Introduction
This article explains how to set up the Straight Talk Wireless att.mvno
APN on your iPhone with iOS 8 installed. The steps should also be similar for iOS 7 too. This article is only for the iPhone and Straight Talk’s AT&T compatible SIM card. The article is part of a series of articles that explain how to set up your Straight Talk APN on the iPhone. If you not sure what your APN is or which Straight Talk network you are using, see Setting up Straight Talk Wireless APN for Cellular Data, Internet, MMS Picture Messages on Your iPhone Using iOS 8.
My APN is att.mvno
If your APN is att.mvno
you will be able to access the internet using your cellular data connection. You cannot send or receive MMS picture messages or group text messages. Remain calm and keep reading. The next section describes how to set up your cellular data connection and the following one describes what to do about MMS picture messages and group texts.
Setting Up Your Cellular Data Connection
If your APN is att.mvno
you can enable your cellular data connection by installing a configuration profile that contains carrier settings. The profile will NOT set up MMS picture messages or group texts.
Below are a step-by-step instructions for installing the Straight Talk att.mvno carrier settings configuration profile.
Steps
- Tap Home
- Tap Safari
- Visit http://smartphonematters.com/st-apns
- Tap the att.mvno button
- Tap Install
- Enter your passcode code, if required
Ignore the message The authenticity of “StraightTalk” cannot be verified. - Tap Install
- Tap Install
- Tap Done
Try Using Cellular Data
Try using your cellular data to access the internet, it should work. You can also try MMS picture messages and group text messages but it’s unlikely they will work.
After setting your APN, try to:
- access the Internet using cellular data (should work)
- send and receive an MMS picture message (should not work)
- send and receive a group text message (should not work)
If you need more details or instructions to check this see Verifying Your iPhone’s Cellular Data Connection, MMS Picture Messages, and Group Text Messages.
Fixing MMS Picture Messages and Group Texts
If your APN is att.mvno
, you won’t be able to send and receive MMS picture messages or group texts. Your iPhone has automatically set your APN to a different Straight Talk APN, tfdata
. Your iPhone also hides the Cellular Data Network option in Settings > Cellular where you would normally set the APN manually so you can’t change the settings needed to send and receive MMS picture messages and group texts.
The way to fix this is to change your APN from att.mvno
to tfdata
. When your APN is tfdata
your cellular data connection, MMS picture messages, and group texts work automatically.
The only way I know to change your APN is to transfer your Straight Talk service to a new Straight Talk ATT Compatible SIM card. When you do this, your APN should change from att.mvno
to tfdata
. For detailed step-by-step instructions, click or tap Transferring Your Existing Straight Talk Service to a New Straight Talk Phone or SIM. The article will open in a new browser page, tab, or window.
Once you have transferred your service to your new SIM, follow the instruction in this article again. Your APN should be tfdata
and you should be able to get cellular data, MMS picture messages and group texts working.
Are There Any Other Ways to Fix This?
Not that I am aware of. Straight Talk can’t or won’t switch the APN for you. There used to be a trick called the SIM swap that I wrote about in previous articles but that does not work since iOS 7.1.
If your iPhone is jailbroken, you should be able to find some apps that let you set the APN directly. But I don’t have any additional information on smartphonematters.com about this. If you don’t know what jailbreaking is, I would not recommend it as a solution to this problem.
