Switching From Net10 Wireless To Straight Talk Wireless

A reader,Ephier , asks…

I have a Verizon iPhone 5c with Net10. I have 2.5 GB of LTE for $50 and the coverage in my area is great. The only real complain is that for the life of me I can’t get the MMS working, even with the SIM swap. I been thinking of transferring over to Straight Talk though since they offer 3 GB of data for 45. So my questions are whether the transfer to Straight Talk is worth it? Will I lose my LTE? There is no near Walmart in my area, so can I reup online? Basically, what will be the pros and cons if I switch? Thanks

Hi Ephier,

Switching from Net10 Wireless to Straight Talk Wireless might solve your problem, but not in the way you think.

Both Straight Talk and Net10 Wireless are both owned by the same company, America Movil. While the plans each company offers are a little different, the service is identical. the Straight Talk brand was created as an exclusive for Walmart. Target, Radio Shack, and a number of other retailers offer Net10 Wireless but Straight Talk is only available through Walmart and online.

You should still get LTE, if you are getting it with Net10. If you use prepaid cards, you can only buy them at Walmart, while Net10 cards are available at a number of retail locations. When you re-up online, you will pay both state sales tax but also pay  a 911 Service charge,  Federal Universal Service, and Regulatory Cost Recovery which for me was about $1.60 last I checked.

If you change to Straight Talk your APN settings will change and that might fix your MMS issues, it might just start working. Mine does, all our iPhones using Straight Talk and Net10 here work without SIM swap or having to install the APN profile. I think you could solve your problem by replacing your Net10 SIM with a new one. When you do this, your APN settings will change and your MMS should just start working.

I looked through the comments. You have been here before. I asked you to go to http://www.net10.com/byop_apn/index.jsp  and check your APN settings and you replied that they were

APN: wap.tracfone
PROXY: att2.tracfone.com
PORT: 80
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS PROXY: att2.tracfone.com
MMS_APN: wap.tracfone

So here is the issue. You used to be able to SIM swap and change your APN settings. This was a work around. It does not seem to work with iOS 7.1. It did with 7.0.

When you put your Net10 SIM in your iPhone, the phone sets the APN for the Net10 tfdata APN automatically, not wap.tracfone. If you transfer your service from your current SIM to a new SIM, your APN should change to tfdata and your phone should work. Transferring your service to a new SIM is fast and easy, easier than switching to Straight Talk.

It’s worth the cost of a new SIM to try, you can order a new nano SIM from the Net10 website.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.

I am currently a net10 subscriber but want to change over to a service that offers more hotspot data in their plans. Who would you recommend?

Visible uses the Verizon towers and includes unlimited hotspot with the restrictions of only one device connected at a time and a max download speed of 5Mbps. When I reviewed it they did not enforce it, but given its their policy, that can change at any moment. Verizon prepaid’s $65 plan includes unlimited hotspot but in some circumstances stances the speeds will only be 600kbps. T-Mobile post paid has some options too.

If you are trying to replace broadband internet at home (cable / fiber) with mobile hotspot you may just be disappointed in all the options available to you.

Hi! I have a unlocked mobile phone bought Thur amazon and my boyfriend went and activated it thru total wireless using net10 and at&t service and it is awful, I have always used straighttalk, can I switch the service to straighttalk? Thanks…

Yes you can use the phone with Straight Talk.
When you sign up with Straight Talk you’ll need to choose which towers to use ATT, Verizon, or T-Mobile
you’ll need to choose the one that is compatible with your phone and the one that has the best service in your area
I have used most of the tracfone brands Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Net10, Simple Mobile
service should be the same if you are using the same towers.
      Simple Mobile uses T-Mobile
      Total Wireless uses Verizon
Straight Talk uses either ATT, Verizon or T-Mobile
Net10 uses uses either ATT, Verizon or T-Mobile

Do you know which towers you want to use?

    I purchased a net 10 iPhone 5s
I want to use straight talk sim and service. Will straight talk sim work in my net ten iPhone?

    Thank you

I haven’t tried this myself but the Net10 iPhone 5s should work with Straight Talk’s ATT network. The Straight Talk iPhones work with net10 and Tracfones ATT network. If your using the ST verizon network the SIM might work, but they really want you to register the new phone’s IMEI number which may not work.

May I ask where you bought this phone and how much you paid for it? If possible consider returning it and buying the Straight Talk $129 iPhone Se which is a way better phone. Add a service plan to the cart and use the promo code ST30OFF and save 30%. You should be able to add the plan to your current Straight Talk reserve. Just make sure you don’t cancel Autopay if you are getting the $2.50 discount. See my video. There is a link in the description for the phone on Straight Talk.

Hey Bob, well in that previous post you mentioned, at that time my apn was wap.tracfone, but afterwards my apn was changed overnight. I woke up and my 3G indicator when from 3G to LTE. I then proceeded to look up my apn again, and it was affirmatively changed to tfdata. So, since my apn was already updated, can switching sim cards still fix my MMS problem? I bought two Net10 sim cards when I first swtiched, the one I use now and a spare one. Can I use the spare that was previously bought, or do I need to buy a newer one? Thanks

      Hi Ephier,
With a little luck your MMS might just work.
Remove any APN profile you may have installed.
      Tap Settings-General->Reset-Reset All Network Settings
      test data
      test sending and receiving MMS.
See the guide to learn how to remove the APN profile and the steps to properly test data and MMS
How to Set up Net10 Web, Data, and MMS for Your iPhone Running iOS 7

Let me know how it goes.
