Keeping Tracfone Triple Minutes When You Change Phones

Can you keep your trip (3X) tracfone minutes when you switch to a new phone? Recently I’ve been been asked this question by a number of readers and viewers so I thought I’d write this article.

First I want to say, that I have not personally done this. That is, transferred my service from a tracfone phone with 3X minutes to a new phone, so can only share with you what Tracfone has said and what other readers have reported. I suspect you won’t truly know until you transfer to a new phone and find out for yourself.

Understand that for many years Tracfone offered triple minute plans. So if say you bought a plan with 400 minutes, 400 texts, and 400mb of data, you’d actually get 1200 minutes, 1200 text, and 1200mb of data. The also advertised triple minutes for life. The “triple minutes fo life” offer applied to the life of the phone. This meant if you bought a new phone that didn’t qualify for triple minutes and transferred your service to it you would: 1: Keep all the triple minutes you have already accumulated but 2, no longer get triple minutes on any future plan purchases.
Note that for at least the last year or so, Tracfone has stopped selling phones that qualify for triple minutes for life.

So under normal circumstances you keep the triple minutes you already purchased but would your minutes would no longer triple on future plan purchases.

However, I’ve had a few people report that Tracfone has told them they would still get 3X minutes in come cases. Recently, Tracfone has been telling customers they need to get a new phone becuase there old phone will stop working when they update their network by the end of 2020. For more about that see Tracfone Says I Need a New Phone. The explanation was that you are “grandfathered” into triple minutes because you were forced to update your phone. Please note that I have not verified this. Nor have I had any reader later report that they added a new plan to their new phone and received triple minutes.

I wish Tracfone’s policies were more clearly stated on tracfone.com. I hear many different and conflicting reports from my readers about what they have been told as well as what actually happed to them.

So what can you do? You can ask Tracfone customer service if you’ll continue to qualify for triple minute plans. You could also add a triple minute plan at the time you ask them to make sure you do in fact received triple minutes.

My advice is to consider adding additional triple minute plans before you switch to your new phone. Those minutes will carry over to your new phone so you can load up before you make the switch. You might also consider adding the $50 365 Service Days Add-On if you qualify. This add on gives you 365 more service days but no minutes. Its a great option for people that are carrying a balance of 1000s of used minutes. I suspect many people are going to have this same question as many Tracfone customers will need to upgrade their phones in 2020, see Tracfone Says I Need a New Phone

Finally, I’m going to ask you to share your experience. Did you switch to a new phone in 2020? Did tracfone tell your new phone would still be able to add triple minutes? What happened when you finally added a plan? Leave a reply below and share. I encourage people to share their experiences here as it helps out others with the same questions.
