO CHANGE OVER IS LEGITIMATELY COMPATIBLE!!!! CAUSE YOU PAY $60.00 FOR THE BYOP PLAN, WELL IF YOU ARE LIKE ME AND DO IT VIA INTERNET YOU MISE WELL HAVE JUST BOUGHT YOU A STRAIGHT TALK PHONE AND A ACTIVATION CARD, CAUSE YOU ARE NOT LIKE ME SAVING ANY MONEY BY TRYING TO SWITCH YOUR OLD PHONE. SO IN CONCLUSION i AM ABLE NOW TO SUPPLY STRAIGHT TALK WITH SOME MORE MONEY NOW CAUSE I WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE THE SIM CARD I WAS INSTRUCTED TO ACTIVATE OUTTA THE RZR AND INSERT IT IN A T-MOBILE OR AT&T PHONE, OR ANY OTHER PHONE GSM UNLOCKED THAT IS NOT VERIZON AND THEY WERE SO KIND TO GIVE ME A REFERENCE NUMBER REIMBURSTMENT FOR WHEN I CAN GET A COMPATIBLE PHONE. SO I HAVE ACTIVATED PHONE NUMBER,SIM CARD, AND NO PHONE AND THE DAYS ARE STILL BEING COUNTED ON THE DATE I SO CALLED ACTIVATED MY BYOP…. SO IF YOU WANT TO WASTE &60.00 AND GO OUT AND ACTIVATE A SIM CARD, FOR NO GENERAL PURPOSE WHATSOEVER THEN I RECOMMEND JUST SETTING FIRE TO YOUR MONEY, WHY NOT? EITHER WAY YOU GOT NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT, I HONESTLY BELIEVE SETTING MONEY ON FIRE WOULD HAVE BEEN ALOT LESS AS AGGRAVATING CAUSE AT LEAST BY ME SETTING IT ON FIRE I AM WILLFULLY SQUANDERING MONEY AWAY, AND NOT BEING MISLED TO BE WHAT I FEEL IS A SMALL MARKETING STRATEGY BY AN AGGREVATING PROCESS TO BENEFIT A LARGE SCALE BUSINESS. I HOPE THIS INFORMATION IS AT LEAST HELPFUL! AND I APPRECIATE YOU BOB AND ALL OTHER PARTICIPANTS FOR HELPING AND TRYING TO BENEFIT THESE TYPE OF THINGS. I BELIEVE I WOULD RATHER JUST SEND YOU MONEY AT LEAST I KNOW THAT MY MONEY WASN’T JUST WASTED THAT YOU ALL ARE ACTUALLY HELPING PEOPLE TO KEEP THESE THINGS FROM HAPPENING AND ARE NOT BENEFITING FROM IT AT ALL, EXCEPT FOR SHOWS THEY ARE DECENT HELL JUST PUT IT THIS WAY REAL PEOPLE. CAUSE YOU GOTTA BE REAL WHEN YOU DO THINGS FOR PEOPLE OUTTA KINDNESS WITH NO ALTERNATIVE MOTIVE. SO SORRY FOR MYVENTING SOUNDING IRRATIONAL AND PISSED OFF. I APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE.

Hello, i have a t-mobile samsung galaxy s blaze 4g and have had it for over a year now. when i first got it i installed the tmobile straighttalk sim card and entered the apn given to me amd everything worked great. a few months ago i upgraded the software to the android 4.0.4 version. I entered the same apn that I had previously used and everything works just as before except for the MMS. I have tried numerous things but nothing seems to work. please help?!

      • Shannon | |

Bob, you seem extremely knowledgable in setting these up. I need assistance(help in a bad way).lol. Anyway, here’s what I’ve done I have a droid rzr 4.1.2. It used to be contract through Verizon, it had no longer been in service when I decided to convert it to straight talk byop. I’m so frustrated, I used the dual SIM standard or micro compatible with T-mobile,for GSM or unlocked phones. I did everything step by step, including APN settings. On my Internet account it gave me a phone number, but I cannot make a test call or call out. The phone states thebSIM card is from unknown source. No Service. Please help

        • Bob Thompson | |

          Hi Shannon,
I am not sure what the issue is. This doid razor was a Verizon phone, right ? can you tell me the exact model number so I can look up the specs? If possible find a friend with a phone that has the same size SIM using ATT or TMobile. Put the SIM in the phone and see if it works, at least for calls.

Let me know and I will try to help.

          Regards
          Bob

Is the Sprint iPhone 5s compatible with Straight Talk? I want to get the 5s but I’m going off to college in a year and may have to leave my Sprint plan and use straight talk. I don’t want to buy a phone I will only be able to use for a year. Any thoughts?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Jordan,
As far as I know, you cannot use the sprint 5s with straight talk. You can use the sprint iPhone 4 and 4s with Straight Talk’s Sprint network. In a year, however, then the iPhone 5s isn’t the latest model that may change.

      Regards,
      Bob

I have a motorola Droid Pro. I’ve switched it to straight talk but I cannot receive mms. I can send just fine and texting works properly. I also have internet access. I’ve tried a couple different APNs but nothing works…..

  16. abby | |

I had this same problem when i got my new phone. I know this may sound silly but have you put your old phone in airplane mode? That might be the problem.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Abby,
      thanks for sharing the tip.

    • Brittany Honey | |

I put my old phone on airplane mode and I still cannot receive mms….

      • Bob Thompson | |

        Ni Britney,
What type of phone? Did you enter your APN settings?

If you just signed up for Straight Talk and you transferred your phone number, it might take a few days to receive MMS. I recently set up three straight talk accounts. I could receive MMS immediately for the two accounts with new phone numbers. It took several days to start receiving MMS for the account with the transferred phone number. when I setup up the account, I tried the SIM in two different phones and could not receive MMS. I gave up and decided to look at it again a few days later, only to find it had started working.

You’ll still need to make sure you have entered your APN settings into your phone correctly. You can also try entering an APN type of default, internet, wap. Some people still have to adjust their APN settings to get it to work. Read these two articles AND the comments to see the different MMSC and MMS Proxy settings that have worked for others.

Hello Bob, I have a Motorola Droid Pro. I have been with straight talk since January, it’s been 6 days since I transferred my phone number to this new phone. I have tried a few different APNs not sure which is correct none have worked that I’ve tried. I also downloaded the Tweakker app since it had worked for my previous phone but did not work for my Droid Pro. The default APN is locked and I cannot delete it…. The network mode is set to Global but has options for CDMA and GSM/UMTS. I can only access the APN options if its in GSM/UMTS mode. Again I do not know the correct APN for my phone. I’m not exactly savvy with this type of thing so I need help. Thank you.

          • Bob Thompson | |

            Hi Brittany,
Are you using a SIM card in this phone? do you know which Straight Talk network you are using?

  17. Derek | |

I need help.. I activated my account, and put in the SIM card in my Droid Razr M, but I can’t make any calls..

  18. Michelle | |

I purchased an Samsung Galaxy S4 active new and unlocked. It is on the At&T network. I previously had a old phone on straight talk so, I ported my number over to the new phone. I am now able to make and receive calls on the new phone but, when I send a message from my new phone, the response comes on my old phone. When a message is sent to me, I am able to receive plain text messages on the new phone but am unable to download picture messages. An employee from Walmart set my APN settings. Help!!!

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Michelle,
Was your old phone a Straight talk phone? Can you still make phone calls on it? Do you know what network the old phone was on? what type of phone is your old phone?

When you port your number from to Straight Talk from another company, you are often temporarily assigned a new number. You can make calls from the new number, but the port isn’t complete until the old phone is dead.

Let me know the details and I might be able to help.

      Regards
      Bob

      • Michelle | |

Hi Bob, Thanks for replying to me. My old problems seem to have resolved only to leave me with new ones.. The new phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 active through AT&T) is on straight talk. It is a new, unlocked phone. I am unable to receive texts from anyone on Verizon. Everything else seems to work. I have contacted straight talk and AT&T with no resolution. I believe the sim card is a Tracfone sim card bought that was sold to me via walmart electronics department.

Hi. I recently set my Droid RAZR M907 up with straight talk, using RadioCOMM. Well, straight talk kicks in and out every 5min or so. And data only reads “E”. It was M+, but it changed. I’m using the T-Mobile sim. I have the straight talk APN all set up. But the data does not last on for more than 5 min. Then cuts out. Plus says I’m roaming sometimes. Any suggestions?

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Byran,
Your Razr is a Verizon network phone, but it also has some compatibility with the att and tmobile network. The E means Edge, which is 2G data. Did you mean M+ or H+? Sounds like you are not getting decent coverage on Straight Talk’s tmobile network. You can transfer your service to their att network or possible even their Verizon network. Did you use this phone on Verzion in the past?
      Regards
      Bob

  20. Bekah | |

    Hi,
I switched my ATT LG-E980 over, and it was working fine (thanks to your help) until I did the update to KitKat 4.4 the other day. It’s not letting me receive picture messages, but I can send them fine. I also noticed it’s lagging quite a bit and saying my regular texts weren’t sent, but will go through shortly after. Any way I can resolve these errors? The update is so new that there’s not a lot of info out yet.
    Thanks!
    Bekah

    • Bekah | |

Ok, now it’s not letting me send them either…

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Bekah,
I am not sure. I don’t have an E980 myself. I seem to recall these ATT E980s having issues in general. I think the firmware updates come from ATT so that could be it. I’d start my going into the APN Settings, performing a Reset to Defaults, then delete any APNs that appear. Create a new APN, and enter your settings.
Let me know how it goes.

      Regards
      Bob

      Hi Jenifer,
Are you using the Straight Talk t-Mobile SIM? From your APN screen, restore your APN to defaults, delete any APNs that appear and create a new APN
Let me know how it goes.

Hi, I am currently using a Samsung Captivate glide through straight talk bring your own phone and I am having troubles dowloading my mms. I used the recommended apn settings and nothing works. Please help!

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Kaisa,
If you recently signed up for Straight Talk and transferred your phone number it may take a few days before you can receive MMS picture messages. I had the same issue. I set up three Straight Talk accounts. MMS worked fine for the two with new phone numbers. I could not receive MMS for the third, the one I transferred a number to. I tried the SIM in two different phone and it did not work. After a few days I decided to see if I could try to fix it, only to find it working.

This is a common problem. You can also try setting your APN type to default, internet, wap or default, internet, supl. Some readers have had luck by trying different MMSC and MMS proxy values. Read both the following articles and the comments to see what has worked for others.

Help with Straight Talk and Net10 MMS Picture Messages and I Can’t Receive MMS Picture Messages Using Straight Talk or Net10 on My iPhone Using iOS 7.0.4

Why won’t my straight talk galaxy s3 update itself to the 4g and 4.3 thts supposed to be with my phone after I pay 45.00 dollars every month for it an not get it…. Please help me out with this matter……

Thank you for ur time in this matter……. Wesley stephens….

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Wesley,
Are you are asking two questions?
why won’t my phone update to Android 4.3?
I don’t know. Usually its the carrier that releases Android updates and Straight Talk doesn’t do this. But your S3 is likely running on the Straight Talk’s Sprint compatible network so you might see an update from Sprint. I found this thread on facebook
https://www.facebook.com/StraightTalkWireless/posts/10151666752852569 Be careful, I also find this article that says the S3 has problems with 4.3. http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2014/03/24/galaxy-s3-crying-out-for-android-4-4-update-as-4-3-fails/

      Why don’t I get 4G LTE?
If you bought your Samsung Galaxy S3 from Straight Talk and it was advertised as being a 4G LTE phone, then it running on Straight Talk’s Sprint compatible network. There needs to be 4G LTE coverage in the Sprint network wherever you live, work or are using your phone. Does your phone ever get 4G LTE? also look in the settings and you may see a preferred network type. Make sure it is set to LTE, that might help.

      Regards
      Bob

I have a Droid Incredible 4G LTE (ADR6410LVW). Your site has helped me many times before but i cant seem to get anywhere with this phone. I get web only on Edge depending on the apn settings i input, but cant send pics on any of them. I receive picture msgs but i am unable to download them. I have tried all the apn settings i can think of and have researched the web for some help but i havent been able to get anywhere. Any ideas or history with this device? Whatever you can help with would be greatly appreciated.

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Orlando,
You may only be getting Edge because this is a Verizon phone and has limited compatibility with the att and tmobile networks. Are you using the the Straight Talk AT&T network-compatible SIM or the Straight Talk T-Mobile network-compatible SIM?

Which settings are you currently using?

You can also try to set the APN type as default, mms, wap for the ATT SIM and mms, supl for the T-Mobile SIM

You don’t. Your phone either uses the Straight Talk Sprint network or Straight Talk Verizon network. You need to make sure you have a phone that is going to be activated on the network you want before you sign up.

I want to swap a htc droid 4g lte android 4.0 jelly bean os verizon to straight talk, can I do that, I use straight talk verizon now

    • Bob Thompson | |

      Hi Darlene,
I am not sure what you are asking. Are you saying you want to take a HTC Droid phone from the Verizon network and transfer your service from your current Straight Talk Verizon phone to the HTC? Let me know.
I have never done this. My guess is you’ll have to register the Verizon phone on the Straight Talk Verizon network. They charge you $10 or $15 dollars to do that. Once registered on the network. You should be able to transfer your current service to the new phone. Also, note, you will not get 4G LTE service with this phone because Straight Talk’s Verizon network doesn’t support it.

      Regards
      Bob

I am having issues with data. Internet pages will only load occasionally and when they do, it is at a snail’s pace. If I attempt to download anything from the play store, it downloads at .2 mb a sec. My husband has a Samsung through straighttalk that runs off AT&T towers and has no problems downloading or opening internet pages so I do not think it is the service in this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Hi Samantha,
If you look in your your status bar, you should be able to see a network indicator that shows if you are getting an lte, H, 3G, or E. This will tell you if you are connecting connecting to a slow network.

Also is it possible you re using the straight talk tmobile sim? Do you know what color plastic card. It came on?

      Regards
      Bob

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly!
My status bar says 4g but nothing is loading for me (apps or internet pages).
I used the ‘bring your own phone’ program through straighttalk and entered the info for my motorola atrix to determine what sim card I needed. The sim card came attached to a blue plastic card.
        Thanks for the help!!

I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play that was through AT&T but changed it to my straight talk service and got a straight talk SIM card.. I can talk and text with it but I can’t send or recieve SMS messages and I can’t get on the internet. When I do it tells me there is no internet connection. I have put in the APN codes for both data and SMS but still can’t get them to work. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

      Hi Mary,
I don’t know. Which phone are you using. On some devices they expect you to view or scroll through the entire agreement before you can accept it. Let me know which model blackberyy you have.

      Regards
      Bob
