A YouTuber, Kevin, asks…
I dropped my phone getting out of my truck, cracked the screen. Anyway I am already on trac phone, can I buy a unlocked phone or trac phone and pull the sim card outta my old trac phone and put the sim in a new phone and still keep my remaining 500 minutes on my sim card?
The correct way to do this is to get a new phone and SIM card and then transfer your number and balance from your current phone to the new phone. You’d do this from the My Account section on tracfone.com or simply choose the activate option. As part of activating your new phone, tracfone will ask if you want to keep or transfer your current number, tracfone will realize you are currently a customer and transfer your phone number and remaining service balance to the new phone and SIM.
Keep in mind that if your current phone has triple minutes and new phone may not support triple minutes and you may not get triple minutes on later refills. The triple minute option is by phones so older ones support triple minutes for life. Something to keep in mind.
As for moving the SIM, its possible, generally not recommended as there are a bunch of details. First your current SIM would need to fit in your new phone, it might be too big or too small. If it is too small you can use an adapter to make it fit, but if it’s too big you’d have to cut the SIM and in 2019 I don’t recommend this.
Next up if your current phone uses tracfone’s ATT or T-Mobile towers moving the SIM might work. With some of their basic phones, the SIM number is tied to the phone’s serial number. You can always borrow someone elses phone and try your SIM to see if it works before buying a new phone yourself.
If your current phone uses Tracfone’s Verizon network, moving your SIM might work but the new phone really needs to be registered on their network to work properly.
Not sure what phone you are looking for, Tracfone has had some deals on iPhones the last few months if you are interested. See http://smartphonematters.com/tracfone-latest-deals·
Finally, If you are concerned about losing triple minutes if you switch to a new phone or SIM you can ask Tracfone if you will lose them. I can’t give you a definite answer, but you can always load addional trip minutes before switching to a new phone.
I hope this helps.
