Republic Wireless Unlimited Talk, Text, and 1GB Data for $20 per Month

Republic Wireless is a prepaid wireless company that offers unlimited talk, text, and data for as little as $20 per month. In a recent video I decided to check out the Republic Wireless plans and features for April 2019. Before getting started, I want to point out that this is not a review of the service. I’m going to check out the republicwireless.com to see what they have to offer and what I can learn about the service. I have not reviewed the service in the past but when I do I’ll post that review here on smarphonematters.com and on my youtube channel. On a personal note, my brother is a happy Republic Wireless customer and I’ll talk more about that a little later.

Republic Wireless is a prepaid wireless service that offers affordable cellular service for customers with modest data needs. Republic keeps their prices low by taking a innovate approach to wireless phone service. They combine the best of Wi-Fi and 4G LTE cellular service. They do this for two reasons, to offer you the best coverage possible wherever you are and to keep costs low.

The way Republic works is if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network your calls and texts will be routed over the Wi-Fi network. If Wi-Fi is not available, your calls, text, and data will use one of two 4G LTE networks. They developed their own sophisticated technology to switch back and forth seamlessly between the two depending on which will give you the best call quality. Republic Wireless phones use either the Sprint or T-Mobile 4G LTE networks.

As I mentioned earlier my brother is a happy Republic Wireless customer. He lives in upstate New York and there is no cellular coverage at his house. But because he has Wi-Fi at home, he can use his Republic service. When he leaves his home and travels to other areas his phone switches to the cellular network. He loves the fact that he can use the service for $15 per month and add data only on the few occasions he needs it.

Two Months Free Promotion

I wanted to point out that Republic currently is offering two months of service for free. This makes it easy for you to try out the service and if you find out its not right for you, you can transfer out to another wireless company. Note this is a limited time offer, check republicwireless.comfor details.

Plans

Republic Wireless offers simple and easy to understand plans. Unlimited talk and text costs $15 per month. 4G LTE data costs $5 per 1 GB. If you use up all your data within the month, you can add 1GB for an additional $5. When you sign up for your plan you choose how much data you’ll normally need. That is, very straight forward.

While Republic Wireless is an affordable option for customers with modest data needs. For $20, you’ll get unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of data which is a pretty good deal. But if are a heavy data user, Republic gets expensive. If you were to opt for 15GB of data per month your bill would be $90 per month. So if you need a significant amount or unlimited data Republic isn’t going to be the best choice for you. That said, many people have modest data needs and Republic plans are affordable. I myself typically only need between 1 and 2 GB per month, because I use Wi-Fi at home and the office.

Also note that any unused data expires at the end of the month, so when you choose the data for your plan only choose the amount you’ll know you need each month. You can always buy additional $5 data add-ons as needed.

Phones

With Republic Wireless you’ll have the choice to buy a phone directly from Republic or Bring Your Own Phone. Republic Wireless currently works with Android phones, but not iPhone. In the US a just over half of the people use Android phones so Republic is an option for those consumers. Republic sells a number of android phones from Samsung, LG, and Motorola including the latest Samsung Galaxy S10 models. They also offer affordable phones from Motorola.

You’ll also have the option to bring a phone you already own or buy a new or used phone somewhere else. You’ll need a compatible android phone. Many Samsung, Google, LG, and Motorola phones are compatible. Check republicwireless.com to see the list of compatible phones. You can also download the Republic App from the Google Play Store to check if your phone is compatible. If you want to bring your own phone, you’ll need to buy a SIM kit.

Note that some of the phones that Republic sells use the Sprint network. The BYOP SIM kits are for the T-Mobile network. If you have a concern about which network your phone will use just ask their customer service reps.

republicwireless.com FAQ, Help and Customer Service

I found republicwireless.com clean and simple with easy to understand explanations. You can find more detailed information in their Frequently Asked Questions, Help, and Support areas. Republic can guide you through the set up and ordering process with clear steps and descriptions. They integrated their FAQs into the bottom of the pages to answer questions you might have along the way.

Back in 2017, I helped my brother upgrade his Republic Wireless phone to a new Moto G5 Plus, I gave him mine. I ordered his SIM, and used the help and customer service to answer some questions I had. The reps were effective and polite. At the time, my concern was that this current phone used their Sprint network, and the new BYOP phone would use the T-Mobile network. I wad concerned that he might notice a coverage difference in the places he normally uses his phone. Customer Service assured me that if the coverage on the T-Mobile network wasn’t adequate we could request a Sprint SIM. Turns out, T-Mobile coverage was better!

Wi-Fi Calling

One of the features my readers most often ask me about is Wi-Fi calling. Wi-Fi calling lets your phone route calls and texts over the Wi-Fi network instead of the cellular network so that you can still use your phone when you have little or no cellular coverage where you are. Some prepaid wireless carriers offer this feature, others don’t. Republic has built their service around their own wi-fi calling technology so if you have wi-fi you’ll always have coverage.

Mobile Hotspot

Another feature my readers want is Mobile Hotspot. Republic Wireless offers Mobile Hotspot. Mobile Hotspot lets you connect your laptop, tablet. or other Wi-Fi device to the internet using your phone’s cellular data connection. You can use your plan’s 4G LTE data for hotspot and add more if you need it.

Conclusion

Republic Wireless is a viable choice for consumers with modest data needs. As long as you use on of their supported Android phones and use your phone is areas where either T-Mobile or Sprint have coverage, it’s an attractive option. What about you?
