A reader, Ashleigh, asks
I have an iphone 4 with verizon that is currently off. How do I get straight talk?
I have never tried to activate a Verizon iPhone 4 on Straight Talk Wireless. Straight Talk claims that will not do this, but I have read people claiming to have done it.
Let me explain the issue. We use two type of cellular networks in the USA, GSM and CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM technology. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. You may heard about people bringing their iPhone to Straight Talk. This works for iPhones that use GSM. You buy a Straight Talk SIM, activate the SIM, put it in your iPhone, and you are ready to go. You need an iPhone that supports GSM to do this. Your Verizon iPhone 4 does not. It does not even have a SIM slot. (the Verizon iPhone 4s and iPhone 5, 5c,and 5s do).
Straight Talk doesn’t own their a Cellular network. The buy airtime in bulk from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint. They do this so they can support customers in all regions. Straight Talk also supports Bring Your Own CDMA Phone using the Verizon and Sprint network. Unfortunately, they state on their web site that they won’t activate Verizon iPhones on their Verizon network. The iPhone’s that Straight Talk sells actually use the Verizon network. They have never explained why they won’t allow you to bring your own Verizon iPhone, but we think it’s because Verizon does not want them to.
Now if you search the Internet, you will find people claiming they are using the Verizon iPhone 4 on Straight Talk’s Verizon network, but they don’t say how.
You can try to activate your iPhone 4 on Straight Talk and see if it works.
If you can’t activate your iPhone 4 with Straight Talk. You have two options. Sell the iPhone and buy and an iPhone 4 or other phone that uses the GSN network. Or, you can find another prepaid wireless company that uses the Verizon network that will activate your iPhone. Let me know if you would like help with that.
