Moving a SIM from a Samsung Galaxy S4 to a iPhone 5

A reader, Stephanie, asks

I have a Samsung galaxy s4 att using straight talk. If I wanted to switch to an iPhone 5 c could I use the same sim card I have in my android and just change the APN settings?

Hi Stephanie,

The SIM in your Galaxy S4 is too big to fit in an iPhone 5. The S4 uses a micro SIM but the  iPhone 5 uses a nano SIM.

Solving this problem is easy. Order a new nano SIM from the Straight Talk web site, I think it’s $7. From the Straight Talk web site, you can transfer your service from your current micro SIM to the new nano SIM for the iPhone 5.

At that point your iPhone 5, should set up the APN automatically.  The iPhone 5 will hide your APN settings screen any time their is any att network SIM in it, so if  you have a problem, come back to smartphonematters and you can find help to fix the problem.

I also strongly recommend you buy a package of SIM adapters. The SIM adapters will allow you to convert your new nano SIM to a micro SIM or mini SIM. If you wanted to put the new nano SIM in your S4 again, the nano to micro SIM adapter will make it fit.  The adapters are not expensive. It’s worth keeping some on hand if you ever need to change phones. I added a link below to the adapters I use. The are currently $1.45 shipped. If for some reason you ever need to change phones unexpectedly, you’ll have the right adapter to make your SIM fit another phone. I added a link below to the adapters I use.

Finally, be advised that while the Verizon model iPhone 5 will work with a Straight Talk ATT SIM, you will not get 4G LTE. That model phone only supports LTE on the Verizon network. The Verizon iPhone 5s and 5c should get LTE. And finally, the ATT and Tmobile iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s will get LTE. The T-mobile models need to be unlocked to use them with the Straight Talk ATT SIM.

Here is a link for SIM adapters on Amazon. I have used this brand before and they work. Sometimes the SIM adapters shipped aren’t an exact match as the one in the pictures but that should be fine.
